Scrap prices are down for copper wire & aluminium big time.
Took a big hit on insulated copper wire today with the price dropping from $2.40 kg down to $1.50 kg!
Funnily enough, motors, transformers, brass & clean copper has held.
    Keep scrapping & Have fun!

Love the scrap yard runs. I like seeing the end results of your hard work. Some commodities are down while others are holding their own. But hey, it is what it is and you got some cash in the bank and that's good. Thanks for the information and entertainment. Be safe out there! Don't let it get your spirits down. 👍👍

I think scrappers are selling their entire copper wire stock all at once, thinking of a sudden closure of scrapyards. Knowing that copper wire is more common than motors, demand is decreasing at the same time that companies are losing more money because of reduced workers. Perhaps this is the explanation of prices having fallen so much.
    Great videos, cheers from Brazil!

Hi Ben, here in the UK today 16/04/2020 the price for light iron (the lowest) was down to £30/1000kg, down from £80 in december 2019. "household cable" (unstripped) was £850/1000kg, down from £1080 in dec. Dry bright wire, (stripped copper) was £2940/1000kg, down from £3800, Aluminium, clean was £150/1000kg, down from £300 last december andd £450 a year ago. Fridge motors were the only thing that stayed the same, £50/1000kg, So big drops here too! but you don't make any money if you stop scrapping!

    Dirty steel 8c was 14c
    Clean steel 12c was 17c
    Heavy steel 18c was 24c
Ally dom and cast 70c was 1.05
    Extruded $1.20 was $1.60
    Motors 50c was 65c
    Lead Battery 35c was 60c
Steely ally is the darkhorse here its stayed stable at 35c

Not bad motor price compared to here in the Midwest USA. I've been scraping as many copper motors as possible, because my scrap yard only pays 2 to 3 cents more per pound than steel! Last I check (last year) it was 9 cents a pound for motors! I thought it was way to low!! So I've been getting as much of the copper out then selling the steel from it at a price not much lower!!
    Have a GREAT Day!!!

Most of that cable there has very little copper inside. All the black stuff is from lap tops etc. Theres only 2 tiny 1.5mm cores. Would take about 6 months to strip all that even with a striping machine. Haha. The yard takes it as insulated so hes Ben's not caring much copper is in it as he knows he will get insulated price regardless of the size if the cords.

    • @nicolaschu9599

Computer wire and household cords are not worth stripping, it's only about 30% copper and 70% plastic. He strips the higher grades that have more copper.

You should consider making some sort of jig/harness so that the forklift can grab it easy to flip. A band or strap around the body of the bin with two pegs for the forks. The simpler the better. Attach a tagline to the back so that it can be flipped by you. Maybe keep the harness low so that it can be flipped with just a tug.

I know you are an ewaste person, I would do that also, but I do not know how to rate the boards
and what to save off the boards. I scrap alot of televisions, washers, dryers, freezers and fridges for the copper in the motors. I guess you could call me the copper freak. Its too bad you are not in the U.S. as I would be able to speak with you and find out how to sort computer boards and parts\

Hi Ben good video at least your insulated copper is doing better than here in USA West Virginia. The best price we can find is $0.40 pound it's just not worth selling right now. Steel is really bad also as sheet is only going $40 to $60 a ton in my area. In some bigger cities you can still find yards paying up to $100 but even that is dismal. So I am lucky in one way as I live in the country and have 5 acres of land. So I am just collecting what I can and stockpiling for when times get better. Hopefully one day I can get a good payday.

The cabinets are clean sheet iron,(remove all plastic and any copper or aluminum or you default to breakage) pound down the cabinets for room, mixed copper and pastic is :copper content: get a magnet, separate 304 stainless and alum. (MLCC)
knowning what you have and how to seperate is key to more money, a little extra time makes you a lot more money as well knowing the correct grading and the trade name, plastic is worthless, get a hammer and a sledge, and seperate house wire from communication wire, in Chicago we pay $80 net ton for clean sheet,

At some point you got to ask if it's all worth it. I hope you have your price points worked out because of all the processing and handling, loading, unloading of that steel and not even get $100. Maybe you should take a single average PC, break it all down, weigh and price the components and find an average value of each one cause it doesn't seem like it's worth the man power to pick one up, especially with the drop of prices.

If they put the wire in a big big like that I'm sure you must lose money because the weighing machine can't get those little numbers for your light wire, so maybe ask for a small bin so you don't lose out on money, just a theory though

yep i mentioned the scrap price drop on one of the previous videos some time ago. sounds about right...manhari 1.50.....Evelyn recycling $1.30. any yards in Bendigo no doubt even less (so i still dont bother with them even on a good day.) not sure what the story is with copper motors but what i can say is evelyn were paying 50c a kilo but its dropped to 30c a kilo. lead acid batteries were at 50c a kilo but dropped to 5c a kilo. steel was at 8c a kilo but that's dropped to 5c a kilo. i'm surprised Manhari are still paying at the 10c a kilo mark.

Unless you have lots of spare time they are not worth breaking apart. Printers are generally mostly all steel and plastic.
