Hard Rubbish Challenge First Pick

- First round of hard rubbish picking took 1.5 hours mostly due to being in the wrong area to where the main scrap was.
Turned out ok steel wise, lot's of small scrap bits and some e-waste.
next pick up will give us a better idea on what can be found in two quick trips.
Hard rubbish season goes through winter, so about 3 months of constant picking, enough scrap for all year if you have the room.
Keep scrapping & have fun!
Just retired from police work. I'm also somewhat disabled now. I started watching your videos a few months ago and the scrapping bug bit me. Even with this disability I think I can scrap on a small scale. Thanks Ben.
Awesome Gamers
Hi, I'm in the same position you are. I started in Sept 2017! I owned my own business for 25 years, I mostly retired about 3 or 4 years ago. Ben's videos has been a big inspiration for me! There is a couple of things that back fired a couple of days ago. Comment back and I'll let you know more of what to look out for. Especially since you sound like you and I have a lot in commend, with our disability!!!
Just random information here.
That plastic device with the key is an airlock, it's used to allow gases to escape during the fermentation process without allowing outside air from entering. You half will it with water and as the pressure inside the key builds up it will bubble through, but the outside air can't force it's way in.
I’m glad you’re a fan of us...your fans.
Thanks for sharing Ben
Great video Ben. Hard rubbish days have all but disappeared in the USA. The towns that still do it forbids us scraping. I'm jelly
wjp6480 I agree. Everything is in those trash bins with lids. I want to move to Australia just to scrap!
You're a legend! Back to your roots yeah, love your enthusiasm.
Great episode. I’m just sorry he left out that TV with all that juicy. copper . I love when Ben says about how much an item is worth. I didn’t know for ex. that a cooking pit was worth a dollar.
Another great video Ben, just remember if you are going after cast iron from the BBQ take the burners too, they are usually easily removable and cast as well.
Yeah I should dig a little deeper, i'm too focused on them grills
Awesome video I could watch that for hours id just set up a spare tv in workshop and watch it while scrapping my laptop pile, thumbs up pal
Thanks Ben, the 2nd trip was ok too, just scrapping stuff out now to see what value I end up with.
This is the video that started it all for me!
I watched in Sept. of 2017!!!
I do like your head mount that you use now though!!! :)
Man of steel. steel is the meal. love some good steel so versatile.
In the states I could resell a lot of that whole I saw in the first 25 minutes. The grills depending on quality I've sold for $100-200 easily in spring, summer, and early fall.

Ben, take care some very expensive stainless steel is magnetic, i.e. tools and rifle barrels, there are two types, austenitic stainless (sinks etc non mag), Ferritic and martensitic stainless, (tools etc).
Hey Ben, on the exhaust those are actually the mufflers(close to the rear of the car), the cat conv. is further on up towards the engine(for most vehicles, it may or may not be different depending on the model it is)....could also be different here in the US vs. Australia too I guess. Either way I enjoy watching your videos.
Good show ol'Chap!. Meat cleavers are generally high grade steel. I have 4 days till i can go and have some fun scrapping.
hay I hope u kno some printers like hp that take inkcarts with gon pin back you will find the cart holder also has a nice bit of gold on the plastic backing. and also on the inside on the boards
the keg was from a home beer brewer. the plastic thing on top was an air lock - when filled with water it would allow the CO2 from the fermentation to escape without allowing air back in to contaminate the brew. good find - might be stainless.

I see so much scrap metal laying around! I txt my scrap metal guy - he helped me out with other projects I've got going at home. Also, he gets whatever I pick-up while I'm at work, as I walk streets on my job. I throw it in a bucket for him, everything from car parts, to bolts/screws that will kill my or someone else's tires, to heavy steel things lying in the road, that I don't even know what they are from - just that they are steel. If its too much for me to deal with while I'm working, I txt him the address/location. He's working hard to make ends meet & raise a family; I appreciate him.

You sure leave a lot of good stuff behind.
Why do you drive right by big, interesting piles of junk without looking underneath? Like you say, "you never know."
WilmBeachHouse it's about time as well man.

Glad to see your going at it Ben!, I'm back into that stuff tomorrow haha. The reason why some streets haven't got much hard waste, is because some households just don't have much to throw out. Considering that areas like Moonee Valley, Moreland, Darebin and Brimbank have annual hard waste collection each year, many residents simply have nothing to put out for hard waste some years, because they've already thrown stuff out in the previous years hard waste
yeah true, today was better. I like the Moreland area, good for the more quirky & retro stuff. was going to do a little Brimbank tomorrow, it's probably the heaviest scrap area of the lot.
Aussie scrappers have it easy..scrap left out on lawn for you..Never seen it so easy..Talk about pavements full of Gold...
Do you strip smaller wire, or just sell it as coated wire? I've got some that is such a pain in the a$$ to strip -- it is bundles of fine wires, as in , think a lamp. It doesn't want to be skinned & holds me up!
Nope, never. all low & mid grade wire is sold as is, you don't get anymore value from stripping it.
I only strip thick copper wire, usually comes from industrial machinery, not general electronics
It's like raining scrap in there! In my town all i see on the road is a scrapped crt once a month... Its very hard...
Feed that wine to your chickens, make them happy happy
That small plane is a "block" plane, used for planing end grain on timber.
That blue microwave was positively...cute....
fun fact: there are different kinds of stainless steel, some magnetic, some not.
the wood that i see cost really more than your steel.
why do you didn't take that ?
you are making me jealous we've also got curbside and my ute off the road at the same time it sucks there's money to be made but I can't pick it up
look inside the exhaust and if u see what looks like a hunny comb its a cat
Ben you should scrap for the next year and get enough cash to by a bigger vehicle with tail lift then you could collect anything. Why not make that a challenge for the year?
You've turn me into a scrapper Ben
oh good, it's certainly addictive
Cant wait for hard rubbish in my area
I open up a vacuum cleaner the other day from curb side got it home started to scrap it out opened it out and there was a dead cat inside nearly spewed . The downside of scraping .
I don’t understand you take something valued at .30 Steele and left the tv with 10.00 of copper. You are correct your scrapping has changed.
I notice that you skip a lot of wine bottles. Do you have a deposit system on your glass and aluminum cans?
not in this state.
did you sell the knobs of the cook top?
... from the road EVERYTHING looks like copper pipe! lol
We get a penalty for wheels w tires on here in Florida
Very cool video Mr Ben ...! Thank you
does a 2,000degree farenheit forge damage concrete over time?
it's the temp' inside, not outside, you can pick it up at full temp', it's all insulated
Wow I cant believe you didnt take the table with the folding legs I can sell those for 15 bucks all day long
So I was driving to lunch and saw a big rotating heater fan thing. Wouldn't you know it, by the time I got back the trash guys were there picking it up. Not to be undone, there was a satellite dish at the next house that I picked up before the rubbish guys got there.
Gonna watch when i got home from work fam
I'm German, I only have Miele products. The hob costs €1299 new

40.38 was that a steel toilet lol
on the BBQs what about the burners? @10:16
didn't think of 'em
You could of got $30 for that folding table you past by there $45-60 here in USA
Yeah true, I didn't think much of it at the time but I should of grabbed that, or at least flipped it to see the top.
go right lolzz
Nice video, SHARP is a japonese brand.
Japanese is the correct spelling.
That Cobra bike is 100usd haha
go on that good you teach us do not forge3t 444
Why did you skip over so many items? Thats 500+lbs you could have had.
Only thing that annoys me is when you destroy things that others could have used. When I used to look through hard rubbish collection it was frustrating to see cool things that I could have used or easily repaired but destroyed for a few cents of scrap value (power cords cut off working items, grill taken from a good BBQ ;) ). Yeah I know, first come etc... :p the things people throw out :)
over the next 2 months there will be many hundreds of bbq's left out, remember there is only 24 hours until everything goes to landfill, so isn't it better to take some value then to let it rot in the dump?
Yeah I know :) Just a shame that people throw things out I guess
Anyone else find garbage picking in a Mercedes a bit odd?
(only for humor)
I do it in a Porsche. Who cares what they think. Their trash paid for my car lol
Yep.. it’s an old one tho
get a chest mount for your cam so you can work twice as fast. its painful to watch you only using one hand
Hi David. Ben has a head mounted camera. So he can use both hands when he needs to.
yeah I have both, I used the chest harness, I mostly hold it to line up the shot otherwise it would be pointing in all directions.
the head strap is a little to full on walking the streets, i'd look like a google car
Is that a cat at 34:04
lol, I was looking for a cat to run through, i'm not sure it is a cat, i'll take a closer look.
liked the video but i dont whant to comment
