I was on a cruise where the SAME couple was late on two consecutive port calls. Each time, the captain held the ship a half hour for them. The THIRD time they were late, the ship departed on the dot, leaving them in Cancun. Everyone on the ship cheered, since by then we were so sick of hearing their names over and over on the loudspeaker. Hope they enjoyed their flight home.
Indeed! I've never witnessed a ship leave people behind or actually sail away on time, to be honest. Like my mom used to say, if you’re always early you can never be late. You may think you’re coming back too early but the worse thing that can happen by being too early is that you have to wait. The worse thing that can happen if you’re late is that they won’t wait.
When we were in Greece on a Princess cruise, my husband and I went on a Princess excursion to Corinth. Our tour was over an hour late, but because it was a Princess excursion, the ship waited patiently for us. (Never saw so many crew members there to meet our tour bus and “help” us to the ship. Everything was packed up, and the ship left just minutes after we were on board. ). I always book the sponsored excursions. Not willing to take the risk.
Will never book a ship excursion. Don’t want to be on a bus with 30 of my new best friends following a person with flag. Not my idea of fun. It just takes good planning. Be back early.
It depends on the location. When the ports have attractions that are super easy to get to using local transport, I usually go for a private tour. Like last year on our UK and Ireland cruise, we hired a cab driver for the day and he took us over to the medieval town of Chester, which was awesome! But when we’re in places with sketchy roads and the sights are a bit further inland, like in Mexico and the Caribbean, we just book the excursions through the ship. It’s way easier that way!

Since you're doing a European cruise I highly recommend checking where the cruise port is relative to the city, to give you an idea of whether an excursion is merited (Rome), or if you can simply walk off the ship and explore.

I wear a wrist watch to keep the time, not a digital watch, a watch with hands and sync it with the ship's time. I verify what time to be aboard and then plan to be back at least 2 hours prior to the onboard time. No excuse for being late back to the ship. I also do excursions through the cruiseline so that I know they will be back on time or the ship will wait. I'm not going a long ways away from the ship.
Always better to be early than late. People just don't seem to get it that the ship will leave without them. I am with you I would rather be back an hour or more before I have to than to be late. If i had to be left behind i think in the Mexican Riviera might be one of the easier to get back to homeport from due to air connectivity to LA (and probably the other ports). We always travel with passports and they are in the safe when we are ashore as that allows the ship officers to provide it in the 'Manilla Envelope' to the Port Agent. I also take a photo (or screen shot) of the daily agenda that has the Port Agent's contact info so if i were ever running late I could call. In these cases of only being minutes or seconds late that call may be enough for the ship to hold fast. Once the lines are dropped there is a huge cost to tie back up for one or two people.
When we go on Excursions we get back early enough to take a shower eat then wait for the peir runners with drinks in our hands , tho some times we will get on the ship a hour left if we are in a port with the ship right in front of us

On my cruises it shocked me how many people believe the world stops for them. Then when confronted they are so entitled they verbally attack anyone thinking they are not the King and Queen.
I worked on a ship for 3 years was fun but awful at the same time..anyways the cruise ship companies hire other companies in all their ports to care for people left behind. They transport them to either another boat to meet the ship on the next island, or a hotel or the airport. Then the company makes sure the cuise ship cares for their belongings and has them either shipped to a port or sent back home...who pays for this..? Guess. :) aha.
I’ve not seen anyone left behind (cause I’m usually in the shower around departure time) but I was almost one of those people who came back too late. I was in my early twenties and enjoyed a full day at the beach with the intention of taking the last public bus back to port that would get back in time.. except I didn’t understand island time… the bus came about 30 minutes later than expected and that was too late. Like most people posted, be back on the ship an hour before "on board time". ALWAYS check ship time when you leave the ship, there is a clock just before you leave the ship. Your cell phone might be set on a different time, and that can screw you up big time. One more big tip is try and do all your excursions first, and come back to the ship and grab something to eat...and if you have time go back out and explore things close to the dock...this way you don't have to worry about traffic issues (like the bus breaks down, or stuck in traffic). Dibs on their stuff!
This is a good video and reminder not to be late. At least learned from their mistakes.
Last year the Carnival Glory waited an hour for some folks since they had left their kids on the ship.
Those parents should be investigated by child services. Leaving children on a ship unattended, no matter how old is dangerous.
We don't know that they were unattended.
@@Ivehadenuff The story I heard was that other adult relatives were on the ship watching the children but the ship still would not leave without the parents.
The ship did leave the uncle was with the children people who are late know exactly what theyare doing
Guess you shouldn't have missed the "all aboard time!"
I had a panic attack about this and made damn sure to get back early.
Why would you want to spend days at sea with people like you just saw board the ship? Next to spending your vacation at Walmart, I can't think of a worse way to spend your leisure time.
Respect others people time,, it's not about you...
We almost left 2 people behind in PV last year.....The lady even had the audacity to stop at the booths to try and shop
Its also happened in November cruise Navigator of the sea at puerto Vallarta
My cruise ship did this.
Gangplanks up, no one else allowed Onboard.
Then sat for Eight Hours refusing to allow anyone who was late to come Onboard.
Why did you wait for 8 hours
what if they left their passports on board? how do they get back to the US or Canada without it?
Good question!
Emergency passport at us embassy
That’s usually what’s in the Manila envelope. Do some research of the policy on each cruise line
Pier running has become a huge spectator sport,....almost as huge as NASCAR. Pretty much always 1-2 people running at every port here in the Americas (except maybe Alaska). I even have a small checkered flag I wave to encourage them to move their behinds. This year I saw 3 people get left behind, and they always act like its the ship's fault,...they feel they got back EARLY.
Even if they had to wait for a shuttle, they were late to that area. Nothing in port is worth cutting getting to the ship that close.
