Amazing video, John! Your description of Beast In Heat really made me laugh. The Burning is one of my favourites. Cannibal Ferox is great. I’m same as you - I watch the animal cruelty free version of Cannibal Holocaust nowadays. Flesh For Frankenstein is wonderful. I can’t get into Island Of Death. Madhouse was boring. Zombie is amazing. I know what you mean about a lot of these movies being terrible but for some reason, they are enjoyable. Can’t wait to check out part 2.

Driller Killer is one I want to check out soon, surprised to hear that it's not as gruesome as I thought it would be. The problem with giallo films is that they never give any clues as to who the killer is. It always turns out to be some minor character and fails to explain why the killer was killing.
The list was created to give video shops and the police a guide because films like The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (the Dolly Parton musical) were pulled because they thought they were obscene. One of the funniest cases was with The Devil and Max Devlin (the Disney comedy which is now problematic for a different reason), anti-censorship campaigner Liam T. Sanford wrote a letter to the police over its video release to prove just how daft there criteria was, and they actually pulled it. However its ban was short lived because the BBFC had passed the film uncut for cinemas with an A certificate in 1981 and PG for video in 1987. The pre cert (and to date only UK) VHS release of The Beast in Heat trades hands for thousands of pounds because only like 200 or so copies were made to begin with (JVI went bust before the video nasties scare), god knows how many copies were destroyed so even less copies exist and bootleg copies began to circulate in the 90s, so there are more bootlegs in existence then official releases. It was never submitted to the BBFC for theatrical release and to this day it has never been resubmitted to the BBFC. The Burning was originally cut when it came out in cinemas back in 1981; however when it came out on video Thorn EMI "accidently" released the uncut version. Because they were a major establishment in the UK at the time (not just a fly by night) they were let off lightly. As soon as it was added to the DPP list they took the copies already floating around and taped them over with the cut version (well I guess it was cheaper than buying new cassettes). The way you can tell if you have an uncut copy is if it has a white tape label without a date stamped on it, the recalled and cut copies had a date rubber stamped on the label and later pressings had a blue label. The post cert VHS put out by Vipco was also cut (although uncut copies were sold in Denmark), it was later passed uncut in 2002.

Great piece, really look forward to the next ones. Early 80s was an amazing time for films of this nature. You'll follow this perfectly as you too lived through it but a little context for your younger commenters.......... Up until the very early 80s we had 3 channels in the UK (BBC1,2 and ITV). TV started at about 9.00 am and stopped broadcasting at 11 or 12 midnight, so maybe 40 hours of tv per day. This had to cover sports events, education, news, childrens shows, comedies, documantaries, films, light entertainment etc. The choice was pitiful, you couldnt pause or record a show, If you wanted to watch the Saturday night James Bond film you had to be there at the time it started or you'd miss it. It was a far cry from the zillions of channels, catch up tv and netflixes we have today. Then came VCR. It changed the game completely. This gave us the choice to record shows whilst were we out, watch one channel and record another and most appealing and revolutionary of all, rent a movie that would never be shown on British TV. I mean, Cannibal Holocaust barely got a UK cinema release and BBC were never going to broadcast it. Initially the larger film companies did not like the idea of releasing their premiere titles on video despite the public being ravenous for videos to rent. This left a gaping hole in the market which small distribution companies took advantage of and they scoured the world for movies which they could pay a pittance for the rights to. We the public gobbled these titles up. Competition was huge so the way to get your film on the shelves was to make the cover as sensational as possible. Films built up reputations and friends swapped stories of what was the goriest or scariest movies. It was a badge of honour to have watched these films. We had always been fed 'safe' movies by the british broadcasters, We had never had access to these types of movies before, it really was a very revolutionary and exciting time. The best thing was that whilst cinema releases were subject to censorship no laws had been put in place for videos and due to the speed that video rental blew up the shelves were full of uncut horrors. it took the government a few years to catch up before the 1984 vra act came in at which point you could be fined or even sent to Prison for owning films like Tenebrae or Fight for your Life. Its probably hard for those who didnt live though it to understand just how drastically the landscape of our viewing choices changed over the course of a few years. And then how it changed again just as quickly with the banning and censoring of movies. It was an incredibly exciting time to be a horror fan.

I used to really love the film, but now, it’s not as good as I remembered. This was a great video John. A lot of these titles I haven't seen and some if them are utter trash. The Video Nasties documentary are great and it sounds to be such an odd time to be a horror fan back then, of course it was before mh time, I couldn't imagine going to prison for simply owning a copy of Cannibal Holocaust, it's sound ridiculous and laughable by today's standards. I look forward to more videos on this subject John, it's always fascinated me.

I remember this list well. I reviewed all of the movies for a written blog I used to do. There are some real doozies in there but some decent flicks in there. Like you said Cannibal Ferox and Cannibal Holocaust are 2 I would never watch again because of the animal scenes. It’s a shame as Cannibal Holocaust is a decent movie. I’m glad there’s an animal free version. As you’re going down the titles, I can remember reviewing the movies but remember so little of what was in the movie, lol. I got really bored of the Ilsa movies.

Hi John, I have been really enjoying making my way through all of your videos, and am in awe of your wonderful collection of films. You have put a hell of a lot of time and money into making it what it is. Someday I hope to match the size and depth of your film collection, although I fear space and my wife will be against me! 😂I have most of the dpp section 1 listed films, save a few. Most of the more obscure ones I own are dvd import copies. I have dvd copies of mardi gra massacre, the ghastly ones, fight for your life, and snuff. I just recently picked up an uncut dvd version of night of the demon ( although it appears 88 films have a full uncut blu ray version coming out in the uk in the next couple of weeks 👍🏻) I look forward to seeing your journey towards obtaining all films on the list and look forward to your future videos. The monster dude was weird. A Bay Of Blood is awesome, The Burning is awesome. The Last House On The Left is a hard watch. I really like the remake. They will both feature on my channel at some point. I thought Toolbox Murders was in the 39 list and Prowler, The Beyond and The Bogey Man. But I will wait to see your next episode 😁

Hi john Happy New year. Superb video. The cannibal films I do watch, l hate the animal cruelty in them though. I remember growing up back in the 80's thinking l'll never see any of these films again uncut😂. Manchester police force had James Anderton( God's messenger) running around pulling tapes off video store shelves! Some really good titles and some really terrible 😂 on the list. Does the Flesh For Frankenstein Blu-ray (or 4K) include the (anaglyph)3D version? I have 2 DVD versions of it [Warped Vision (NL) & Marketing Film (D)], both of them include the Morrissey/Kier audio-commentary track but sadly no extra 3D version.

Hey John. Great video you made !. And happy new year ;). In my personal opinion, the video nasty list is a very hypocritical list to be honest. There are much more nasty films out there today (Salo ;) then anything the italians/europeans did back in the day. I won't deffend the animal cruelty at all but a lot of times they didn't have a choice, because they producers demanded it to be in there. Like i said in my movie review about Cannibal Holocaust, the producers were aiming for the german and chinese markets. And they would always have animal killings in their films under the pretense that the movies would sell better. Which is completely ridiculous ofcourse. But i think Ruggero Deodato choose the lesser of 2 evils when he picked animals that were already gonna be killed and eaten anyway. Even though it's very rough and graphic, i really love I Spit On Your Grave because of the social commentary and because of the message the movie tries to give you, kind of the same with Last House On The Left. I love how you danced around what gets munched on in Anthropophagous 😂😜 (No Spoilers) Bay of Blood is sensational (as most Bava is 👍) it’s alternate title of “Twitch of the Death Nerve” is so Good 😊 Blood Feast is a hoot. I’ve not seen Beast in Heat as it veers off into questionable territory shall we say. I’d liken it to Bloodsucking Freaks in its wow, how did they make that.. some of the actresses at least in Bloodsucking Freaks came from the New York Porno scene and it ummm really shows too.. its porno level acting but it has a certain grimy charm. If the Nasties era continued Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede would be instantly banned. 🤯🤔 times have indeed changed. This is a fascinating topic for those of us who can remember 😂🤦♂️
I'm more interested in the lesser known video nasties if you know what I mean like Forest of Fear,Axe,Mardi Gras Massacre,Don't Go in the Woods etc its curious why some of them were on the DPP list they really aren't that offensive especially nowadays.

I think both copies are fully uncut, but the blue underground has extra dialogue? Or I'm thinking of Zombi 2. It's been a while since I've watched them.

I'm surprised 1980s Eaten Alive movie isn't part of the Section 1 list. To me it's the worst Italian cannibal genre movie for violence and the animal scenes.
Funnily enough I'm just watching the Section 3 titles and the second dvd and Eaten Alive has just come up on there! I totally agree that's its right up there with the worst nasties!! I can only assume it was heavily cut on original video, bit given the cover you would have thought it a section 1 title for sure!! 😱😱👍👍👍
Devil Hunter is so funny and so very watchable. Don't Go In The Woods was really boring. I tried to like it because I like bad films. Island of Death, Cannibal Apocalypse, SS Expirement Camp and Anthropophagus were boring as hell. The first time I watched Cannibal Holocaust was the cut Vipco version. Even though it was cut, it damaged me as did I Spit On Your Grave.

The problem with giallo films is that they never give any clues as to who the killer is. It always turns out to be some minor character and fails to explain why the killer was killing.
Yeah they certainly can do that at times 😵💫🤣🤣 some have got the most amazing twists but some can leave you flat unfortunately 🥴🥴🤩👍
The list was created to give video shops and the police a guide because films like The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (the Dolly Parton musical) were pulled because they thought they were obscene. One of the funniest cases was with The Devil and Max Devlin (the Disney comedy which is now problematic for a different reason), anti-censorship campaigner Liam T. Sanford wrote a letter to the police over its video release to prove just how daft there criteria was, and they actually pulled it. However its ban was short lived because the BBFC had passed the film uncut for cinemas with an A certificate in 1981 and PG for video in 1987.
The pre cert (and to date only UK) VHS release of The Beast in Heat trades hands for thousands of pounds because only like 200 or so copies were made to begin with (JVI went bust before the video nasties scare), god knows how many copies were destroyed so even less copies exist and bootleg copies began to circulate in the 90s, so there are more bootlegs in existence then official releases. It was never submitted to the BBFC for theatrical release and to this day it has never been resubmitted to the BBFC.
The Burning was originally cut when it came out in cinemas back in 1981; however when it came out on video Thorn EMI "accidently" released the uncut version. Because they were a major establishment in the UK at the time (not just a fly by night) they were let off lightly. As soon as it was added to the DPP list they took the copies already floating around and taped them over with the cut version (well I guess it was cheaper than buying new cassettes). The way you can tell if you have an uncut copy is if it has a white tape label without a date stamped on it, the recalled and cut copies had a date rubber stamped on the label and later pressings had a blue label. The post cert VHS put out by Vipco was also cut (although uncut copies were sold in Denmark), it was later passed uncut in 2002.

Great piece, really look forward to the next ones. Early 80s was an amazing time for films of this nature. You'll follow this perfectly as you too lived through it but a little context for your younger commenters..........
Up until the very early 80s we had 3 channels in the UK (BBC1,2 and ITV). TV started at about 9.00 am and stopped broadcasting at 11 or 12 midnight, so maybe 40 hours of tv per day. This had to cover sports events, education, news, childrens shows, comedies, documantaries, films, light entertainment etc. The choice was pitiful, you couldnt pause or record a show, If you wanted to watch the Saturday night James Bond film you had to be there at the time it started or you'd miss it. It was a far cry from the zillions of channels, catch up tv and netflixes we have today.
Then came VCR. It changed the game completely.
This gave us the choice to record shows whilst were we out, watch one channel and record another and most appealing and revolutionary of all, rent a movie that would never be shown on British TV. I mean, Cannibal Holocaust barely got a UK cinema release and BBC were never going to broadcast it. Initially the larger film companies did not like the idea of releasing their premiere titles on video despite the public being ravenous for videos to rent. This left a gaping hole in the market which small distribution companies took advantage of and they scoured the world for movies which they could pay a pittance for the rights to. We the public gobbled these titles up. Competition was huge so the way to get your film on the shelves was to make the cover as sensational as possible. Films built up reputations and friends swapped stories of what was the goriest or scariest movies. It was a badge of honour to have watched these films. We had always been fed 'safe' movies by the british broadcasters, We had never had access to these types of movies before, it really was a very revolutionary and exciting time. The best thing was that whilst cinema releases were subject to censorship no laws had been put in place for videos and due to the speed that video rental blew up the shelves were full of uncut horrors. it took the government a few years to catch up before the 1984 vra act came in at which point you could be fined or even sent to Prison for owning films like Tenebrae or Fight for your Life.
Its probably hard for those who didnt live though it to understand just how drastically the landscape of our viewing choices changed over the course of a few years. And then how it changed again just as quickly with the banning and censoring of movies. It was an incredibly exciting time to be a horror fan.
Vol 1 of video nasties dvd set is oop now and can be quite pricey. Loved this video!

This was a great video John. A lot of these titles I haven't seen and some if them are utter trash. The Video Nasties documentary are great and it sounds to be such an odd time to be a horror fan back then, of course it was before mh time, I couldn't imagine going to prison for simply owning a copy of Cannibal Holocaust, it's sound ridiculous and laughable by today's standards.

I remember this list well. I reviewed all of the movies for a written blog I used to do. There are some real doozies in there but some decent flicks in there.
Like you said Cannibal Ferox and Cannibal Holocaust are 2 I would never watch again because of the animal scenes. It’s a shame as Cannibal Holocaust is a decent movie. I’m glad there’s an animal free version.

Hi John, I have been really enjoying making my way through all of your videos, and am in awe of your wonderful collection of films. You have put a hell of a lot of time and money into making it what it is. Someday I hope to match the size and depth of your film collection, although I fear space and my wife will be against me! 😂I have most of the dpp section 1 listed films, save a few. Most of the more obscure ones I own are dvd import copies. I have dvd copies of mardi gra massacre, the ghastly ones, fight for your life, and snuff. I just recently picked up an uncut dvd version of night of the demon ( although it appears 88 films have a full uncut blu ray version coming out in the uk in the next couple of weeks 👍🏻) I look forward to seeing your journey towards obtaining all films on the list and look forward to your future videos. Does the Flesh For Frankenstein Blu-ray (or 4K) include the (anaglyph)3D version?
I have 2 DVD versions of it [Warped Vision (NL) & Marketing Film (D)], both of them include the Morrissey/Kier audio-commentary track but sadly no extra 3D version.

In my personal opinion, the video nasty list is a very hypocritical list to be honest.
There are much more nasty films out there today (Salo ;) then anything the italians/europeans did back in the day.
I won't deffend the animal cruelty at all but a lot of times they didn't have a choice,
because they producers demanded it to be in there.
Like i said in my movie review about Cannibal Holocaust, the producers were aiming for the german and chinese markets.
And they would always have animal killings in their films under the pretense that the movies would sell better.
Which is completely ridiculous ofcourse.
But i think Ruggero Deodato choose the lesser of 2 evils when he picked animals that were already gonna be killed and eaten anyway.
Even though it's very rough and graphic, i really love I Spit On Your Grave because of the social commentary and
because of the message the movie tries to give you, kind of the same with Last House On The Left.

I love how you danced around what gets munched on in Anthropophagous 😂😜 (No Spoilers) Bay of Blood is sensational (as most Bava is 👍) it’s alternate title of “Twitch of the Death Nerve” is so Good 😊 Blood Feast is a hoot. I’ve not seen Beast in Heat as it veers off into questionable territory shall we say. I’d liken it to Bloodsucking Freaks in its wow, how did they make that.. some of the actresses at least in Bloodsucking Freaks came from the New York Porno scene and it ummm really shows too.. its porno level acting but it has a certain grimy charm. If the Nasties era continued Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede would be instantly banned. 🤯🤔 times have indeed changed. This is a fascinating topic for those of us who can remember 😂🤦♂️

I'm surprised 1980s Eaten Alive movie isn't part of the Section 1 list. To me it's the worst Italian cannibal genre movie for violence and the animal scenes.
Funnily enough I'm just watching the Section 3 titles and the second dvd and Eaten Alive has just come up on there! I totally agree that's its right up there with the worst nasties!! I can only assume it was heavily cut on original video, bit given the cover you would have thought it a section 1 title for sure!! 😱😱👍👍👍

Don't Go In The Woods was really boring. I tried to like it because I like bad films.
Island of Death, Cannibal Apocalypse, SS Expirement Camp and Anthropophagus were boring as hell.
The first time I watched Cannibal Holocaust was the cut Vipco version. Even though it was cut, it damaged me as did I Spit On Your Grave.
