The take on Cobra Commander is what I've always wanted to see. A cold calculating tactical genius, an expert at psychological warfare, and a sociopathic inventor. He doesn't run from a confrontation, even when seemingly overpowered. He takes his time to understand his adversary and formulate a plan. I'm not a fan of Cobra-La and was worried when it was depicted in the first issue, but the way it was done worked so well. And I love how they've integrated Transformers into the overall origin of these factions forming. They've done a good job balancing the outlandish sci-fi elements within the context of the real world.
I liked a lot of the humor of Cobra Commander of the toon and Hama comic. But I hated that both treated him often as the do something overly stupid so the Joes could win trick.
GI Joe and the Transformers shared universe is working right now! I love it. M.A.R.S. cut Starscream in half and put his torso on top of a HISS Tank, it's nuts!
I love the EU! It's been fantastic so far. Being more of a fan of transformers, I picked up the EU free Comic book Day issue last year. It had a few mini stories, and I was really hooked by the Duke section because the idea of a military officer being driven kinda mad by seeing a Transformer was intriguing. I then picked up the Duke series, and was blown away. Fast forward to today, I'm reading all of the EU, and got into this channel because of your really fun takes on GI Joe!
There’s simply too many characters to satisfy the masses with a movie runtime. I’d say a series would make more sense but yeah they could totally start with a few mains to get the full spread of the story happening then sprinkle in new faces as they go! Great video as always Destro!❤
Thank you for the comic recommendations. I like the idea that each series has a different tone. I wish that Star Trek would do something similar and give us a horror themed Star Trek mini-series. I also think that it is awesome that more women are writing comics these days; because it gives us more variety: Amanda Conner wrote Harley Quinn, Marjorie Liu wrote X-23, and Sarah J. Maas even wrote a Catwoman novel.
Waiting for the trades is killing me, its amazing. Also i highly recommend transformers and void rivals. I didnt have much interest but they are brilliant and tie in to gi joe perfectly
I've only kept up on Duke (didn't care for it), Cobra Commander (loved it), Scarlett ( hated it). Bottom would be Scarlett. I hate how she was able to blow through those ninjas. Sure she knew martial arts, but for ninjas, that is their life.
First off your channel is great. My brother pointed me in it's direction a year ago, and I've enjoyed it ever since. This video came out at the perfect time, just got the trades for Christmas. OK, now my rankings. 4. Duke: Did not care for this, should have been titled "What if Captain America was a Dipshit?" Did like Clutch though. 3. Cobra Commander: OK, does write a Commander you can take seriously. They need to work on the Dreadnoughts though. They go grom hardcore, violent thugs to goofy in a heartbeat. And how did Commander know Buzzer's past so specifically? Destro: Pretty solid. A bit overstuffed at times, and a lot of factions, but Destro himself is written well.Should be an ongoing series, juxtaposing current and past Destro Clan tales. 1. Scarlett. Not being contrary, just thought it was a well-written fast paced super-spy tale. Solid art, good action and decent, "Well I painted myself in a corner." ending. As an aside, I didn't think they were necessarily gay. Anyway, sorry for the long winded post and keep the rad content flowing!
They’re alright. I don’t care for the cartoon take they’ve taken on Cobra Commander, but they’re all okay. I also don’t care for Transformers in the same universe or at least being known in the same universe. The Hama series was rooted in reality, and I think that’s way better.
I rank it: Cobra Commander, Duke, Scarlett, Destro. Which is too bad for me because Destro is my favorite character out of those 4. Agree there is only Great to Amazing though so they are all awesome.
I hc Destro as bi, but in majority I think Destro doesn’t believe in limits (sleeps with whoever he wants, but truly loves Baroness. I mean they’re BDSM couple. Healthy BDSM couple).
Didn’t Zartan and the Dreadnocks support CC in the Cobra Civil War? I think it actually was Zartan who killed Serpentor. Seems strange to see them at odds.
Duke was just jarring. I wasn't expecting a Duke I wasnt familiar with. Plus, like you said, it's more transformers than Joe's Duke could have been the main soldier from the first transformers movie.
Love your channel. I'm still not sold on this Energon universe though. Like you I'm a purist, don't transformer my Joes please. Plus the artwork seems a little lackluster, not as detailed or colorful as the original Marvel comics. Maybe if they did a mini series on Beach Head or Leatherneck (two of my fave Joes) I'd give it a shot.
Thanks! Yeah, I was surprised at how much I liked it because of the Transformers/Cobra La stuff. They are doing a Beachhead one-off issue that will be completely silent
Loved Duke and Cobra Commander. Destro was solid. Honestly hated Scarlet though, she had an absurd amount of plot armor and I thought the story was pretty meh.
I'm not a fan of any of the EU books. I tried, but they're really short and overly focused on inconsequential violence. For example, I doubt anyone will remember the dictator Destro overthrew in issue #1. They didn't even give him a name. That's bad writing. Borovia had two revolutions in ARAH and their leaders had names and would pop up from time to time because they were characters, not props.
The Energon Universe comics have all been fantastic so far with the single exception of the Scarlett mini-series. Characterisation/dialogue is problematic in that one and sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everything else, including Void Rivals and Transformers. Let's not be diplomatic, Skybound should avoid damaging trends like feeling obliged to put women 'writers' on books with female leads.
I've found them disappointing overall. The pacing feels rushed, but also never seems to go anywhere. They also feel badly edited. I have to go back and reread what just happened because it doesn't make sense. It's like panels are missing. I bought the individual stories comic, and the GiJoe #1. And that's it for me. I didn't really care to continue it.
Destro is number 1 and Cobra Command is number 2 in my opinion for me. I had this conversion with the owner of the local comic book store recently and I told him I did not like the Joes book (as he put the Joe books in pull list since I liked the Cobra books so much). Hopefully the one shot books will be better for the Joes.
You are doing g yourself a disservice not reading the transformer book. Also if you tolerated the cobra La stuff in the CC book you really need to read that one. I’m not a fan of void rivals. They one is the weakest for me.
Honestly I've never read a GI Joe comic beyond issue #155 from 1994. But I'm thinking of picking these up. I trust your judgement. And you had positive things to say about Duke 😮 That's praise, in itself 😆😉👍
Thanks. There are websites where you can read everything. While the new ones are worth buying, I'll admit I have been using sketchy websites to read Devil's Due and IDW.
@@GeoffNelson I did not catch that. Maybe I ignored it --not because I'm offended--more because I am invested in the Scarlett/Snake Eyes love story too much to accept any other
@@DestroIsMySpiritAnimal yeah it's not a matter of offense, it's using beloved properties in a pursuit of activism that has no natural place here. It's putting an agenda ahead of the sincere desire to entertain.
I love that Duke is focused on. As a kid, the lack of having him in the old comic disappointed me. I still like the old comic but I preferred the cartoon

Yeah, they really nailed Cobra Commander's character
If they turn these comics into the crossover movies, it will be a massive hit.
Agreed. It would be awesome. but they wont
@@DestroIsMySpiritAnimalYeah, the series are just too good for Hollywood to do correctly.
I’ve become hooked on this channel, I can really see it going places!
Me too, one of my favourites
Thanks!
GI Joe and the Transformers shared universe is working right now! I love it. M.A.R.S. cut Starscream in half and put his torso on top of a HISS Tank, it's nuts!
They're not playing
Really not a fan of mixing Joes with Transformers but I have to admit a severed Starscream on top of a HISS sounds pretty boss.
@@jonnyt16 he's not too happy about it. They stuck bombs inside him to make him comply to be their battle slave lol

Thanks! A series would be incredible
I always thought Tears Of The Sun and Blackhawk Down (Tomahawk Down?) would have made for excellent G.I. Joe movies.
Great video man. Transformers Energon was the highest selling comic of 2023
Oh wow. I did not know that

That guy dies pretty quick. And then it gets into Tomax and Xamot as the main villains.

No disrespect to the real artists... but with AI animation getting really good and affordable, have you thought of doing some GI Joe "episodes"?
