BMW E90 3 Series Sport Steering Wheel Upgrade

- In this video I show you how to retrofit paddle shifters on an E90 steering wheel. I specifically retrofit LCI paddles from a 2011 335i to an X1 steering wheel with the updated steering wheel trim and bolsters at the ten and two position.
I did this to get an up to date look and also to have paddle shifters on a steering wheel with bolsters at the 10 and 2 position. BMW never offered it this way unless you purchased an M Sport steering wheel for hundreds of dollars.
This DIY involves modifying LCI paddles to work on a pre-lci car and modifying a non paddle shift steering wheel to accept the LCI paddles.
I'm happy with the look and feel of the steering wheel and how you enjoy this DIY.
I did this for approximately $200.

Man, thanks 1000 times for this video! It more really helped me (sparing me from big pain I guess) installing LCI shift paddles on my E92 steering wheel. Just upgraded a heated sport steering wheel to update the standard sport steering wheel on my 07' 330xi Coupe! Since my paddles came off of a F30 I don't have these fancy bezels. I also only drilled the holes for the screws to have them right in place and made a tiny hole to fit the calbe through the back of the wheel, which seems to be actually enough. Thanks bro and keep up these AMAZING videos!
Another great video man. Please keep up the great work!
Never knew it was possible to upgrade the paddle + and - to work like the newer models. So much better than the old shift system you had. Great job and great video!
We used to swap the wiring over on the connector in the E39 / E46 for when you pushed forward or backwards for manual shifting back in the day.
You deserve more views and recognition.
I realize it is kinda off topic but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Marley Parker Flixportal
@Payton Alexzander thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I appreciate it !!
@Marley Parker No problem :)
Good job.
I also placed black foam material between mounting slot on the steering wheel and the paddle body. When assembling, the foam material was crushed by squeezing, but it closed those small gaps.
33:45 thank you so much you helped me a lot mine works perfectly now they upshift and downshift fine. Thank you appreciate it man keep up the good work
Vehicular thank you! Used this to install on my 2010 e90 non paddle. Everything works perfect and can shift in D or DS. Had to run the 2 wires to the shifter but that was the easy part.
hi i just did the retrofit where it only works in DS mode i also pull the 2 cables from the box under the steering wheel. HELP ME
You are the man! This video is awesome.
Thanks a lot for your useful video, really appreciated
Awesome video.. I have a 2011 LCI M Sport 328i. I’m going to hunt down an X1 wheel and do this project.
For those trying to do the resistor mod on your Lci paddles skip to 33:45. Thanks man. You always do great work
Lol what a coincidence Mr Martinez
Nice Work !!
It's great to see someone try new things. Also first :)
You are a bad ass! What an awesome video!
great video. thank you for not including any annoying music.
Thank you very much !!! Very helpful
Great video
Cool video!!
I've got a 2006 E92 335i with manual gearbox. I have just bought a mint X1 LCI steering wheel (2014) and it's a straight swap as there are no paddles to mess about with. Looks a lot better too.
Thank You for this video I'll be doing this asap. Much better wheel, the e90 sport package should have come with grips at 10/2.
Thanks to you i had done my first ever retrofi from no paddle shifters to whole steering wheel with LCI paddle shifter, thanks man
if you're on a budget you can also repin the pre lci paddle shifters to work like normal, its 3 pins and you just swap the two on the ends (for the left side) or completely remove one after swapping the other
I have an '07 335i and it's got paddle shifters and bolsters. It's probably a combination of some/all of the options S710, S249 and S337
For anybody interested, you can also just use an m sport wheel out of an e82 e90 e92 and probably many other models. In addition to the bolsters + paddles combo m-sport wheels are thicker and have nicer leather.
Hay man great video !!...i have a question, where did you bought that steering wheel trim cover?, i mean the new one looks!! Tnks...
Hey, start watching your videos after E70 wheel bearing replacement, nice, in depth explanation and EVEN similar ideas!!)))
THANK YOU for your time of putting it together your videos, you never mention if any of those steering wheels were heated or not, for us in Canada its an important thing...
Now my idea is to get shift levers (Sport or an M-Sport style) and retrofit them to an E70 steering wheel!!? Yours is same as mine, PRE Lci E70 and since you already know how to take airbag out do you mind popping it out on E70 and have a look in there for #1 pre wiring for shift paddles and #2 place or spots to add paddles!?
Thanks, TTBB
PS: Looked through your videos and you already upgraded to a Sport steering wheel on your E70, I have another qeustion, do you think E90 and E70 have identical splines on steering wheel shaft? (Part that connects to steering wheel) Maybe i can just retrofit E90 steering wheel with paddles already?)
would be cool to scan the template a remake it in cad, for people that only want to add the paddles without buying another wheel, great vid!
Sweet! just picked up a e90 wheel with the thumb rests, hopefully the brackets are in inside!
We’re they inside?
@@Twinkletoes1O1 It ended up working out. If I remember correctly they didnt quite line up, but I was able to make it work
Can I add those paddles to my e93 wheel? You’re videos are on an Einstein level.
A funny thing, I found this video while looking for a video to plug the holes bc I have the same steering wheel but my car is manual so I do not need shifters bit I want to use the nicer wheel which has shifter pad holes
@vehicular diy .. how about adding a heated steering wheel to your E90.? Maybe modifying your old sports wheel since you have no use for it
ALL X1 steering wheel have that damage. There were some things in the X1 car that caused the same damage to left and right if the wheel in that area. Some more than others. X1 comes with heated steering on most cars in US as well
Hi mine prelci comes with paddleshift, I brought to workshop to replaced the spoilt multifunction button. They replaced for me that button from a non paddle shift steering. I do notice is 4 wire connector to the steering instead of 6. How do I wire this for my paddle shift to work again? Do I just need add 2 wire from the right multifunction button to the other end of steering connector?
Hey brother couldn’t you take the back part of the original steering and put it in the new one? As I am panning to do the same I have flat bottom alcantara steering without paddles but I am buying another m sport steering just for the paddles so can’t I shift the back part of the orignal steering to my alcantara steering and if i can why to cut the back part?
So I can buy a regular E90 sport steering wheel and do those cuts in the side and retrofit paddle shifters?
Hey bro I just bought a custom steering wheel for my 2013 F30. The new one says to re use my trim/buttons/wires/airbag. I just want to know how to remove the buttons and wires from my old steering wheel to the new one. Basically just remove and re use. Can you help please. Would I have to do what you did as in remove the trim piece and the whole thing comes off (trim peace with buttons and wires). I don’t wanna mess something up.
Does anyone know if there is a definitive guide for the rewiring/modifications to the paddles? I need to change my steering wheel from an 07 335i pre LCI M Sport but the cheapest wheels I've found are from LCI models; I could swap the paddles from the pre LCI wheel to LCI then just reinstall but the LCI paddles look much better. I'm just not that handy with electrical work
hello after retrofit of a paddle wheel on 330d e90 from 2007 231cv this one works only in sport mode.
In D mode is it possible to activate manual mode with the paddles?
Attencion model e90 pre lci
Hello, ask about the screw size of the shift paddle lock on the steering wheel, because I bought lci paddles, but different from the screw on ssg, I hope I can get the answer.
hello I have just fitted a paddle wheel on 330d e90 phase1 I was already pre-wired under the wheel I pulled 2 wires or does it only work in drive sport mode? I would like it to work in drive mode as well as originally
if my car doesnt already have paddles fitted can i retrofit them on, i have a bmw e90 lci 320d auto
I have a 2011 bmw e90 without the paddles and I’m putting a 2011 m sport steering wheel on from a e90. Will I have to solder the paddle shifters to work like he did ?
Hello, I retrofit my 330d e90 phase 1 of 231cv of 2007 from a pallet steering wheel and it works only in DS mode or its should also work in drive! An idea?
I know this is an older video, but the lci 335i m sport has bolsters and the paddles. In case anyone else was thinking of doing this.
Could you not just use the back cover from the wheel that come with the new padel shifters instead of cutting up the x1 back cover?
Hello, one padle and two bridges? or in one padle one bridge? thanks
Will the x1 trim piece fit on the original steering wheel?
Amazing Im not sure if bother to drenmek just buy one that’s outfitted for it
i need that part number for that x1 wheel!
Amazing! Thank you so much for this. Question: do all E90 wheels look like this once you dig the rubber out? I guess my question is, can you add LCI paddles to pre LCI, like 2007, non-paddles wheel? I hope I make sense... Thanks!!
I see you already answered that question bellow. Great, thanks!
Can i just swap the newer paddles to the old steering?
Hi man wondering if you still have the steering wheel that come out of you car? I need one
Will a F30/31 wheel bolt straight into my e91 ?
Do you need to do the resistor modification in an LCI model?
hi the 2 pallet sheet there this connect or on the steering wheel
Works the paddle shift only in ds mode or in normal Mode too???
Why did you need the buttons of your old steering wheel ? I purchased a steering wheel with paddle shifters, but it doesnt have the buttons. Can I use my old buttons ? My old steering wheel doesnt have paddle shifters.
Nice. I have e93 320d cabrio. But I don’t have paddle shifters. Want to buy a sw with these shifters. My friend said that he can code it. I found a X1 steering wheel looks like the same as mine with shifters. And it’s LCI luckily ! But I don’t know if it fits for my car. If you see this, please let me know if you can help me about it (:
Why didnt you go with M3 M tech FLAT bottom steering wheel, agressive 10 and 2 grips, alcantera, and TDC racing stripe (red) on top. I will have to modify like you did to my steering wheel. In your case it seems you could have gotten better steering wheel with more upgrades.
I have a 2006 e90 330i sport package that came with the bolster without the shifters/paddles. do u think the brackets will be inside??. Thanks your awesome, also followed your TRANMISSION DIY and car is smooth.
Thank you, yes they all should have that aluminum support on the inside, the casting is the same for the center section. If you want to be certain you should be able to apply pressure and feel it on the inside.
You are like a cuban ! making shit work for real ! thanks
Hey bro, great vid! QUESTION? If you use the original controls from you car with the original harness, will it be plug and play with the new lci paddles? Or just swap the red wire to the middle? or do you still have to remove the resistors inside the new lci paddles?
Maybe the question is too long. How about, if you use the original harness from your 335i and install the new style + - paddles be plug and play?
Hey where did you bought the steering wheel?
use black silikon or heat up the plastick and bend it to fit easy fix
Do you know if a pre-LCI sport steering wheel will work in an LCI E90? I'm trying to convert my base steering wheel to sport and have a pre-LCI one on hand. Awesome work in this video!
Can you put paddle if you don’t have any?
for sale..i have a f30 335 Sport line steering wheel with paddle shifter opening, like new, has red stitching
I wish you provided measurements im scared to take this on without measurements
Do you know if we could update the software on the display to a newer version found in the lci of these cars?
Are you talking about on the gauge cluster?
Is there any way I can add paddle shifters to my e90 even if it never came with any?
Alex Miguel watch nour hummadis paddle shifters video
So I did exactly the same thing as you described however now the upshift works fine but the when I hit down shift it goes to 1st gear without cycling through the other gears !!
Any explanation please ?
What year is your car?
FYI The takata airbag from this X1 is under recall, were you able to get them to swap it or you driving with the defective takata airbag the X1 shipped with?
Yeah I have a new airbag that was replaced under recall.
@@VehicularDIY how did you get them to replace it if it was from a different car was that under the recall for your e90 takata? I've already had mine done but would love to do the upgrade obviously not with the dangerous bag though.
You need a new battery I used to have the same problem with electric power steering once I got the battery changed everything went back to normal it could be the same situation.
My m sport 335d e90 has the paddles and bolsters, u could have just got 1 of those 🤦♂️
Someone picked at it😂😂
Can you give a link to the wheel at 4:19? Because I can't find anything like that anywhere
Search LQK on eBay, they are dismantling company that lists parts on eBay. I found it there.
omg bro the hole is to release the airbag if you have to take the wheel off!!
You should atleast seal the gaps with clear silicone to prevent dust from coming inside the steering wheel
Will this work on an 07 E90 without paddle shifters?
It would provided you can run wires down to your shifter areas to connect the paddles.
Is it weird my 135i has an automatic wheel with the 3 - 10 grip and pre LCI paddles?
I actually lost ds mode and now I have no traction control not sure what happened but it’s something in the steering wheel /:
Did you remove the resistors? Did you ensure that you didn't solder the wrong pads together?
To anyone who knows, if I have a 335i that has the basic steering wheel with no paddles, can I simply buy a whole steering wheel with the paddles & just plug n play? Thank you!
You can buy a sterring whell with the paddles, but it wont be plug and play, you should connect paddles with ur shifter. ruclips.net/video/RIGGt1c3dvI/видео.html this guy explain everything, did on mine 330xd and it works perfeclty.
The "bolsters" are called thumb rests...
can i use the facelift wheel in the prefacelift car?
with the buttons and so on working¨
Yes you can.
My sport pre lci has bolsters , paddles. And silver side trim.
So it didn’t come factory like that 🤔
200 parts what about hours? That's labor
can I buy your old wheel?
Matt Hudak Sure shoot me a pm.
If you get the Full Msport package, it comes with everything the M3 has, minus the engine and guage cluster....
I know this is a Vis is 2 years old I’m looking at doin the retro fit my self as well I found the lci paddles for really cheap but just can’t seem to find the sport steering wheel with the bulster an have paddle shifters with it just seems to be so hard ,my 07 has the bulsters on it but just not paddle shift ,an I don’t wanna hack my steering wheel so trying to find a steering wheel with bulsters an paddle shift holes so I can just insert the lci paddles seems to be extremely hard maybe I’m not using key search words idk
Technically that is why I said "BMW never sold this" in the thumbnail. The combo and look that you see in this video requires that you modify the wheel.
Vehicular DIY yea I’m in a debate with my self might try an scoop up a wheel an see how I do ,but for now I gotta see what’s goin on the driver side ,I purchased bc Coilovers but noticed soemthing May be lose on the driver side so iv postponed install the bc coil overs till I figure it out an as well as a eric braking issue ,got future plans like doin a diy for the vent scope behind the kidney grill but gotta take measurements correctly ur videos are very inspiring keep up the great content ,stay cool #thistexasheatsucks
my brain hurts, all the buttons harness lci,pre lci..oy vAY
There is a common sense option which fixes so many of these things. Do a manual swap. Then you get rid of the crappy steptronic paddle system, and now you have a six speed manual. That fixes everything without all the cutting and problems with the paddles.
He spent over 5 mins before even doing anything
Looks the same!! Lol
Automatic 🤢🤮
