What is even better is seeing one in action that also rotates. I rode one called the Krazy Krewe before Katrina came and destroyed six flags of new orleans that also used to be Jazzland. I swear that was probably the only one of its kind that ever existed and now its gone.
This was actually the ride that got me not to be scared of going upside down on a ride. It has a special place in my heart. Edit: If you wanna know what fair it was, I think it was in 2017 and it was the bravos valley fair and rodeo
It’s funny how It never even dawned on me that the loop o planes were the predecessors to the bigger kamikazes.I’m so appreciative for this series I’m definitely enjoying the knowledge being spilled in all these vids, keep it up👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
P.S. you definitely need to get on one of these especially at the fair probably the most terrifying ride there, especially when they stop at the top and hold you in midair it’s insane!!!
I always think of the Kamikaze as a Loop-O-Plane "on steroids." Many years ago at the NC State Fair (Strates was the midway provider), I saw (or thought I saw) a Rollo-O-Plane themed as a Skymaster, similarly, as it were, "on steroids"--as it was as huge as the Kamikaze. Just like the regular Rollo-O-Plane, the cages spun so that the riders at each end were never suspended upside-down. Ever since seeing (or thinking I saw) this, I have always regretted not asking two questions: What company made it and how many trailers are required to transport it? (I have never seen this ride listed on Strates's rides list and I got in touch with Strates concerning it, but to no avail)? Can anyone reading this help me?
A visually stunning ride. Arms swinging from opposing sides "still" give cHiLLs! As them pass each other. Theming possibilities are endless! Old seems to always be "new" Great video fellows!
I rode Kamikaze at a fair as a kid, and I have never felt less secure on a ride. The over the shoulder "restraints" didn't even touch my body and I spent the whole ride painfully knocking around in that death trap. At least it's pretty to look at lol
The one I rode had this pad in front of your head and my head banged on it so hard and so much there was a huge black mark on my forehead afterwards. It was so painful I will never ride it again 😂
Had to hold myself down with those metal bars they put under ur feet and my skin is completely rubbed off because I'm 4'11 and they probably should have warned me I was going to have a loose guard keeping me from plummeting 35 feet down!
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is my home park, I love Typhoon so much however, it does every now and then shake a bit (probably an anti-get-stuck-upside-down mechanism) that always freaks my brother out. Maybe not the best feeling to feel when upside down but still, fantastic ride and I’m glad you covered it in this video!
Fun Fact, Being from Santa Cruz myself, the old version was an old Fabbri Kamikaze, and the new Typhoon we got as part of the main Entrance Facelift, is the modern A.R.M Kamikaze model. The new Typhoon get's going a lot quicker turning you upside down vs the old one. Never rode the old one because it looked like a total 🤮 fest, but the new one definitely a quicker ride time, like what the Hammerhead Shark was at Discovery Kingdom, until its fairly recent removal. I believe The Santa Cruz County Fair still runs an older model Fabbri model called The Ranger. I still have yet to get on the newer Typhoon. The HammerHead Shark was a Zamperla Hawk 48 model.
In Italy this ride is usually called "Ranger"! I live in Sicily and there is a particular version of Kamikaze II, it's called "Star Trek" and it is perhaps the most beautiful version :D
Having lived here Japan half my life the name kamikaze was always off putting to me but growing up in the Bay Area, I loved me some typhoon! Cheers boys! Good right up! Love from Osaka!
I’ve been on the first version of Kamikaze a hand full of times. Never found it to be enjoyably experience. All you hear is loose dirt and pebbles clattering around the when it starts to reach apex height… then excessive g forces that you can feel distorting your face. Then a full vertical stall for far too long. They were definitely pushing these machines harder back in the late 80’s/early 90’s
These were very common at traveling carnivals in Western New York when I was a kid in the 90s. I vividly remember the whir sound these made! I always referred to them as The Patriot, because a local amusement park, Martins Fantasy Island, had a permanent one and called it that. Please do a video about Paratrooper rides, I was transfixed by those as a kid!
Yes those are awesome. They have in my state of Pennsylvania at Knoebals. It’s one of my most favorite rides and they also have a first version Kamikaze.
I’ve ridden the Banzai at the Meadowlands Fair, Meteor at Dorney Park, The one at Fun Plex in Myrtle Beach, The one in North Myrtle Beach, the one at Kennywood and the Loop o Plane at Keansburg
The Kamikaze ride is a nostalgic part of my early childhood, even if I never went on one until I was an adult. My county fair had one that was the center piece of the ride area. It was this big, looming ride that I loved to watch.
Loved the pic of the Screamin' Eagle (1-armed Zamperla Hawk) in my hometown park of Seabreeze in Rochester, NY! I've never ridden it (not too big a fan of upside down rides) but it's always been a big hit at the park ever since it was introduced in the 90's.
I remember seeing this for years at my local yearly fairgrounds in Manitoba, except it was called Skymaster. One year, in my teens, I finally worked up the courage to go on it and it was amazing. There's nothing like hanging upside down with only the restraint holding you up. It's been around for at least 15 years now, and I ride it every year that I can.
Does anyone else remember this being called The Hammerhead? There were two versions: 1) where the capsule just went upside down, and 2) where the capsule could twist and you would be upside and spinning .
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on this one, it came to the Cali Mid State Fair every summer when I was growing up. My fave was always Gravitron though! Took me a while to finally brave the Kamakazi and when I did I was so proud of myself haha
been on the kamikaze that runs/ran at the north idaho state fair years ago - road it so many times my poor shoulders had bruises from the restrains, lmao. my arthritis hated it, but i was desperate to find something to replace the hi-roller i frequented at east coast carnivals when i was out west. the ride operator gave us some great hangtime after the fourth or fifth board
Rode a single-sided 4-seater Kamikaze at a traveling fair in Crystal Beach, Ontario. By chance of balance or the operator's doing, the thing had 15~ seconds of full inversion hang time near the start of the cycle. We thought the ride had broken before it continued forward, the Gs forcing the blood in our head back down to our feet (at which point we felt broken ourselves). Big thrill small package.
I've only been able to get on the kamikaze once, I'd really love it if they started placing them in amusement parks all over USA. That is one my most favorite rides I've ever been on. Bring the kamikaze back.
What about Fabbri’s ‘booster ranger’ ride which 2 of were produced in the 1990’s, it’s basically a kamikaze except instead of the normal cage it had booster seats on the end of the arm which enables to do tons of flips and create a very intense ride cycle. It kind of reminds me of a mini Mondial capriolo with the way it moves.
We had a floorless one in Australia called the hangover, but somebody had fallen out at the highest point of the ride and I think it’s no longer in operation
First one of these that I can recollect was "Skyflier" at Casino Pier (Seaside Heights, NJ) ... but I was so young that I was too scared to ride it; by the time I conquered my fear of upside-down rides, that ride was gone. However, I've seen many "Kamikaze", "Tomahawk", and "Bonsai" rides at carnivals over the years, and have ridden my share (though not recently). I'm curious as to why there are so many names for the same ride. AFAIK, they're all the same ride; I feel like they're even the same manufacturer. Maybe I'm wrong; I dunno. I've done the Loop-O-Plane at a small carnival that no longer comes. It was OK, but I greatly prefer the "Satellite" at Knoebels.
Ridden a good share of these at travelling shows, or at the very least a solid handful ridden many times over the years since a lot of times the same company would come to town, fun ride, I enjoy these more than a Superloop (Either restraint version) personally, I don't know if it's the smoother experience or the variations in ride cycle the operators can do but there's just something about these that feels more enjoyable to me
We here in Oregon and Washington state local shows have the Kamikaze and are very popular. Also in California some shows have Kamikaze and the floorless type ride, and all that are mentioned are on traveling shows.

Fabric Cataclysm is my favorite version. I saw a one armed version of this at my local fair this past year. It looked to be from the 70s. I can't remember the name or manufacturer though

@@CoasterCollege I'm not sure since it was kinda far away from me but I think there were people since the park was open

The only one I've been on is the Fiesta Shows A.R.M skymaster, "Top Gun"
