How satisfying that is! This is actually what humans have wanted to achieve since the time of Leonardo da Vinci, albeit that we originally were thinking of such a machine that could carry one person aloft. Of course, it took high speeds with enough power to produce it, along with rigid wings to achieve flight, but I think that mastering the mechanics of bird flight has always been in the minds of scientists, and to achieve bird flight in a bird-sized machine satisfies this long quest. da Vinci would be reveling to know his believe that bird flight is replicable in a machine is absolutely true.

Well, it's interesting to see that you do all of this fine-detail engineering, in just as beautiful a way as your woodwork projects...better, in fact. This bird reminds me very much of the Festo 'seagull', but that was done by a big company, with lots of money and manpower... thanks for sharing some of your 'roots' :-)

Took 50 years for this to be possible. We had simple flappers when we were young, but it has taken 5 decades of technology to get to this point. If it had some commercial value, it would be leap years ahead. Thank goodness not everything has to be commercial.

    • @anthonygordon9483

Not necessarily. You can thank the gadget thats in your pocket for making this possible. The evolution of the smart phone has brought down the cost of lithium batteries, bluetooth technology, mobile processors ext. Everything in your phone is used to power drones, planes etc. So its not the fact that we couldn't do it before. Its for the fact that the high demand of phone technology has lead in a drop in cost in these parts that would usually go into a phone can now be placed in other things making it possible for more hobbiest to buy and afford. The power of capitalism when done the right way.

Totally agree. Like a sailplane mode. Birds aren't always flapping their wings to stay aloft (except hummingbirds) . Hawks and other birds glide quite frequently, after all!!!

How do you produce enough forward momentum to allow the mechanic bird to soar? It seem's as though the device loses all momentum once the wings stop flapping, thus it loses altitude and crashes. So I'll state my question once again, how do you produce enough forward momentum to allow the bird to glide long enough to conserve energy?
