As it is Christmas time, this month's 'Sing along' video is a Bach chorale for this festive season. This chorale is Movement 12 from Cantata 2 of Bach's truly epic 'Weihnachtsoratorium' (Christmas Oratorio). It is often associated with Christmas morning and the arrival of Jesus on Earth. There is a lot to enjoy here as you sing along: both the harmony (chromaticism and expressive suspensions) and in the individual vocal lines which paint a musical picture of the text making it a joy to sing.
English translation:
Break forth, o lovely light of morning,
and let heaven dawn!
You shepherd-folk, do not fear,
for the angel tells you
that this weak little boy
shall be our comfort and joy,
compelling Satan as well
and bringing peace at last!
-
Patrick Dunachie - countertenor
Edward Button - countertenor
Julian Gregory - tenor
Christopher Bruerton - baritone
Nick Ashby - baritone
Jonathan Howard - bass

Just love you guys, you are lovely and fantastic !
Wonderful I love the polyphony of the renaissance music, usually the (fermata) is not written in this chorals, as in the Bach's music also.
Well done, gentlemen. Your German pronounciation was perfect - same as your singing.
Such a pleasure and a delight to sing along to these beautiful singing heads and to follow the music as we go. More, please!

Magnífico 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've sung this in my high school choir back in the 70s and church choir as well. The English words we used were not exactly the translation you show but, as I recall, "Break forth oh beauteous heavenly light and usher in the morning. Ye shepherds shrink not with affright, but hear the angels warning. This child now weak in infancy, our confidence and joy shall be. The power of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making."One memorable time singing it was at the funeral of a member of the high school choir the day before our annual Christmas Concert. A very good comforting lyric for the season and situation we were singing. It's one of my favorite chorales by Bach. Another good one from the same oratorio is Rejoyce and sing.
We learned it at grammar school in the 1950's.
🙏💘🙏
Magnifique !
ganz superrrr!!!!
👍❤️💋
Sehr schön gesungen . Danke
Very beautiful. Many thanks for your gift to us. Wishing you a Christmas as beautiful as your singing. 💕💕
I've listened to The King's Singers for many years now but I must admit that I'm a little sad that I no longer recognize a single face...
Das wurde ja pontifikalamtlich zelebriert!
It is beautiful, but it is sung too softly - In my opinion it should sound more promising, "powerful".
terrible. far too slow.
Well, they can't please everyone. BTW, I wish to hear it à la perfido. - Oh, now I'm sounding like a Bolognese bishop in Mozart's childhood time …
