Trains With Manned Helpers On Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania; Amtrak & Norfolk Southern Trains In Pa.

- Norfolk Southern Trains & Amtrak On The Hill. This Is Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania on the Pittsburgh Line. Long trains go almost all the way around you. Manned helper locomotives are used to get trains up the hill and are cut off at Altoona, Pennsylvania. There is also a funicular here but it is currently out of service. It is used to take people from the base of the hill to the top to watch the trains pass around the curve. Right now you have to walk the 194 steps to the top. Railfans come from all around the world to watch trains go around Horseshoe Curve. The main radio frequency changed to 160.875 from the old Conrail frequency.
This video features 6 trains on the hill including a light engine move and an Amtrak passenger train. The Amtrak train was running westbound after just leaving Altoona. Amtrak runs east in the morning and west in the evening. I stopped here on my way home from Strasburg. It had been a few years since I was here last and I discovered that NS changed the main road frequency since I was here last.
Filmed Saturday, June 24, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

My son, Brenden, was the boy you spoke to that rode the Amtrak. He has been waiting for this video and is “in heaven” that you mentioned him. Thanks for making a young rail fan’s day!!
That is awesome! I had a great time talking to him and I am glad to see young railfans keep the hobby going. That was an awesome day!
Thank you very much Mr Senior Jaw Tooth and all the famous railfan videos that you make over the years!! I hope you continue to post more railfan videos in the future. Question? Have you taken a railfan trip to the Midwest like Minnesota Wisconsin Illinois and the Dakotas as something new and different? See you later on the Steel high iron soon!!
@@sntrainzchaserguy6883 The only one of those states that I have filmed in is Illinois. I was in a few spots with Shoestring 2 years ago. He showed me a couple of cool spots to film. I want to go to the giant railroad museum that is northwest of Chicago. They are celebrating an anniversary this year. I read about it in one of my magazines a few months ago. I need to look that up again before I miss it
Jaw tooth I was going to get a scanner were can I get one

Horseshoe Curve has it all rich history, breathtaking landscape, and of course plenty of TRAINS. I just love this place. Thanks JT.👍🏼🚂🤩
Couldn't agree more!
The Horseshoe Curve in Pennsylvania is one of my favorite railroad places in the world!
It looks like an amustment park.
I love it too. Its a good drive there but worth it
The 10 mile curve in Colorado is pretty good as well.
I grew up in Altoona. My friends and I would ride our bicycles up to the curve in the summertime back in the early 60’s. It was about 6 miles each way. We were in good condition riding those old, single speed heavy bikes.
Awesome the good ole days! I remember having a one speed bike like that
Even as a local here, the good old Horseshoe Curve, well, never gets old! It's always a treat when I get to go to it. Glad you could stop by, hopefully you can again soon! There's quite a few more underrated spots in Altoona and beyond too.
I have about 4 more trains to post from the curve. One of them took about twelve minutes to pass. I went to Cassandra, The Brick Yard, Cresson, Gallitzin and Tyrone also
@@JawTooth nice! Can't wait to see them, yeah we've had some pretty long ones recently, Tyrone and the Brickyard are good spots, 10th Avenue just after the expressway in downtown is a good one, I really gotta visit Gallitzin again someday.
Just what I was thinking Ghost. It's beautiful and wish it was closer to my state. Have to enjoy it through these wonderful videos.
Man, I truly enjoyed this video! A park for rail fans! The historic horseshoe all around. A beautiful park with seating and shelter. The vernacular is cool when it's running. Amtrak and NS trains all around and a horn salute everytime! Heavenly!
I hope they cut some of the brush.
The last time I was here a few years ago they had just cut the brush and you could see very well. That spot where they cut it is totally overgrown again. That stuff grows fast
I was going to be in that area a few years ago and was looking at Google Maps for things to do and saw Horseshoe Curve. So glad I took the time to stop there. Great place for train watching. I hit it at a great time, multiple triples and doubles on the tracks. It does look very overgrown, it was nicely manicured when I was there.
I hope they cut it back again soon or we won't see much. Lol. It was cut back the last time I was here
I always like seeing the Horseshoe Curve
it is very beautiful here with great scenery
and also great to see your dogs they are
really beautiful and enjoy seeing them,
Thank You Jaw Tooth.🤠

Love to visit !
Been to Horseshoe Curve several times. It is my grown son's favorite place. He is autistic, and a real rail fan. Last time there we were lucky to see the Southern Heritage Unit (Before it's wreck and rebuild) leading an oil train down around the curve and later Amtrak going uphill headed to Pittsburgh.
Awesome! Thanks for watching my video!
Great video, that brings back memories as we visited Altoona and horseshoe curve way back in the summer of 1993 when it was still Conrail and SD40-2's were helpers. Watching from England, UK.
Horseshoe Curve looks like an amazing place to railfan :) An almost 360 degree view of trains going one way or the other :) Very Cool!
It is really cool and ppl come here from around the world
Looks like a railroaders dream park.
👍👍👍
Yes
Only Jaw Tooth could climb the stairs and still get the entire train! You are the man!
Thanks!
pretty cool to think that i've been on an amtrak train going round that curve back when I was a Freshman in HS. it was an interesting experience seeing the end and beginning of the train. We were allowed to pass another freight on the outside track that wrapped all around the entire curve while we zipped by a nice slow pace round the inside track. Way back near 30 years ago
Wow, that is awesome! I want to do that
That's just a cool place, that Horseshoe Curve, when ya get right down to it, Señor Jaws. Thanks for taking me there ... in a virtual way. You can be darn tootin' sure that you wouldn't want me ridin' with you and the family to get there. ¨Are we there yet?¨ would be the least of annoying things you'd hear from me. Although, I am pretty proud of my trick to put the palm of the hand in the armpit (mine) and toot out the National Anthem ... 🎵José can you see... etc.🎵Gracias por tu video. Have a great Sunday. RT sends, Puebla, México...
@RTWest-kn5fr the Horseshoe Curve is such a magnificent turn, dont you agree
@@LisbonRailProductionsandF1 It got me braying, snorting and feeling my oats (young again), if ya know what I mean. And who could come up with more cool sounding name than 'Altoona'? Those folks know what they're doing, I'm here to tell ya! Puebla, MX.
@@RTWest-kn5fr no problem, mate, i just want to let you know that I subscribed your channel.
@@RTWest-kn5fr i have some cool videos of the trains that you will enjoy a lot.
JT - thank you. The Curve is one reason why I miss living back east. It’s an icon in the story of American Railroading. Thanks for walking up to the top!
You bet! I love going there. Sometimes I walk up instead of taking the tram anyway
I heard several salute toot to all the fans. Cool video. 😊 The scenery was nice and green lots of salute toots that made your day. Puppy loves to play and will keep Chessie on her toes. So cool and enjoy watching them at the end of your filming. Thanks. ❤❤❤😊
Wow how amazing to see trains go up and down on the great horseshoe line!!!nice shot sir jt!! ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you for these images! This famous curve offers incomparable vision for following the progress of trains with a wide 360-degree angle.
You are welcome!
great video. I took my son years ago to the Altoona train museum. He spent hours upstairs playing with the elaborate Thomas theTrain set. Great time in Altoona. At the museum there is a pedestrian overpass where we watched coal trains go underneath us.
Awesome! I have done that also. That is really cool
Great interaction with all generations...... future railway engineers - you never know!
NEAT! Helpers at 14:10. A big boost up the hill and a little drag going down.
Thanks for watching !
Parents took me there 55+ years ago. I was thrilled to see how the tracks wrapped around the lake.
If I get back there, I hope the tram works - my aching knees!!!!
I don't know when they will get it fixed but walking up there when it's hot will sure wear you out. A train was coming when I was there and I worked up a sweat trying to get it
Funicular out of service for over 3 years. I often hear how they are working on it and then waiting for inspection and testing, electrical problems then more testing etc. etc. yet it's still out of service. I'm betting it will be back in service for my next trip to curve in 2024 (if I live that long). I'll check the Vegas line before I place my bet...😁 This is a good video, thanks, I really enjoy the curve!
@@JawTooth OH OH - my wife is older then me. I am going to get some dirty looks if we have to walk up!!! LOL! Thanks for another great video. It brought back a lot of good memories!
@@bobblenuts Hope it is operating when you return, and when I am there again!
It was interesting that the Amtrack conductor had the door open on his car and was standing in it waving!
Because he knows there a camera from virtual rainfan setup there besind rainfan people being there
i love how they made that curve and all the man power it took to do it..i salute all the workers that curve is awesome to watch great catches Jaw Tooth
As usual a great video. As a boy going to Kansas and riding the Broadway Limited, I went around that curve many times. I am currently visiting friends in Cebu, the philippines. I remember going around it early evening and seeing the brakeshoes glowing. That was in the late fifties and early sixties. Again, thanks
Horseshoe Curve is a scenic site for railfans and railroad buffs. You pick the right spots, Buddy! Happy Railroading!
Thanks for watching !
@@JawTooth You are welcome! 👌
Horseshoe Curve is awesome! I will probably never get to visit there so this is just as good. You could spend the entire day here. I would if I could. Thanks Jaw Tooth. Have a nice day 😊🌈
And the puppy looks up as if to say, "do you see this dad? Chessies's on the ground. I'm winning!" Just adorable. ❤ Great video today JT! 😊😊😊
😊 thank you
Sir, you made my day! I am a disabled veteran and I too, love trains and planes. When I am well, I hope to ride Amtrak from Tampa to as far as it goes to the northeast. From there, I will ride to Miami and back to Tampa. Of course, I will be resting in the sleeper car and enjoying everything. Thank you and big hugs to all!
Another great train video. Thank you
Nice ❤️ 👌 👍 view great 👍 👌 trains
Thank you very much!
I'm so pleased when you film at the horseshoe curve. One of my favourite places in the world that I want to visit. Great upload and great channel. I appreciate all your hard work filming and editing for our enjoyment. 😊
Many thanks!
There's no curve like Horseshoe Curve. Thanks for sharing Brian.
Look tehachappi loop its really unique . I love to go visit horseshoes curve altoona one day look beautiful there
Remember visiting here back in the 70s as a child watching the Penn Central Alcos and Uboats battle the hill. Great video!
You had quite a few railfans watching with you while you filmed these awesome trains Mr JT. We really enjoyed them as well as your fur babies. Thanks. Have a good day 😊
Thank you very much! I think most of the ppl there knew me. I had a lot of ppl wanting a picture with me. LOLZ
Great video and explanatory commentary . . . . .I always learn something interesting! 👍The doggies at the end are a plus!😊

Nice to see the Curve from a human view. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
What a beautiful filming location! Thank you for capturing it perfectly On camera for us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love to see the kids running and screaming.
Someone has to pick up where we left off!
Wondered whether you knew the gradient of that rail horseshoe at Altoona ?
What a great view for ALL the fans.
Not too long before I qualify for that Senior discount, pity I'm in a different country, ha ha 😂❤
Thanks J.T 👌👨👩👧👦📸💚
Love it when you film here tooth! Cool that the engineers acknowledge the rail fans there!
Me too! I will have another video from here soon
Nice catch! Seeing that Amtrak reminds me how disheartened I am about Amtrak 92 derailing north of me the other day. 😢
I frequently try to catch the 92 and 97 at West Palm Beach.
My goal is to ride the Auto Train. I filmed down there at Sanford once a few years ago. This winter I want to get the Brightline
@@JawTooth ,
Let me know if you come to South Florida to ride Brightline. I can get you on it anywhere between Miami and West Palm Beach. I don't have any pull in Orlando. 😂
@@DPGIII Awesome! A couple years ago I was going to film it with a friend and we had car problems and cancelled. I will be down there again in either January or February. Remind me in case I forget because I do want to film it. My memory is getting bad. I was supposed to see a Styx tribute band last night and totally forgot.
@@JawTooth ,
10-4. Will do!
LOVE this place, stayed 3 hours and saw 7 trains when I was there--MANY need DPU on the hill here. Virtual Railfan has camera here 24/7
Absolutely first rate, hope to get there some day. I spent several hours with my friends' 2 year old grandson yesterday showing him yours, gambits' and WWOTs' videos. His mother was impressed at how family friendly and polite the videos are. Loved the action in this one, thanks JT!
Thanks for watching ! I want my videos to be positive and family friendly
So koool ...so gentle sir lots of love .
Hey you’re in my neighborhood! I wish they’d fix that darn funicular because of my bum knee I can’t manage the stay. So I appreciate the virtual visit.
Nice shirt JT! Amtrak is passing after 5pm and 9:50am so you caught the former. Nice.
Wow 😮. Does that ever sound good coming up the hill! 😊😊😊
I think so!
I remember the bright spot it put in your day when the truck drivers and train engineer would knowledge the skinny kid by blowing the horns 😊
The flatcar can carry anyting. You cannot beat the versatility that a flatcar offers.

Good Morning 🌅🌄
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo comme toujours ! ✨✨
Railfan heaven, Horseshoe Curve. I was
in 2008. It’s amazing how the trees are blocking some of the view compared to 15 years ago. Thank you for taking the stairs, JT. Tough climb, but well worth it.
They cut them back a few years ago and they already grew up worse than they were. Hopefully they will cut them again
Again JT watching enjoying and beautiful country too AWESOME VIDEO Jaw Tooth I'm rail fan too Again awesome ❤
Another cracking video JT. There can be fewer better places for anyone to watch trains. My mum used to take me and my brothers to watch the trains arriving and leaving Southampton Central Station UK from a park area above the tunnel that was just to the east of the station. We spent hours there. It was mainly steam trains back then.
Cool, I wish I could go there too
I've always thought that the horseshoe curve would look GREAT on a model layout. Nah, that car didn't say anything bad......depending on you pronounce it... 😜
great horn on 1832 and a Another cracking video
Nice shots on the Horseshoe Curve JT! Can’t wait for your videos from Strasburg.
Cool catch’s
I like the old Pennsylvania Railroad #7048, an old GP-9. Horseshoe Curve is my favorite spot in the East and Tehachapi is my favorite spot in the West.
Over A Century Of Man versus the mountains and even with all the advances in technology it's still the great equalizer in transportation. One could make a fortune selling earplugs up there
Great video my friend, i liked it! Greetings from Brasil 🇧🇷
Thanks for the shoutout for the Rock Island covered hopper at 13:17 on the video. Every time I see one I wonder if it’s one I may have helped to build when I worked at Thrall Car in the late 70’s/early 80’s.
Very cool!
I have been to the Curve twice now and want to go again before summer ends. So cool to hear those locos wide open in run 8 just crawling up the grade. You can hear em coming from a mile away and so cool hearing the horns echoing through the valley. Nice video!!
Power units getting a workout and a half going up this grade. 💪
Nice work!
Really liked the video on the horseshoe curve I used to live in sideman pa keeping coming please
Amazing videos Jaw tooth keep up the good work
You know how to get around! I’m keeping a list of future rail-fan stops from your videos!
Awesome! A few of them in the city areas might be a little sketchy though. lol
Love that Amtrack locomotive. Looks 2nd best to the ones from 80s.
Thanks for watching !
You really get around! This is my neck of the woods. I live about an hour from HSC and visit there 3-4 times a year. Thanks for capturing this. I love the SD70ACUs, and I can never hear too many K5HL's. The last time we were there, there was an EB with 28 cars with JD tractors. As for the manned helpers, I thought they provide dynamic braking, but it was explained to me by a moderator on the HSC chat that they push the trains downhill, and the leading engines do the braking to keep the slack out of the couplers.
Very interesting about the engines. I have more video to post from there when I can put it together. 28 cars of tractors would be epic to see!
Thanks for sharing! I've always wanted to go the the Horseshoe. I remember my grandfather (born 1901) used to tell me stories about going around the Curve. He worked for the Pennsylvania.
That is awesome! I can image the steam engines working hard on the grade
As a disabled vet came there once and it was great took me an hour to get up those stairs wasn't worth it yes when you ever come up the Connecticut check-out cedar Hill yard in New Haven Connecticut friends of cedar Hill yard working group check them out they're restoring the Western are doing an awesome job you bring back great memories can no longer make the climb
I was just looking at that area on Google Maps. There is some great train activity in that area. I saw a bridge with a sidewalk over the railroad tracks just south of the big railroad yard. Maybe someday I could get there
My uncle who work for the Pennsylvania railroad would tell me train stories and there would be to i1 decapods on the head end of the train and there would be two of them on the rear of the train with the caboose bringing up the rear. You could not push a man to caboose because wood cabooses were famous for getting crushed it's not even safe with a steel caboose. I have seen pictures of that are awesome. New York central's water-level route was much quieter at night than listening to 4. K-4 Pacific to on the head end and two on the rear end.
My nephew was that boy on the train that you talked to and he showed me the video and he was very excited about it.
Wow, that is awesome! I remember him and his aunt. I'm glad he had a good trip to Altoona and got to ride Amtrak.
Thanks for you Videos JT, the whole Altoona area has many great train viewing spots. Friends of mine, we go there 2 times a yr. Yes "helpers" are what they're called because they are manned. Not only for climbing up from Altoona but to keep trains slowed down coming down. If you look down the valley towards the Reservoirs Altoona is down near the bottom of those. It's quite a hard pull up to there. An over looked place is Downtown Altoona where there's an enclosed bridge over the tracks is a great spot. Especially in Evening there are lights so you can see trains coming down from the Curve as well as ones going up. It ,however closes at 8:00PM sharp. There's another open one that doesn't close.
Thanks! Heading to Altoona in mid-September for a visit to the Horseshoe Curve and to attend the N Scale show. Will be swinging down to Strasbourg either before or after. First road trip south of Scranton since moving here 9 years ago.
I get to catch at most two trains on a good day on our single track Sunbury line. But on the plus side, I can catch trains on both the Martins Creek Viaduct (Kingsley Bridge) and the very impressive Tunkhannock Ciaduct.
Love your videos I actually live in Altoona
It's even more fun in the fall - right when the leaves are turning. I spent my early 20's there quite often. I'm in my 50's now, and it's been a long time since I've been there. Maybe I should again before the years creep up on me even further, and I can't at all. Glad to see the "Geep" is still there as well. Now I have to break out all my photo albums lol.
And if you can do the Amtrak ride, it's worth it from that angle - it completes the whole "Curve" experience.
And there's a place in Gallitzin where you can watch them as well. Not sure if it's still there, or if it's free, but we spent a lot of time there too.
Yes, you can watch them from the park in Gallitzin or on the bridge. Its free. I have stayed at the Inn there by the tunnel. Awesome place.
Tractors came out of Waterloo, IA.
That squealing between the mountains has to be quite deafening 😮
Great video as always thumbs up
Thanks for the visit
Glad you could make it to the Horse Shoe Curve Great catches Of train movement there. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you very much!
I ride through the 'Curve once a year on Amtrak on the way to Pittsburgh. When you're actually _on_ the train it's mind-boggling the first time you realize how far up your train has to climb from one side of the valley to the other. As you're exiting the curve and are seated near the rear of the train, you can see the locomotive pulling you _and_ the very obvious-looking uphill that it's climbing, knowing how difficult it is for trains to climb hills. Imagine what it must look like to a _freight train_ engineer.
dear jaw tooth man i tell ya u go to incredible places u see lots of freeights w many kinds of locomotives weather steam or disel i love all u do i too love the scenery tunnels bridges trestles-god made them soooooooooo special
Thanks for watching my videos!
Would be cool to have a drone follow the trains around the curve.
Absolutely 💯
Never fails me just how much mixed freight goes by rail in the USA. In the U.K. we are mainly limited to container trains and single type freights such as oil, bauxite, and cement. Most freight trains seem to be permanent way trains moving ballast and rail
Where in The UK do you live?
