Those are SD90 chassis you see - they have been deranged of their original motor. The last beasts on the curve were. SD80MACS / Conrail Cadillacs, but sadly there are now being scrapped. Search the tube for "sd80Mac madness" to see a real monster coal train on this line. 45KHP.
A truly awesome feat of engineering. The bad guys in WW2 wanted it destroyed so badly, and it wouldn't surprise me if our strategic opponents have an eye out for the Horseshoe as well. Another fine video, JT - thank you!
I've seen the Horseshoe Curve on Virtual Railfan Camera several times it is great place to see the trains going by with the park there for people to see them go by and great to see the dogs making an appearance playing around,Thanks Jaw Tooth. 🤠🐕🦺🐈⬛🐎🐐🇺🇲 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🇺🇲💨
There used to be an observation platform in Cresson, PA...not far from the Curve. And it's free - might want to look into that. No, it's not the Curve, but there's other stuff nearby - like nice bathrooms and food
Hi JT, I never get tired watching the trains around the great horseshoe curve. The best railfan park but should be free to walk up the steps the train has been in maintenance a long time. N/S are my favourite trains. Friendly crews as well! Fab video JT. ❤😊
Hey jaw tooth awesome location. Seeing the train in the distance at horseshoe curve reminds me of my mom's place. Trains there coming up the hills through the trees and mountains. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
Very nice video of 'The Curve', Jaw Tooth! Naturally, before the leaves come out in the spring, and after they drop in the autumn, the visibility is much better. Always happy when you visit and video Pennsylvania (I'm a proud, full blooded native of Pennsylvania). How about starting my golden years (I turned 65 on 9/24/23) the best way I can think of and give me a belated birthday "Shout Out"? [PLEASE!]
Those green Bay Line cars (hoppers/gondolas) were originally used for wood chip loading on the Bay Line (original reporting mark ASAB). I used to vacation in Panama City, Florida, and had seen them there.
When I visited in about 1989 I payed nothing to visit the park. It should not cost anything to walk up the steps. The only cost should be to ride the little vehicular. 12 dollars is a ridiculous amount to charge to visit a park. Most parks cost nothing. You can walk right in.
The Horseshoe Curve is privately owned by the Railroad museum in Altoona, and by Norfolk Southern Corp. It costs money to maintain this site. It does not receive money from federal, state, or County. Therefore the fee.
@JawTooth I hope to meet with you at harrisburg yard been wanting to railfan with you for almost 8 years I don't drive so it would be nice seeing you in the area of harrisburg
Awesome record JT, such a beautiful place... Norfolk Southern is my favorite company for sure, the livery is just amazing on those powerfull locomotives The animals in the end is the cherry on top..you have a good and peaceful life, cheers!!
JT, next visit you should stay at The Station Inn in Cresson. Sit on the porch and watch trains with other railfans. Talk with a REAL steam train engineer/owner Tom. No TV's but real good home cooking for breakfast. Less cost too.
That would be cool! I have stayed there before. I loved it. When I stayed there I got to see a rail grinder go by at night. When I was there in June they didn't have any open rooms.
We usually get way too much rain. This year was just right. I will be in Goshen Virginia here one of these weekends to film 611. I couldn't go this weekend because of soccer
Friendly crews , horn salutes, manned helpers, and train variety, horseshoe curve has it all. Coal trains have always been my favorite growing up. Very nice JT.👍🏼😎🚂
The oversized gons are old woodchip gons now hauling either trash or construction/demolition (C&D) debris. Some of the Class I RRs keep them around for MW/tie service.
The furnicular is still down? When I was there in July, it was on the verge of getting put back into service and was only awaiting an "inspection" after repairs were done. If I had known you were there, I would have taken the 3 hour trip to swing by and say hi.
The CSX unit probably wanted to see the summit of the Alleghenies at some location other than Sand Patch. One can imagine all the items they have traveled here so for the oddity award today the former wood chip cars now earn their keep hauling demolition debris which includes new construction rubbish. HIRR is the Hainesville Industrial RR in that New Jersey namesake city. According to their website it is headed for subsidiary Creekside landfill near Toledo OH. Whatever the car loading the trains they makeup and the sounds they make certainly make for an experience for all who are present to witness it
Awesome video, really interesting place to watch trains. But $12 just to get up there to watch them, I always thought it was a Park open to the public, I can see charging to use the lift, huh oh well.
Cassandra on the West Slope 13 miles West of Horseshoe Curve has a footbridge over the NS mainline and has a picnic area shaded with trees and is free of charge and volunteers at Cassandra keep it mowed and trimmed of brush and vegetation .
Thank you JT for the info on Horseshoe Curve. A place we are determined to visit soon! As always, a great great video! As is each and every one. Awesome trains! Great to see the engineers interact with the folks watching and give a good wave.
Very cool to see some big 'ol SD90's on the end of that first downhill train.

Nice work
Thanks
Hi have the best day
thanks and you too!
Thank you
Last time I was there , which was back in the late 70s or early 80s, I was able to go all the way there for no money. I was great.
My father was a rail fan but never missed a teaching moment we always counted the cars in every train which I still do
Fantastic Video!

What a beautiful spot and perfect for train watchers .
Pity they don’t maintain it better, it has such awesome potential
Good Video Jawtooth

This place is on my bucket list. Been through Altoona but never made it to the curve. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Mine also,I used to go past it on route 22 to Altoona pa for delivery freight

It's like maybe fifty degrees

Totally agree. They should only charge if you are riding on the incline.
Thanks!@@FabianDiazTrainsTrucksNCars
Now that was interesting I need to go visit there since I Love trains so much
Go for it!
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
hello jaw it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy

Hey jaw tooth awesome location. Seeing the train in the distance at horseshoe curve reminds me of my mom's place. Trains there coming up the hills through the trees and mountains. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
Sounds great! That is cool that your mom lives near the railroad
Cool tanker train! 😊😊😊❤❤

Thanks for the info Brian. I am thinking of going to the Curve this month sometime.
Have fun!

Hey Jaw Tooth-love your videos bro- All helpers are manned on HSC. They cut off at the top and run back light.
Cool, thanks

Yeah and they close at 5 pm.
The Horseshoe Curve is privately owned by the Railroad museum in Altoona, and by Norfolk Southern Corp. It costs money to maintain this site. It does not receive money from federal, state, or County. Therefore the fee.
The admission fee also gets you admission to the Railroaders Museum in Altoona.

Great film. I'm going out trackside at harrisburg yard tomorrow today's to windy for me.
Awesome! I hope you get some good action. I love that area

Awesome place if you go up the line to when wingap there is what is left of a round house and the turn table great video thanks Brian
Cool, thanks
Thanks for another great video.
Decent amount of Conrail on that first train.

The tall "gondolas" are probably wood chip cars.
The hill is hard... and the descent fast at this ideal filming location. You need power to get up the hill... and good brakes to get down!
You've had more rain this summer than we had in Virginia, our corn looks sad.

Nice video I love horseshoe curve
A Drone on that first curve would have been nice!!!!
that would be cool!
Bom dia🙏
Olá 😊
I got rid of snakes in my yard by shoving sticks into all the holes i could find... it worked... haven't seen a snake in nine years.
I can see why the coal train had two DPUs. That train was long!! They are one of my favorites too, JT. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Nice long mixed freight. I liked the green gondolas! Great video JT! 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
Awesome place--24/7 coverage on Virtual Railfan RUclips--DPUS get used often on the curve to help ascent and slow decline.

What a job 😅
My parents brought me there in the 70s and we watched the parade of Penn Central geeps and old Alcos.
that was a great time to be there! You also got to see the cabooses

Great to see you at the curve. I live like 2.5 hrs from there and visit once or twice a year. DPU ICU. JT rules.
Very cool!
😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The brakes on the downhill tank train sounded pretty “tanked”.
Those bay line gondolas are really cool. I think they are woodchip hoppers?
Yes, they probably are
I spied some consecutively numbered tanker cars in a row, they must be pretty fresh to be in order still.
thanks for watching!

194 steps!
Six axles on the engines... heavy train.
Do they ever have any trains meet on the hill
Yes
Great group of trains. Which doggy was barking at the chickens? Why are the white chickens so assertive? Thanks, Jaw Tooth.

Do you still have film from the train parade to upoad or did I miss Mrs. T's?
I bet it would be pretty at Horseshoe Curve with the leaves changing?
Flange greasers please!!

I'm sure that's a repeat, because that funicular was broken before!
I filmed a bunch of trains and made 2 or. 3 videos
@@JawTooth Showing them out of sequence!
Something may be not so different: did you ever came across this site on RUclips: Practical engineering: Why Are Rails Shaped Like That?
There is a battery plant in Kansas. It is using coal for their power. You can't make this up
Lol pretty cool 😂
