"Wolfwalkers" isn't that emotionally wrenching i suppose but its for sure very emotionally strong and beatiful modern 2D animated movie

Astro-boy, Up, and Mars Needs Moms. Don’t want an animated movie there’s The Best of Me, Bridge to Terabithia, My Girl, Old Yeller, and Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Sadly the little girl Judith Barsi (who played Anne-Marie) died before this movie was released. Her and her mother were in an abusive controlling relationship with her father that ended up with all of them dying. I think knowing this fact makes this movie that much sadder.
That's crazy because I was just going to mention that in my comment before I ended the comment and you put that on there so shout out to you. It's sad like she didn't get a chance to see this movie it kind of reminds me of like the actors who died before the release of their movies they were in just like the Brandon Lee situation.
She was so tiny and cute too, her dad was so heartless, gone too soon.

Rip to the voice actress of Anne-Marie as she and her mother were being controlled by her abusive father who later killed them not too long after the movie and she was just 10 years old

If you want to legitimately be destroyed, watch Grave of the Fireflies. However, it is an extremely heavy movie with lots of dark topics. While the movie is beautifully animated and talks about an important time in history, I can say that I never want to see it again. Once a lifetime is all you need for that movie.
Edit: to give you an idea of what it’s like, I found myself full blown sobbing within the first five minutes. It’s not an easy movie.
I. Feel the same way. I remember watching it when I was 14 because I thought, "oh a Studio Ghibli movie. It'll be fun." It was indeed not a fun time. I absolutely love it to this day, but I cannot stomach it. I fully had a breakdown throughout the entire watch. I think what really tipped me over the edge is when Seito found out Setsuko was eating little rocks and buttons when she had no more of her favorite candies or any other food to eat. I just... related a lil too much for that one

Highly agree grave of the fireflies is really sad. But the animation is truly amazing. I believe you can watch it on Hulu, or I think it’s on HBO

Nah same man that movie fucked me up but I still consider it to be the (narratively) best Ghibli movie. I do listen to the soundtrack all the time though when writing sad scenes.
The little girl that voices Anne Marie also voices Ducky in Land Before Time.
This was the last film she ever did before she was murdered.
You are definitely right that watching it as a child leaves fond memories of this movie. The saddest part for me was always Anne-Marie's song, which became even sadder when I learned of her death and that she herself couldn't sing the song.
She didn't sing the song because it was deeply traumatizing for her. She was alive for it but because it was going back home and going home to her was going to her abusive father it really freaked her out. Such a trajedy
This movie has a G rating. Most Disney animated movies don't have G ratings anymore, and this contains gambling, heavy drinking, smoking, murder, attempted murder, fist fights, kidnapping, graphic depictions of hell, and has a kill count.
God I love 80's family movies.
Well it should be noted PG-13 wasn't a thing until after the likes of Indiana Jones 2 and Gremlins had skirted the lines of PG. So the lines of between G, PG, and R were a lot more broad then before PG-13, so in this time it was still in the early period of such ratings and changing standards.
This movie released on the same day as The Little Mermaid and the critics were so unfair in comparing everything to that movie. Maybe they were right here and there, but both movies have equally brilliant animation.
Oh, my childhood movie. I was always aware of the gambling, drinking, death, homelessness, etc. Within this movie. Being an adoptee and loving animals from a young age, I felt so connected to this movie. Thank you for your reaction Sophia!

15:30: *sighs* they had no choice but to get a different VA to provide her singing voice...Judith broke down crying in the recording booth trying to sing the song because of the troubled home life Rin mentioned...it's what led her mother to basically be ordered to take Judith to a therapist...
When I was 3, I watched my dog get hit by a car and die and after that I watched this movie over and over, I think it actually really helped me cope because it showed that the dogs are ok after they are gone. I liked the scenes of heaven, and the scenes that stick out to me the most are the puppies eating the sloppy pizza and the alligator scene. I have such a special place in my heart for this movie ❤️❤️

Speaking as someone who did grow up with this movie and has fond memories of it yes I admit it is a little boring at some points while the movie didn’t have as much dog death as you would expect remember this is still meant for young children but even so looking back the movie was pretty dark in its own way it’s at least darker than the sequel movies and the tv show but that’s just me great reaction Sophia 👍🏼
If you REALLY want to cry, you’ve got to watch “A Dog’s Purpose”. If you haven’t already, that’s definitely a tear jerker.
Siskel and Ebert gave this a mixed review, saying it's too scary for kids but some parts of the movie are hilarious, and the darkest scene was that the main dog character went to Hell, which deemed to frightening for young viewers.
watching this as an adult it's way too dark for children. Mob bosses trafficking an orphaned child and the boss kills his underboss who is granted a second chance and in the end the boss and underboss are dead lol. But it's animated so somehow that type of hard hitting narrative is supposed to be safer lol
Don Bluth definitely primed me for loving the dark and psychedelic. There was a grittiness that somehow made his stuff feel more magical.
Also, I just realized that my favorite Anime, Yu Yu Hakusho, is kind of the reverse of this idea--where they didn't have a spot for him in heaven cause he was such a pos in life that they didn't expect him to die heroically lol
I have never been able to understand why, but the opening sequence where Charlie goes to heaven, leaves, and is told he can never come back just yanks the tears out of me every dang time, there's a couple other sentimental scenes in this movie but that's the one that does it for me. The closing scene with the fire on the water was pretty effective too. Yeah, I saw it when I was a kid and I'm sure that's a big part of why it impacts me as much as it does, but it hasn't dulled with age at least. This was my introduction to your channel and it was a fun ride!
Honest to God I don't think this was ever meant to make people sad, it was meant to scare the sh*t out of really little kids and make parents wonder what Bluth was smoking to show it to little kids.
Now imagine seeing this when you're 6 or 7 in the late 80s/early 90s...you have maybe a cursory understanding of Heaven and Hell, you know you achieve one by being good and one by being bad. Then this film comes along and it really doesn't shy away from the the bad things that Charlie does (and loves) in life that SHOULD send him to hell; gambling, drinking, kidnapping (casual racism?) and fraud. Of course, being a dog, he gets a "get out of hell free" card...but then he spits in the face of Heaven by going back to Earth and racking up another two or three hundred vices that will seal his fate. It wasn't until I saw this around age 13 that I had the same reaction YOU did to the whole 'Angel tells Charlie he can never come back to Heaven' thing; it was almost identical.
And the dream sequence? JESUS. Hell isn't just this massive, fiery, frightening place where the demons torture you, they have a Don Bluth Gleeful attitude about it. That was scary at age 7! And yeah yeah yeah the 'fallen angel' parallels are obvious now, but at the time, it really felt like Charlie's fall from grace was permanent. Honestly, I feel bad for Itchy...he was the sensible one here. Leave town, start over, get clear of the guy who killed you in the first place. He was a good friend to Charlie and Charlie basically dismissed him because Charlie NEEDS to live the high life, surrounded by flunkies and friends and his piers, made to look and feel above everyone else...very Lucifer Morningstar. The exchange at the end is sweet and made me tear up a little I suppose, yeah, but the imagery that sticks with me will always be the literal river of Hell that Charlie has to look forward to when he dies...creeped me out.

The nostalgia critic refers to moments with the alligators as a “big lipped alligator moment” it is something that adds no context to the story, is never referenced again, and has 0 influence on the plot. Like the fire eaters from Labrynth

When you find out that Judith Barsi the little girl who voice Anne-Marie died cause her dad got jealous cause of the money she was earning from being a child actress and killed her for it, the movie becomes really sad considering the fact that she died before it was over and unfortunately they did have to find a new child actress for the singing part. It's just heart breaking that the goodbye part at the end of the movie was the last scene she had act, it was the last movie she ever did since I found end of the movie has made me cry. I know my comment is one year off but if she was still alive in 2022 she would been 43 years old her life was taken too soon, she had a bright future too and it was taken from her rest in peace Judith, may you still shine bright in heaven. (oh I should of kept watching oops still rest in peace but still oops)
You should watch Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. I think it's one of DreamWorks' best, banger soundtrack, stellar animation, pretty good plot! It's also hella sad in some parts, but I'm not gonna spoil it 👀 I'd just love for you to react to this because it was one of my favourite childhood movies and it still holds up I think!!

Man, this one for sure unlocked a memory. I remember i watched it a lot as a kid tho i don't really remember that much elements of this movie, but i suppose its a situation with most of Don Bluth less succesfull movies (in local movie rental there were a lot VHSes of those, funnily i never watched those most classical Don Bluth's movies maybe except "Land Before Time")
I will say, while the I do hold a soft spot for the movie as well (as I had a VHS of it as a kid), today the movie's a mix-bag for me. My biggest gripe being the plot, because while it was it's strong point, it was also it's weak point as well. And you can tell, due to the many edits that were made. It's a shame, because Don Bluth had an original cut which had it's darker moments and maybe more character development (This is the same thing they did to The Land Before Time). But whether it was good or not, I digress. So if I was making the movie I keep it like this:
The 1st act will stay, as well as the half of the 2nd act, where Charlie and Itchy "rescue" Anne-Marie when they learn what Carface is using her for, Carface realizing Anne-Marie's gone and the whole bedtime sequence. Now for the next part of the act, here's what should change: creating Charlie's revenge. You see, I always found it odd that Charlie states how he's gonna make Carface pay for what he did to him, yet he's using Anne-Marie to build another casino, when he should be laying low, since Carface still at the time thinks he's dead. And opening up a casino with YOUR NAME ALL OVER IT, isn't very smart. So here's what should happen instead:
Charlie's plan for revenge is to blow the casino boat with Carface inside (Charlie: He's gonna watch as everything he's has be destroyed. Then its his turn.). Once they do, Charlie has a getaway plan as well (which I explain more in detail soon), and him and Itchy will make their escape. However, Charlie needs money in order for the materials in order for the plan to work. So that's when he decides to use Anne Marie communicate with animal racers and place bets on the winners. And with their money, they buy their ammo/explosives, and secretly stick them onto the boat so when the time is right, they blow it up. But during one of their bets, a dog who happens to work for Carface, notices Charlie in the audience and goes to tell Carface (Also, keep that scene where Carface attempts to murder Killer and Killer states he has a gun; but not a "ray gun". In the original, the recording was "A REAL gun.".).
We can still keep the "Anne-Marie looking for a family" subplot, but here's what'll happen: during their prepping, Anne-Marie wants out because of Charlie not keeping the end of his promise to help the poor and find her a family. So that's when they go to the abandoned church where Flo raises the orphaned puppies and feed them. Here we get more development with Flo where not only is she a former girlfriend of Charlie, but has some business in laundering money and goods and smuggling pets out of the town. Charlie makes a deal with her into helping him and Itchy get on a plane out of the city, but doesn't mention his plans for revenge on Carface to her.
We keep the sequence of Anne-Marie finding the stolen wallet of Harold and Kate, the "Soon You'll Come Home" song, Charlie's Hell nightmare (fully restored), Anne-Marie's visit to Kate and Harold, Charlie manipulating Anne-Marie into coming back with him, the Carface shooting (fully restored; when re-watching, you can tell it was re-edited to be less violent), and here we see more elements to the watch where it basically shows that it gives Charlie immorality and healing powers, unless something happens to the watch (like it stops ticking). We have the whole scene with Charlie and Anne-Marie falling into the water in that abandoned building, but remove the entire alligator sequence (Seriously, why was that even in there?). Instead, we have them falling through the sewers trying to find their way out, only to head down a waterfall, leading to Anne-Marie contracting pneumonia.
Itchy, in the meantime is walking down the street with some more supplies for the revenge plan, only to get attacked by Carface and his thugs but manages to escape despite receiving some bruises. We have Charlie trying to find medical attention for Anne-Marie with Flo and Itchy confronting Charlie there, Charlie in anger states that he's using Anne-Marie and plans "dump her in an orphanage", Ann-Marie hearing everything and running away tearfully, and here we are shown that Carface managed to follow Itchy to the abandoned church, where him and his thugs hide from behind and kidnap Anne-Marie, and Itchy realizes that it's them, not Charlie. Charlie then decides that's he has to for once try and fight for someone other than himself and goes to save Anne-Marie, even convincing Itchy into doing so (Since Itchy states earlier that he believes Charlie treats Anne-Marie like she matters more than him.).
Charlie and Itchy then go on their rescue with Charlie attempting to get Anne-Marie out, but is confronted by Carface once more and a fight ensues but accidently causes a fire and Charlies realizing the explosives are still on the boat has to get Anne-Marie out fast. Carface's death can be the same, except instead of the comedic alligator, Carface is confront by real scary and well drawn ones (Kinda similar to the designs of the T-Rex, in Bluth's previous film The Land Before Time.). Charlie ending up sacrificing his watch to save Anne-Marie, and dying in the explosion (Also, remove Killer helping Anne-Marie to shore and have him get his comeuppance as well, since we are shown in the film that he's still evil, so him saving her feels unearned.). And then we have the emotional ending where Itchy, decides to stay with Anne-Marie, as it would be what Charlie wanted, Charlie being forgiven, and given the chance back to Heaven, his final goodbye to Anne-Marie and returning to Heaven.
And just like that, you have the perfect All Dogs Go To Heaven movie.
Sad fact: the little girls also voices ducky from the land before time series and on her tombstone it's says yup-yup 😢 r.i.p young one you were takin too soon

This was one of the movies I adored as a kid, and its what made me love German Shepards so much ( At least Im pretty sure Charlie is one) I would watch this movie so many times on VHS.
This movie legitimately scared me as a child, like I was terrified of it. But I also loved it, I loved Charlie! And I used to love Land before Time too, but ever since I found out about the little girl I can only watch either of these movies when I'm ready to be sad.
Interesting you're talking about Don Bluth and Disney as Bluth started off animating for Disney working on films like Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood and the Rescuers. Also directed "The Small One" for Disney. So, the fact that Anne Marie looks like Snow White might be deliberate. Kind of ironic that Bluth trying to get away from Disney considering Anastasia was distributed by 20th Century Fox which is now Disney.

I've always loved Don Bluth films, even more than Disney. They seem so much more real and gritty and there are real stakes going on. plus the songs were bangers in his films. Thumbelina, Fievel Goes West, and All Dogs were such a big part of my childhood .

Itchy's voice actor sounded so familiar, I couldn't put my finger on it until it finally clicked that he also voiced Jeremy in the Secret of NIMH
And he also voiced Tiger in an American Tail and in the non-Bluth directed sequel. Also for Bluth he voiced the title character in (UGH!) A Troll in Central Park. Interestingly he worked with Disney when he voiced Fagin in Oliver and Company. He really was a voice of a lot of our childhoods really.

Love Survives was not originally written for the movie. It was added before All Dogs Go To Heaven was in theaters. Judith Barzy starred as Anne Marie and in 1988 her abusive father murdered Judith and her mom in cold blood. Judith's father later killed himself within days of killing Judah and his wife. one time there was a death in Judith's family before she died. The mom had a family member die. Her husband Joseph hid the letter letting her know so she couldn't go because she didn't know. Some years before their deaths Judith starred in a true crime movie about a man who murdered his wife and kids. Scarry considering what happened.
Charlie's nightmare gave me nightmares, I remember. The sounds, the monstrous boat in the lava, the reaper sitting on the boat. It was terrifying. It still is a little bit.
This movie gets a lot sadder and have a deep meaning when you learn about Judith Barsi (she played Anne-Marie) and when the character sings about having a good house a family....
If you want heartbreaking Don Bluth, that's Secret of NIHM, Land Before Time and An American Tail. Those are the Triumvirate of Bluth Classics.

This movie was released after Judith Barsi's death, and, back when Burt Reynolds was alive, one could imagine that heartfelt final talk between Charlie and Ann Marie but the roles reversed.
Fun fact: this movie taught me what an orphan was back when I was a little kid
For a tear-jerking but still family-friendly movie I reccomend Fluke (1995). Technically clean, but filled with a lot of sad dark moments, too and ends up ultimately bittersweet. I've never heard anyone else talk about this movie, much less react to it in a video. It deserves some attention.

Yeah, All Dogs Go to Heaven was at a weird transitional period between the great Don Bluth movies of the 80s (Secret of NIMH, American Tail, and Land Before Time) and the...not-so-great movies of the early 90s (Rock-a-Doodle, Pebble and the Penguin, Thumbelina, and Troll in Central Park). This one is either divisive or a mixed bag depending on who you ask. Definitely all over the place. Thank goodness Anastasia was a success. Lol
Don Bluth made great animated films that deal in dark real subjects and, poor Judith Barsi she was a sweet child who never lived a full life, thanks to her bad dad, and she and Heather O'Rourke who played Carol Anne from Poltergeist were 2 angels gone too soon!
So, it was originally supposed to be a real Tommy g*n, and the apple pieces were supposed to be bl**d, but it unfortunately got censored.
Also, the H*ll sequence was supposed to be longer and way scarier, but it also got edited.
Man, it hurts to think so much of Don Bluth's work was butchered, and what was taken out or changed is lost forever.

I watched this for the first time last year & I have to say Charlie's goodbye to Anne-Marie really struck a chord because it reminded me of the time after my own dog passed away.
That last goodbye were the last words little Judith Barsi ever recorded, her final acting moments
Bro I know this movie by HEART heart. And I cry every time (now that I know what happened to Judith) but anyways as a kid I sing every song.. knew allll the words. And it's just nostalgia for me. It's very cool seeing a younger generation appreciate one of my childhood movies. But anyhoo let me continue crying.

There are a few other films with these characters: one is a direct sequel (which I liked better than the first film) and a Christmas film (which is my favorite of all of them).
Look up the murder of Judith Barsi, there is actually a really sad story, especially the part where she tried to sing the song.

All Dogs Go To Heaven and All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 The Land Before Time and The Land Before Time sequels are my favorite Don Bluth movies.
I watched this movie when I was 4 or something, never forgot the feeling that punching my stomach and the teardrops of course.
People and Animals are complex, some are good, many are bad but a lot are flawed characters, and Charlie is one of them and glad Don made him like that and kudos to Burt Reynolds, and his friendship with Dom Deluise! The songs were ok but the best is Let Me Be Surprised, we need more films like this today to teach kids about things that are out there rather then shutting them in and trying to deny all the bad stuff of the world!

I watched this as a kind but I was never as attached to it as other movies. It's just. Eh.
It's not an old movie, but I recommend the Wolf Children. It's about an animated movie about a woman raising two children on her own. It's very touching and really captures the bittersweet emotions of a lot of the hardships people go through in life, while also beautifully highlighting the happy parts.

Before the Season 2 finale of The Owl House made me cry, THIS WAS THE VICTIM OF EMOTIONAL DAMAGE FOR ME!
They had a different girl do the singing for Anne Marie because every time Judith Barsi attempted to she would just burst into tears and Don Bluth just didn't have the heart to force her to sing it.
Oof, talk about unlocking a childhood memory. I was terrified of the devil/nightmare scene. Gave me nightmares of my own. Couldn't watch that piece again for years after.

I don't think that this movie was ever supposed to be all that sad. It was supposed to be a redemption story, a simple sinner turned saint sort of thing. All the behind the scenes was just sad and tragic.

Oh the title sounds sad, does it? I would consider "All Dogs" less of a sad thing and more of a morbid-crackden-spook thing.
If you want to go in a more somber direction, I can recommend "Watership Down". It doesn't have as many straight-up crying moments as anything from Pixar, but it does have an effectively depressing atmosphere.
this was a STAPLE in my childhood movie library. I'm 36yrs old and to this day...I can't stop the tears when Charlie and Anne Marie say goodbye.
When the 2nd movie came out...I kinda thought it would have been interesting if the deceased mom of the little boy turned out to BE Anne Marie in the 1st place...or maybe the grandmother of the boys mom.
When I learned what happened to Judith Barsi, I cannot watch the ending because it made it much sadder. Now it is said that her house is supposedly haunted.
If someone hasn’t before I’ll make that ending scene a lot sadder. By the time Judith was killed she had already finished her lines but Burt hadn’t yet. So he asked that the entire crew with the exception of an audio engineer be absent when he recorded those lines because in real life it was him saying goodbye to Judith while their characters were saying goodbye in the film. And the song that followed during the credits was a song called love survives that was written in memory of Judith.
Rest In Peace, Judith Barsi. This world was too cruel for you.

The Movie is much more sadder when you realize the VA for Anne Marie was killed by her own father before the movies release. It's honestly heartbreaking. And the song in the credits makes me tear up.
