Omg Marie was the voice of Ducky!! I had watched this a very long time ago and I didn't even realize.
Judith was such a talented little girl. She had the cutest voice and I'm glad that her legacy lives on.
Also, for some reason the character looks like a miniature version of Snow White

I had a hard time thinking back to this film, mostly because it was revealed that Judith Barsi had a serious meltdown while recording her song for the film, a song reflecting on her character's desire for a loving family. Sad this was her last film and released posthumously.

Hey I have been watching your work for a while, but I wanted to tell you this fun fact about Anna Marie’s design. That it was supposed to look like her voice actor. When Don herd about her death he was apparently so sad about it, and a way to coop with the lose of Judith designed Anna to look like her. Also I think it was a way to honor her, may she Rest In Peace.

I remember watching All Dogs Go to Heaven back when I was in daycare. The thing I definitely liked about the movie, and still do, was how they incorporated makeshift construction(i.e. using an old abandoned car as a bar). I always had a love for that sort of stuff and I think this movie is what made me love it.

I still like All Dogs go to Heaven, despite its flaws. However, I would definitely not say that the movie was Bluth's fall for grace. I would argue that Thumbelina, Rockadoodle, Pebble and the Penguin, and Troll and the Central Park were Don Bluth's fall. Compare All Dogs go to Heaven being looked at fairly fondly today, vs something like Troll in the Central Park and how much it gets panned. Or compare the growth Charlie gets in All Dogs go to Heaven, vs. the paper thin antagonist of Pebble and the Penguin. The difference is night and day.

    • @thedukeofchutney468

I’d argue that “All Dogs go to Heaven” was the fall and the others were the impact. The Little Mermaid came out the same year crushing this and officially kickstarting the Disney renaissance. So I think describing this as the “fall” is apt as it’s the beginning of the end.

Don Bluth's fall from grace started when studios started meddling in his films and expecting him to do everything they wanted even when the studios had no idea what they wanted. The Pebble and the Penguin is a prime example.

Ok, so maybe "All Dogs go to Heaven" was not one of Don Bluth's most perfect movies, but I like how they made a song in honor of Judith Barsi, the voice of Anne Marie. "Love Survives".

Judith Barsi was one of those great performers who, from such a young age, easily outperformed any any adult-playing-a-child-out-of-ease-for-production. Though there's exceptions, I love Bluth's choice to have child actors for most (all?) of his child roles. They feel so natural, & Judith was a major standout among them. That poor girl deserved the world, & she deserved to keep changing the world with all the heart & talent she wanted.

13:30 - Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but I always thought Charlie running Carface's place out of business by way of making his own _better_ casino (and thus stealing all of Carface's customers) _was_ supposed to be the "revenge", but _then_ Charlie just lost track of that plan as he got more and more wrapped up in his own success (since letting his greed and pride cloud his judgement is shown to be one of Charlie's most consistent flaws throughout ADGTH.)

    • @AuroraDragoness
      @AuroraDragoness Год назад +2

      On point.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 4 месяца назад

Except this is rebuked by two things:
      1. The fact that the creators choose to have him place his name all over the new casino. This feels like a very dumb way to have Carface realize that he's still alive and took Anne-Marie.
      2. The revenge part gets no mention in the 2nd half of the movie. I rewatch the movie several times and I don't think Charlie or Itchy bring up getting back at Carface in the 2nd half of the movie.
So I feel like there a right way to re-write this scene instead so we can see what Charlie's revenge is.
Charlie's plan for revenge is to blow the casino boat, and have Carface watch everything he built be destroyed, and have him get killed in the explosion (Charlie: He's gonna watch everything he's got disappear. And I'll make sure it's the last thing he sees.). However, Charlie needs money in order to get the ammo and explosives he needs to blow up the boat. So that's when he decides to use Anne Marie so they can have her talk to animals and place bets on the winners. And with their money, they buy their ammo, and secretly stick them onto the boat so when the time is right, they blow it up. But during one of their bets, a dog who happens to work for Carface, notices Charlie in the audience and goes to tell Carface, especially since word has been going around about someone making very high winnings on animal competitions.
With this revenge it would lead to much more set-up and payoff. As when Charlie confronts Carface, in an attempt to rescue Anne-Marie, their fight accidently causes a fire. Charlie realizing the explosives are still on the boat, has to get Anne-Marie out fast. He ends up sacrificing his watch to save her, and dies in the explosion.
After that, you can keep most of the story and ending the same.

@@osmanyousif7849 Okay, I started off confused with your odd use of "rebuffed" and then my confusion only got worse from there, so I'm going to *try* and make sense of what it seems you're trying to say.
      1. The whole reason he puts his name all over his new casino is BECAUSE he wants Carface to find out who's rapidly putting him out of business (and also a little bit to stroke his own ego). If you listen to his interactions with Itchy throughout the planning stages, Itchy is almost CONSTANTLY trying to convince Charlie to just leave town and make a fresh start elsewhere, and Charlie flat-out REFUSES to do so.
Now, would this objectively be a really dumb move on one someone's part in real life? ABSOLUTELY! In the real world, if a person a seedy casino owner THOUGHT they'd killed turned up alive and started doing HALF the things Charlie pulled post-Heaven, they'd get found out and gunned down on the spot!
That sad, Is it a dumb move on the writers' and animators' parts? NO! The whole point of it is to show the audience that Charlie is still letting his own ego and selfishness steer his judgment by this point in the film, especially now that he's basically immortal as long as he keeps winding his watch! The pseudo-immortality is making him reckless, and putting his name up in lights is a quick-and-easy way to show it.
      2. The revenge gets no mention in the second half because by that point the revenge has been achieved already as we see with the ABSOLUTELY THRIVING casino. Why would anyone continue discussing plans for a task they've already completed?
Unless you're referring to when Carface burns down Charlie's casino and kidnaps Anne-Marie, but by that point Charlie has gone through his character development and become a better person who prioritizes protecting his loved ones over revenge, making it a moot point either way.
Sorry for the lengthy reply, I usually try to avoid those. I genuinely am just trying to make sense of everything you said!

    • @osmanyousif7849

@@submariNervous , my apologies. I meant to say rebuke as apparently in the dictionary it was the closest thing I could find to award that meant, getting “cast aside”. which I was trying to say how the statement you made were “cast aside” in the movie, but was trying to use shorter words. But the voice typing is very weak on here.
The bottom line is, I still stand by what I say, because, in hindsight, I do think that as much as they wanted to establish how Charlie’s greed and ego is getting in the way, it does feel like a very dumb way to go about it. Especially, as I mentioned before, the inclusion of the casino is how kface finds out that Charlie is alive and has Anne-Marie. I thought, my rewrite of this scene was a way to fix this issue, since Charlie would be obsessed more with making Carface suffers just like he did.
I mean, if they really want to have the casino plot point, then have Charlie still keep a low profile and not put his name all over the front of it. Therefore, nobody has a clue yet to who owes this business yet, leading to Carface to have to do some detective work to figure out who is this mysterious new owner is.

and if you go back to the pound scene you notice those are also lasers. so i'm pretty sure all guns got changed.

Charlie never really redeems himself until the last second. Up until the climax he's consistently using and lying to Annemarie, even so much so as guilting her to stay with him after she has breakfast with her soon-to-be-adopted parents. Which, yeah, were it not for him she would've been adopted right then. Whether or not he enjoys his time with her is irrelevant tbh. He's still a major ass and treats everyone around him like shit, and any apologies he offers feel extremely forced.
I have reservations about his "sacrifice" because of the way the scene is handled. He can't save both his watch and Anne, so he's given a choice. He saves Anne, and that's fine. But *immediately after* he makes a mad dive for the watch. He fails, sure, but it would have been much more noble if he forsook the watch entirely and hung onto Anne as she washed away on the driftwood. It feels like his priorities were unchanged, and he ultimately died thinking about himself.
I do agree that they should've put more emphasis on his and Carface's relationship. Maybe even fully explore why he was sent to the pound while we're at it. To me, the story felt like one confusing mess, and as you noted, Charlie seeking revenge, but then not seeking it, and the film not properly giving Carface any real exposure just makes it feel very rushed.

The problem was Don Bluth wanted to have Disney's success but chose ideas and concepts that didn't work in a musical format or didn't click with the same originality or storytelling that Disney could pull off. As much shit as Disney gets (a lot of it justified), they understood their stories and translated that into animation flawlessly, including the movies that they made an adaptation of or made a certain interpretation of which wasn't meant to be completely accurate given stories they chose like Hercules had very dark and disturbing myths that they didn't want to introduce young kids to.
All Dogs Go To Heaven was one of Don's best...but that was against all his other films that weren't great. The only one that was truly a match for Disney that they actually felt threatened by was Anastasia which was the best Don Bluth movie of all. Don Bluth was first and foremost an animator, not a director which is another reason his stories fell apart on the big screen. He never directed an animated movie until he started his own studio which was arguably his mistake.
I respect the guy and he did a lot but it just wasn't up to par with Disney whom he chose to go against. The fact that he's trying again to make his own studio against the now-animation giant Disney, a severe disadvantage than before, is remarkable but foolish. But hey, I could be wrong.

It doesn't make a lot of sense for Anabelle not to know Charlie was going to trick her unless you understand it's meant to be a direct parallel to the fall of man. God is supposed to see and know everything, yet Adam and Eve still eat the forbidden fruit and he doesn't seem to know about it beforehand. The reason all dogs are "naturally" good in the movie and automatically go to heaven is because they never committed the original sin. Charlie's forbidden fruit moment is when he winds the watch and falls from heaven. By giving his life to save Anne Marie, he redeems himself and is allowed back in.
If you want an explanation on a purely technical level, you can freeze the movie at a specific moment and see that there's a picture of a car with the words "The End" in Charlie's book of life. Presumably there's nothing written after it, and heaven just stops recording/predicting things after someone's death. They probably assume no one will or would ever want to leave.

Good review! I'm a fan of this movie, though I completely understand why someone would find this film flawed (yeah, some things have not aged well, but given the film's time period... eh.). If anything, I feel that the story is the film's strongest suit - having a not-so-good main character as the focus of a plot of redemption is an excellent arc, though it does show stupidity in some parts (which is valid - old habits die hard, clearly). Also, Anne-Marie makes for a great kid character, though I agree the whole "speaking to animals" thing is very strange, but alas, anything can happen in animation... and she is the McGuffin orphan girl that both the protag & villain want for their own personal reasons, so... yeah. I will say that I feel it's Judith Barsi's best role, as she sounds the most sweet & genuine here than in LBT as Ducky; that last scene with Charlie hits like a gut punch EVERY TIME though... 😭
At least the most interesting thing about ADGTH is the fact that Charlie is an unlikable protagonist who gets what's coming to him but eventually redeems himself via self-sacrifice after revenge ends up doing more harm than good for him & those he cares about. Movies like this for children are probably not something many parents would want their children to watch - a bad role model that is the main character - and honestly? I really doubt ADGTH would've been made today. However, the lessons that Charlie learns are important - you have only one life & while the riches & success are nice to have, the love & care of friends & others are worth so much more. I'm glad that his ending here was bittersweet & that his death IS the happy ending. He accepts his redemption pass from hell & goes to the heavens knowing that his loved ones will be fine without him.
And then the sequel happens... but I'll wait until you review that before I say anything else)
Also, I just realized... The main thing that REALLY SUCKS is that the title literally means that even though Charlie (as well as Carface) is an asshole, even HE gets a "go to heaven" pass just because they're dogs & "unlike humans, dogs are loyal & kind"... while people have to earn that right the hard way through being good ALL THE TIME. That is such BS... but I get it - kids movie - but that's a weird thing to teach to kids when the main character is a dog... that defies the laws of dogs going to heaven, condemns himself to hell, and still gets redeemed to go to heaven for being the ultimate good boy. (So wait... was his journey like that of a human's trial to eventually make it to heaven then?)
This leaves me with way more questions...

I'm not sure if it was in Bluth's original cut, but the biggest issue with this movie for me (despite enjoying it as a kid) is how it changed tones and storylines halfway through. The first half as some have noted is when Charlie is brought back to life and begins planning revenge on Carface. Yet this gets completely ignored in the 2nd half as Charlie chooses to build a casino... WITH HIS NAME ALL OVER IT. Why does he do this? Isn't Charlie suppose to be keeping a low profile, since Carface thinks he's dead? I get that they wanted him to find out, but this is really a dumb way to go about it. And it completely forgets about what should have been the main focus which is Charlie wanting Carface to pay for what he did to him. So if I was to fix this movie, I'd remove the casino plotline. The 1st act will stay, as well as the half of the 2nd act, where Charlie and Itchy "rescue" Anne-Marie when they learn what Carface is using her for, Carface realizing Anne-Marie's gone and the whole bedtime sequence. Now for the next part of the act's focus: creating Charlie's revenge.
Charlie's plan for revenge is to blow the casino boat, and have Carface watch everything he built be destroyed, and have him get killed in the explosion (Charlie: He's gonna watch everything he's got disappear. And I'll make sure it's the last thing he sees.). Once they do, Charlie has a getaway plan as well (which I explain more in detail soon), and him and Itchy will make their escape. However, Charlie needs money in order to get the ammo and explosives he needs to blow up the boat and for their ride out of New Orleans. So that's when he decides to use Anne Marie so they can have her talk to animals and place bets on the winners. And with their money, they buy their ammo, and secretly stick them onto the boat so when the time is right, they blow it up. But during one of their bets, a dog who happens to work for Carface, notices Charlie in the audience and goes to tell Carface (And we can have that scene where Carface attempts to murder Killer and Killer states he has a gun; but not a "ray gun.).
We can still keep the "Anne-Marie looking for a family" subplot, but here's what'll happen: during their planning Anne-Marie wants out because of Charlie not keeping the end of his promise to help the poor and find her a family. So that's when they go to the abandoned church where Flo raises the orphaned puppies and feed them. Here we get more development with Flo where not only is she a former girlfriend of Charlie, but has some business in laundering money and goods and smuggling pets out of the town. Charlie makes a deal with her into helping him and Itchy get on a plane out of the city, but doesn't mention his plans for revenge on Carface to her.
We keep the sequence of Anne-Marie finding the stolen wallet of Harold and Kate, the "Soon You'll Come Home" song, Charlie's Hell nightmare (fully restored), Anne-Marie's visit to Kate and Harold, Charlie manipulating Anne-Marie into coming back with him, the Carface shooting (fully restored; the original scene was meant to be more violent), and here we see more elements to his watch where it basically shows that it gives Charlie immorality and healing powers, unless something happens to the watch (like it stops ticking). We have the whole scene with Charlie and Anne-Marie falling into the water in that abandoned building, but remove the entire alligator sequence (Seriously, why was that even in there?). Instead, we have them falling through the sewers trying to find their way out, only to head down a waterfall, leading to Anne-Marie contracting pneumonia.
Itchy in the meantime is walking down the street with some more supplies for the revenge plan, only to get attacked by Carface and his thugs but manages to escape despite receiving some bruises. We have Charlie trying to find medical attention for Anne-Marie with Flo and Itchy confronting Charlie there, Charlie in anger states that he's using Anne-Marie and plans "dump her in an orphanage", Ann-Marie hearing everything and running away tearfully, and here we are shown that Carface managed to follow Itchy to the abandoned church, where him and his thugs hide from behind and kidnap Anne-Marie, and Itchy realizes that it's them, not Charlie. Charlie then decides that's he has to for once try and fight for someone other than himself and goes to save Anne-Marie, even convincing Itchy into doing so (Since Itchy states earlier that he believes Charlie treats Anne-Marie like she matters more than him.).
Charlie and Itchy then go on their rescue with Charlie attempting to get Anne-Marie out, but is confronted by Carface once more and a fight ensues but accidently causes a fire. Charlie realizing the explosives are still on the boat, has to get Anne-Marie out fast. Carface's death can be the same, except instead of the comedic alligator, Carface is confront by real scary and well drawn ones (Kinda similar to the designs of the T-Rex, in Bluth's previous film The Land Before Time.). Charlie ending up sacrificing his watch to save Anne-Marie, and dying in the explosion (Also, remove Killer helping Anne-Marie to shore and have him get his comeuppance as well, since we are shown in the film that he's still evil, so him saving her feels unearned.). And then we have the emotional ending where Itchy, decides to stay with Anne-Marie, as it would be what Charlie wanted, Charlie being forgiven, and given the chance back to Heaven, his final goodbye to Anne-Marie and returning to Heaven.
And just like that, you have the perfect All Dogs Go To Heaven movie.

It wasn't until much later into adulthood that I realized part of why I loved the character so much was because King Gator was one of the few non-binary and openly queer representations there was in a time when that was still a VERY deadly thing to be. I have old physical injuries that give me trouble today in my mid-40's. I'm honestly surprised they even let the King Gator song stay in the film.
To a little 11 year old non-binary queer kid suffering in silence and terror with who they were at the time, that was HUGE.
It also started my life-long fan-nerding over the LEGENDARY Ken Page (also the voice of Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas).

Agree with a lot of what you had to say here,
Some bullet points about the movie for me:
-Charlie and Itchy’s banters are entertaining at times
-Voice acting is pretty good, love how Burt can make Charlie sound real dirty with that laugh of his, its an unhealthy, awkward wheeze and I really enjoy it
And Cmon, Judith Barsi is gold in this, just like you said
-Despise the sharing song (and sorta space out around the first time he goes to heaven) but I love the dynamic of Charlie and Flo, yknow, dirty slicker and poor single mom?
    -Hell scene is brilliant.
-Charlie crying on Anne Marie’s bed really grabs the heart strings
I think there is thoughtfulness behind the writing, but I had no idea that Bluth actually split from Spielberg. So I can see where there’s a bit of unsteadiness with this group.
I still enjoy the movie. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, ultimately making the end more impactful, to me at least.

I love the very mature scenes like hell and Charlie’s goodbye but the annoying scenes like the sharing song and King Gator were major turn offs for me though I think the weirdest part is that they didn’t animate the scene where Charlie gets hit by the car, it looks so weird when viewing it years later. I still think this movie is worth a watch for many scenes but honestly it’s not as good as I remember it or as good as the land before time which I loved as a kid.

Disney somehow made a comeback in success by adapting a musical fairytale reimagining of Hans Cristian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, long before Frozen. However, I use find the animism in All Dogs go to Heaven quite interesting with the idea of animals having a soul or spirit, which has been told in various mythologies long before this one existed. By the way, thanks for the rant, I really need it, perhaps I was a fool for liking the directing of this film, but the concept was something that is worth rebooting.

Uh maybe Annabelle knew what Charlie was doing all the time...because of what she told him right when they first met?

I think it symbolizes why both was so successful,in the 80’s and then crashed and burned in the 90’s. The a I still was always top notch, great music and four star voice acting-but he just had this weird attraction to uneven, over complicated scripts, though studio interference probably played a part. But above all, at one time he had no competition so his work stood on top by default, once the other studios took an interest in animation it really made how strange his work was stand out.

There should’ve been mention of King Gator before hand, maybe Carface or Killer could’ve used it to scare Annmarie into not running away

I’m wondering what you would think of this movie and it’s sequel if you had seen them as a kid because for me the all dogs go to heaven movies, the first land before time and Anastasia were among my most watched beloved movies as a child and I watched them more than even some of the peak Disney movies of the time. I only had good memories of them as a kid, I probably would feel different about the quality as an adult but hell if knew that as a child
