Although I can see why people consider this Don's magnum opus, I have a much closer relationship with his other films such as The Land before Time and All dogs go to heaven, I noticed that a lot of people hate Jeremy but I think he was better Incorporated in the original book, one thing I love about the movie is the soundtrack because the background score fits perfectly with the scenes they're in ❤️🔥🔥🔥

I think everything about The Secret of NIMH is wonderful (except for the sequel), but yeah, while NIMH is Don Bluth’s magnum opus, the rest of the 1980s Don Bluth films like An American Tail (1986), All Dogs Go to Heaven 1 and The Land Before Time (1988) were also Bluth’s best films! Titan AE and Anastasia (1997) come close too, and I can’t wait for when he gets back in the animation industry with his new studio! www.cartoonbrew.com/studios/don-bluth-launches-new-studio-to-usher-in-renaissance-of-hand-drawn-animation-196399.html

I defend annoying and unlikeable characters with this observation: Real life is full of annoying and unlikeable people who are always getting in your way. We all know someone like Jeremy, and if you have children, you will understand the mouse children's purpose, and why they are written as they are.
Also, guns are very noisy and sure to attract the farmer's attention.

But, in Jenner’s defense, we did kind of see him evolve at the end. Or rather, de-evolve into more savage than civilized. This can be noted by not only how his sword is more crooked than Justin’s.
Other than that, yeah, Jenner is basically just a pure black villain that, while cool, could’ve been made more complex, sympathetic even. But then again, my favorite Bluth villain is the one that doesn’t even talk

Since it’s declared the perfect animated movie of all time both animation-wise and story-wise, I always beat myself up for my work not coming close to this and not being perfect like this movie is. But your points help me see that even the most “perfect” movies have flaws.

If I can think of a defense for how Jenner was (poorly) written, he could be an example of politicians who have lofty, logical ideas - but really they are just a cover for petty, selfish ambition and a desire for complacency. Think how many times you've heard a politician put a good and positive spin on their political goals, but really you know they are out for their own interests.
That way Jenner can make a good arguement for not leaving the farm, but really it's a cover for his petty, greedy desire to take what he can, when he can. A cover he drops once it fails to work and Nicodemus' death only escalates things.

The only explanation for why there's magic in this version of the story is the same Doug gave to his analysis. It represents the unknown that we yet to understand, just like how when the rats were just lab rats, stuff like science and written language were foreign concepts.

I think there is a bit more to the conflict between the two factions of rats than just evolving to a better society. Specifically one the main issues that Nicodemus faction has w/ sticking around the farm is that they are "stealing" electricity from the farmer. And that stealing is inherently wrong, even if the the individual they are stealing from would probably kill them all if given the chance. Jenner on the other hand argues that moral considerations are irrelevant, and that they should just take what they need. Even going so far as to insinuate they should kill the farmer if given the chance. So in that vein, I think the line to "take what you can, when you can" to be perfectly in line w/ his character and political position.

Awesome video dude! Love hearing your perspectives!
I will respectfully say, you may not have liked Jeremy, but my family and I sure did! We were cracking up every time he was on screen and without him, the movie would have just been way too dark.
Also, that kind of clumsy, squirrel-brain character really resonated with me a lot as a kid because it showed me that even if you aren't perfect, and make mistakes, you can still be important and help out. Very important lesson for a kid who was unaware that they were growing up with ADHD.
I really wish that Jeremy had been able to help save the kids at the very end because that would have given his character a really good heroic moment, cementing his place as a family friend.
Also, I agree with many of your points on Jenner, but I can tell you why he snapped, Mrs. Brisby challenged his authority by trying to save the others.
Jenner wasn't interested in the welfare of the other rats, he wanted power and control. His role as a political villain shows, that he has not embraced the ideal of being better than a rat the way the others have. After killing Nicodemus, he convinces the entire group to abandon the journey and go home, he had all the power in his pocket, he was finally in control. Yes this is a different perspective, but he wasn't interested in the other's safety, otherwise he would have seen the danger in staying at the farm when Mrs. Brisby tried to warn them about NIMH.
Mrs. Brisby was the variable Jenner hadn't counted on. When she discovered that it was no longer safe to stay at the farm and tried to warn the others to leave, that fear destroyed Jenner's plan entirely and wrenched away his control. That was what made him lose his temper and attack her.
Still, you did a great job with the video. Love hearing people talk about such great movies! You've earned my sub. 😊

His magnus opus is actually land before time (and it’s the one that’s become heavily franchised). Though American tail is definitely a close second with it on the record of out competing tge great mouse detective.

As a kid I just found the movie kind of terrifying. The cat is scary, Nicodemus is scary, Genner is kind of Ratigan scary, the owl, the tractor, that guy who guards the rat's city is ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. Except for Nicodemus if they're not trying to straight up murder our main character it is heavily implied they could. Rewatching it I noted that I surprisingly remembered everything the only thing I didn't remember was that you have to go through a boring Jeremy scene between each memorable scene. While the themes are deep I didn't get much out of it as an adult. I think its best quality in the end is that... It is scary, death is always around the corner and comes in many many forms and the pacing makes you anxious. The movie throw just so much sh*t at the main character it just feels good to be able to breathe when it's finally over, I didn't even care about the magic, I thought it was weird sure but that poor mouse has been through so much it's just a visually beautiful scene that set her and the audience free, at last.

You could call the kids annoying and I agree. However you could make a slim argument that they are not annoying enough to hurt the movie and that there is one moment in the movie where the kids show concern and worrisome for their little brother who was sick. Something you would NEVER see in an animated movie nowadays.

It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, but in my opinion, the magic is the biggest problem with the movie. It does more than just undermine the scientific elements - it begs the question why the rats needed science at all. As we saw, Nicodemus had a magic stone that could levitate the Brisbys’ stone block home. Yet the rats were using a pulley system. Sure, the stone could only be used by someone with “courage of the heart”, but you’re telling me none of the rats had that?
There’s also the issue that having magic meant the rats had evolved not just beyond regular animals, but beyond humans as well. They could have significant power over society. Yet if I remember correctly, that didn’t factor into their conversations about Thorn Valley. All they were worried about was the fact they were stealing resources from humans. But if they had magic, they didn’t need to steal resources from humans!
Now, I know Nicodemus was the only one with magic powers, but why weren’t any of the rats - like Jenner, for example - interested in that instead? Also, where did the stone come from? Were there more?
Also, also…did NIMH give them Nicodemus the ability to use magic?! Comprehending human speech is one thing, but having magical abilities, something humans don’t even have - that has so many weird implications.
There was just no need to add magic to what was otherwise a simple story about anthropomorphic animals. Is the movie still great? Yes, but not as an adaptation of that particular book.

Actually, Jenner survived. Robert C. O'Brien's daughter wrote a sequel about Jenner's son, Racso, journeying to Thorn Valley to get an education. He tells Nicodemus the tragic tale of his father's survival, but with scars from the accident. He's become more of a tragic victim, who ha become fearful of his super intelligence. It's a decent book, and the true sequel rather than Timmy to The Rescue.

I don’t think Secret of NIMH is as strong script-wise as people give it credit for. The music and visuals do all the heavy lifting. A lot of the dialogue is clunky and redundant, but that’s not my main issue.
Mrs Brisby has little agency after the first act. She has to go to three different old guys to tell her what to do. All she gets to be is a Concerned Mother™️ and the widow of the great Johnathan Brisby. We don’t even get her first name! Imma be real with you, Nicodemus, I do not care about how cool her dead husband was. And what, she holds a rock and faints while the men duke it out? It is lame, it is so lame. Btw take a drink every time she flutters her eyelashes.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about Jeremy. He acts like a sexist jerk, he probably could have lifted the house at any time or at least suggested it, and then at the end he’s rewarded with a girlfriend despite not learning squat about not being a sexist jerk.
I think you can tell I didn’t grow up with this one.

Jeremy is a much pleasant character than most of the sidekicks from the Disney renaissance did you saw the mooses from brother bear or le fou or the gargoyles from the hunchback of notre dame ? Come on guy, jeremy had more interest and appeal than them, and I don't even talk about Cgi shits like olaf and the followings digital characters they created. Jenner too is a much better vilain than, let say... The ones from pocahontas, atlantis or the princess and the frog. His acting and importance are just as good as was Scar in the lion king. The real weakness of the secret of nihm lies in the magical amulet which is a non sence according to the " realistic " tone of the entiere movie. Your analysis is only based on your feeling ( mine too ) but you have to reconnize that those characters have a better animation than usual Disney characters and their introduction into the story doesn't relies on cheap tricks we see films after films, particulary on Disney and Dreamworks movies. Bluth isn't really a good screen writer but ,in adaptating the secret of nihm, he did his best and succeded at 90%.
