@@SonicaKuroiTenshi yes but that’s only the beginning. Apparently Atlantis reached its height more that 90,000 years ago far older than the type of French Milo or Mole was speaking. Romance languages like French and Latin are relatively new in comparison to Atlantean. The "Sequel" this film got was actually a pilot for a canceled TV Show "Team Atlantis" and was 3 episodes edited together. It would have been amazing to see a Theatrical Sequel, a TV Show, and yes, they planned rides at both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. Why can't we live in a world where those are reality?
This is my FAVORITE non-princess Disney movie of all time, hands down. It really spoke to little kid me, who was a big on fantasy/history. I even had a McDonalds toy of the crystal necklace from this movie
I mean, YES, but also I'm bothered by the fact that she's not considered a disney princess. Whenever someone asks me who my favorite princess is I say Kida😂
In your defense of mixing up Atlantis and Treasure Planet, they were both made by the same guy, Tab Murphy. Most if not all of the great, horribly underrated Disney films are thanks to Tab Murphy and his creative mind c:
The part that her mom says at the beginning is something along the lines of "leave it [the bracelet] behind, there's no time!" Not sure why that wasn't translated in the version you watched, but it was always available in the VHS that I watched as a kid!
Sophia: I did the same thing with Atlantis and Treasure Planet Me: more like Road to El dorado Also Sophia: this whole movie gives me whole El dorado vibes
Loved this. I feel like this would be one of the best animated Disney's that would actually translate well to a live action. Also thank you!! I never noticed the PT Barnum comment! I wonder if he was referring to PT Barnum's famous "There's a sucker born ever minute" because of the crew turning on him
Especially because the main reason it's so underrated is because Disney sabotaged its release in order to have an excuse to stop using Deep Canvas tech and transition away from 2D animation into 3D/cgi.
5:43 Common human/character body languge: When someone doesn't show you their hands, they've got something to hide, like secrets or something. Villains often cross their arms, wear gloves (like Prince Hans in Frozen,) or like this guy, hold them behind their back or in their pockets.
Reasons why this movie is amazing on top of the regular reasons (tight script, great banter, beautiful animation, etc.): - Milo as a nerdy "science hero", a soft nerdy man who's an idealist and motivated by a pure pursuit of knowledge, and his physical weakness isn't shown as something shameful or unmanly or something he needs to overcome by the end. - Even though he's shown as idealistic, we're reminded that scientific advancement doesn't exist in a vacuum and in his work, Milo is naively reaping the fruits of suffering and conquest. As Rourke points out, the Altanteans' treasure would be far from the first thing to make it into museums against the will of the original owners. - Rather than black and white characterisation, the cast exists on a spectrum from "good person who cares about other people" (Milo, Dr. Sweet) to "your average person who knows what's right but may struggle with doing it" (Audrey and the others), to "knows what's right but will do the wrong thing for other reasons like loyalty or self-interest" (Helga, with her little line "This changes everything" before Rourke shoots that down), to "gives zero shits about doing the wrong thing and will not feel bad about it" (Rourke) - Disney needs to revive the tradition of "conquest-hungry immoral military man as the ultimate bad guy" (Altantis, Tarzan), if they're not too busy sucking up to the Pentagon these days when writing the MCU.
Cookie's line near the end saying that he wasn't so good at “speechifying” was the only dialogue line of his that was done by someone other than Jim Varney, who had died of lung cancer aged just 50 before the film was completed. Presumably that line was added much later in the production, when Jim was either too ill to record the line himself, or was no longer with us by the time the decision was made to add it. _Atlantis: The Lost Empire_ is dedicated to his memory and Cookie was his last role.
I always thought this movie and Avatar (with the blue people) had a lot of similarities. Like, their plots are almost exactly the same. Also, you posting this totally made my day! Please keep making this content!
I read online that people thought the same thing with Pocahontas! I guess people trying to steal resources from people in native lands is a common plot 💀
8:40 - 9:0410:24 - 10:35 Fun fact: Don Novello, who plays Vinny, chose to improv his dialogue. One of the animators even stated that he would read his line once or twice, but not even say them through the scenes. Makes me wonder what his original lines were.....
to be fair, i think they started off wanting to show Atlantis more in-depth before it cut to the "present" and Milo, but figured that would kinda ruin the spectacle of actually finding it. They also had an alternate intro where Icelandic vikings trying to find Atlantis get heckin' nuked by the Leviathan, leaving the Journal, but they decided to instead show how Atlantis sank into the ocean so that you get a taste of the city and culture before the movie _i think_ Also that montage of them going through like the centipede and the cold and the caves, that was supposed to be wayyyyy longer.
Fun thought, the giant lobster that attacked the sub, the Leviathan? There is no one in it, the machine is completely autonomous and as long as it has standing orders to follow. It was about ~380 feet long and could also fly like Atlantean vehicles
5:53 It's Rourke! He's the Admiral Zhao of the group! (In the scene he tries to take a power greater than imagined away from tribal people and it ends up destroying him, lol) 12:15 Just love how you're able to read people :D Kind of reminds me of when you knew that Sokka was holding back from kissing Suki because he was still broken from the lost of Yue :) 14:58 Of course he was off by 10 states, it's 1914, so we already had Arizona as a state at this point, it became a state Feb 14, 1912 . . . and exactly two months later a very romantic night turns into night of disaster :3 I'm pretty good with history. **Finger guns** :3 . . . XD 18:13 It's everything you ever want! It's everything you ever need! And it's here right in front of you! This is where you wanna be! :D 18:34 True about them needing to go up to the surface, but I think he's talking about Milo hitting his lowest point, things can only improve from there :) Kind of reminds me what Iroh said to Zuko :D "You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road, and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." :)
im so glad i got to see this in theaters as a kid. and its always great to see someone watch this movie for the first time, its one of my favorite animated movies. everything about the design of this movie and the great voice acting make it so unique
I just made me aunt watch this yesterday, I've loved it since i saw it when i was a kid-! shame most people haven't seen it. SIDE NOTE so many people die in this movie, I was so surprised because I hadn't really noticed when I was a kid lol
5:40 I’m sorry ma’am, you trying to tell me water isn’t important?... well you’re right I haven’t drank water in over 12- **blacks out for the 3rd time**
The terrifying thing about lobsters is that they cannot die of old age, they just continue shedding their shell and growing until either something eats them or until they become too big to molt out of their shell, if that didn't happen they would just get bigger and bigger continuously
22:07 Fun fact: They are official deleted scenes that showed more scenes of Atlantis and more creatures that were close to the volcano. Also, the intro scene with the city flood, didn't exist at first and there was a scene of vikings trying to get to Atlantis and failing instead. Thank God it didn't happened because we would had to wait half of the movie to meet Kida and the city itself :(
22:00 The reason for that was that originally the film was going to be three films. Part 1 would of covered everything before the trip up to the launch of the sub. Part 2 would of covered the trip itself with part 3 covering them being at Atlantis plus the final fight. Also there was meant to be 2 more underwater sea confrontations.
Atlantis was originally listed as an island, but in the late 19th/early 20th centuries got reimagined as a continent. Incidentally, that was also the era which gave rise to the “super technology” idea. The only super technology Atlantis had was horse drawn chariots and seafaring, and they may have been the first farmers in Europe and the Near East. Other than that…they built in stones of red, white, and black, so…um, I guess?
I saw some other people comment this. Treasure planet is such a great film. I have no idea why it was so unpopular when it came out. For some reason steam punk + space didn’t equal cool to some people. It has remained in my memory so vividly along with Anastasia. The animation and the soundtrack is *chef’s kiss*
Disney DID make a direct to home video sequel called "Atlantis 2: Milo's Return" - it's a little bit contrived and I did think it was setting up a cartoon series but the cartoon series never materialized

It would have been amazing to see a Theatrical Sequel, a TV Show, and yes, they planned rides at both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. Why can't we live in a world where those are reality?
"They're either simping for this man or this woman"
Literally everyone: Both. Both is good.
@@sheaneal290 tbf Kida is a Queen
Based on "Atlantis: The Lost Empire." Watch "Castle in the Sky" and "Stargate (1994)"
YESSS please watch Studio Ghibli movies!!!
I always think of Daniel Jackson whenever I watch Atlantis and see Milo.
@@jdaniel349 Exactly!
This was my favorite Disney movie as a kid and I never got why people didn’t like it. It’s amazing
Same
that hug at the end was so satisfying 🥺 THE HAND ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD ARE YOU KIDDING MEEE
Some people don’t remember this, but there was actually a sequel. It was more of a three part pilot for a series that didn’t launch.
I always get so exited when I get notified by her
Same
Sophia: I did the same thing with Atlantis and Treasure Planet
Me: more like Road to El dorado
Also Sophia: this whole movie gives me whole El dorado vibes
Loved this. I feel like this would be one of the best animated Disney's that would actually translate well to a live action. Also thank you!! I never noticed the PT Barnum comment! I wonder if he was referring to PT Barnum's famous "There's a sucker born ever minute" because of the crew turning on him
DUDE YOU HAVE TO WATCH TREASURE PLANET-
Especially because the main reason it's so underrated is because Disney sabotaged its release in order to have an excuse to stop using Deep Canvas tech and transition away from 2D animation into 3D/cgi.
@@webbmerriam6984 and also because Lilo and Stich was the project they bet on instead
5:43 Common human/character body languge: When someone doesn't show you their hands, they've got something to hide, like secrets or something. Villains often cross their arms, wear gloves (like Prince Hans in Frozen,) or like this guy, hold them behind their back or in their pockets.
I always loved this movie as a child but now I love it even more because Milo is a linguist and so am I. He's kinda like my personal hero.
I'm a simple woman:
I see Atlantis being portrayed in a positive light, I like the content.
I'm over here simpin' Helga. Who's with me?
I love this movie. More people need to see it. Also, Helga survived the fall because the bottom of the volcano was made of ash.
Reasons why this movie is amazing on top of the regular reasons (tight script, great banter, beautiful animation, etc.):
- Milo as a nerdy "science hero", a soft nerdy man who's an idealist and motivated by a pure pursuit of knowledge, and his physical weakness isn't shown as something shameful or unmanly or something he needs to overcome by the end.
Sweet) to "your average person who knows what's right but may struggle with doing it" (Audrey and the others), to "knows what's right but will do the wrong thing for other reasons like loyalty or self-interest" (Helga, with her little line "This changes everything" before Rourke shoots that down), to "gives zero shits about doing the wrong thing and will not feel bad about it" (Rourke)
- Disney needs to revive the tradition of "conquest-hungry immoral military man as the ultimate bad guy" (Altantis, Tarzan), if they're not too busy sucking up to the Pentagon these days when writing the MCU.
@@SophiaPhannn Yes! I also hadn't thought of Road to Eldorado but you're totally right about that too.
I find this significantly better than both movies as all the characters in this series are a bit more nuanced and morally gray
I literally watched this last week and honestly forgot how underrated this film is!
I'm so pissed this didn't get more fame
This should have been in kingdom hearts
8:40 - 9:04 10:24 - 10:35
Fun fact: Don Novello, who plays Vinny, chose to improv his dialogue. One of the animators even stated that he would read his line once or twice, but not even say them through the scenes. Makes me wonder what his original lines were.....
I'm with you on that hug! It's such a great detail, and so full of warmth.
to be fair, i think they started off wanting to show Atlantis more in-depth before it cut to the "present" and Milo, but figured that would kinda ruin the spectacle of actually finding it. They also had an alternate intro where Icelandic vikings trying to find Atlantis get heckin' nuked by the Leviathan, leaving the Journal, but they decided to instead show how Atlantis sank into the ocean so that you get a taste of the city and culture before the movie _i think_
Also that montage of them going through like the centipede and the cold and the caves, that was supposed to be wayyyyy longer.
such an underrated movie
"they're either simping for this man or this woman" *sweats in bisexual*
This is my favorite Disney animated movie.
Too bad it bombed
Fun thought, the giant lobster that attacked the sub, the Leviathan? There is no one in it, the machine is completely autonomous and as long as it has standing orders to follow. It was about ~380 feet long and could also fly like Atlantean vehicles
Another super underrated movie to me is Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron u should do a reaction to it plzzz
Yeeees yes yes yes! Please do!
5:53 It's Rourke! He's the Admiral Zhao of the group! (In the scene he tries to take a power greater than imagined away from tribal people and it ends up destroying him, lol)
12:15 Just love how you're able to read people :D Kind of reminds me of when you knew that Sokka was holding back from kissing Suki because he was still broken from the lost of Yue :)
14:58 Of course he was off by 10 states, it's 1914, so we already had Arizona as a state at this point, it became a state Feb 14, 1912 . . . and exactly two months later a very romantic night turns into night of disaster :3 I'm pretty good with history. **Finger guns** :3 . . . XD
18:13 It's everything you ever want! It's everything you ever need! And it's here right in front of you! This is where you wanna be! :D
18:34 True about them needing to go up to the surface, but I think he's talking about Milo hitting his lowest point, things can only improve from there :) Kind of reminds me what Iroh said to Zuko :D "You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road, and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." :)
I love treasure planet and Atlantis
You should watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I lovvveee that movie
im so glad i got to see this in theaters as a kid. and its always great to see someone watch this movie for the first time, its one of my favorite animated movies. everything about the design of this movie and the great voice acting make it so unique
Was I the only strange child who didn't care about Milo or Kida but had a weird crush on Vinny? 😂 😂
Nah, something about the accent and the dry humor was really appealing. I kinda liked Audrey too
I was sipping for Milo but good lord did I want a bite out of Doctor Sweet, call it Sweet Love 😂😂😂
@@Panseidon I’m pretty sure that was my awakening where I discovered my love for 🍫
You've got to beware the funny ones, because they make you laugh, and laugh, and laugh, and suddenly you're naked.
U should watch Treasure Planet next. That and Atlantis are my favourite Disney films.
P. T. Barnum was credited with coining the phrase "There's a sucker born every minute." Whether he actually did or not is up for debate.
20:37 caught me so by surprise i nearly choked on my coffee 💀 your sense of humor is SO underrated
I just made me aunt watch this yesterday, I've loved it since i saw it when i was a kid-! shame most people haven't seen it. SIDE NOTE so many people die in this movie, I was so surprised because I hadn't really noticed when I was a kid lol
P.S. you're little text edits are KILLING ME-!!!
If you’ve gotten this far into underrated Disney, Treasure Planet is your next stop if you haven’t seen it already. It’s loads of fun
Out of all the Disney movies I’ll say the music score in this movie is my favorite specially when Kida becomes the Crystal
9:31 ”crazy russian hacker be like” lmaoo😂
El Dorado and Atlantis are both legitimately legendary lost cities
For any Stargate fans in the comments, is it just me or does Mile give off major Daniel Jackson vibes? Lol
I saw Daniel in the preview for Stargate and was like "MILO, what are you doing here?"
the fact that you react to underrated movies is amazing!! thank you for the quality content ✨
We NEED more animated characters like Milo here.
"There is a sucker born every minute"
That was the P.T Barnum reference.
He does look like the villain from Tarzan, but not in appearence but in manners. The way he talks and such
Just like how she try to find the bad person
This movie is what inspired me to study to become a linguist. Milo is my hero.
Personally, I love Milo and Kida. I also love their romance, as its slow and realistic. And yes...as a hugger myself...that HUG.
2:18 is exactly why I’m scared of the open water
