“Avalanches hit like concrete, the truth is brutal, not everyone makes it”. My uncle died in an avalanche during a skiing trip with his friends. Just like what happened to the men in this video. It never really registered till I got to the end of the video. It’s a strange and hollow feeling when it’s no longer just a story on RUclips about about other people but something very real that happened to me and my family. RIP uncle David. He was barely 30.
This was a very moving story and it brought tears to my eyes. What a group of quality people. You can tell how much they cared for one another. The man coming back and not letting losing part of his leg stop him is very inspirational. I am very sorry that one man lost his life. This was a truly tragic day.
I'm from Sweden and appreciate your channel that I recently found my way to. THE ANARIS ACCIDENT is the worst mountain accident in Sweden in modern times. 1978 Where nine equipped skiers were surprised by bad weather
Now Blake's wife has no husband and his child has no father. Good job. Reminds me of the Nutty putty incident where the soon to be dad left his pregnant wife as he explored the cave, then he died. I feel bad for these women who keep getting left behind. Great narration as usual. I love your videos. I'm really happy to hear the others survived, especially Sam who went on to go such great things.
This story reminds me of the New Zealander Rob Hall who died on Everest in 1995. He lost his life along with another guide and 2 clients. His wife was back in NZ expecting their first child. His story was made into a movie called Everest.
There is a lot more to that story then that people died. And there were four lost from Rob’s group (Rob, Yasuko, Doug, and Andy) plus Scott, the leader of Mountain Madness. Those five were from those two groups, but others also died that day in that storm. There are some credible books about the disaster, but Into Thin Air is not one of them. The movies made rarely follow the truth in total.
They have a device on ski jackets that send off your signal. In addition I heard of ski jackets that have a hood to help you breath if buried. Was part of a ski accident and a girl in s group with a pink jacket had both. They saved her life.
While I can't say I enjoy these videos, I appreciate them. I learn or relearn something from every single one. I've spent a fair amount of time in the wilderness, both solo and with a small group and so much of what you illustrate is something I've either experienced or encountered. I've seen a lot of foolish behavior out in the boonies and channels like yours might actually save someone's life. I appreciated how well you told this particular story. Those avalanches are spectacular to watch but devastating to anything and anyone in their path. At least this party was well-schooled in the outdoors and knew better than most how to deal with the aftermath of the avalanche. Even though I knew the outcome of this particular incident because I live not too far from where it happened, I still was hoping. Glad that all that made it out have done some excellent things with their lives.
Another great presentation. As always, I feel sorry for the family and friends loss. It should have been an awesome way to start the new year, but it turn tragic. The friends and rescue people not giving up is inspiring. It gives me hope that if I'm in a bad situation, maybe I could survive and help others survive. Thank you for the safely tips at th he end.
Aside from all your obvious masterpiece videos. One thing that really puts your storytelling videos on the top shelf (in my humble opinion), is the soundtrack! Having an amazing ability to not only fit in every story so well, it also makes hearing it alongside your natural narrating talent, like it's the 1st time, everytime. Thank you for making these award worthy videos sir!
One thing I have learned over the years living in winter and mountain country; do not go skiing off piste 😣 Even though it is often expensive and often also very busy, it is much safer to ski on regular pistes. Even if you bring emergency equipment like a beacon, off piste usually means in the middle of nowhere and far from assistance and an avalanche can still kill you quite easily no matter how well prepared for emergencies you are 🤷♀️
Your videos are so well made and informative, without extraneous confusing info. I just subscribed, because your videos are far above most of the other disaster vids that are out there.
I live in Colorado and people think an avalanche is nice fluffy snow. It's rocks, trees and ice at 100 MPH. In addition to what OD suggested wear a helmet and have a personal locator beacon.
Removing Sam''s boot was a mistake. That was a rookie error. Having lost a friend back in 1996 to an avalanche, I understand how painful this story is. I hope Blake's family has recovered as well as the other boys. Very sad story, but one that can also teach. Love your channel!!!!!
I’ve been skiing most of my life, and I would never ski in the back country. I lost a friend/acquaintance heli skiing due to an avalanche. They obviously knew the risks because they took the right gear. But risks and reality are two different things. They are lucky that four of them survived.
You just didn't get good enough. Skiing and Snowboarding are both quite difficult at first, and exhausting, you have to push through that until you know what you're doing and can comfortably ski/ride with speed before it really becomes fun. Once you reach that point, imo it's the absolute most fun thing I've ever done. There is nothing like it. I can snowboard for 7 hours a day 4 days a week most winters and never get tired, having a blast the entire time. Especially if there's fresh powder, nothing in the world feels like that, it's like surfing on clouds. It's really the same with all extreme sports, you have to put in the work before the fun reveals itself. That's just skill based recreation, the more your skill improves, the higher your potential for fun.
You must take a satellite phone, flares, bethadine powder for open wounds, a first aid kit particularly wide bandages & cotton arm slings for breaks & immobilisation of limbs, rehydration powder...shock will kill just as quick as infection ...learn the basics of remote area first aid esp limb injury treatment especially when your on your own & helps is a long time coming, what you do will make a difference doing nothing will not
Thank you OD! You really bring your videos to life through your narrative talent. Peace to your family in your tragic loss. That's not lost among your loving online family here. 🙏 Keep the Faith brother.
It's dreadfully tragic, but when are people going to stop tempting a battle with nature? Man will never win. Some people and their thirst for adrenalin packed adventures or worse still their egos making them think they're immune to the dangers in nature.
Thousands of times i heard this thing : " the airplane flew over us and they could not see us " .....Well how much does it coast a simple flare ? One of those that they burn every weekends in the footbal stadiums ?
It's amazing how many people ski off piste without essential safety kit but they do all the time. I was in France when a group of trainees led by two instructors went under a closed rope and down into a bowl and guess what. No safety gear and they didn't even know how many were in the group. We probed for two hours, one young man was found alive but a young lady died. Absolutely tragic and unnecessary
You have everything to live for . . . and then you go skiing on a mountain notorious for avalanches. I dont get it. At least get to know your child before you decide to roll the dice. 😢
It's hard to muster any sympathy for people who deliberately put themselves in danger--as if there was nowhere to ski in MT except an area with huge avalanche risk. Even less sympathy for people willing to leave their children fatherless and/or turn their wives into widows in pursuit of an adrenaline rush. Irresponsible, selfish, and immature. I dated a guy like this; he had a 6-year-old son, who never entered into his decision-making process in his pursuit of what amounted to bragging rights. People like tis just disgust me.
One guy had lost a third of his blood? That is fatal as a man has 5 to 7 litres of blood and can loose maximum 1 litre to stay alive. But a third is around 2 litres.
I lost a third of my blood to internal bleeding from a pacemaker implant that went wrong. Surgeon poked the little "lead" (tiny screw) through my heart muscle and nicked my right lung. Lung collapsed, fluid around my heart and lung for months, internal bleeding leading to a cantaloupe sized hematoma at the battery site, and left rib cage turned black from gravity pulling the blood down. Had to have my first blood transfusion. You can live through it, especially if you're in shock, you don't fight your body so much if you're in shock. Also helps being young, these guys were in their 20's, I was 33, and elderly person wouldn't have as much chance.
@@rickylee4228 Yes, it is. I keep hearing this word and I know why. I would rather they just tell the story and the heck with the fancy words to describe something that doesn't require fancy words. A satellite phone would've had Sam rescued sooner, but it wouldn't have saved Blake.

They COULD NOT HAVE PREPARED ANY BETTER FOR THAT. Do you understand my position any better explained the same way a second time. And because someone has a differing opinion to yours doesn't mean they need to 'have a word with themselves'. These men were far more mature at 25 than you are now! Sheesh!
