Capsized in the Pacific Ocean | The Rose-Noëlle Crew Story
In May 1989, John Glennie docked at Picton in the South Island of New Zealand, where his Rose-Noëlle was preparing for a Tonga and needed a crew. A few local men decided to join the crew just two days before departure. With everything set, they departed, ready for the adventures awaiting them. Little did they know in a few days, a rogue wave would capsize the boat, and it would have to survive the unforgiving Pacific Ocean.

I was repelling with my church group in Yosemite back in 1981 when I was just a kid. Long story short, I went last and no one was around to do it right, apparently. The church youth group leader was by himself and he held me upside until the 80 foot drop ended. I will never repel again. Never did. Surprised he didn't drop me....church people are not normal. It was not safe. But, maybe Jesus did what I asked. I just let go and then didn't do it right. But, I lived. These people are with God, I'm sure. People could easily die in Yosemite, too. I don't like that park.

I've seen enough of life to make these two statements first of all bloggers are just narcissists who don't know how to keep a journal to themselves.. and Wanderlust should be looked at as a symptom of underlying depression because no matter where they go it's not where they want to be Wanderlust these people also cannot stand to be alone for more than 5 minutes and need constant validation. So travel bloggers are really all the red flags in the world rolled into one and need psychological help

When you go to Yellowstone there are warnings everywhere. Even when I was a kid in the 70s. Signs, pamphlets, park employees telling you to be careful on trails, and yet people just don't listen. A serious lack of respect for the brutality of nature. I once had to physically grab a little boy because his parents were encouraging him to go hug an elk calf so they could take a picture. Then I had to find a way to make the parents understand that those weren't tame animals and they were lethal. Even with the warnings, people don't listen.

I was a SAR Swimmer in the Navy. Our squadron was deployed to USS Enterprise. I recall a time when we were operating missions near the Alutian Islands. Flying 4 hours a day. I have never seen sea states like that in my life or since. Literally spray coming over the deck (80 feet) of Enterprise. Truxton having their decks completely flooded navigating 50’ swells. The color of the water I will never forget. A deep green color.

As tragic as incidents like this are, I still can't understand the urge to risk your life to climb a mountain. There are many ways to empower our spirits and encourage others than doing something so inherently dangerous. What do we pass on in such activities? Do we encourage experienced, capable people or just possibly, do we unintentionally stimulate people who are NOT capable (of such a climb, dive, or whatever) to risk their lives? The individual must decide for themselves if such risks are worth a life - their own, a person who they might influence, OR the people who are tasked with their rescue. What do we actually gain vs. what we may lose...

In my younger days, I was one of four crewing an old 40' wooden sailboat traveling from NC to the Caribbean. On the third day out, we encountered a storm with gale force winds and 25 foot waves. One rogue wave knocked us down and a second one turned us over, but the boat righted itself. We never experienced anything close to what the crew of the Rose-Noëlle did. But even at this much smaller scale "disaster", I learned what it was like to be in danger (even briefly) with no practical means of assistance or rescue. As the winds abated and the weather began to clear, we still had another prolonged period of sailing amidst huge rolling seas which was terrifying enough. The lesson learned was that attitude is a key survival mechanism. One has to focus on the tasks at hand; trimming sails, maintaining heading, preparing meals, etc. I had to force back instances of rising panic, which is a fruitless reaction to danger. Trying to maintain a sense of optimism when the sea and winds seem hell-bent on destroying the vessel isn't always easy, but it is vital.

A ton of negligence on his part for sure. But Glennie definitely was instrumental in the survival of the crew. I'm sure it took everything for the crew to not lash out at him. But they understood that harboring these feelings would not help in their survival. But when they eventually returned to land, as the police officer noticed, there was tension between the crew and Glennie. And it's very telling they all never got together again. I'm sure the crew wanted nothing to do with Glennie when the ordeal was over.
