I remember this, as I lived in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the time. There’s an old book written from Lauren’s voice on her experience called, “And I alone Survived”. Not only was she in a light clothing, she didn’t even have underwear on, because she hadn’t had time to grab clean laundry. No matter how hot the day, whenever I think of how cold Lauren must have been, lying in the wreckage, high in the mountains, I shiver violently.
I wonder if she regrets not listening to her inner voice telling her to skip this trip? Recently, as I was walking around this movie set that I'm watching in northern Arizona, my inner voice told me to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes. 3 steps later, I saw a western diamondback coiled up under a bush. Had I ignored the warning, I wouldn't be here to type this as I'm well over an hour from help. I don't always pay attention to my inner voice, but I'm really glad I did that time!
Wow what an amazing survival story. Excellently Narrated. Just goes to show we should always listen to our intuition. She's sn amazingly strong lady with tremendous resilience and a strong will to survive.
What a story & what a woman. I really liked how it was retrofitted with the vintage footage which looked like an old dramatization of the event. Nice catch ! Thank you.
I can shed some light on this: I lived in this area in the 1970’s, and there were lots of ‘hippies’ who would have drug parties in the summer cabins. They were a complete nuisance to the locals, stealing, setting fires, and damaging property while on their LSD highs. It was not a bit unusual to see them wandering around half clothed, coming down off the drugs, and most locals wanted nothing to do with them. No doubt, they thought Lauren was one of the hippies, or druggies, which would explain their refusal to help her. Such were the times…

A classic example of what can happen when we don't heed our instinct and intuition. The rational mind often overrides these feelings, because we've been conditioned to do that. Even using rational thought, there were many factors that were not even considered before making the decision to fly. Instead, she allowed herself to be swayed by mere words of confidence and the attraction of adventure. Fortunately, her strength of character and inner strength got her through this terrible ordeal.
This one had me, again, on the edge of my seat! And with the way things are in todays world, just the day to day things eellike a struggle. This videovmakes me feel like....okay, she survived a freaking plane crash, maybe I can survive the turmoil going on in the USA right now! (A lot of it has made me feel like giving up!) Another great one! I've heard it questioned why so many people lost, are found without shoes or in searching for lost people, their shoes are found separate from them. Now we know. She took hers off twice in the beginning, the first to climb down the last 100 ft of the mountain and the second time for a minor reason but was then just unable to find them. Exhaustion, mind games, who knows, but now we know...I really liked your words at the end. Thanks, JR
I get it. When I was 16 years old at a library I suddenly felt the need to get home fast. My friends father picked us up and asked me what was wrong. I told him that you must drive faster because something is very wrong with my mother. While he drove, I told him that I see ambulances and police flashing lights at my house in my minds eye. When we pulled up the street, nothing was unusual. When I got inside I found my mother had fallen in the shower and was hurt real bad with blood all over the shower. When the police and ambulance came, I saw that same picture! Later on my Mom told me that she was calling out for me in her prayers for help. I heard that message, no doubt.

@@timberdaniels7317 have you guys seen the news about North Carolina? Hurricane really hit them hard. A bunch of different RUclipsrs, like the ones who do the helicopter videos are down there helping with relief efforts and rescues. It's crazy.
We were driving from SW Virginia to New York to visit my parenrs. We were hit by a blizzard. This was 1968. Our car went into a ditch in rural PA. The chains on the tires broke and blew out a tire. Our suitcases were in the trunk. Back then. Ford Fairlanes used the same key for the ignition as for the doors and trunk. The key snapped in the frozen trunk lock. Now no extra clothes or abiliry to turn on the engine for warmth. We saw a light and walked to a motel. Took almost an hour. The owners turned us away. It was Christmas Eve. I was wearing a skirt and high heel boots. Too! I begged the couple over and over to get a room or at least use their phone. But no. So my boyfriend and I hiked all night and ended up sheltering in a phone booth until daylight. Phone broken. Christmas day. The gas station nearby was closed. A man came looking for gas. When he pulled out again, I threw myself on the hood of his car and begged. My boyfriend was almost catatonic. The driver gave us a ride to an open gas station. The owner put us in front of the stove with coffees. Called his wife who came with cookies and blankets. Meanwhile. His sons found our now completely buried car abd towed it to the station. Replaced the blown out tire. And here's the part that still makes me tear up. He refused to take any money. Merry Christmas, he said.

What an amazing story of sheer will power & the desire to not give up until it’s over. Pathetic those motels couldn’t simply call 911, it cost them maybe 0.25 to make that call
Every single time I get a bad feeling, I follow it. There was a horrendous storm a few weeks ago on the morning I had work. I decided to call out because something didn't feel right. Apparently there was a terrible car crash on the road I take to work. I'm not saying I would have been involved, but you absolutely HAVE to listen to your gut feeling. Always. I also hope the men who denied her help rot in the worst level of hell. How the hell do you say NO to using a telephone for a poor woman covered in dirt and blood? Lauren Elder is an incredible survivor. I'm so glad she made it.
Always go with your gut feeling. If it feels unsafe, don’t go! I can’t believe people would not help her! Great job on narrating and visuals. My adrenaline got a boost. 😊
It was the 70’s. Lots of people were trippin on LSD. We lived in the same area, and my Dad would never open the door to people he didn’t know with us 3 kids in the house.
On a VFR flight under Part 91 the pilot is not required to file a flight plan, although it's a good habit. Then if he didn't close his flight plan on landing, someone would start looking for them and have an idea of their route.

It is not the first time a plane crash survivor was refused help. The drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd band was so bloody and scary looking that he got shot when he went to get help.
i read the book when it first came out, and just finished reading it again today. I agree with you that reading her book is an excellent option, and it's a very quick read. I knocked it out in just over a day. The film footage from the movie was fairly interesting as I hadn't seen it before, but the narration was dull as dirt. The information was pretty much straight out of the book, but the narrator was so monotone that I nearly fell asleep. I have produced and directed voice work for audio drama, so this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
If were her I would hold a grudge against the other hotel workers. Not helping someone simply because other people, who eventually committed a crime, walked around looking like her is stupid.
You sir would be my 2nd pick if I was planning an out door adventure, first pick of course would be a trained survivalist BUT the knowledge you have would be very important on what to avoid
Haha I appreciate my 2nd ranking. I'm like Anthony Hopkins character in the movie "The Edge." Have a ton of knowledge. Thankfully, have never put it in practice.
I think I’d go with the knowledge of generally what not to do. Well…. what to not do in the outdoors. Gives me extra options. I think this lady probably had learnt things from her father. She had knowledge and ideas as well as location accuracy… I’m going with that (I mean after these a subscription to Garmin would be my survival tip for everything, especially in the sea, if my phone wasn’t so good.)
Way to go, Jay. You're the man. I'll bet your friends were really impressed with that stunt. Like Nike says, Just do it, taking along as many naively trusting friends as possible. Who needs Death Valley with amateur weekend pilots around?

At first I could not understand those people why they refused help. But when I heard they were afraid of the Manson Family, I understood better. Just remember the murder of Sharon Tate!
1. Great survival story. I don't understand why was she hallucinating (no head injury was mentioned) after only one day of harsh conditions when other people functioned for tens or even hundreds of days in worse circumstances. 2. After her horrible experience at the 1st hotel she should have tried the police station, not another hotel at the other end of the city ...
She had broken teeth. That’s a pretty good indicator that she hit her head. Not to mention that even without hitting your head directly, your brain can be damaged by being bounced around inside your skull from your body being thrown around - like what happens in a car accident or… a plane crash.
Trying to head down the mountain vs. staying and hoping rescue will find you. Such a hard decision. I wonder if rescue would have found her in time if she had stayed?
