The Italian version of the manga kept the heavier insult ("You moron!") intact. It was reduced to "But you're a fool!" (with "but" commonly used as an expression of disbelief in Italian, should the sentence originally not require it - e.g. "Dài!" means "Come on!", while "Ma dài!" becomes "But come on!" as in "OH COME ON!") in the anime. As for Kai's absence, Mediaset having syndication rights on the anime means the IP is more or less theirs regarding animation. Given Kai's abridging of the original Z show would mean shorter reruns, Mediaset chose not to allow it to be dubbed.
He doesn’t really say “Ma” tho… it’s more of a “uh?”. The meaning is the same tho, it shows disbelief. Italian dub took a lot of liberties I didn’t like, but this one was fun and fit the scene.
I find it very interesting how much Freeza's line varies from each language. Thank you for this compilation and thank everyone who helped with the translations.
Might be due to censorship as well. The Italian dub was commissioned by Mediaset, they did not want any character to ever say words such as “kill”, “die”, “death” or “i’ll kill you”. So I guess this is why Frieza said something so weird.
