End of the Affair on later with Jools Holland is probably one of the best performances i have ever seen on RUclips. Ben Howard really is a treasure!
PREACH! ❤️
This!
That version of depth over distance gives me chills everytime 🥹🥰
One of the top RUclips gems 💎
My souls favorite 🙏🏼
My top Ben moments:
1. Esmerelda at Casino de Paris - The most haunting performance I've ever heard from anyone. Gives me sheer goosebumps every single time. Hell I could say the entire Casino de Paris is prime Every Kingdom Ben.
2. Agatha's Song (Live in Paris) - Has to be his greatest love song he's ever made. I'd put it in the same category as Promise and Depth Over Distance. It's a crime the lyrics aren't on the album version.
3. Time is Dancing (Glastonbury 2015) such an incredible rendition of the song, extra lyrics and all. The passion in him as he sings the extra verses is so amazing.
4. Tiny Desk Concert - Waited for this for years and it delivered. Treated with a beyond stunning version of Follies Fixture and even a new song that made me grin ear to ear.
5. Any time he sang Untitled (Now Rookery) during the Noonday tour. Any time at all. I would say modern tour with this song is great too as it's beautiful when the audience sings along with him. But I feel the OG Untitled had such an intimate quality to it. It was mysterious. It was something we as a collective fanbase wanted to go to the shows and hear or to have a studio version. This version is absolutely breathtaking and I frequently go back to those performances in awe.
My favorite cover will always be Hideaway too so that deserves an honorable mention!
Untitled / Rookery !!! I've been playing this song on repeat over and over again at the Splendour In The Grass live ♥️
Love this Crimsonz 😍 [1] just watched this now, hauntingly beautiful.. [3] one of his best songs, so so so well created, flawless [4] tiny desk, love this - quite abstract in parts
also the promise in casino de Paris - that often makes me cry, it's so haunting
Cheers, Ben Howard will is always be my favorite artist. Miss those days when I first discovered him. Good times.
One of the best ⭐️
Absolutely love all the Ben Howard content that you can only find on RUclips! Never expected to see him here on Mahogany!
Such a huge fan of his - and the first album and second album phase definitely my personal favourite era! Always wish we did a Mahogany Session with him but never managed to 🪝 him!
@@MahoganySessions I love Every Kingdom but my personal favorites are These Waters and Old Pine EPs which you don't see much of
Such a FIRE artist! I started listening when Noonday Dream came out and instantly became obsessed
Looooove Noonday 😊
Really appreciate the nod to The Burren. That video was my introduction to Ben's work nearly 10 years ago, and to this day it stands as evidence that his studio work is only the tip of the iceberg of his creative genius. Thanks for taking me down memory lane!
The 'Call Me Maybe' cover is a must watch/listen! Looks like Ben has so much fun with it, and he gives the song a completely different vibe!
I had a straight toss up between those two for this video - also love that one, it’s like they can’t believe they’re doing Call Me Maybe 🤣
The video we didn’t know we needed 😢
Yes James!
Ben Howard is a legend. Thank you for this video! Golden.
So glad you enjoyed Finn 🚀🚀🚀🚀
Ben's best RUclips moment is his Pick & Go Tutorial.. The unfinished song in it is just phenomenal! And another one is Ben Howard Jamming in Ireland
Time is dancing live @ glasto is an absolute treasure
Concur completely 💯
My personal favorites for his solo stuff are Only Love and Further Away for Gentle Mec, it just looks like he’s having a blast and the guitar parts are truly stunning!
Don’t think I’ve seen that vid.. could you share a link buddy?
The "Depth Over Distance" is the best YT video EVER!
TOO RIGHT!!
Oh my gosh so true !!
One video i keep going back to is when he did a live from his house in leeds, with all his friends and family for launching his album, the music, the natural tones, the banter, it felt like i was there, an intimate part of that beautiful moment. i wish i could experience it again for the first time.
Hey Haris, just searched for it but can't find! Can you share a link ❤️
@@MahoganySessions Hey, absolutely. I dont think the video was uploaded by him but this is the link ruclips.net/video/HP-nDvu0xd4/видео.html&ab_channel=ClarkWilliams
I think this has since been taken down? There are so many great videos of him and they have come and gone over the years. Think I went through and saved a bunch a few years ago in fear that they would be removed.
My very favorite person. Ben Howard has kept me alive. Just to hear what he does next. Thank you for this. ❤
Ben has played The Burren elsewhere, but the XFM version is fantastic. Dancing in the dark is my favorite cover of his for sentimental reasons but all of these clips are fantastic! Thanks for putting this together.
It's interesting that all the videos are from his early years. But I have to agree his current stuff doesn't have the same magical appeal anymore.
The feeling you got with “depth over distance” is probably the same i have with “burgh island “its probably the only song i still play on a daily basis.Ben is simpy amazing…i got tickets for his concert on 20-06-2023 in Amsterdam Carre.and life was good…😁
I cannot count how many times I've listened to that Depth over Distance cover over the years. When I saw the title, I *knew* that would be in here somewhere. Ben Howard is so good.
It had to be! What are your two all-time favourite Ben Howard tracks?
@@MahoganySessions Always loved "Depth over Distance" (clearly), but also absolutely fell in love with "Old Pine" the first time I heard it. Something about that song, makes me think of going on an outdoors adventure in the autumn. Bonfires, having fun, no cares in the world.
Saw his first gig in Ireland and to say i was spellbound is an understatement. I think Burgh Island and End of the affair are my favourites :D
I want to talk about music the way this gorgeous man does, opening up and showing how songs have affected us is a profound way of connecting.
A great example of how it makes me see things in a different light is the song ¨Only Love¨, one I tend to skip when listening to the album. But imagining the memories people have from this particular Glastonbury performance, opens my eyes to details and emotions I didn't comprehend before.
Thank you, hope to see more!
Glad to see some Ben Howard appreciation here! I consider learning Ben's guitar style and songs to be an exceptionally great way to step outside into a world of great musical possibilities. I'm truly glad you listed the criminally unknown The Burren piece for not enough people know about it.
I love how dark he went in BI and IFWW, with how his music is already so beautifully layered on their own already as standalone pieces, like Rivers in Your Mouth and All is Now Harmed. There's a treasure trove of songs we've still yet to see published and only have as raw camera recordings. Pieces like Quiet Me Down, White Lights, and the piece the fans dubbed Love You More also deserve to be known!!
I love Ben Howard! He's an amazing artist and the members of his band are sooo talented! They are fire on stage🔥
1) I Forget Where We Were performance at Glastonbury 2015 is my all time favourite 💫
2) Oats In The Water live at Greenaway pro 2013 - gives me chills every time!
3) Promise Rockpalast Cologne 2012 - such a hauntingly beautiful song ♥️
😍 I think we gonna need a Part II before long 💎
@@MahoganySessions Indeed ♥️
what a nice surprise to find one of my favourite YT accounts covering my absolute favourite artist! I really hope you guys can get him on the show some day!
Aaah lovely comment - and many more to come too 🚀
He has all the words
❤️
This performance of 'The Burren' has been taken down, so glad I saw it before it went
BH is the GOAT for me. Dude just loves music and you can feel it in his voice
💯 true GOAT
MORE BEN HOWARD VIDEOS
😁
Its been said but this version of depth over distance is amazing and is such a warm memory for me. My first ever Ben Howard video and I have been hooked since then. One that i havent seen suggested yet is his performance at casino de paris (oats in the water, esmerelda, promise, the wolves) it’s impossible to pick just one. The transitions between each song were also all amazing and something he and the band are always so great at. I got back to that one alot. He really did come in fully baked & this video is now being added to my list of iconic BH youtube videos 💕
Cool idea for a series - can't wait for more of these kind of videos!
Thanks Andrew…. Bon Iver next 👀
Ben Howard! So good!!
End of the Affair on Glastonbury 2015 is just freaking brutal!
Truly one of my all time favorite albums, Nostalgia is the best way to describe it for sure!
I can literally taste the memories of that period!!
@@MahoganySessions Absolutely, it was the perfect score for anyone's story really miss Ben Howard's earlier works
I love this artist and his music is saving my life everytime I listen :)
Some fav's of mine include: Depth over Distance (2012 Lowlands - he gets a bit more intense vocally here), Call me Maybe (BBC live lounge... Figure 8/Twice cover is great too), his "solo sessions," and Amoeba Records was the first full live show I fell in love with long ago.
Love these ones Kevin, and going to need to do a Part II in the future with all the amazing comments so far.. going to watch the Lowland one today 🙌
Me looking at all my signed ben howard records and then seeing this video pop up >.> . also in the kcrw performance, India is playing bass notes, over the chord changes, much like you would on an organ using foot pedals. Also I think his "A hand to Hold" he did with huck on yt deserves a spot
Ah that’s what she’s doing. Thanks JP! What’s your favourite BH track if you had to pick one?
@@MahoganySessions I think it might have either burgh island, or IFFWW, just the first time I heard that song I was bawling
The whole of his itunes Festival set 2014. The lights, the music, it's absolutely amazing.
End Of The Affair on Jools Holland is one of my all time favourite Ben Howard performances, the last part were he's shouting into the guitar is just incredible I get goosebumps everytime here's a link to the performance ruclips.net/video/T4yh2NZ0kJw/видео.html
CHILLS every time.
Great! And so we’ll presented
🥹
Great choice of tunes. Ben got me though my 20's still listen to all his albums on a regular basis. Word on the grape vine there will be a new album next year and can't wait to see where he goes with it. He really is a special musician.
Some great artists/bands which would be great see you talk about would be Kurt Vile, Angus Stone, Jose Gonzalez, Half Moon Run x
Ah so similar to you Matt - defined a huge part of my 20s.. I love how he’s evolved over the years and I wonder if the Aaron Dessner connection on the last record means any direct work with Bon Iver in the future 🙏❤️
Years ago he had a live version of his song ‘London’ on his website. Its stupidly good! End of the affair on jools holland is a must. The solo video of ‘further away’ outdoors is cool. But ‘the burren’ is the best
His cover of Lana Del Rey's Video Games is impeccable. The way he plays that guitar is transcendental.
Either way great selections
Great clips. Only one I would've added is the acoustic performance of small things
kier has an amazing version of the burren on yt I think, and the performance of it in the 2013 glasgo concert is also amazing !
Ben Howard - End of the Affair - Later...Jools Holland 😎
Such a good performance - in the old Jools format as well, everyone in the round ❤️
Suggestions for next videos : Ray Lamontagne or Bon Iver 🥰
Just posted Bon Iver! ruclips.net/video/DAaf1IUL-1s/видео.html
Totally with you on all these. Check these out If you haven’t seen:
Video games Lana del Rey cover
I forget where we where live lounge (there’s a solo one that’s great too)
End of affair where he really screams into the guitar(I can’t find the specific one)
Days of lantana in that big house thing
Anything from that maide vail session Conrad, rivers etc.
2018 splendor in the grass has an amazing set with an all time transition into the second song.
He plays a version of ‘further away’ outside the louvre (I think) that’s got an awesome guitar part per usual lol.
Underrated cover is hideaway cause it’s the farthest thing from an acoustic guitar song an he finds a wild solution to that.
His Figure 8 is so good I heard it first on a pandora station
Bonus: there’s a video he’s describing his “pick and go” techniques and he plays an unreleased song that sounds unreal.
I thought I was the only one
Neeeever
Absolutely loved the bbc live lounge vid we’re here did his cover version of call me maybe
Absolutely nailed it watch it loads of times
Love that one too Zeff, the fact they pulled it off so well shows how goooood they are 🔥
Absolutely. Mind you I went to see him in Brixton a couple of years back performing the new album it’s taking a while to sit well with me very very different which is very cool how different he can write . Glad he played some of the classics in the end . Very talented bunch of musicians 👌
LOVE BEN HOWARD
Ditto 😊😊😊😊
If you haven’t already, check out his song “Conrad.” I just found it recently, and I’m absolutely in love with it. It’s one of those songs that you feel in your soul.
LOVE the version of Conrad for Maida Vale sessions ❤️❤️❤️
This selection feels like BH ended a decade ago. Nothing from times after "I Forget Where We Were" or "Noonday Dream". I guess it's just a nostalgia trip.
Always room for a Part 2 👀
It looks like a Roland pedal keyboard PK-9 or something similar.
Pretty sure India is playing bass with her feet. all those pedals are a different note. Its the only way she can play the tom drums at the same time while Chris bond is playing drums and electric guitar.
Basically, India is playing bass (pads) with her feet!
There are a few other versions of the burren, this is one with the full band, thanks to kier: ruclips.net/video/dThQ1h2lf8I/видео.html and you can also hear it in the 'Spirit of alaska' Movie
Thanks for sharing Jilles! ❤️
I love this idea, but would love the information before or after the clip and not partly talking over the music.
Thanks for the feedback Anke - it’s quite tricky with RUclips playing clips in isolation, as there’s a risk the automated system can block the video so having a layer of voice over / only showing a short clip helps get around that x
For me one of the best was Black Flies on Maida Vale session. The depth.. 🥲 ruclips.net/video/vGXFAmUZ8Mk/видео.html
