I drove a standard (manual transmission) for most of my life in Canada. It was cheaper at time of purchase and was more economical on fuel than an automatic transmission. Nowadays, some automatic transmissions use less fuel than a manual. The turning signal lever is on the left hand side on modern cars.
Here it tends to vary by brand. VAG used to have indicators on the right - which I think was an inheritance from a design for countries driving on the right.
I do not live in the UK( I live in Spain) but something that I realized traveling between Europe and the Americas is that Europeans are the nicest drivers in the world...Americans, Canadians, Australian, Latinamericans are wild in comparison.

Where in Canada i went to Vancouver as teenager when my did got remarried. He told my grandparents don't ever stop close to a person on a hill aw they all drive automatic and if it's a manual they will run back a couple of meters
Currently going through the Ontario, Canada licensing (each province regulates their own rules). We have a written test that takes 20-30 minutes (G1), local road test that lasts about ten minutes (G2), and highway driving test about thirty minutes (G). You have to complete these within five years to be fully licensed, with minimum wait times between each test. Most provinces have a 16 age minimum, but there is a place with a 14 year minimum.
In Australia is a little similar we have l1 but it’s done on a computer and then you learn a certain amount of hours, then l2 which is full learning for 30 or so hours then if you pass p1 (red plate) for 1 year then p2 (green plate) for another year and then after that you’re fully qualified once you pass your p1 you don’t have to take a test but for l2 you do. 16 is the official age for learners and 18 to fully pass your test so mainly you have to go through both your learners between those 2 years if you want to pass your p’s.
I have to write it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I rode the provisional licence with friends who taught me everything from scratch. I had no instructor or anything like that. Today I passed on the first try! With a few mistakes but I still passed! I just watched your videos&dgn and it really helped! I also passed the theory on the 1st time by learning from the 4in1 app! Thank you!
Regarding the comment on stalk placement in the beginning, I think she might have gotten confused by the stalk arrangement on Mercs. The indicator stalk is on the left on my car and the wipers on the right, which is the standard arrangement for left hand drive. On the contrary Japanese domestic cars can have them the other way round with the indicator stalk on the right. That makes it easier to use the indicators even if you need to change gear at the same time, just as in a left hand drive car.
Hearing how much you have to do to get a license in the UK and in Canada compared to here in the USA is crazy. Or at least in my state. You can get a permit that only requires a written test (which is pretty easy to cheat on if you're sneaky enough) at 14 if you’re in a drivers ed class or at 15 without taking any classes at all. Which allows you to drive with no restrictions as long as someone who has a license and is 21+ is in the passenger seat. Then at 16 you’re able to get your licenses as long as you’ve had your permit for a year. For that you can either take a driving test with a state trooper in the car or a parent can sign that you’ve driven 50 hours. Or if you’re 17+, you can just skip the permit and get a license.
My G1 exit was not just driving in a test centre. You have to have had your G1 for a year (8 months with drivers ed) and it is a street based test. The only part they have moved to the test centre recently is parallel park, and 3 point turn. Then your g2 exit /full G test is 30-45 min with highway.
That was entertaining, you can tell the lvl of experience but coming from Europe myself I know how the km/mile and everything being flipped in the car can throw you off! Respect tho 😂❤
Interesting video, Aman. I think the one big thing I noticed not mentioned was that your aunt drove much of it with a hand on the gear-stick, including through a number of roundabouts - and therefore with just one hand on the steering wheel.
I'm Canadian and I found shoulder checks were difficult in the UK because we look over the opposite shoulder doing shoulder checks and my neck is more flexible on one side than the other.
My brother in law was saying yesterday that he could drive manual in America as they don’t do separate tests for them, so same as Canada! He has a license in England now and feels weird that he’s now restricted to automatic only! 😂
Yes always wondered, US/CDN restricted to automatic-only licence if living here, yet if a tourist visiting uk/Europe for two weeks can hire a manual car and drive around.
We just have a better system here.. one of my close friends moved to America. After a year she had to get an American license… she was literally driving round a carpark for ten mins and the examiner passed her and said he could see she could drive… not very strict at all 😅🤣
A few notes on Canada: - driving licensing is a provincial competency, so test rules differ across the country. - in Quebec, learners must have a minimum number of hours with an approved school. - most drivers actually learn with their parents. - there are no L signs for learner drivers, which is a pain Chips are terrible in Canada.
