Iowa played you in the Rose Bowl of the previous season. We shit ourselves in the first half eventually going down 39-6 before we made a furious comeback to fall 46-34. We felt awful... until we watched that same Washington team the next year absolutely dominate college football and become the best team I ever saw except for the 95 cornhuskers. And that team would have given the Huskers all they could handle. we were beat by one hell of a football team.
I was a youngster in High School and went to the UW Football Camp the summer after the National Championship (and for 2 summers following that) and I got to meet a bunch of these guys, as well as Coach Don James. What a great thrill for a kid and an amazing memory to share with my kids.
As a matter of fact, although the 'canes were awarded the AP national championship that year, the HUSKIES actually finished that season #1 in MORE POLLS than the 'canes did. Look it up if you don't believe me. The University of Miami had a very good football team that year. But they also had Gino Torretta. The University of Washington's football team was better in just about every measurable way that season. The U-Dub Huskies: the TRUE national football champions of 1991.
I think the only poll that really mattered to Don James was the one that they got. To have your fellow coaches tell you 'You're the best' is the highest honor.
The final comments from Bo Schembechler perfectly display the total dominance of the Washington Defense....and the great class of Coach Schembechler! R.I.P!
I was very fortunate to go see this game. I remember the UW fan base was half of the stadium for this game. 1991 Huskies still one of my favorite college football teams ever , and never got the full proper credit as one of the great college football teams. A great defensive & offensive team as well.
I don't remember the exact quote, either. I loved Billy Joe. If I remember correctly he NEVER LOST a game as a Husky. He did have a tendency to speak his mind (for better or for worse). I think what he said after the Dawgs beat the Cougs to go to 11 - 0 was that he wanted to play Miami head-to-head. Don James (and others) were afraid that that wouldn't sit too well with the Rose Bowl people, since of course back in those days the Rose Bowl was still Pac-10 vs. Big Ten, only.
I played for UW from 93-98. Here is the Bottom Line. Miami ruled the 80's. No question. I wanted to go there when I was a kid growing up in TX. UW came on in the late 80's and peaked in 91'... with a team that is widely regarded as one of the best college football teams of all time. The BEST college defense of all time without a doubt. We ran the early 90's and the team that we put together to face the '94 Canes, turned out to be a better "Team" too.
You didnt run sht in the early 90s. 90. Ga tech. 91 split w the U. 92 bama beats miami. 93 fsu. 94 miami played nebraska. Nebraska won. 95 Nebraska. 96 uf. 97 Michigan 98 Penn state 99 Tennessee. So i don't see uw in much anything here
Napoleon Kaufman (18th Pick in the 1995 draft), Mark Bruener (25th pick in the 1995 draft), Lincoln Kennedy (9th Pick in the 1993 draft), Dana Hall (18th Pick in the NFL draft), Steve Emtman (1st pick in the NFL draft), D'Marco Farr, Mark Brunell, Billy Joe Hobert, Aaron Pierce... and I'm leaving out TONS of others! Hell yeah they were stacked!
Great memories. Steve Etman was a BEAST. Mario Bailey was Cold. DANG! PASSION is whats missing at UW. I never thought that Ty Willingham was the man for the job but in his last 2 years he brought in some good player recruit and SARK the SHARK is the man to mold them.
Such a turnaround for these two, particularly UW. I'm a UO student but I remember when I was a kid beating UW was this huge deal and not just because of the rivalry because they were always in the top 10.
Steve Emtman was quite a beast for that team, unfortunately injuries hurt him in the NFL, Emtman also made a cameo in Little Giants. Napoleon Kaufman stopped his career short to be an ordained minister and Mark Brunell got a SB ring with the Saints last year.
Emtman was by far the best defensive players lincoln kennedy was absolutely amazing 2 great college quarterbacks, napoleon kaufman was great. The defense was one of the greatest i have ever seen in college football. Was the best team i have seen along with the 95 huskers and the 2001 hurricanes. 2000 huskies should have had a chance at national championships as well i believe.
Some facts. 1) 91 Huskies was considered the best Pac 10 Team in the last 20 years. 2) The Huskies had the #1 overall defense and #2 overall offense. 3) Huskies outscored opponents 495 vs 115 . Miami was 371 to 100. 4) 10 football players drafted immediately with 2 1st rounders compared to 4 on Miami. 5) Huskies had more champ polls (11 to 8) and more major poll votes (3 to 1) 6) Huskies faced stronger Michigan team. Like Huskies, Michigan was rated higher by the other polls (#3).
Do you really want to compare all-time NFL talent with Miami??? No, you don't lol. 65-7 in 2001, remember that? and 5 to 2 National Championships all-time
It was so fun to be at this game, plus people where yelling Desmond Who to each other after the game was over. Still to this day, one of my favorite teams ever.
Miami was not even close. The only common opponent was Nebraska, and when asked Tom Osborne said Miami was not even in the 'same league as Washington. Miami would have been demolished by this team. Half of the Huskies ended up in the NFL, with Entmann the #1 pick.
I think very few - if any - other teams in NCAA history could've beat the Dawgs this day. Maybe the 1995 Cornhuskers or 2001 Canes but damn this team was nails - on both sides of the ball.
"pride aside 91 huskies way better than the 91 canes wish they would have played." You're welcome to your opinion, but Miami gave up 8 points a game that year-their best D ever! Oh, and Miami had wins over the # 3 and 4 teams in the final poll, Florida State and Penn State. That FSU game was AT Tallahassee and the 'noles had already gone to Ann Arbor and thrashed the Wolverines 51-31 earlier. Canes had a tougher schedule, so don't take issue with UM getting their NC as well, they EARNED IT!
The Canes deserved to lose to FSU, though. They were outplayed and only won because FSU choked on an easy chip shot field goal (even closer than an NFL extra point). A win is a win, but when you're arguing against another undefeated team, how you win matters. UW didn't need to get lucky in any of their wins.
the whammy in miami what a great game with the RIP Washington #59 sign and a bunch of cocky canes that where seeing cockeyed and crosseyed in the second half
3:26 - Emtman just manhandled two Offensive Linemen to force a fumble ... just amazing. Too bad he never took a break, he wore his body down from overtraining.
I do agree '94 PSU does tend to get overlooked due to Nebraska getting the MNC. It was really a shame we didnt have the BCS back in the 90s, we wouldnt have all these disputes. Purely from an offensive standpoint, yes PSU was incredible - Collins, Carter, and Brady led an unstopable offense. 63-14 over PSU??? Overall though, '91 UW had an average margin of +31.6 and '94 PSU had a margin of +26. And UW had a much tougher schedule - winning at Neb, at a 10-2 Cal team, and then destroying mich.
Maybe at the time they seemed to be, but 1971 Nebraska, 1972 USC, 1995 Nebraska, and 2001 Miami deserve some consideration too. And none of them shared the title.
I'll even concede the fact that overall Miami had bigger, faster, stronger athletes than we had at Washington (Generally speaking..because we did have a number of studs too) But we had WAY more heart for the fight. Not sure about the recent Dawgs, because they don't quite understand it yet, but we had a tradition at UDUBB, that said you are going to get hit in your mouth on every single play until A) You give up B) I'm dead or C) The game is over.
Greatest of all time. Im from Boston. I have no dog in the ncaa football fight. The UW team this year had the prototype for each position. Their o line was monstrous. Two quarterbacks with great arms and awareness. Explosive backs. OHHHHH AND THAT DEFENSE😂😂😂😂 Steve Emtman should have been illegal😂human cheat code. Everything just came together for this one team, this one year. They were good the years before and after too. Im just a college football fan in generak and i think they arenthe greatest team to ever play.
If my memory serves me correctly, Russell White also was playing for Cal that year, and IMO not many RB were better that year. I am truly surprised that he didn't have a better pro career. He was a beast.
I have proof was in 1994, 3 years removed from the 1991 season. Washington is on probation (93-94) with depleted talent and they managed to beat the crap out of a good college team that year Miami at the Orange Bowl. Well for 1991 is concerned Washington was down 21-9 at Nebraska late in the 3rd Q. and won the game 36-21. Meanwhile Miami plays Nebraska in Miami for the Orange bowl and beats them 22-0. I just wish they got to play each other back in 1991, it would have been a great game.
This is why the BCS was formed. Miami-Washington would have been one of the greatest games in NCAA history. Prediction: Washington 20, Miami 17 . . . then again, Miami 17, Washington 14. We'll never now. Too bad.
I do. Look at their point differential. They destroyed every team. They had the number 2 scoring defense AND number 2 scoring offense that year. If that same team had been called USC or Notre Dame, e.g., EVERYONE would say they were the best ever. Period.
One team that never gets any props for being a great team is 1986 Oklahoma. They arent in conversations like this because they were 11-1 and lost to Miami soundly 16-28 in sept in Miami. But if you look at their results, it is almost jaw-dropping. FIVE shutouts, won the orange bowl over Arkansas 42-8 (ark scored with like a minute left). They beat a good UCLA team 38-3. Won at Nebraska. Their offense averaged 42.3 ppg while their D gave up an insane 6.75 ppg, a +35.58. Wouldve killed '86 PSU.
@dodaddy72 Me too .....this is the best sports team I ever saw in my life !!! Im from Detroit , Mi and I watched this Rose Bowl. I watched Michigan run over every team we played at will all year. So the first play I was use't to Ricky Powers going off tackle for 8 -9 yards just to establish our dominate running game , first play vs Washington Ricky runs off tackle ....it looked like Star Wars the way the Huskies ran him down. That defense was like swarming bees on honey.
So later Billy Joe changed it to something like, "As long as we're playing for the national championship, the Rose Bowl is just fine with me." See, Billy Joe wanted there to be a "BCS"-type of arrangement in college football before there even was one!!
@seatowwwn206 Think of the 1993 Sugar Bowl. The Huskise would throw just as many blitz packages as 'Bama did and we know that their offensive line and QB could never pick blitzes up. In fact their blitz packages would force the Grazing Gringas AKA Miami cheerleaders to carry spatulas instead of pom poms to scrape GINA TORTILLA off the turf as the tough Huskie secondary sticks to Lamar Thomas and Keven Williams like glue just like they did to Desmond Howard whom nobody but the Huskies stopped.
very valid points made in arguing about 91 washington 95 nebraska 72 usc but to think that there only 2 teams in college football history that can hang with that 91 huskies team is down right ludicrous. there are plenty oy teams you guys are ommiting say for instance bear bryant's bama national title teams, lou holt's 88 nd team, joe pa's penn st title teams switzer ou title squad and here's one 4 the sake of the debate gene stallings 92 bama title squad who smacked the 'canes 4 their title.
Iowa Football graduates football players at rates higher than the student body. Furthermore Iowa's academic standards for their players is higher than it is for the student body, higher than Big Ten and NCAA requirements as well. Entrance requirements are also higher than NCAA standards.
There was no such thing as a "national championship game" in those days. The BCS didn't come around until several years later. Miami played Nebraska in the Orange Bowl while the Dawgs played Michigan in the Rose Bowl. All we have is speculation but I've ALWAYS been convinced, and ALWAYS will be, that had the BCS existed in those days the Dawgs would have won a head-to-head against the 'canes after the 1991 season and would have been national champions all by themselves. They were THAT good.
@lilzander84 We went to 3 straight Rose Bowls from 90-92 and then came to the Orange Bowl in 1994 and ended sugarcanes winning streak and could not be stopped by Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp. I think I remember them crying on the sidelines. No crying from the Dawgs. Just wins against ya in 1994 and 2000.
@getyoasshome Yes a couple of our players got caught holding a beer can. Miami players get arrested because they can't read the label on the beer can, lol Oh and rape, murder, armed robbery...do you want me to list them all? You really don't.
This is true the husky are a shadow of what they were but they are climbing back and closing the gap w/the other teams I figure 2013 will be the dawgs yr and end the Oregon snafu
There was a no MNC game, they just had bowls and voted for champs. Washington was the UPI/USA Today Champs and Miami was the AP champions. Miami played a multiple loss NU team and Michigan was ranked 4th and teh Dawgs DOMINATED them! How was Miami in championship game?
Yeah, but just about every OTHER poll that dealt with college football back then picked the HUSKIES as the #1 team after the bowls were over. The 'canes were a good team that year, but the Huskies would've kicked their *sses that year given the opportunity. Steve Emtman was the Brock Lesnar of college football back then. Huge, strong, and an absolutely unstoppable force on the defensive line. I can GUARANTEE you that the 'canes wouldn't have had anybody on their O-line whe could've stopped him.
All 3 of Miami's starting LBs went on to start in the NFL and 2 of them were either All-Pro or Pro Bowl players. How did Eminem do again? Bust? No more juicy juice and he flamed out. Nobody else was even relevant for the puppies in the NFL
Yeah I gotta say 1995 Nebraska is a bad matchup for Washington. I see Nebraska taking advantage of Washington's tendency to leave no safety in run coverage. Now Miami seems to be tailor made for Don James' Huskies. Yet Miami was always a tough matchup for Nebraska although the 94 Nebraska team did beat them in the Orange Bowl. Rock Paper Scissors
Technically, Washington should have 4 National Titles. A year or two ago we were finally recognized as the champs in 1960. If you look at all the polls, we should be National Champs in 1960, 1984, 1990, and 1991. But once again the NW gets no respect nationally. I think if we give Sark another few years its gonna be that way again. USC's on the outs, and the Ducks cant sustain their mediocre success. One day soon, all teams will bow down to Washington once again!
Oh and by the way... to basically end this argument, they decided to play a game in 1994 to see who was the best. And we beat the SH*T out of them...ending their NCAA record for home wins. Then, they decided to stock up and bring Ken Dorsey, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Clinton Portis, Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey and Ed Reed to Seattle in 2000 to reclaim their honor and they ot SPANKED!
What's your point? The huskies point differential for the season was the highest I've ever seen, made all the more amazing because it was a legit schedule, not padded with a bunch of cupcakes.
If you watch the game, you'll realize that UW was up 34-7 and then put in their scrubs. They also were practically on the goal line at the end of the game and chose to let time run out. It wasn't as close as the score. It most certainly was a dismantling.
You literally couldn't run or pass on them. The one catch Howard got was a 'throw it up and see how it goes' in this rose bowl. I am biased i was able to see this 1991 Huskies team 3 games at Stanford,Cal, and the Rose Bowl.
@uwdawg92 Michigan's offense was unstoppable all year...until it met your defense. My jaw about dropped watching the Washington D stuff, and I mean stuff Michigan.
My point? No point, just an observation. I think you are misreading me here. This team WAS dominant and I think would have beaten Miami had they played. '91 was just another unfortunate year when the obviously 2 best teams or even only 2 unbeaten teams didnt get a chance to play each other for the all marbles.
Um, get it right. A 5-point loss by Miami doesn't qualify as getting "spanked". But losing to Miami 65-7 in the Orange Bowl in 2001 does. By the way, I beleive Miami won the national title that year too. The Dawgs were just another victim along the way, and haven't done a damn thing since. Moral to the story? Don't try to run with the big dogs if you still piss like a puppy.
Miami didn't lose that year; however, other than the record, Maimi was inferior in just about all other aspects (other than the #1 AP poll). Less consensus and normal #1 votes. Far lower winning margin (300 ish vs 200 ish). Far less historically regarded. Less NFL picks. Lower rank in offense AND defense.
@MrPatchesPal 91 Washington is as good as 95 Nebraska due to how they massacred teams on their respective schedules and both have highly respected defenses
I feel blessed seeing this UW team 3 times. Against Stanford,Cal and then the Rose Bowl. Still my favorite college football team ever.
My brother was on this team - BEST memories so far for our family. And Mario Bailey was my first boyfriend... even though I was five years-old.
Iowa played you in the Rose Bowl of the previous season. We shit ourselves in the first half eventually going down 39-6 before we made a furious comeback to fall 46-34. We felt awful...

That's alright, We avenged this game the following year. 38-31 and a national championship in 1997 vs Washington State
The NCAA should have put Nebraska and Michigan in the game together. People wanted to see Miami and Washington. They robbed the fans of that chance.
5) Huskies had more champ polls (11 to 8) and more major poll votes (3 to 1)
6) Huskies faced stronger Michigan team.
Nebraska and USC were relatively close games too though.
Nice job against LSU last nite......respectable showing.
come on Dawgs, you finished in the top 5 and won the rosebowl just 8 years ago. Lets get it back!
even as a bruins fan i agree that sc team was beast. But now im a coug fan
I thought that was Mario Bailey. Plus, Mario Bailey is now a damn good coach for a high school in Seattle (the name escapes me at the moment).
Miami was not even close. The only common opponent was Nebraska, and when asked Tom Osborne said Miami was not even in the 'same league as Washington.
Miami would have been demolished by this team. Half of the Huskies ended up in the NFL, with Entmann the #1 pick.
question: was this before or after Tom Osborne's team got BLANKED in the Orange Bowl?
@@Straight0uttaCrofton the Orange Bowl literally started during the 4th quarter of this game.
Miami beat fsu,Penn state and Houston all those teams was top 10
Half the hurricanes offense was in the league and defense what’s your point
I think very few - if any - other teams in NCAA history could've beat the Dawgs this day. Maybe the 1995 Cornhuskers or 2001 Canes but damn this team was nails - on both sides of the ball.

How about the 65-7 absolute destruction of the little pups in Miami in 2001? 65 to 7!!! It was like men playing against little girls!
3:26 - Emtman just manhandled two Offensive Linemen to force a fumble ... just amazing. Too bad he never took a break, he wore his body down from overtraining.

Miami beats Nebraska in 94 they're the champions.
Maybe at the time they seemed to be, but 1971 Nebraska, 1972 USC, 1995 Nebraska, and 2001 Miami deserve some consideration too. And none of them shared the title.
Interesting that they include Sagarin's computer rankings, which are now used by the BCS.
I'll even concede the fact that overall Miami had bigger, faster, stronger athletes than we had at Washington (Generally speaking..because we did have a number of studs too) But we had WAY more heart for the fight. @63utuber the score was 34 - 7 before UW put in the second string in the 4th quarter.
UW gave up only 9.6 ppg on defense. Averaged 41.2 ppg and ranked 8th in SOS compared to 26th for Miami.
the heisman trophy winner caught 1 pass that day, 1
And we beat Miami at Miami in 1994, ending the home winning streak. Still mad about that aren't we UM, aren't we??
No. 65-7 in 2001. Nuff said.
very valid points made in arguing about 91 washington 95 nebraska 72 usc but to think that there only 2 teams in college football history that can hang with that 91 huskies team is down right ludicrous. there are plenty oy teams you guys are ommiting say for instance bear bryant's bama national title teams, lou holt's 88 nd team, joe pa's penn st title teams switzer ou title squad and here's one 4 the sake of the debate gene stallings 92 bama title squad who smacked the 'canes 4 their title.
Difference being an even weaker OU team actually DID kill PSU, 25-10, the previous season in the orange bowl.
U c that Husky linebacker at 6'2, 225. amazing how nowadays, that's barely a Strong safety size.
Iowa Football graduates football players at rates higher than the student body. Furthermore Iowa's academic standards for their players is higher than it is for the student body, higher than Big Ten and NCAA requirements as well. Entrance requirements are also higher than NCAA standards.
your brother and lincoln kenedy on the other side were the best O line ever and then there were two gaurds and a center
10 bass drums! god dammnnnn.
@eh3292
They were technically with the Big East in 1991 or wore them on their Jerseys.
They were THAT good.
miami won the title in 91
Zander Brown no, huskies won the coaches pole
@lilzander84 We went to 3 straight Rose Bowls from 90-92 and then came to the Orange Bowl in 1994 and ended sugarcanes winning streak and could not be stopped by Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp. I think I remember them crying on the sidelines. No crying from the Dawgs. Just wins against ya in 1994 and 2000.
@getyoasshome Yes a couple of our players got caught holding a beer can. Miami players get arrested because they can't read the label on the beer can, lol
Oh and rape, murder, armed robbery...do you want me to list them all? You really don't.
How many NCs do the pups have? 1??? And you shared it with Miami! LOL we have 5!
This is true the husky are a shadow of what they were but they are climbing back and closing the gap w/the other teams I figure 2013 will be the dawgs yr and end the Oregon snafu
shigeolincolntaco this year, 2016
We went to camp together.
1:26 Mario Bailey had an all american..... season...
Up until I saw that 2005 USC team, the 91 Huskies were the best I've ever seen....
You mean the 04 Trojans??
The 1994 Penn State team was the best ever.
please u guys couldn't play d nebraska would have drilled u guys!!!!!
2001 Miami Hurricanes, hands down
....
Nonpeon the huskies beat the 2001 canes lol!
emtman should have won the heisman that year.
about 10 years ago they kinda got screwed in a nc attempt.
Bo knows! Classy man...that Bo
Then, they decided to stock up and bring Ken Dorsey, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Clinton Portis, Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey and Ed Reed to Seattle in 2000 to reclaim their honor and they ot SPANKED!
beating miami from 94 to about 97 was nothing special
What's your point? The huskies point differential for the season was the highest I've ever seen, made all the more amazing because it was a legit schedule, not padded with a bunch of cupcakes.
Michigan needed more Tyrone Wheatley, less Ricky Powers. Fast forward one more year...
Instead of Nebraska, they should have let Washington and Miami battle for the national title
GENERALSPARTAN27 yeah, but I think we know who would win... 😂
@@FGxBeaver Miami
34 -14 over #4 is not "dismantles" ; 55 -19 over #2 is.
If you watch the game, you'll realize that UW was up 34-7 and then put in their scrubs. They also were practically on the goal line at the end of the game and chose to let time run out. It wasn't as close as the score. It most certainly was a dismantling.
It’s nice having the playoffs now. That way we don’t have to worry about this “shared title” garbage
You literally couldn't run or pass on them. The one catch Howard got was a 'throw it up and see how it goes' in this rose bowl. I am biased i was able to see this 1991 Huskies team 3 games at Stanford,Cal, and the Rose Bowl.
I saw this back then, they are gonna do this again. Go purple.
No, they both actually shared the title.
mohabugha yeah, but they would have crushed Miami
@@FGxBeaver BWAHAHAHAHAHA
@uwdawg92 Michigan's offense was unstoppable all year...until it met your defense. My jaw about dropped watching the Washington D stuff, and I mean stuff Michigan.
fine, the year after they lost to nebraska up unitl 97-98
Man those UW linebackers put the wood on people. They keep patting hoffman on the head after nailing him.
Don't try to run with the big dogs if you still piss like a puppy.
ok lets make this fair you can talk if you guys have won a national championship in the past 20 years. oh wait have you????
@oscarboy2323 o and i forgot ryan mcneil and darryl williams...2 more probowlers on D
Way back when the Huskies were relevant.
houndogforever what were you saying? Aren't we #4? Oh yeah, we are!
Bow Down to Washington
Miami didn't lose that year; however, other than the record, Maimi was inferior in just about all other aspects (other than the #1 AP poll).
Less consensus and normal #1 votes.
Far lower winning margin (300 ish vs 200 ish).
Far less historically regarded.
Less NFL picks.
Lower rank in offense AND defense.
@lilzander84 so did UW smart one
you know what alot of these players returned for the 92 season which was not as successful
@seattlefw190 01 Canes?
@MrPatchesPal 91 Washington is as good as 95 Nebraska due to how they massacred teams on their respective schedules and both have highly respected defenses
