  • How to make a beautiful silver "S - Link" necklace that also incorporates wooden beads. In this video I demonstrate how to create this unique necklace in easy to follow, step by step instructions. The S-link design is derived from nature, and has been used by artists for 1000s of years. The wire that you see me using in the video is 20 gauge nickel silver; when I make this piece in sterling silver wire, I use .035 sterling silver wire, soft, round. For the bridging link that I use to attach the s-links together, I use a piece of wire that is at least 4" long. The video also demonstrate how to construct the bridging link, and this link has the additional function of providing a way to add beads to the "S-Link" necklace.
The construction of the "S-Link" necklace requires the use of three pliers, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers and diagonal cutters. Each individual S-link is constructed from exactly a 2 inch length of silver wire.

Made a ton of hammered copper S links the other night just to practice with a different gauge wire. Now I can actually DO something with them. Never occurred to me to bridge them with a bead this way. Thanks so much!!

I'm ditching the necklace I started, and am going to make one like this gentleman is making. This is a super looking necklace and you make it look so simple. You really made the bead portion so much easier to make. Thank you for doing this!

I've just had another attempt at making this necklace. The first time, as with any new technique, wasn't too good. This time it is coming together beautifully - thank you so very much Ross.

The problem you are having is not an uncommon experience with the S-link & is easily addressed in my live class. I will, within the next month dedicate a blog article with photos that will explain this in detail. But, to try to help now, what causes this problem is a wide space in the center of the S-link. You need to bend the central inner part of the S against the outer curve of the S. This will eliminate the opening in the S-link. Keep watching my blog for more details & thanks for watching!

For the necklace that you saw me create in the actual video, I used 20 gauge wire. Some of my students in class (that is ongoing right now) are making it in 18 gauge wire and actually prefer the heavier wire, but others had difficulty, and have switched back to the 20 gauge.

great video, clear presentation of the project from start to finish. I made about 5-6 in copper now moved onto a silver project ( birthday project). The finished item looks great; made with crystal, antique wood and bone, and glass beads. Also learned plenty from your other projects...GS8

Hi - I was not very concerned with the direction of the spirals. Their random placement was not an issue for me. The diameter is a little under 1/8", as it is formed with the tip of my round nose pliers. Glad you decided to do this project - hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching and for your questions!

Thanks! I’m glad that you continue to view my videos. At this time I don’t offer my jewelry for sale.
The bridging link that I demonstrated in the video can be used to incorporate very large beads into the S-link necklace. I would experiment with the size of the bead to determine what looks good. A bead as large as the s-link itself, might not work as well because it might compete with the s-link. I’ve always have thought of link as the main theme of the necklace

Ross I made this today - Christmas - and while it is pretty, it is falling apart even as I hold it. Think maybe I should try this in 18 gauge, tighten up the S-link, and maybe wire wrap the bone pieces. Plus mine is getting tangled on itself. I'll try again, post it on my FB page, and tag you if it works. In the meantime, thanks for your great videos - you are an incredible artist - jewelry maker and watercolorist. Best.

For the necklace in this video, I used 20 gauge wire. Some of my students have made it in 18 gauge wire, as they prefer the heavier wire. Other students have difficulty with the heavier wire, and make the necklace with 20 gauge. Hope this helps!

Thanks very much for this video. I began beading and chainmaille a little while ago, but I started out using cheap wires which usually make me break out in a rash. I really want to start working with sterling silver but I don't know a lot about it. I have a question I would like to ask you. When using soft sterling silver, how can you strengthen the bridge link without hammering it as you did with the s-links?

hi, I do love your videos, you are about the best teacher I have ever seen on a video, I have tried 2 pairs of earrings and they were great. I have tried the S link necklace but the bones keeps on separating because of the open part of the S. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Okay - 8 months later and I'm ready to try this. A couple of questions, though. It looks as though you connected your links without regard for the direction in which the spiral goes. Is this intentional, or an oversight? Also, what diameter do you suggest for the eyes on the bones? Too small, no movement, too large might look funny? Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful knowledge so freely. You really do inspire!

I really want to harden my links but I don't have the proper tools... can I just use a normal hammer? or do I have to have a special hammer and anvil?

I use a chasing hammer and steel block to harden the links. The smooth surface gives the links a nice look.
