Then 10 minutes passed before the assistant had to SNEAK AWAY to call an ambulance. My brother is an addict. He started doing drugs when he was a teenager. Like Demi he tried to get sober in his 20s by staying off hard drugs and just drinking and smoking weed. It didn't work and soon he was back doing meth. He didn't overdose like Demi (thank god). His drug use came to a head when he physically assaulted my sister and threatened me with a knife when i stopped him. He had minimal jail time and afterwards entered rehab. He was in rehab for a year. The rehab he went to made him completely change his lifestyle. He couldn't smoke cigarettes or even cuss. When he got out he continued to be completely sober and cut ties with friends he had since he was a kid. It was hard but he's been sober for two years because he changed everything about his life. From the way Demi spoke in this interview I have no confidence in her so called sobriety. I don't know how people (her fans and family) can watch this interview and think she doesn't immediately need to be in rehab.

Agreed. She may have legitimate issues but she’s also pretty spoiled. She doesn’t understand the privileges and resources that she has at her disposal to help her. Most people do not have an assistant that’s going to walk into their apartment to save them from ODing. They don’t have access to luxury rehabs with 24/7 coaches to travel with to help keep them on the right path. Or a team of specialist doctors saving their lives when they slip up. This should tell everyone how little help the average addict has in our society. The average addict barely has the transportation to get to an AA meeting. Is bunking with three other addicts in a tiny room in a rehab house eating cereal for breakfast. Is being told ‘we don’t have an open bed right now’ for the tenth time while calling local hotlines even just trying to get into a rehab. This is the story of one very rich person with addiction, it’s not a documentary on addiction itself. Im not saying it doesn’t have its place but it could be very misleading to those who don’t know about an average person’s journey in trying to get sober.

That's really not necessarily true, that's a big assumption that 12 step programs push and 12 steps haven't been proven to get anyone sober with any more success rate than white knuckling it, weaning off, pharmaceutical replacement like methadone therapy, etc. It is possible to get to a point you're strong enough to just have a drink at dinner, have a joint, etc while staying away from hard drugs. Do I necessarily think that's a good idea for Demi, whose going through a hard time and had a heart attack and three strokes? No. Absolutely not. I don't even think this documentary should have been made, though I did watch it. It's like she thinks just because she made it out the 27 club she's okay. But to say all addicts must stay completely 100% sober or you can't live can sometimes even be counter productive and cause you to have much more intense relapses. Sometimes it's a lot healthier to just have smoke weed or have the occasional drink at dinner (provided alcohol isn't your drug of choice, which to be honest I think Demis always been using opiates and blaming it on alcohol).

If her management truly has her best interests at heart they should give her the space and peace to truly discover herself, she shouldn’t have her experiences packaged and sold and promoted. Watching her at a “premiere” for this documentary made me sad. She’s clearly still figuring things out and has to take some kind of position around having it figured out to “sell this story.”

They get all kinds of assistance aide to get help, sometimes even more than everyday people who are struggling, like a single mom for example, or rape victims. While I believe that they should be able to tell their story in an effort to help others or to get their truth out I don't think they should be allowed to monetize it in any way. In less than one months time after 6 years sober. That’s a HARD FALL off the wagon. She’s beautiful and talented and funny and I’ve actually learned a lot about my own addiction/sobriety by observing her actions. I actually got sober after listening to her song “Sober” about a million times while high as hell thinking “this is seriously the soundtrack of my life and its fucking sad and painful” but when she overdosed (and I work in medicine, I knew how close to death she was by what was being said in the news) I literally put the booze and drugs down. And you’re right - she’s surrounded by enablers. I’m scared for her because I believe if she relapses again she won’t survive...like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson who also were surrounded by enablers.

I am sorry that the people in your life did not support you, and I am proud of, and thankful for your incredible personal strength. When you told your story, I saw what you felt and I believe you. Because I feel that same way when I tell my own story. Like for one small millisecond everything in you stops because you’re in so much pain you forget how to breathe, your brain forgets how to function, and your heart forgets how to beat. Then you’re left with the overwhelming urge to cry, and the feeling of your rib cage begin slowly torn open from the inside. I’ll tell you the same thing I told the police when they did not believe me, and the same thing I tell myself when the memory becomes too much. You did not ask for it. You did not do it to yourself. You did not deserve it. You are not to blame.

This one of incredibly difficult for me, being in recovery myself from those exact drugs and having to safe my fiancé multiple times before he ended up passing away.. Watching everyone laugh while she forgot the words to her own song was f**ked up straight up. I am honestly worried about her, because she’s just not ready to stop.. and when she is ready (again) because relapse happens.. it might just be too late. Fentanyl has taken the opportunity of deciding when to stop. I’m in a small city in Canada, and we’ve lost more people to fentanyl OD then covid in Canada. She’s just not ready, and it’s very clear. Which is scary as hell! A heart attack/3 strokes wasn’t enough to keep her straight, and those types are lifers I’m sorry. I’m a huge Demi fan, I mean damn her song “sober” literally made me come clean about my use AGAIN and I’m on my 3rd year sober this June. But I am scared for her

Same, I’ve been in sobriety (off IV fentanyl) for several years and lost my best friend 3 years ago to an overdose. She was “only smoking weed” too, and everyone was satisfied with that bc she wasn’t using heroin anymore (after a long battle using)
I worry for demi after seeing that documentary. She doesn’t seem to really understand what addiction means, and I also think the people around her continue to enable her by not setting clear boundaries and expectations about what it means to be sober either. Not that it is their disease to control or dictate, but they’re going along with the narrative of California sober is “sober enough” bc it’s better than X and seem to be absolving her of consequence and accountability for her continued use. It allows Demi to use and stay in denial about being able to successfully.
How many times in the rooms do we hear “i thought i could control drinking/smoking socially or in moderation” before they hit their rock bottom and have to totally give up control? This is denial that anyone who’s dealt with addiction can spot a mile away. Makes me sad to see.

I don’t want to sound like such a bummer, but she’ll end up right back where she was.. like you sad once you’ve been there you can just spot it.

"California sober" actually works really well for my boyfriend, and it has for the past three years. He went through extensive childhood trauma and abuse. As a result, he is diagnosed with BPD and a side helping of ADHD. He's gone through therapy, holds down a good job, and works on himself, but he also smokes weed to manage the worst of his symptoms.
At first, I was resistant, because I was bought into the NA mentality of total and complete abstinence. He tried that lifestyle for a while, but it just didn't work. He was all over the place and barely functioning due to his mental health conditions. It was miserable for everyone involved. The weed evens him out and mitigates the worst of his anxiety.
He could start taking ADHD medication and anti-anxiety medication, but seeing as methamphetamine and benzos were his substances of choice when he was in full addiction, he doesn't want to take the risk. California sober works for him, and it works for me as the person who spends the most time with him. Maybe it will work for Demi Lovato too.

@@bwoww13 It's not. NA has an incredibly high relapse rate and so do most traditional rehab programs. In fact, new research is showing that certain substances such as psilocybin, DMT, and MDMA (all currently classified as illegal drugs) are likely to be far more effective treatments for addiction when paired with supportive counseling.
The reason Demi is probably going to relapse (I agree with Shallon) is because it's readily apparent that she has done absolutely zero introspection, therapy, and the hard work that goes with it to confront why/how she became an addict in the first place/to change her mindset and lifestyle. It's not because she is smoking weed.
Demi's problem, is that she is smoking weed and drinking without any internal mental shift. That's why it is going to continue to be a slippery slope for her.

She admitted that she slipped with alcohol first and then kept going downhill in a 4 month span. She wrote her song sober and let people know "Hey I lost it I'm struggling" she literally said she's struggling. I don't see her as lying at all. Just because she didn't elaborate on the drug even tho in the song it talks about cold sweats and shakes like that's not coming from alcohol so it implied other drugs. She has been very vocal and upfront about the fact that she suffers from an eating disorder and the fact that she was watched like a hawk on what she and others around her were eating is what made her so depressed that it DID lead her back to the drugs. Unfortunately the sad thing with Demi and other celebrities is they aren’t just another employee in a large corporation like most of us are they are the product that the company makes a living off of,they are that refrigerator going down that line and if something is broken the whole line stops and everyone lines around that refrigerator trying to figure out what the problem is, not because they necessarily care but because they know that’s what they are getting paid to do and if they don’t have that refrigerator they don’t have a business. That’s what’s happening with Demi and other celebrities most of the time their team is just trying to figure out a way to fix them just enough so that they can still perform and still make the money to pay them but they don’t actually care what the underlying problem is they just wanna make sure that she’s good enough to sign their paychecks even if that is sneaking her alcohol or drugs, holding your hand to make sure she goes to the meeting she needs to go to. It’s kind of gross if you think about it no human being should be treated like a cash cow.

I have never done drugs or drank. But I did have a self-harming addiction AND disordered eating. The self-harming addiction was like a drug. I'd go deeper in my arms, moved to my upper arms or thighs, to get the same feeling. It wasn't until I was getting stitched up in the hospital when I knew I had a problem. And I had dragged my friends down with me. My family didn't know because I hid it from them. I had friends who were becoming emotionally exhausted with me because I'd always talk about things triggering me. It wasn't until I got out of a toxic relationship, took a step to identify all the toxic things in my life (and take them OUT), and REALLY felt like I wanted to not have this addiction anymore was when things got better. To me, Demi doesn't want to get better. The mere fact she had everything she needed to not relapse and she still did, shows she didn't want this. She might not ever want it. She always comes out with a documentary and then an album after some tragedy in her life. I admire that she's "open" and "honest". However, if she flat out said, "I'm an addict and I need help", then I'd 100% believe her. But now, it's like that saying "fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice, shame on me."
