      Back in the mid 80's - early 90's I rode a bicycle a lot. For three years it was my transportation was because of a suspended license for one year and two additional years because insurance was too high. Years later when I got my license back I rode 26 miles every other day. I always rode with the flow of traffic and had a headlight and taillight for at night. It can be scary because unless you have mirrors, which I didn't, you don't know what's going on behind you unless you look back for a couple seconds, hoping no one rear ends me which never happened. I see people ride against traffic all the time, but what they don't realize is that people in cars coming towards them don't see them until just a couple hundred feet or so, then having to swerve into the oncoming lane causing problems. I would never ride on the streets today because of the amount of cars, trucks etc., out there and just like riding a motorcycle "which I have" people don't look for bicyclists.

    As a lifelong Cyclist myself it annoys me when I see bike-riders doing twatish things on the roads, because they get us all a bad name, and because it happens so often I can understand why car drivers don't like us.
    I am also an HGV Driver, and last week for a sustained period of time I was behind two bike-riders (not Cyclists - there is a difference) who were weaving all over the road, through oncoming traffic, onto the path and back again without checking over their shoulders once. Then they were back in front of me for a while, with their complete lack of lane control, no consideration for anyone else, and generally just being idiots. I thought "do you really want to be riding like twats in front of an eighteen tonner on a busy main road?" It was only the presence of mind of the other road users around them that avoided a serious incident.
    So yes I can see why us Cyclists get bad publicity, because people think we are all the same as these idiots and the countless others who are like them.

      @@busog97641 As a sensible, Highway Code adherent cyclist since the 1970s, there was a time when I thought that it was only a small minority of idiots who gave the vast majority a bad name. By the time I'd reached the year 2000, it had become apparent that it was actually the other way around. The vast majority of cyclists give the law-abiding tiny minority a bad name. Shame on all of them - plus shame on our police for not enforcing the law (although, outside of London they don't have a budget for it) and shame on our education system for allowing several generations of kids to grow up thinking that the law of the road doesn't apply to riding a bike.

    • @Teapot-Dave
      @Teapot-Dave 2 года назад +18

      @@jeffknight904 Same here. When I was at High School in the 1970s we were not allowed to ride our bikes to school until we had passed the Cycling Proficiency Test, and only then were we given our highly-prized "Bike Permit" (a piece of paper in a plastic wallet about the size of a playing card) and the number of a designated parking space in the school bike rack (mine was C2)
      I still ride to the principals we were taught back then (Highway Code), and still proudly have my badge and certificate, because it was a real sense of achievement to have earned them.
      But like you I got caught-out, because I thought that everyone else would ride to the same standard, and it comes as a bit of a shock when you realise that you are in the minority. Even now when I am approaching another person on a bicycle, I make a quick assessment on whether they look like they are in control and know what they are doing (Cyclist), or if they look a bit unpredictable and dodgy to be around (bike-rider), and it has always stood me in good stead so far.
      Maybe we are the last of our kind. I hope not and I have certainly taught my son the "old principals" in the hope that they will continue for a while yet.

    Can someone explain what this was all about.? I saw a cyclist overtake another cyclist who was filming it. A car was stationery waiting to pull out. Cyclist goes to central reservation and crosses road. Cyclist cycles down road on cycle path on other side of road. As far as I am aware cycle lanes are bi-directional. Couldn't decipher the comments of vlogger. I was expecting the first car the white one to chase the overtaking cyclist and do something to that cyclist. So, what happened..?

He purposely moved out into the middle of the road when he saw me. I didn't move over...but he sure did when he realised he played chicken with the wrong person.
