Grand Admiral Thrawn is the best character in Star Wars. Every word he speaks leaves me inspired and with goosebumps on my skin. His brilliant and insightful speeches make Palpatine and Vader look like meek armatures in the art of villainous monologues.
Also, this whole time I was wondering why Tarkin had no lines. Then he finished the video with those iconic, chilling words. In a vacuum, a calm, almost pleasant sentence, but one that carries a horrifying context when spoken by the commander of the Death Star. The simple phrase that sends a chill down your spine and will cost millions if not billions of lives: "You may fire when ready".

Thrawn if he was tasked with guarding the Death Star plans:
"The rebels, including the daughter of the project lead, have launched an attack on the engineering team behind the weapon's construction. Galen Erso, admitted to treason when confronted by Director Krennic. The message he sent must be something that compromised the Death Star. We should analyse the plans and search for any kind of weakness."
*A battle breaks out on Scarrif while Thrawn and several engineers are analyzing the schematics.*
"Galen Erso betrayed the Empire and now the rebels are attacking the facility that holds the plans for the super weapon he designed. The only logical conclusion is the Rebels must need the Death Star technical schematics to capitalize on Galen's betrayal. Upload the plans to one of the Star Destroyers in orbit. Once the plans are received have them jump to the Death Star and deliver the plans to the battle station. Erase any and all copies of the plans outside of the station, and let the Rebels try to assault our most powerful weapon (if they even figure out where the plans are).
TLDR, just have Thrawn manage everything essential to the empire and Palpatine's reign will last forever.

But now that I've properly read the original take on the character... he's just breathtaking. The brief discussions between Thrawn and Pellaeon were such a great way of exploring the tactical genius of the man, from the first line to his last breath in the story. Thrawn is so fun, not only for his lack of moral qualms, but his blatant disregard for the Emperor. He isn't unsettling in the way the Emperor is, he isn't a broken man like Vader. He's simply, and wholly, a tactical mastermind with a vision for the galaxy.

Both Tarkin and Thrawn are brilliant minds but you might want to reconsider the line about no combat skills. Tarkin's younger years are explored in a novel, were he grew up mostly in a jungle learning to hunt, fight and survive against all manner of beasts, creatures and other dangers. He destroyed an entire horde of ape like monsters by manipulating their leader and beta, forcing them to clash in a show of dominance, killed them both and then forced the rest of the horde from their ancestral home all by himself. Tarkin is not the kind of guy who likes to get his hands dirty but he is possibly the most ruthless being in all of Star Wars behind Palpatine. Just because he chooses not to fight doesn't mean he can't.

Especially when he uses your own super weapon to destroy not just you, but also the base you're standing on.
Anyway, considering how the Rebels Season 3 finale demonstrated a difference in priorities between Tarkin and Thrawn (Tarkin demanded that the Rebel leadership at Atollon be captured alive, whereas, Thrawn never truly believed the idea to be feasible, despite complying with the demand), I feel as if the writers are setting up the groundwork for a Season 4 rivalry between Tarkin and Thrawn.
Could the reason for Thrawn's absence from the original trilogy be due to Tarkin's growing paranoia and scheming?

a great tactician creates plans, a good tactician recognises the soundness of a plan presented to them, a fair tactician must see the plan succeed before offering approval. Those that have no tactical ability may never understand or accept it, nor such people understand or accept the tactician. To those without that ability, those who possess it are a mystery, and when a mind is too deficient in understanding, the resulting gap is often filled with... resentment.
Military leadership is a journey not a destination, it is continually challenged and must continually improve itself a new against fresh obstacles. there is satisfaction in defeating an enemy, but one must never allow oneself to become complaced.
There is always more enemies to be identified, faced and vanquished.
I want you to know failure utter defeat and that it is I who delivers it crushing down upon you. now, let us proceed.
once a certain levels have been reached there is no need to prove leadership or competence. a person with such power is accustomed to having every word carefully considered and every whim treated as an order and all who recognise that power know to bow to it. few have the courage or foolishness to resist.

Whilst I would place Thrawn's tactical genius over Tarkin's, I wouldn't say Tarkin is only a good tactician. He was an excellent tactician, and a reasonably fair military commander. Again, not on the level of Thrawn, but he commanded the same kind of loyalty borne of true admiration, and the kind of results that made him formidable.
The only significant difference was that whilst Thrawn was known to be able to discern enemy tactics via art work and an opponents mannerisms, Tarkin read opponents through their actions and reputation, and employed a ruthless and direct approach to battle that kept his opponents off balance.
They're both competent, just in different ways. Too often in the Empire there were leaders who got by on prestige, whilst those like Thrawn, Piett, and Tarkin got by on skill.

That's exactly where Thrawn and Tarkin differ, especially in the Thrawn Novel. Where Tarkin is slightly less able than Thrawn in military tactical prowess, Tarkin knows how to play the political scene much more effectively e.g. Taking control of the Death Star despite Krennic building it.

"the art of war is of vital importance to the state. It's a road to safety or to ruin. It's a subject inquiry which can on no account be neglected." Sun Tzu the art of war, very first lines.
Why did the empire loose despite it having such excellent military minds, borderline limitless rescources and personal? They lost because they were not fighting for the "state", they were fighting for their egos. They were motivated by greed and vanity and pride.
The rebels fought with such strong will, such patience, such admirable skill and courage because they had two things in sufficient amounts that the empire did not have in sufficient amounts: humility and faith in ordinary people's liberties. They were, as Ahsoka put it in TCW "fighting for freedom". And people who fight for freedom are naturally going to be seen as glorious because they were fighting for the people's well-being, because they believed in the people, the emperor feared the people because the people could take away his power, and as we all know Palpatine has an "all who gain power are afraid to loose it" mentality.
I don't like him, but I respect Thrawn because his ultimate loyalty was (In Legends at least) to the Chiss ascendancy. He did what he did out of desire to protect his people from the evils in the unknown regions which he believed only a fully militarised galactic power, could defend against, and as evidenced by the yhuza zhong, he was at least partially right. However his proud belief that he alone needed to rule the galaxy for that to happen, and his naivety, led to his downfall at the hands of Rouke.
RIP Miththrawndoo, you may have been a ruthless, merciless, egotistical, pessimistically ambitious bastard, but you were a brave, brilliant, loyal bastard who taught the galaxy the painful lessons it needed to learn to defend itself.
Sometimes the most needed lessons to be learnt require the uncomfortablest of learning environments.

I think he is the main reason why the rebels in Roque one are so scared to fight against the empire. The battle of Scarif was the first major victory for the rebels. Up to that point they suffered defeat after defeat after defeat by the empires most dangerous admiral. I believe he is beating the shit out of the alliance until all they can do is pray to the force, hoping for a miracle. And they get their wish, i think Thrawn will eather be betrayed by his subordinates (jealous little racists) or leave the empire because of the death star.

No he isn't, Walker. He's still alive in both canon and EU.
The canon 'ending' so far for Thrawn is that he left into the unknown regions with the remainder of the Imperial remnants after RotJ.

Am I the only one that gets chills when watching this masterpiece? The music score, Thrawns delicious words dripping in your ears, and the different mix of cinema blending into it all so very beautifully. DuduFilms has more talent in their fingertip then most of Hollywood put together. Here's hoping we see the Sith Mouse and the deathstar known as Disney fall under its own weight and relinquish control back to people who care about this great Franchise and its fanbase.

The musical score with thrawn's words sprinkled in was the perfect crescendo of emotion here, the utter weight of the imperial battery ripping into the rebels shields, the utter ruthless of an overwhelming force up against a fleet a fraction of the firepower. And then there's the background understanding at the sheer loss of life happening within these events, entire civilizations wiped out in the vacuum of space. The only thing that kept the rebels alive was the utter lack of decent leadership within their ranks, because what we have here is a mere glimpse of what happens when the empire actually decides to pay attention to a threat effectively-and it's utter ruination man.

Empire - "Send a fleet to deal with the rebels, good, now monitor transmissions" etc
Rebellion - "SCATTER THE FLEETS SCATTER THE FLEETS SCATTER THE FLEETS SCATTER THE FLEETS SCATTER THE FLEETS SCATTER THE FLEETS"

Thrawn would have picked apart the entire rebellion one by one, it would have not mattered if Luke Skywalker would have discovered his abilities or not, cause no rebel alliance would have been left. So the ghost crew I guess did took out the greatest hurdle that had one of the biggest impact in rebellion actually succeeding.

These structures and philosophies of these famous quotes is really awe-inspiring I'm glad you presenting these through the Star Wars Mythos; thank you so much for these insights that reflect the stolen structure to the structures of militaries, kingdoms, and nations in the past, present, and the near future.

This also shows why politicians should never have any kind of authority or strategic influence in a military.
