Zilla got so much head trauma in the movie he is about as cognizant as the drinker himself yet he just kind of roars and swims away like nothing ever happened. And what about all of the giant monsters from the last zilla movie that pledged their loyalty to him as if he were their king? Guess they just wanted to see his rule end asap. And also when kong should've buried the axe (made out of zillas fin somehow) into his head an explosion happened instead of zillas instant death. If anyone put enough thought into this movie and pointed out everything wrong with it the review would be longer than the movie itself.
only for the godzilla and kong fans that were already invested though, not really everyone. I hope you guys realize how expensive making a movie like this is and making a good or just storyline for the whole movie instead of like 30% of the movie can go a long way to get people to check it out.
@@After.Heartache Like I said, if you already dont care about zilla and kong theres nothing else that can be done. I rather they keep it a solid small plot than a bloated confusing mess.
As someone that was stationed on an aircraft carrier. Thank you for sparing a thought for our expendable lives during a giant monster battle. Lost too many good friends via spontaneous lizard gorilla brawls.
do you REALLY want 2hrs of fight scene? it's like having sex all day long, sounds nice in your head, but 2 hrs in and you just want a shower and a nap like an old man. they need to build up and pace out the fight scenes SOMEHOW. the human stuff should probably be focused on hyping up the fights and providing breaks between them. trying to make the humans "relatable" characters with tragic backstories and deep motivations is the problem, you look at old monster movies, the humans are random military dudes and families not doing much but reacting to monster stuff. The best instance of the humans being actual characters of any sort is in Gamera movies where there's this bizarre "Gamera, friend of all children" thing going on that works due to the sheer absurdity; his theme song is a bunch of kids singing this happy (and creepy) kindergarten tune, its great.
They should have made the monsters the main focus from the beginning. The human characters are often really dull and boring. Like, in kotm, there's godzilla and ghidorah fighting and it suddenly cuts to the boring mom character running around on the ground doing a "heroic sacrifice" or some shit. Just ruins the whole pace of the fight. And the fight itself wasn't all that great either. That said I still firmly believe that a talented crew can make a compelling story and characters you care about while also having giant monsters fighting. Like, maybe the destruction caused by the monsters fighting could lead to different groups some wanting to destroy the monsters and some seeing them as forces of nature that we have to learn to live with. Maybe the humans try and succeed in killing a monster only for it to lead to catastrophic consequences because of a massive gap in the food chain. You could explore all kinds of interesting concepts with these instead of the man vs nature theme they always use in the most shallow way imaginable.
The fact that Godzilla and Kong move slowly most of the time is one of the things about their biology that actually makes perfect sense. When you're unbelievably huge, there's no reason to expend a ton of energy when there's no threat.
My dad actually said the reason Kong even made it since the first fight, was because of his flexibility, other monsters and Godzilla have really big and heavy bodies, and Kong has way more flexibility than others.

What a disgrace to 1 of the most iconic Monsters of all time.
@Marshal Red I really don't think the movie goes that deep, or should. These big monsters have been around much longer than that. Notably , Godzilla reflected the use of America of atomic weapons. In effect the USA created Godzilla. And on the same note , It was capitalistic forces that sought to enslave King Kong for their profit in1933. Neither monster can be attributed to China. , but IMO, Chinese monkey slaves created out of the ruling lizards of the USA in the way the world works now , does have some appeal.
That's all the movie should be. Just have to have some bullshit to set it up. Could it be better? maybe.... but to quote a confused, yet wildly wise Hulk: "but...Big Monster?!?"
"It's kinda weird how they move in ponderous slow motion under normal circumstances, but when it's time to fight, they suddenly become as fast and agile as a pair of wild dogs." *Drinker has clearly never seen a punch up between two drunk, middle aged Yugoslavs* .
The decision for changing the tempo honestly has a reason to it. This is traditionally applied by japanese filmmakers when it comes action oriented kaijuu movies that is still practiced till these days. Ultraman series for instance, still uses this technique. Slowmo only to emphasize on their size, wide angles to assess their surrounding. And when the illusion that they are big is finally delivered, they go all out with the fight with having no need to maintain the slowmotion, just so that they could deliver a thrilling action
I think this is easily the best movie of the year. No pretentious politics, no pseudo-deep plot, just a bunch of over the top fight scenes that were fun and had lots of things exploding.
Kaiju fans didn't come for an arts movie or something on par with the Godfather. We came to watch monsters beat the crap out of each other and humans getting stepped on in the process.
I haven't seen this one yet, but in The King of Monsters, they didn't step on enough humans. Seriously, I hated the people at the center of that movie's shitty family drama so much, had one of the monsters stepped on and killed that whole family in the first act, it would have been a better film. And they had Charles Dance... Why wasn't he the main villain?!

The best thing this movie did was remember both Godzilla and Kong are more than just giant monsters. They're characters, and it shines through practically each and every single moment they're on screen. From the emotions they display on their faces to Kong speaking... it's just fantastic. I'm glad that had been carried over from KOTM, we really needed to see more of their personalities on display.
I just watched and at the end I thought “you know, they made the evil guy a little too over the top but he actually had a pretty good point. Imagine a world in which Superman is a chaotic neutral, lex Luther becomes the good guy”
Using King Ghidorah’s remains obviously wouldn’t end well, but the movie treats simply wanting to make a weapon that can face the Titans on even terms as if it’s inherently wrong.

First 24 hour movie marathon I ever sat through was Godzilla movies. They are so campy and dumb, but something about Godzilla just really captured my heart. The only things I care about in these movies are the giant monster fights. And honestly, the design for Legendary's Godzilla is awesome. Probably my favorite rendition of him so far. To be fair, The Drinker does make a few good point, even running with the idea of this just being a dumb, fun, monster movie. Some narrative stakes, while not always necessary, would have been nice to add a bit of context to the fight itself and might have made the tact on human moments a bit more entertaining to sit through. Also, if the Drinker is correct in his observation about Godzilla and Kong not taking any noticeable damage or injuries during their fight, then I sadly have to say that is a strike against the movie. Have the fun of watching a big monster fight is see how messed up the monsters get wailing on each other while they keep fighting through their injures. It adds tension as well as a visual indicator at who has the upper hand in the moment and in what way. With all that said, I'm sure Godzilla V. After a ridiculous amount of media whether it be movies or video game that tries too hard to appear deep and overall create a terrible story as a result of trying to be deep, something like this was needed. We just needed something that both the product and the audience knew it was gonna be cheesy and I’m glad this exists.
It's basically a Smash battle between Donkey Kong had King K Rool, people don't play their games to learn the depth and complexity of their relationship. They play because their games are silly fun between a fat croc who stole an ape in a necktie's bananas, that is how deep their story is.
Indeed. Pure escapism is becoming increasingly rare these days, when every movie has to push some political agenda, or show how sexist, racist, and homophobic you are and why you should be ashamed of yourself even though you’ve never done anything to harm minorities, women, or the LGBT community. Many people go to films to actually escape from the real world, of only for a brief moment. Godzilla vs. Kong offers that escape. It’s just an entertaining fight between the two most famous movie monsters in cinema. People just wanted to see them fight, and that’s what they got.
I mean.....I guess it’s not to deep but their is character progression in it. This coming from someone who loved that movie, there’s definitely some there but it’s not like 800 pg novel deep it’s more a natural flow of characters at the end.

@@DenerWitt I want there to be stakes in the fight, Kong got his shoulder dislocated and without knowing anything about anatomy he just crushed his shoulder into a building *without toppling it mind you* and completely fixes himself and godzilla scratched up Kong to high hell and they just kind of brushed it off. When I saw multiple ships get trashed I was thinking they're going to address that, but NOPE!
The problem with focusing on characters is that you get less of what you actually want: Monkey and Lizard fighting each other.
Millie and the gang could have been cut out. We coulda got more about Sarazawa instead and much else.
If you want that then your probably a very shallow person.
do you REALLY want 2hrs of fight scene? it's like having sex all day long, sounds nice in your head, but 2 hrs in and you just want a shower and a nap like an old man.
they need to build up and pace out the fight scenes SOMEHOW. the human stuff should probably be focused on hyping up the fights and providing breaks between them. trying to make the humans "relatable" characters with tragic backstories and deep motivations is the problem, you look at old monster movies, the humans are random military dudes and families not doing much but reacting to monster stuff. The best instance of the humans being actual characters of any sort is in Gamera movies where there's this bizarre "Gamera, friend of all children" thing going on that works due to the sheer absurdity; his theme song is a bunch of kids singing this happy (and creepy) kindergarten tune, its great.
@@slenderman3310 So having fun is being a shallow person? You must be fun at parties.

The best thing this movie did was remember both Godzilla and Kong are more than just giant monsters. -The deaf girl is Kong's best friend and communicate with Kong and she's like Toph from Avatar The Last Airbender who can sense through the ground but instead of blind, she's deaf.
Meanwhile, everyone in Team Godzilla is totally useless.

The only things I care about in these movies are the giant monster fights. And honestly, the design for Legendary's Godzilla is awesome. Probably my favorite rendition of him so far.
Kong's okay too I guess, but giant lizard with atomic breath is just so much cooler than giant gorilla with... slightly above-average intelligence for a gorilla.

I mean, it's in the name "Critical *drinker* "
Kong is an entertaining move, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't point out its short coming or demand more from out big, dumb, kaiju fight movies.

Minus the subtle commentary of the 60s showa era films.
