I can attest to this upgrade. Before, it seemed I was replacing rotors all the time and I'm a conservative driver. Then in 2017 I did this, and when I last looked at the rotors a month or so ago, and they still look new with no visible wear - 7 yrs later in 2024. Best upgrade I ever did!
@@azorianification I have the stock 16 x 7, 5-spoke rim. I watched another video on doing the upgrade and that person had the same rim. Said it fit without any issues. If not, It's a great excuse to get new rims.
Great job, very informative. Do you tow with your tacoma? I have 01 taco and tow quite often up to 3500 lbs. What difference did you notice with the braking when towing?
Thanks. I don’t tow but there is a noticeable difference now when I have a lot of weight in the bed. I went with the Oem pads but you might be even more performance with an aftermarket tundra pad as well
Does the pedal feel mushy because it's still on OE master cylinder? Have you tried panic stopping on it yet to see if it flows enough fluid to brake well?
It feels the same to be honest. I still need to flush and refill the brake fluid. I would imagine that will make a noticeable difference since I’m overdue. I can lock up the wheels if needed
Since you’ll be removing them, this would be a good time to upgrade to Stainless steel lines. As for the hardlines, I’m not sure if you can reuse the old ones or bend them to work. Replaces are cheap enough. I wouldn’t want to reuse old brake parts if you’re going to replace everything.
I just did the 13WL brake up grade on my 2002 4runner 2wd with stainless steel lines. Yea the pedal is a bit soft after the break in procedure. Did bleeding the whole system bring your pedal back any better?
I don’t believe you can do this swap with 15s. I’d suggest an upgrade to 16in. They will even clear the stock wheels to give you an idea of what you could upgrade to. Sticking with the stock OEM brakes just isn’t worth it when you compare the prices between stock vs tundra.🍻
Literally did this to my first day in Tundra. Replaced the front calipers and now I have zero brake pressure. I bled my brakes and I put the brakes on the right sides and nothing. Not sure what's going on
@@azorianification Yes I am. I'm baffled at this point. I've bled my brakes like 30 times already and still zero pressure. It builds up when my truck is off but as soon as I turn it on all the pressure goes away

Why does it say great cheap upgrade, this makes me mad, I went in to the shop thinking $200-$300 is cheap upgrade for red bigger calipers and got estimates with $1,200 for the custom bigger calipers only for the front since they are custom that’s no damn cheap upgrade 😂

Another satisfied customer 😂🍻
I am going to do this same upgrade in the fall. I really like the look of the red calipers. Thank you for sharing all the parts and information.
The red has really grown on me. What wheels do you currently have on your 1st gen?

Perfect. What after market wheels are you considering? Going with a stockish tire size or getting something bigger?
Red looks sick
Thanks! Easily 10+ hp 🍻
Red calipers look great! Excellent job!!
Thanks. I was a little shocked when I first took them out of the box. 😂 They look great now with the contrast of the darker wheels
Great vid. Tfs.
Glad you found it useful

I wonder if this would all work and be similar with a 1st gen 4runner
I don’t see why it wouldn’t. They share many of the same components
I see that the kit you posted said its for the 4runner, is it the same for tacoma?
I’m not 100% certain but I would think they share the same front end parts like brakes.
Does the pedal feel mushy because it's still on OE master cylinder? Have you tried panic stopping on it yet to see if it flows enough fluid to brake well?

Are the new hard/soft lines required for the tundra calipers? Or can the stock ones work?

What size bore is your master cylinder in Your Tacoma?
Still using the stock master cylinder

How old is your brake fluid?
Another great video. Keep it up!! 👍 👍

Love the vid! How much did this upgrade cost?
About $600. Worth every penny
My first gen has stock 15in wheels will do you think these brakes would clear or would I have to upgrade to 16s or 17s?

Was that a red top SR20det?
I’d have to rewatch the video but it’s possible there may have been a shot of a couple of SRs I have in the background
Good eye
What did you do to the rear drum brakes ? Oem ?
Besides a refresh, I left them stock. In the future I may upgrade them from drum brakes to disc brakes. For now the Tundra brakes do most of the work

@ThangNguyen-xl2vk where did you buy the brake line set?

The 13WL are 231mm and the 13WE are 199mm from my understanding.
do you still have rear drum brakes?
I do. I haven’t decided what to do with the rears. Do you still run drums in the rear?
@@azorianification yes I am looking to upgrade my front brakes soon and thank you for your response brother✌
Nice. You’ll be happy with the tundra upgrade if you go that route 🍻
What condition do you drive in. Everything is heavily corroded.
It’s very light surface rust. For a 22 year old Tacoma, this frame is in great shape.
will these clear 16inch wheels?
Most 16” wheels will fit without a spacer. The 1st gen tundra came with 16” from the factory. Are you running OEM wheels, or aftermarket?

Nothing weird about that. I’m always watching videos about cars I don’t currently own or never will. 🍻
