    I love how there's no B.S. in this video. Really useful for those of us that are already somewhat familiar with 3D design, and are just trying to transition over to fusion.

    Great tutorial. It's very important to understand the F360 workflow required to build your model before you start, otherwise you can end up "over-sketching".

    Man, I cannot tell you how much more intuitive your videos are compared to the fusion training material. I'm digging the crap out of this Fusion thing lately and moving out from Sketchup to 'Big Boy' CAD software really makes me feel like I'm playing mini pro fabricator.
    Love your work, envy your workshop, keep up the fantastic videos.

    about those little thingy left at 5:30 , you could just have included those radius in your sketch when you made the cut at 3:20 and you could have also only made one circular pattern at the end. For a part that simple it doesn't really matter but when you get into more complicated ones, you want to keep the step used to get the part minimal so it can easily be edited without going through a long tree of step

      It's now 5 years later.... you should all get a life! But one thing you can do in both Inventor and Fusion is drag the different operations in the list on the left- you can change their order. That can often fix leftover little bits very nicely in one move. The ability to change the order of operations and features is one of the most miraculous advances in the CAD revolution.

    Hey John, nice job. Finally succumbed and bought a sub to fusion 360 off the back of your vids. Really pleased with the results, being a manual machinist/fabricator it doesnt really come naturally to me but i must say im pleased with how intuitive fusion 360 is to pick up. The only previous cad experience i had was using PTC pro desktop back in the late 90's so this seems so easy to me! For the last bit with the arcs, I might have moved that entire thought process to the previous feature. Make the arcs manually or with the 2D fillet tool prior to extruding the cut (at the ~3 minute mark). Then pattern from there. I think that would save a few steps and some time. :)

    Thank you so much for this kind of crash-course type of video. I don't know about others, but I find it difficult to remember operations and such when there's a 20 min+ video. Explaining quickly in a direct manner is really the fastest way to learn this kind of stuff in my opinion.

    I just gave this a shot, but I took a slightly different approach for those outer curves. Instead of extruding that outer curve and then trimming it off, I drew them into the initial cut. I started exactly the same with the 2 lines from the center 45 apart, and the 2 arcs between them. But then I added a 3-point circle on each end between each radii and the arcs. Then I trimmed the extra lines, and was left with a curved "kidney bean" shape. Then I cut it out and patterned the feature.

    Hi John,
    for the pockets I would usually just add the radius to the corners of the sketch profile via sketch>radius. Then just cut it down as per what you did.
    Cheers

    At 5:25 you can use a "to" push pull you'll find that option under extents. Then select the sketch as normal then click the slanted face.That will allow you to extrude exactly the amount you need without having to cut it off in a later step.

    Symmetry is the hobgoblin of design. Twist caps should offer more traction and strength for loosening than for tightening. Also, the torsion that can be applied manually is limited by the tensile strength of skin. For this gas cap the lobes should be cammed for fingers to grip to loosen but to have less purchase in the tightening direction.

    Hey John. Great quick tutorial. I have been working with Fusion for a little while and love it. I found out you can drag things around in the timeline and they carry on down the line... You may have been able to drag your last extrude before the pattern. You'd probably get an error on the pattern so then edit that and select the "new" faces you wanted to pattern. Just an idea. You'd still have to cut off the access like you did though. The timeline is money! Or Just go back a few functions and add them in if need be.

    To make the final fillets you can just extrude to object and then select the slanted face. I think that will extrude until it intersects and save you from having to trim it up.

    Great straight forward video and not even to fast ;) Nothing wrong with the way you did that, like you said it mite not be 'proper' but unless it breaks the model then I guess it works just fine. The way I would have drawn that is create a cylinder with the center depression with a revolve or with an extrude and cut, then sink the grip cuts into the cylinder, pattern the cut outs, then cut your OD chamfer with a revolve. Still the same result just my approach and still may not be 'proper'.

    New to Fusion 360. Mine doesn't seem to have that trim feature, so maybe you added that to the top line..
    I "assume" I can do "S" for search for Shortcuts, and look for "trim"... as a guess not having fusion in from of me..
    Great video. As you say, as long as it works...
    Interestingly, rather than delete your plane, which I would TRY to do, you simply hide it...
    I am not used to going back in the timeline to add an operation.. When I try it, I end up with a dogs breakfast...
    I suspect a tutorial on the timeline would be mighty tricky...
    Also, I am watching this video 7 years after it was posted.........

    GWrider59 Hi. Thanks for a great video. I've been looking at various CAD programs and want one that runs on a Mac. So when I stumbled across Fusion 360 it seemed too good to be true. I think some of the more interesting modeling videos I've seen have been on the subject of how to model a sport bike tire...you know, the wide tires with interesting tread designs. Modeling a tire such as this is a true test of a CAD program, since the tread shape has to be warped in two different directions. I think if Fusion 360 can be used to do this type of model, then it can do just about anything. Could you do a sports bike tire modeling tutorial? I have been searching RUclips for several nights in a row and haven't seen one on this subject yet.

    Hi John, hope all is well in the new shop and a neat video.
    Question: have you tried drawing an arc slot in fusion...? No joy for me as there is no arc slot option like inventor. Seems like a common option to have left out.
    Also I just changed my HDD to an SSD.... wow! So much better for opening design programs even in my old i3 laptop.

    • @bertr5650
      @bertr5650 9 лет назад

      +Bert R you can just use the Trace command in CAM and set axial offset to depth but only if you have the exact dia endmill for the size slot you want....not ideal.

  • @MrDaniell1234

    good stuff, another way you could of done it was draw a line at the back of the bit sticking up against the top edge of the pocket and just press pulled it of with a cut,
    or just draw it in as a 2D sketch, (add the revolve shape at the same time) do a circular pattern of the pockets, press pulled it up and cut it to shape with a revolve, draw your centre circle on top press pull done. if you want a screen cast let me know. anyway how you did it was fine there's nothing wrong with bashing (hacking) your way through it.
    I do it all the time to learn how to do something if I can't find info on how to do what I won't

    • @tbone6293

      +intagliode I was wondering the same thing myself. I use solidworks and solidcam and wondering if he thought fusion360 was better and why.

    • @TheWidgetWorks
      @TheWidgetWorks 9 лет назад +1

      +intagliode Me as well, I've not seen a good review of the two system comparing there pro's and con's. I've started playing around with fusion 360 but really can get into the CAD. I find it really clunky compared to solidworks. Now if I was using this for fun or just starting up there is no way I think the many thousands of dollars that solidworks/HMSworks cost makes it that much better. I mean fusion is only $40 a month per seat for a full licence, they will let a hobbyist or small business use it for free! For now that is... Once they have us all on board then they will hold us all hostage for... One million dollars mmuhahahahaha...

    • @intagliode
      @intagliode 9 лет назад

      +Widget Works Manufacturing Inc. My first 3D cad was solidworks 97. Then when i was forced to use autodesk inventor for work. I realised it was way easier & far more advanced than solidworks. At the time. Fusion is very similar to inventor. It really comes down to your personal preference. I found fusion a little strange at first. But have to say. For a free or low cost CAD solution. It a powerful product.

    awesome vids i revisit these many times but 7:50 i only need measures of those dimensions 6 radius 2 lines and i can mill that and lines would be exatly how many points there is 8. then wrap it on loop for how much your depth of cut is. DONE! 1 pocket. tool is smaller than that pocket?. no problem i allready know how much it will leave i only need 2 moves and 1 g2/g3. after 1 pocket done then rotate coordinate and same code. without need cam!. machine i work has 256kb memory how big is that 1 program :). i not like cam when it post circles with thousants of points when you can do it with g2/g3 with 1 line! cnc mache do those movements

    • @Bigwingrider1800
      @Bigwingrider1800 8 лет назад

      Male /female tooling refers to the top side of the part as well as the bottom, metal thickness clearance, so in a press with the proper blank you will get a sheet metal part formed to the math..

    @John.. couldn't agree with you more - F* cad etiquette. I would've made this gas cap the same way you did and I've been doing cad for twenty years. The burden belongs to autodesk to make their cad's more intuitive. At least autodesk is on the right track with fusion 360 which is a big leap forward for everybody.. better late than never. Btw.. the morons that push cad etiquette are always the same one's that didn't mind dissecting and reassembling endless arrays of polygons in 3d studio max and the like - clucks.
