Maybe this is irrelevant but something about the way she wrote the story was just so satisfying. She was so detailed and descriptive I felt like I was sitting in the salon witnessing the whole thing 😂.

While listening to the story, a thought came up. Maybe it's because it says it is permanently altering your natural hair color what makes some people think this actually applies to your regrowth too. I remember someone telling me "you had such a nice natural blonde hair color when you were a kid, you totally ruined that by coloring your hair" and I thought she just didn't like the color my hair had... But she actually believed that my natural hair color grew back darker because I once colored it brown. She didn't believe me when I explained to her that my hair color just changed from a level 10 to a level 6 over the years. I can only try to imagine how hard it can be when you actually work in a salon and have clients like this...

I've def had a couple negative experiences with stylists...but I was young and not confident enough to stand up for myself at all...once I asked for side bangs explained what I meant and exactly where I wanted the shortest piece and the mf cut actual bangs...pretty damn short too!...there was just no way he thought my explanation meant I wanted what he did...n when he could tell I was like 🙊omg he looked at my mom n goes "well she said bangs" n shrugged...more than once had stylists get kind of argumentative when I said I wear my hair curly and needed a cut for curly hair...they wouldn't believe me and would give me a cut that looked great blown out but when I let it air dry/used a diffuser it just looked weird🤦🏻
I feel the same, I never would have thought it needed to be explained that hair still grows it's natural color! Even before becoming a stylist lol

Seriously though, if a hair stylist started to explain to me that my hair will keep growing out in the color it is... I would most definitely feel as if they’re insulting my intelligence!
Also, why on earth would you book a touch up appointment if you were utterly convinced that it would keep growing out black?! No need for touch ups!
Bless the hair stylist and her way of handling this. And also, it takes some guts for the customer to show up after acting that way, so I’m glad the customer made up for her behavior. We all mess up sometimes.
Bro if someone came in screaming at me I would start crying immediately. Good on her for taking a deep breath and explaining herself as calmly as possible. Trying to get better at that.

personally i think the real hero of the story was the boss for straight up telling the client (in as polite a way as possible) that if she didn't calm down that they'd call the police. yes, being calm and collected is good in these situations but when someone's screaming in your face, especially if they're borderline threatening you, they are no longer entitled to you bending over backwards to appease them.
How....just....how does someone not understand roots?! If you are a blonde and dye your hair black you will have roots, what on earth made her think that all of her future hair would be the same color you dyed it that ONE TIME! 🤦🏻♀️
If altering your DNA profile was that easy (and "cheap" on top)... A lot of people would immediately lose their job.
I had a client once tell me her color was fading at her root. Like no honey you're getting older and your gray is getting more prominent. 😂 That only happened once and she's in her 80s and I still do her hair today but I thought it was so funny when she sat down at her 5 week touch up complaining about that 😂

I work in a petshop...there's no common sense in a lot of pet owners. I think people just lack common sense in general.

Elfie From Angel City same @ my job, we have a HUGE sign that says “swipe your card chip doesn’t work” but they still come up to my register and ask does your chip work? 😂
Or try to stick their card in the chip reader even though it’s covered 😂
I feel like this was one of those situations where the woman was just dealing with a lot of personal hardships and thinking she was lied to and taken advantage of was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Because otherwise she sounds like she was a pretty nice lady. We all have those breaking points. The hairstylist that wrote you did an amazing job handling the situation!

I can definitely confirm that telling someone to 'calm down' NEVER works. It actually worsens it. Instead of calm down, tell them "Okay, I'll help resolve this or please tell me the issue." I work at a group home with extremely violent teens. Calm down always makes them rile up.
I'm a nurse and I agree. Never tell someone upset to calm down.
Agree 100% I cringed when I heard that, cause it usually upsets people more lol She said the right things otherwise.
Support Worker here, and never has “calm down” stopped a client from trying to hit you.

Thats so true, i learned the hard way to never say Calm down but instead go ahead with the crazy and try to understand where its coming from cause when u understand what they want they will calm down
Omg. I had a platinum client who called every 4 weeks to let me know her hair turned dark again at the scalp. The struggle is real !
I’m a guy who hated his hair. It was really short and I wanted to grow it longer but the problem is it looks extremely fluffy while it’s growing out. Because of this no matter what you say to a barber they will nod their head and give you a short back and sides, longer on top.... (standard UK 8 pound haircut)
I went to a hair salon where I spoke to a flamboyant man who I assumed would be more accommodating about trying new things since he had very creative hair himself, obviously experienced with different methods and stuff. But alas he didn’t. Instead he was condescending and inpatient, made me feel so stupid and unrealistic because i came in talking about growing my hair even though I needed a hair cut.
I completely understand I was probably frustrating because I don’t know anything about hair but I feel like sometimes stylist forget that i didn’t go to school to study this, I’ve had the same hair cut for 19 years and this is a brand new experience for me and I’m here asking for their help and knowledge.
I really felt like a loser that day which is a sucky feeling. Also I didn’t get a cut I was happy with, honestly it was similar to the standard “men’s cut” just with a higher price tag attached to it.
Despite this, I stayed with salons and ended up finding this woman who was absolutely amazing. She’s honestly the mother Theresa of hair. She was honest and straight to the point, she came up with a really good transitional hair style, more of like an undercut that’ll let me grow out most of my hair. She also taught me my hair is fluffy because it’s actually curly but I don’t look after it. She recommended a defuser and some better conditioner. That was the life saver! She’s honestly so nice and so professional and did all this just through small talk while she was working on my hair.
I’ve been going to her for 3 years now and I finally love my hair, I’d recommend her anyone.
Basically, I just wanted to write this because I know if you’re an extremely talented hair stylist it might be easy to think these little things are common knowledge but sometimes it really really isn’t and talking through things is really appreciated for shy introverted & sometimes overwhelmed people like me 😅
No matter what though it’s no excuse to barge into a shop yelling and screaming because you didn’t get your way

I feel like she didn't realize her roots were going to grow back so quickly and just immediately thought "oh heck it's washing out" After you dye your hair your hair growth becomes much more evident.
Omg, I would have been traumatized if that happened to me, I would have been professional and explained to her, but I would never have taken the client back, too stressful!!

I feel like she didn’t realize that her hair grew, she must have thought “oh shit it washed out” when she saw her grays. I don’t think she ACTUALLY thought her roots would grow back gray, she just didn’t think that was the case at first...but yeah hair grows quicker than you think and when you get your hair colored, it becomes more evident!

Ha my regrowth shows up almost immediately because I have it blonde but my natural color is almost black. I can’t imagine storming into a salon and demanding to know why I have a black strip after two weeks 😂
I find that something helpful is to ask the person what do they like about that (for example,the picture) and then explain thag it looks that bright because the pic is taken with sunligjt, so, 'do you want to look like thah under sunlight (and inside ot would be darker) or under artificial lights (and outside is probably lighter)? Also, what do you like about that? It's the waves, it's the colour, it's the haircut?' i do this with everything lol even when asking friends what type of boy they loke or what do they want to eat... Okay so ice cream, but the point is something sweet, something cold, both (so it could also be a smoothie), or just ice cream?
That is perfect, really helps clarify what they're looking for whether they understand perfectly or don't know how hair works! Every hairstylist should start doing this to make their job easier and their clients happier :)

even though the stylist responded in the best possible way and the situation turned out really well, it still doesn't make it fair. The client still wasn't right to yell at them.
Wow thank you both for this. It was truly amazing and I most definitely learned so much from this. Now I feel more confident when approaching a client who may not be happy. I also like how you discuss dialogue I do feel as though a lot not all, but a lot of hairstylists don’t know the proper dialogue when truly consulting or problem solving with a client. So I definitely learned dialogue and to breath/ be calm when approaching clients who may be unhappy with a service I provide

Am I the only one who is surprised every time about how rude clients can bewhen you hear a client horror story. I personally wouldn’t even scream when they shave my hair off.

The part where the client realized their mistake, cried a bit and apologize profusely made me want to cry. She then tipped them, doesn't come in for a while after that, brings in chocolates and flowers. Awww, this story went from sweet to scary and then back to sweet again~! Crap! I love it! I love a happy ending.

I definitely think the client was having a hard time coming to terms with going gray & aging... unfortunately, I think her unwillingness to accept that fueled her disillusion in believing that “permanent color” meant she will stop going gray altogether. This would also explain why she was unreasonably upset about her new growth. Doesn’t make her reaction right AT ALL, but it sounds to me like she was dealing with some insecurity and was lashing out.
Omg that first story was a roller coaster of emotions. Everything about it. The stylist handled it flawlessly. My god. I felt bad for the client in the end. She must have really been going through it to come in and embarrass herself like that. And the client after telling her to buy lunch on her. Wow. Really sweet that y’all don’t want to make people feel stupid and handle it with grace no matter what. You don’t have to but it really shows your golden character. Amazing.

Oh man that's wild! I feel like when you work in a certain space you just assume that things that are common sense to you would be common sense to others .. ESPECIALLY with a situation like this. I have similar experiences working in travel and trying to make sure my clients have all of the information that they need WITHOUT making them feel that I assume they know nothing. Just as awful as it is skipping over something important because you assume they would know it, is telling someone something SO basic that they're like "do you honestly think I don't know that??" :/ .. it's a delicate balance for sure.

A sad truth of this story is that the client was hoping for a miracle due to her insecurity about her natural hair color, but fails to realize that hairstylists are not magicians.

omg hahaha this reminded me when I went with my mom to a hair salon to bleach my hair and apply color for the first time, ( I have dark brown hair it's between 3 and 4 in the color chart) and I wanted to bleached enough to color it purple, I knew at some point it was going to look orange but my mom didn't and she asked why that was happening, she wasn't aggressive or anything but she clearly was worried, at the end she thought it was going to go from brown to blond, at the end, it was a funny anecdote that I wanted to share, love your videos
Omg. I started laughing when i got it where the client thought “PERMANENT” hair color. Like it would never grow out grey again lol. LORD save me. This is hysterical. Mensa! What the hell. I feel so sorry for the stylist. Oh jeez, I have so many crazy story’s in my 20 plus years. Let me get it on paper and I’ll let you know. I could totally write a book, “What not to say”, or how to calm down, how to keep it professional tutorial for stylist. Ive made sooooooo many boo boos in my day. Wish i could re-do my bizarre situations, but then again, I’m glad for it because it made me a better, understanding, able to calm the situation down or just..........I’m not the right stylist for you. I just had a situation with politics. Totally knew better, thought the client and i had a relationship. She knew all about y family, I knew hers, we cried together. But Oh no girl, politics should never be brought up. No matter if you think you are close. Please, Please, never ever go there. At 52, polished, professional and knew better. It went south, but I was able to save our professional relationship. But, I will never look at her the same way again. Professional, always.
This is such a great lesson overall for us in the salon. It's all about the customer service. 🤗

This is definitely common sense! I've also heard of people who thought their nails were going to stay perfect and not grow out after having extensions 😂. You couldn't make this up 😂. Thanks for the video, great idea using other people's stories! ❤️❤️❤️

I understand what you said at the end about how you never know what people are going through and the hair may have been the straw to break the camel's back... but holy cow... part of being an adult is controlling your emotions and treating others, especially strangers with at lease an ounce of respect! I just dont understand how full blown adults go around hurting strangers. But at the same time I am so torn because I do have some empathy and compassion for others and what they may be going through mentally... but it still makes me so so so angry! I am torn. I'm a server so this back and forth goes through my head often, as we are often treated like garbage. Those were just guilt chocolates. This story fired me up man.

Wow, I would not have handled that well. That is attitude and maturity goals right there. I'm not a stylist, but I've worked in the service industry (as a courier) and I've found that clients that tip ridiculously well tend to cause problems down the line. I had this new client that I was going to charge $40 for their delivery, then the location changed as I was on my way. I said no problem, but it's going to be $60 now because that's quite a bit further. She told me that was too low, I was being too kind, etc etc and ended up tipping me at least $40 (it might have been $60). This was such a good experience I had no problem later accepting a job going from Los Angeles all the way up to Carmel By the Sea (about 300 miles) with no money up front. She stiffed me $350 dollars!

As a restaurant server, Christina story really was good & relatable. There's so many times I have guests that drive me crazy during the greet but by the end of the meal we're bestfriends 😂
This reminds me of this hairstylist in this shop I would go to all the time since I was literally like 7 (I'm now 22). Her coworker was friends with my mom and would always do my moms nails and and the main chick I'm talking about, specialized in dying hair. She was SOO good at it. So when I was in highschool, we decided to stop by her new shop and I wanted to get my hair done. I was growing it out (it's been short since I was about 10 at that time) and it was now past my shoulders and (when you have short hair forever, it's so hard growing out your hair because you want to keep cutting it short lol) i wanted one of those kinda scene girl hair styles, but not really. I wanted a razor cut to make it look choppy and I showed her this pic that she could definitely do on my hair. She cut my hair into a SUPER short pixie cut. Like REALLLY short. I think I had at max, an inch and a half of hair. I didnt notice her cutting my hair like this because I was focused on talking to my mom and I told her I wanted it to be a surprise and I didnt want to look. She then told me she coukdnt razor cut hair and stylists should even use a razor because it just damages hair like crazy (it doesnt). I was about to tell her I could just go somewhere else, not in a rude way, but she insisted that she could still pull it off.
So before I knew it, it was super super short and when I looked in the mirror, I was like "oh my GOD why is it so short????"
She said that the look I handed her could only be pulled off in a short hairstyle, bUT THE LOOK I GAVE HER WAS LITERALLY LONGER HAIR.
When my hair grew back out, I decided to go back and tell her EXACTLY how I wanted things to the T. I wanted to give her another chance because I've known her for so long and maybe it was somehow my fault she messed it up (even though I know it wasnt). So I go in, and pretty much explain the exact blueprints of how I want my hair. SHE AGAIN CUTS IT EXTREMELY SHORT AND THEN BLAMES ME FOR NOT BEING CLEAR ENOUGH. Then my mom stepped in and told her that she clearly told her how I EXACTLY wanted it. So the hairstylist got upset at me and was like "well I can only take off $5 since you didnt want to be clear"
Needless to say, I never went back to her again

Also, you never know when you're not dealing with a neurotypical person - sometimes a different brain processes things differently. I love how she handled it, and I love how you told it and all of your commentary. Thank you for this video

You're such an amazing human, you've got to be an old soul and so is that hairstylist cause it could have gone a whole other way and the stylist and the client both would have been left feeling an unnecessay kind of horrible and with just another bad memory to burden them.
