Thanks for the rundown. Just got mine in the mail today. Supper happy with how it sounds out of the box, running through the moog m32 to start things off - wow! What a sound.
I got the Microcosm about a month ago, and it’s lived it’s entire life hook up to my audio interface as a hardware effect for my DAW. I send basically everything through it now
This is fantastic! As an older person, (65) just getting into synths so my mind stays sharp, and I love electronic music, how do these work together and with synths? I just bought a grandmother and a rev2. Would it be overkill to add these two pieces of gear to create soundscapes and longer more complex sequences?
Not overkill, it’s would be amazing fort that, If u want textures go for it, microcosm is amazing, and if u want alternative you have chase bliss audio who make thermae, it’s phenomenal
The microcosm presents such a dilemma. It's gorgeous. It sounds so unique and distinct! It's frustrating being a producer hearing it all over the place, but at the same time. It's damn pretty, and the general audience doesn't care. The microcosm will be kinda like the Korg Triton in the 2000's. Really iconic, almost over used, but damn good regardless! I'm sold!
@@xsm5525 the price is really not that bad for a quality stereo pedal with 11 different, great unique effect types, 4 awesome reverb types, a nice filter, several other great controls, midi connectivity and a fantastic looper. Compare to buying a Red Panda Particle + nice stereo multi-reverb + nice looper... and that won’t even get you close to what MC can do.
Seems like the kind of pedal that is purpose-built for the Octatrack's Cue-out, but I would never have considered using the Digitakt's panning to achieve something similar. Pretty rad, Jeremy.
fantastic demo. first one i've heard where the microcosm has been clocked and it's very cool. lots of wishy washy ambient demos around, but clocking turns it into a badass glitchy rhythm machine!
Now I see why people really like it. I haven't done much with midi yet, but this just might add a reason... Granular beat cat at the end was just what that needed. 😋
Great stuff as usual! Since you asked at the end, i'm using the Microcosm as a best buddy for the Soma Labs Lyra-8 synth, lending lovely textural atmosphere (and sometimes actual cohesion!) to my consistently-chaotic explorations into alternate dimensions of the sonic unknown 🤯🌌
ordered the microcosm a couple of weeks back and eagerly waiting for it to arrive in dezember. the digitakt was on and off my wishlist for a while now. i started to built a dawless jam setup last week looking for a centerpiece. i came back to watching digitakt tutorials. suddenly you upload this video and i am sold haha ordered the digitakt and it should arrive next week and now i am sitting here like a five year old on xmas day getting more and more excited with every digitakt video i watch :D in german we have a word for it called “vorfreude”. best feeling!
I have watched a bunch of videos about Hologram's Microcosm and I love the things we can do with it. I can see it in home recording and maybe even in a studio where you don't have to pay per hour. However, it's not suitable for live performance. It needs an option to store settings as named presets for that and of course that needs an illuminated display.
Thanks for the panning/routing inspiration! 1 neat trick is that you can mix in a smidge of select perc tracks by adding a bit of the other channel back in when desired. Automate the panning with an LFO for rhythmic fx send action.
Any device that makes Jeremy giggle like a school girl is a winner in my book! Meanwhile I’m using the Microcosm to empty my wallet and it worked amazingly well, now I gotta wait for March’s batch. :/
20:04 Damnn thats so sweet how it basically creates a vocal pad, as if it was an instrument that was programmed in your track. It fits brilliantly without being too much. Really fucking beautiful.
I don't have one but have loved every video I've seen on this thing. I'm a sucker for anything ambient and this sounds gorgeous. It's also maybe the most beautiful physical design I've seen in a pedal.
Microcosm in form factor, Macrocosm in sonic possibilities. Kinda want this thing a lot, a lot, now. Def picked the right person to show off what this pedal can do, too. Great stuff, Jeremy.
yes! amazing video as ever, Jeremy! Like you sort of touch on, I'm ready for a spiritual sequel to this video, maybe on the Octatrack, using the looper and MIDI CCs for fun (and profit)
You really show how great the Microcosm can sound! It's interesting seeing a pedal that (to me) seems less like something you'd put on a pedalboard and more like a desktop piece. It's one of many things on my wishlist, lol.
I love what this pedal does so much!! Hologram recently sold their 10,000th (I got #292) Microcosm!! This is a cool tutorial. So many others don’t seem to know how to explain this beast.
Mine is hooked up to my DAW on an Aux track so I can send anything to it. I have to admit I didn't totally connect with the Microcosm at first, but once I started playing with the phrase looper I fell in love. I'm surprised you didn't use the looper at all in this video... it really lets you stack the weirdness!
@@jaguarvssnake try recording a loop; then shift the loop time slower or faster; then reverse it; then add another layer; then change the speed again; reverse again; and once you have gone totally crazy with layers and time changes, move the loop from post to pre so you can run the whole thing through the effects chain again. Chef’s kiss.
Dude, that was beautiful! I recently got my MC. I really like how it sounds in all the demos, but it’s actually a lot harder to use than I thought. Gotta put that time in to get to know the different effects. Lots of fun to play with though!
tnx mate - that microcosm on deep house really opened my eyes for once and for all at how Phobos Records and guys like Rausschaus and Peter Groskreutz did all these sounds that I didn't understand at first, but there it is. I know my next purchase.
Thanks for the excellent exploration into the Microcosm Jeremy. Really got me interested in this now, it’s a seriously sweet box of tricks, seems like it would be a very well utilized piece of kit in any studio/ set up. Think it’s time to order !
Druuuums please 😆 I've been looking for an fx pedal/reverb unit for eons I was going to build one but then I saw this a few months ago and now these videos have convinced me that I am looking at what my mind wanted and music needs

Thanks for drawing the rest of the owl for us
3:45. cool , but i like to place effects off my mixer so any thing can get sent to it , when i want .. plus then i can make feedback loops in different ways and combine everything
I use it for everything: on my Eurorack rig (end of chain), Circuit Tracks, and my desktop synths. It's definitely my go-to pedal. It's taken the place of my Eventide H9 Max. I agree, it pairs great with the Arp 2600 (well, my Behringer clone at least). I never thought about using it on drums! Thank you!!
I would love to see more videos with the microcosm. I am not a musician enthusiast but this makes audios experiences so good that it makes me want to buy one of theses to try it by myself, unfortunately its not available in my country 😢. Anyway I loved your jam and it makes me another follower of your work. Great video! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It seems like the macrocosm was built for a lot of different instruments especially the subharmonicon I've gotten amazing results with that pedal and since used in conjunction.

If elektron adds the ability to independently route channels to the headphone or not, it could be a stereo send to the microcosm et al. Feature request?
Such a great pedal! If they were to release a plug-in version of this I’d easily spend more than $100 for it. Maybe you could pass that along? Thank you Jeremy and happy holidays!
I misjudged this pedal! A lot of demos use the Microcosm like the CBA Mood where it is just nice-sounding chaos, which is fine but not super valuable to me, but you provided fantastic musical context for it.

This is the first time the microcosm has ‘WOWED’ me. Such a smart idea to hard pan the samples and run the R channel as a send to the pedal!
Yeah, I’m impressed with this simple but powerful routing and hard panning. Definitely plan to utilize this method.
