a year ago, having no idea what I was doing, I Twitter DMed you about how MIDI cables worked. You responded, which was surprising. I now make shitty EDM in my underwear every night wearing cowboy hat, and it possibly saved my life/sanity during the pandemic. You, sir, you sir, are special.
On that note how do midi cables work? I’m about to get my first synth and I want to hook it upto my computer and I have no idea how to do that. Any recommendations on people to watch or pages to go too? I’m such a noob! 😅😅
This thing is pure magic. I run my Pocket Operators through it, especially the PO-12, and it just blows my mind. It's like strapping a rocket to a hot dog.
Best pedal ever. It might even be the best effect ever - hardware or software. It never ceases to amaze me and feels like an endless wellspring of creative ideas and magic. Hologram, if you're reading this - THANK YOU!
Was running the MC almost exclusively on the Soma Labs Lyra-8 - the literal best pairing of two things evaarr, IMHO.... Now, i've started running IT with my Dark Microverse setup (Circuit Tracks, Nymphes, Typhon, TR-6S, KP3+, etc.... Amazingly lovely stuff coming out of there right now! And as usual, thank you so much Jeremy for a thorough and thoroughly-entertaining tour through everyone's favorite FX box of the New Millennium! 😃🙏🙏🙏🌌
Awesome video as usual, thanks for all of the continued work! I like my Microcosm so much that I created a free and open Max4 Live MIDI device to interface and control it within Ableton. The device basically adds some modulation sources which help you add variation to many of the Microcosm settings (Activity, Space, Filter, Repeats, etc...) over time. Not sure I can add links here, but search youtube for MODOCOSM and you'll likely find it. I hope other Microcosm users find it helpful.
I bought a Microcosm from the second batch (I think) and have been using on almost everything since then, but now I feel that I still have a lot of great sounds to discover. Thank you for an awsome demo!
Love this thing. Love using it in conjunction with the Octatrack and the Korg KP3 plus. Great little box of inspiration. Absolute stellar job of showcasing it. Thank you!
Watching this made me realize that I'm in love with music, in awe of how we we are even able to play with sound! Thank you, this was a beautiful experience and I'm def gifting myself one of these now :D
Your video is so useful to anybody that has a Microcosm. Thanks Red Means Recording for making this. I see a lot of people putting effects/effect pedals before or after the Microcosm for even more tripped out sounds. I am recording drums going through it, then chopping up and sequencing glitches.
Thanks for the inspiring tour. It made me re-wire my interface so I can send Ableton tracks into Microcosm via Octatrack. A few hour later I found out how great Microcosm can be with vocals - if you’re lucky you can catch really atmospheric loops by engaging the looper.
Red Means Ridiculously Excellent. Thanks for another amazing presentation, Jeremy. I've loved watching your videos for years, starting with all the stuff you did/do with the OP-1.
I bought a Microcosm a couple of weeks ago, and while I've played with it, there was a lot of mystery in my mind about how the knobs actually affected things. Watching you play with it in real-time has cleared up a lot for me.
Sounds exceptional, thank you for the in depth review. My wife and I are starting a new project and the Microcosm will be our Christmas gift to ourselves 😊
Hey Jeremy - This is a super demo 👍 I did some Improb jams with the Mix set to fully wet - playing the Microcosm as an instrument. Massive fun! Really like your Glide demo - Great way to use it with drums 👍
Very good indeed, I’m a guitarist I bought my Hologram pedals years ago and haven’t used them anywhere near as much as I should. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂 regards from London 🇬🇧 UK
Perfect timing. I just traded my Morphagene for a Microcosm and have been getting to know it. I've been avoiding bringing together my in-the-box and hardware music experimentation worlds but hearing these virtual instruments through the pedal is having me rethink my studio setup.
Demo #2 stunned me. I didn't expect to hear any post-rock stuff here, and yet you just produced stuff that sounds like it should sit next to my Mogwai, God is an Astronaut, and Tides From Nebula album. Where do I preorder? That being said, RMR never ceases to amaze me. Now, after two years of watching your channel, I have a bunch of gear (yes, Hologram Microcosm included - if The Sponsors are reading this I'm happy to provide the proof of purchase :D), brain full of ideas, and a feeling I should be working less and doing more bleep-bloops on synths, because it's fun!
Very cool! I love my hologram microcosm and I actually use it with my guitar which seems to be rare lol even though it’s a guitar pedal first. Of course it’s great on synths and other things like you’ve displayed here. Honestly I feel the strength is in the looper. I love the looper and what you can record into it with the built in effects always sounds great and then you can change the speed of the loop which pitches it down or up which also sounds way cool especially when slowed down.
My first thought in the second effect demo in the moment you touched the knob and with my slight perception delay. „Wow. This thing not only adds rhythm, that sounds like a decent hi hat to me too“ The Plonker part of me.
Hi, great video and demonstration of what this "little machine" can do! I would like to ask your advice on how you connected it to use it together with a Kontakt instrument. I use Logic Pro and Audient iD44 sound card. Thank you if you take the time to give me an answer.
And in addition. This is one of these episodes that make me wish you would release a dj kicks styled( nicely faded driven with the effect ) mix of the demo tracks.
Dreamy and creamy as always and awesome! But I'm currently saving up for an Endorphins Ghost and Mordax so.... this one goes in the waaay later GAS pile.
Really inspiring video..thanks. Could you give a brief explanation of how to connect the microcosm to get the soft synths playing through it. Sorry it’s a newbie question but I have my Eurorack modules playing through the unit but am at a loss as how to get my Arturia vst’s to work with it. Cheers Phil
I'm about to buy one for ~340€ but with the Ghost module now on the market... i am not sure i'm doing the right thing, i don't have the experience to make a decision, but the price is nice XD I guess it will keep it's value for sure so.. ^^ thank you for the fun video!
I’m curious how this can work around Eurorack. I have Morphagene/Beads/Starlab as my main voice/FX and I still want to further process my samples, haha. It sounds so incredible and am satisfied with my build, but this one has always been a consideration to my sampler/granular build.
Not trying to be negative but am I the only one who doesn't like this pedal? I've tried it IRL a couple times and it tends to make things sound indistinct and needlessly obscured... My music isn't really reliant on lots of "texture", but even if it were I would want to have more control over that texture than this pedal can provide. The reverb in it is pretty nice, but I couldn't easily find a way to isolate just that part of it, which is what I ended up wanting to do. Anyway, if you have Ableton you can spend a few hours and make all these effects with gates, reverbs, beat repeats, pitch shifters, delays etc and put them into perfect little chains with macro controls, and save them forever and use ur midi controller on them if you really want to. Also, some aspects of the way that this company is marketing their pedal is a bit icky imo. Just my $0.02, not hating on anyone who uses this thing. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
The magic is in the looper IMO once you start layering in the looper specifically guitar layers , playing them in live with the effects in the loops and then slow/pitch it down you’ll start to find some inspiration IMO but again it’s very textural and ambient sounding.
I can see where you are coming from. . . I was trying to get away from my computer so got this, but I still think in Ableton -- "I want it to do this crazy thing and feed that into whatever random thing, and then I wanna sequence the slices to blah blah blah." And this is more like a crazy ass delay pedal with a pretty awesome reverb and low pass filter.
I own a Microcosm, got it recently. I'm not sure good with it, yet, but I'm working on it. Anyhow, background aside, I think there's nothing wrong with your feelings towards it. Not everything will appeal to everyone, different people have different expectations. I quite like the Microcosm, I got it after months of watching videos and being specifically aware of what it does, how it excels, and what it also isn't for. That makes my expectations for the pedal quite reasonable, I guess. There are people who buy wah pedals and fuzzy pedals, or distortion pedals. I couldn't see myself buying one of those, or any of those. I don't like them at all, don't like their sound. That said, I can understand that there are others, obviously, who love those effects. Not for me, but I can see why it's for them. It's just what they want. Anyway, nice comment.
Is it okay to nerd out for a minute and notice that you matched the instrument cables perfectly to the mc logo? ❤️🤓 Any chance you know who makes them?
The Microcosm could be amazing but its issues with clicking (like the samples it generates often aren't faded appropriately) and gain sensitivity (which can be notably variable between algorithm patches and easily result in digital clipping) really take off some of the shine and lead to loads of otherwise unnecessary retakes and/or editing. Hopefully Hologram can sort these in a firmware update....

Wow! at 19:40 in, yet another outstanding piece of artistry! It makes me think of a possible sequel to Kubo and the 2-strings.
