The use of the female voice counting is absolutely brilliant................so clearly evident exactly what the device is doing with the signal.......(killer visual as well)
Thanks. It happened by accident tbh. I was using the counting in a track and realised it revealed what was going on. I’ve had the unit for a year or so and not done a demo as couldn’t think what else to add to the demos already out there. I’m glad this helped 😀
Yeah, accidents rock......Here's one of my Microcosm videos - you'll likely get a kick out of the intro, if nothing else: ruclips.net/video/BiRywMGG1zM/видео.html
It's a real credit to this machine that, despite your best intentions, you got carried away and demo'd nearly all of the algorithms! Understandable though, it really does sound good.
man that counter part was so helpful. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around how the microcosm process sound and it made me realize how it’s actually affecting the input signal and the responsiveness of the activity knobs. amazing vid
Thankyou so much. The BEST demo of this box of tricks I've seen. The fact that you used one original sample which you then reshaped using the knobs and dials really clearly illustrated the creative possibilities to full effect. So glad you got carried away. 🙃
I’m not an electronic musician in anyway, I’m a Luddite guitarist. But I own a microcosm. I love it but found myself just doing the tricks with it. Wanted a refresher and found this video. Can I say this is THE BEST demo I’ve seen of the microcosm. Seriously. So good. Thanks for your work and brilliant video on this delightful pedal.
High praise indeed!!! when I made this there were lots out already, but none that really helped me get to grips with it. I was hoping this would fill that gap.
Thanks. Theres a lot out there! I spent a while thinking g about this, which is why it was released later than most and why it’s not fit as many views as others, but sometimes it’s better to really get to grips with something g this complex before trying to demo it. I struggled with it for ages before it really clicked.
I'm really grateful to you for demystifying the Microcosm for me. I own one and have it in-line in my setup, but I haven't had enough luck of my own in making it a coherent enough experience to use it reliably. Even just seeing it so large on my screen (65" TV) has allowed me to notice things, like the secondary functions of each knob, and your going over everything patiently and in-depth... Man, what a difference in understanding it all makes. Thank you VERY much for this presentation.
I just finished the presentation. Truly an excellent walkthrough and tutorial. Thank you again, the effort and care you put into your presentation were not lost on me.
@@StarskyCarr yeah but your genius was to stick to stable reference patches going into it 😝 so we could actually see what’s going on! You’ve made me realise I’ve got space and loop up too far all the time on mine and that’s why it’s all sounding a mess cheers 🍻
Probably never gonna buy this because I’ll have buyer’s remorse but great video. Probably the best electronic music channel on youtube. Way more information than the usual channels. Also nice to hear a scouse accent on here. All the best from Ireland. Cheers
Absolutely killer video! It was already great, but I lost it when the voice counting sample was played, skewed and morphed in beautiful ways! I could hear a phat beat behind a few of those quick examples, hah
Really appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the initial sample you used. Curious what its origins are. Also, I really appreciate the overview despite there already being lots of reviews on it, your perspective is most welcome :D
Thank you for the video! Currently borrowing a Microcosm from a generous friend and having trouble fitting it into my edm/house music. It's great for ambient clouds of sound and background texture, but I'd like to try it midi sync'd to a sampler with some breaks and a bassline going. Or maybe sample it and slice it up in the Octatrack? The future is unwritten.
Yes my friend. That’s how to mess with signal. Seen this when it came out. Your video makes me need to own it now. Yes it’s cheating but hay. I ain’t got time to programme them parameters anymore. Bloody god vid. Mate. Well done
If i had a budget, i would demo pedals with my MC707. It has an dedicated efx send/return mono or stereo, that can be patched at different points in the signal. And a ton of great sounding roland patches that shine with EFX.
Great demo with explaination of what is happenning. Been tempted many times to get one, but it seems to mangle the sound so much I don't know how I will use it in a track. For Ambient it would probably shine and be fun to noodle around with. Still want one just not at the top of my list that will never be complete.
Many thanks for a really instructive video, I have a question please. I'm getting some amazing results with the Hologram, you have a clarity to the sound your getting, it's crystal clear, do you have any suggestions of the best way to go about that . What are you using mixer wise , and any suggestions on the global settings to get the best results. I've got the the line level obviously, but are you configuring any other setting. Many thanks. Glenn..
Good demonstration at all. I think its a FX-Device which has its strenght in the Ambient and Chill area. I can not imagine how to use it in Techno or Deep House. A complex Drumloop and Bass sequence mangled by the Microcosm .....than its Ambient. Am I wrong?
Yeah I wouldn’t use it in anything complex. It did some nice things to the simple beat in the demo, but even then I’d sample it to keep the best bits for repeatability. It works best in more sparse material.
Thanks.. I came across it by accident when messing with this sample - really useful to understand what was happening. This takes mono or stereo, the tracker only samples in mono.
Awesome vid Starsky. I’m on the hunt for a pedal, what’s ur all time favourite??? Or too hard to say? The synths I want to run into it are an iridium, Virus TI2 and JP8000. Any advice from u would be much appreciated 😊
For a single pedal the H9 has it all and sounds great - but you need to hook it up to an iPad or laptop to get the most out of it. If you can do that in your setup it’s fantastic. For me it’s a PITA so it doesn’t get used as much (because I move from room to room). The empress reverb is stunning, and I really like the specular tempus which has delay and reverb. Big Sky so has the editor/librarian software. From all of those the simplest to use is the Empress. And it sounds great.
@@StarskyCarr legend, thanks for getting back to me mate ;) yea I’ve seen the H9 and also the H90 they recently dropped, but it’s sooooo expensive 😂. I’ll check out the others u mentioned now. Thanks legend, and keep up the awesome work ;)
Original, creative, addictive. However, until there’s a UK distributor / retailer - with an enforceable UK warranty - there’s no chance whatsoever I’ll be acquiring one. Burnt twice; never again!
I have purchased one of these and sold it again twice now.. although it does some great effects its audio quality is extremely disappointing in my humble opinion. Its a fun box but not for me
@@MrSNEAKFREAK96 Its a hard one to explain but ill try. I think my opinion comes from a comparison to the other outboard effects I own. I have a purpose built effects rig that contains all the moogerfoogers for modulation type effects, chase bliss cmx 1978 for reverb, gifi systems specular tempus for digital delays, empress reverb and delay, ibanez BBD chip rack unit for chorus, delay, doubling, a space station then also some tape delay units. All of the effects I currently run in my live and production rig are of the highest quality and if I didnt own these then the microcosm would most likely sound great. But when comparing the microcosm to these type of units there is a lack of fidelity and clarity in its effected outputs. Reverbs are noticeably artificial in theor tails especially when long, delays have no clarity or character and sound very very cheap. It does some really fun things but if you are going for a high quality sound then its not the best option. Everything becomes washed which might be the point of it but for synths its not optimal, but for guitar the results are much better.

PS: it digitally clips really bad when the source is "too hot" which happens quite often when you are source gain spikes...
yes they do.. and so do I. But its hard to dig into exactly what's going on with this by simply showing it sounding great on loads of different clips. It's hard to hear what's creating the differences in each algorithm. That's why this isn't labelled as a demo, but a walkthrough and tutorial. There are loads of videos showing it in musical pieces.. another one wouldn't add anything new to the conversation. You start creating tracks by playing with noises then pulling lots of ideas together into a coherent structure. Here I'm hoping to help people with a component, not the whole.
Why not both?!? I do a ton of melodic based improvisation, using whatever harmonic constructs in whatever keys. This seems like a really useful tool that would be complimentary to a more conventional melodic narrative.

no. no pedal is an 'instant X' for you. no bands or producers live inside pedals either. it's an okay FX unit though
