  • This is a tabletop review of the SMITH & WESSON M&P 45 SHIELD. In this video we will discuss the history, size and features of the firearm. In addition, we will demonstrate how to field strip and reassemble the gun for cleaning and inspection. Range performance will also be discussed along with different tested methods of carry and how comfortable it is to carry on a regular basis. Last, we will provide an overall opinion of how this firearm stacks up for concealed carry purposes. Thanks for watching!

    I've carried a full size 1911 for over 40 years. I bought the Shield 9mm when it first came out just to give it a try. At my second trip to the range, a fellow shooter noticed the pistol and asked to try it. After he emptied 2 mags he offered me $200 more than I paid for the gun - CASH!
    So when the 45acp model came out I quickly picked it up. Again, a fellow shooter simply had to have my firearm and I reluctantly let it go...
    Now I have the 2.0. It's not going anywhere! Very nice well-designed package.
    I've carried it cross-draw while driving, IWB and in an ankle holster as a backup gun. Very comfortable in all respects. Points well, shoots well and fits my hand nicely.

    I carried this gun (the Performance Center 2.0 version) for a number of months late last year and into this year with no problems. It shoots very well in .45 ACP (surprisingly so) and the recoil is very manageable. You don’t get a large capacity, but you get much better stopping power. With practice, you don’t need 100000x rounds in your carry gun to hit your target. The shield is also very compact compared to most other “smaller” .45s.

      @@billyunairpersonally to me. 45 is perfect.... especially for home defense....a 9 or 10mm will shoot thru a house and has the possibility of hitting other things besides the intended target. A 10mm will shoot thru a car from side to side. You don't want to hit the kids walking or your family in the other room. You have to think about bullet penetration....a 45 will stop in the target. A 9mm or 10......will go right thru.

    I went down to the range today and shot a Springfield XDS compact, a Glock 30 (they didn't have a 36, dang it) and this M&P Shield compact. I liked them all. I like the Springfield grip safety. But I felt best with the shield. I felt I was most accurate with it, although my inaccuracy is probably operator failure. Anyway, I think I'm gonna go with the Shield.

    I have the 1.0 version with night sties from S&W. For a 45 ACP it is one of the easiest to shoot pistol. I thought being smaller than 1911 there would take some time getting use to the recoil flip, NOPE. Very controllable in a small package and hold as many rounds as the 1911. It was a very surprising outcome, thought it would take a bit more learning curve. It was a good purchase and not looking back.. Crimson Trace make a LaserGuard Green laser w/light and IW holster combo option at one time. This was nice because it was designed to fit the pistol with that laser/light addition. Keep up the good work on reviews.

    I own this pistol (not the Plus or the 2.0 or performance center) for a few years now, I had it at the range recently with my ex (She has a newer Ruger 9mm), we were sharing the range booth. When it came time for me to shoot, I shot the mag until I emptied it. I asked her if she wanted to try my M/P Shield 45 out, so she can compare 9mm and 45 she said "F@$k that!" and walked away. I tried to get her to fire at least one or two rounds so she can feel the difference. She said, "I'm good...". She saw and heard the power of the 45 and that was enough to scare the crap out her. 🤣 I love this little bad boy; I don't think the trigger is bad at all. The grips are extremely aggressive which your shirt can stick to easily. But you need it to fire this little beast. So far, I have 2 six round, one seven round and a Promag 10 round mag. I recommend buying a quick loader of some type. The springs are pretty strong. It helps a lot. I carry this gun everyday now that in my state it is legal to concealed carry without a permit, even when I'm at home.

    I am a fan of the Shield 2.0 and Shield Plus pistols also but I prefer the Performance Center variants with the non-ported 4” barrel. The longer sight radius makes shooting accurately a bit easier and the increased velocity from the longer barrel is a definite benefit, especially for the 45 Auto. The 4” barrel Shields carry just as easily as the shorter barreled variants. Great pistols.

    .45 ACP is not appreciated today. It’s taking a beating by the “9mm is the best handgun cartridge and can rival .357 Magnum!” people. Most of them know nothing about physics and self defense shootings. .45 ACP is superior to 9mm.

    • @factsoftheconfederacy7151
      @factsoftheconfederacy7151 2 года назад +9

      The cross sectional area of the .45 ACP 230-grain bullet is .160 square inches; the cross sectional area of the 124-grain 9mm NATO bullet is .0989 square inches. The 9mm possesses only about 62% of the cross sectional area of the .45 ACP. A more traditional method of establishing the effectiveness of a given bullet is its sectional density, the ratio of bullet mass to the square of its diameter. Generally, the higher the sectional density, the better the penetration of the bullet in living tissue. The sectional density of the FMJ 230-grain .45 ACP bullet is .162; for the 124-grain 9mm NATIO bullet, the figure is .144. By this traditional method of establishing a bullet’s terminal effectiveness, the .45 is again superior to the 9mm when both projectiles are of the FMJ type. By any mathematical calculation, given equal penetration, the .45 ACP bullet will create an approximately 40% greater permanent would cavity volume than a 9x19mm bullet. These mathematical predictions are borne out by actual testing, such as the FBI ammunition tests alluded to earlier.

    • @factsoftheconfederacy7151
      @factsoftheconfederacy7151 2 года назад +7

      To return to the FBI test protocols, it will be remembered that in penetration tests the .45 ACP FMJ scored 100%, while the 9mm achieved a slightly lower 95.5% success rate. While the minimum acceptable penetration for police use was established to be 12 inches, the FBI tests concluded that a penetration of 18 inches was even better. During the tests, however, the FBI assigned no points for penetration beyond the optimum 18 inches. The .45 ACP FMJ bullets penetrated an average depth of greater than 28 inches, while 9x19mm FMJ bullets were a full 4 inches less. Some might consider this over penetration, but for military applications, greater penetration is both acceptable and desirable. As previously mentioned, penetration is only one aspect of bullet effectiveness. The size of the permanent wound cavity must also be considered, and the .45 ACP FMJ bullets in the FBI tests achieved average permanent wound cavities of 3 cubic inches, while the 9mm bullet permanent wound cavities were a full cubic inch less. This significantly increases the prospect of the .45 striking a bone or internal organ. This can be summed up in the FBI’s overall wound value that assigns a value of 2.91 to the military .45 ACP and only 1.65 to the M882 9x19mm. This value is “... the index of demonstrated wounding effectiveness, not potential, as measured by the FBI Ammunition Test results.”
