      I felt robbed of that friendship. Eric and Otis, Maeve and Aimee and even Jackson and Viv all had their friendship worked on. And Adam and Ola had what? Two scenes together if I remember correct, and one of them were very "tell and not show" (when Otis and Ruby's relationship gets out).

    I can't stress enough how authentic the Eric in Nigeria episode was. As a Ghanaian but born/raised in Canada, it was literally the first time seeing a western show accurately depict West Africa so well, from the African music in the episode, the scenes of the streets, and him just genuinely being excited to go visit (as opposed to thinking it would be a backwards place). What I love about sex ed is that it lets minorities be kinda shitty people without generalising about whole groups, if that makes sense? Like Isaac does some not great things in his relationship with Maeve, and Eric and Ruby treat people badly at points, but it’s very clear that their actions don’t reflect all disabled people, all queer people, all people of colour, all women etc. Sometimes you just get stereotypical bad representation, and sometimes the minority characters are all perfect, but sex ed lets them be multifaceted human beings capable of being both good and bad

      I agree but he should have reached out to Adam first, instead of his wife. Adam NEEDS him, the wife doesn’t. I hate how he sees his relationship with his son as the last thing on his itinerary.
      He should prioritize fixing things with Adam, because I feel like in the end, once his wife sees how much he improved his relationship with their son, she most likely will take him back. It also looks so wrong how all the times he visited the house after the separation, he never once spoke to Adam.

    My problem with Eric this season is that he kept picking fights with Adam and making up issues that weren’t there. He never tried to communicate with Adam, and whenever Adam showed an emotion he didn’t particularly like, Eric made Adam think he was picking a fight. That’s so messed up. And then to cheat and make Adam think it’s his fault because he’s not “gay enough”….idk. i just didn’t recognize Eric this season and that sucked. I don’t know why the writers did that? the issue I had with Eric this season stemmed mostly from his inability to see anything beyond his expectations. everything NEEDS to be sparkly and rainbow-bright, and if things aren’t living up to his dream romance he takes it soo personally, then gets defensive. like the woods scene pissed me off, if Eric had took even a moment to pay attention to Adam’s feelings, he would’ve realized that he was uncomfortable not with having sex with because he was a guy, but because he was just not ready to express his needs. also, guilting someone because they won’t have sex with you, when you want it, is a shitty thing to do.

      Eric has spent most of his former years getting bullied. He put a lot of work into developing his self-confidence. I think it's fine for him to set expectations for what he wants out of a relationship also he's a teenager. It's perfectly healthy and realistic for him to change his mind. Rahim was a little too cerebral for him, while Adam has a lot of personal growth to do that maybe Eric does want to involve himself with.

Poo based relationship!!

    • @robbiesmith8055
      @robbiesmith8055 2 года назад +54

      @@cheyennecharles9631 I think Eric struggling with feeling back in the closet is perfectly valid, and he's in no obligation to stay in the relationship (although to be fair, he did know it would be like that beforehand, as pointed out in the video). However he has now cheated on two partners, and seemingly doesn't really care much.
      After Otis had his chat with Ruby and they broke up, he felt like garbage for hurting her. And in the end, all Otis did wrong was be honest about his lack of romantic feelings towards her. But Eric cheated on Adam and then dumped him, and the next time we see him he's dancing around his room in a great mood. I can understand feeling happy now he feels less trapped in a restrictive relationship, but the way it's presented it really comes off like he couldn't care less about how he hurt Adam.

    I wish more folks talked about Ola and how she has many one sided relationships especially romantically. Lilly, didn’t care enough to ailllrt her or even remotely listen to anything ola had going on. Ola always listened and endured a lot from Lily but that’s never addressed. Ola was expected and is expected to constantly shelter and be receptive to everyone else around her. I wish they would have showed or highlighted better the kind of weight and depression that can cause someone. She was many peoples emotional dump truck including her own relationship and that never even improved by the end of the season in terms of her romantic relationship.

    • @VenusCryFlap
      @VenusCryFlap 2 года назад +115

      Definitely feel they left Ola hanging in this series. Her plot line of loss and traumatic changes were done in bits n pieces and usually via other characters. I felt there were too many plot lines going on, so she got shafted down the list. Lily's alien weirdness got a lot more airplay and attention than Ola's life being overturned.

    • @eria.l.833
      @eria.l.833 2 года назад +91

      Ikr! I was so pissed at Lily this season. Ola kept trying to talk to her about how she felt emotionally about her mom, and Lily kept talking over her about alien sightings. Love for your partner, imo, shouldn’t be based upon whether or not they believe the same conspiracy theories as you and her anger about Ola wanting to try having sex without role play was so uncalled for. Lily acted like a total victim the whole time and only briefly acknowledged that she was not being a very good girlfriend because she ignored Ola trying to open up to her. Obviously what happened to Lily with the shaming was terrible, but she acted like Ola was the only one in the wrong for most of the season. Ola’s dad also sucked. I wish they expanded more on Ola and had a proper support for her instead of just trying to show it being resolved with a hug from dad and an alien sighting.

      yeah i dont like Lily's character. and I was kind of happy when she almost gave up the alien stuff. It is ridiculous, and I dont think it's realistic that Ola could stand to be around Lily. Like, what do they talk about. Because Ola doesn't care about aliens and that is all Lily talks about. I'm confused why they were ever a thing. Ola is very much a realist, and very matter of fact, and I'd think she'd go crazy being with someone like Lily.

Which they weren't. I thought they were a bad match from the very beginning. This show really goes Up to show why people are how they are, even bad people like groff or Hope, but It gets Away from the awfull sad story= redemption. Hope is a terrible person, no Matter what curcumstances moved her to where she IS and groff needs to actively mend his ways. He has our simpathy, but not our forgiveness. I think she her harshness comes from a different place:
      1. She grew up in a different time where what was permissible in schools was different and there were certain expectations of students. Even when Groff was headmaster, he was not ok with what the students were doing and was trying to put a stop to it. Remember too, there were different thoughts on how sex and sexuality should be approached when she was growing up. And quite frankly, very rarely are students' concerns treated seriously, at any level. Sure, there may be a forum here and there to pacify the masses, but very rarely does anything come of it. This mentality is further displayed in her interactions with Maeve, specifically with how willing she was to support Maeve in the gifted and talented program. In the past, schools have been regarded as only a place of academia, and all other concerns were elementary, which is why she was so focused on creating such a rigidly focused and disciplined atmosphere.
      2. The school had also received a lot of bad press (sex school) and she had the board breathing down her neck to make it better. If you notice, she didn't even get to the extreme punishment until the whole incident in France, among other things, which had the board openly threatening her position. That does not excuse her behaviour, but the reality is a lot of educators are backed into a corner by school administration and have to follow their rules or risk losing their jobs. It was even observed on a smaller scale with the "cool" teachers, one even punishing Otis when he spoke out during sex ed class because although he may have agreed with him, he didn't want to lose his job. As unfair as Hope may have been, she was simply the mouthpiece for the school board.

I'm projecting lmao but still...

But I definitely do not endorse his treatment of Adam throughout the season, cheating included. If he outgrew that relationship, he should have been mature enough to handle it better than he did. Eric just kept trying to change Adam, pressuring him to wear makeup and come out to his parents, and so basically telling Adam he just wasn't gay "enough" because of how he chose to perform his sexual identity. Honestly, what I love the most is the care writers put in friendships. Romantic relationships are messy just like teen loves usually are but whenever the worst time comes it's all about friendships. Characters grow mostly because of the support of their friends and not because and for the love interest. I think in that way they really departed from typical teen show narratives. Eric is a great friend but a shit boyfriend. Amy treats Steve badly but is Maeve's rock. Otis is just confusing but actually a good friend. And the moment Ruby invited her friends over was such a great one. So, I completely cheer for this shift of "friends I'll die for" instead of that toxic "partner I'll die for".

The whole deleting the voicemail was really bad, but when he told Maeve he didn't even tell her everything that was important. And honestly, I think Maeve forgave him way too quickly considering she's super feminist. Like, he messed with her life because he wanted to ''protect her'' (read : get with her) and after like a day she wasn't mad anymore. Also, the whole season he kept saying that she shouldn't be with Otis because he doesn't understand her (because he's not poor, or has an addict parent), which also led to Maeve and Aimee having a fight. Telling someone they shouldn't be around people who don't have the same background has them is pretty stupid IMO. But I don't think they were even dating when Motis kissed, so it wasn't really cheating. Basically, Isaac just gets in Maeve's head to get her to like him, that's how I see it.

I mean, first of all, Adam was basically out,(the entire school plus his dad knew) his mom was the only person that didn’t know, and I feel like Eric could have tried harder to understand how Adams relationship with his mum was (because Adam is obviously not super close with his parents). Also, Adam is an introvert. He doesn’t go out to clubs and stuff because he’s an introvert. How does one just simply not know anything about the guy they’re dating? And even if Adam wasn’t an introvert, he still might not express his queerness (I say queerness specifically because Adam is bi, not gay) the same way Eric does. The picnic scene almost killed me, truly. What if Adam just changed his mind? What if he just fell out of the mood? What if he really was just nervous to try anal for the first time? Eric shaming him and saying he “wasn’t properly gay” (the boy is bi godamnit!) was way out of line. Like what in the gaslight gatekeep girl boss is this shit? Honestly, this season made me so mad for Adam watching the way Eric treated him. He constantly got mad at Adam for not being ready to have sex, got mad when Adam wasn’t ready to come out to his mom and was clearly pressuring him to, also got mad at Adam when he didn’t conform to Eric’s idea of queerness, then kissed someone else and made it about his growth as a person and didn’t even seem to care about how it affected Adam. Adam put so much of himself into the relationship and did anything he could to try and make Eric happy yet not once did Eric TRULY appreciate it. If Eric wanted to be with someone already comfortable with themselves then he shouldn’t have even dated Adam in the first place because all he did was probably make Adam hate himself even more.

    I'm thinking about it more and i think i can see Viv's motivation for snatching headgirl. It's really simple. She was just jealous. She saw jackson and Cal getting closer and she saw Jackson standing up for Cal and listening to Cal all the time and she got bitter. She was very passive agressive this season. She did get over it in the end though.

    • @KitteniaSdlr
      @KitteniaSdlr Год назад +1

      I actually think it's really more about her ambition. She saw Hope as being a way for her to get to achieve a lot of things and she's very ambitious and smart and probably used to not being trusted with a lot of responsibility so when the opportunity came it was very appealing to her. And I think it was very conscious on Hope's side too because she is shown to be really manipulative and she saw right through Viv's ambition and insecurity and vulnerability. I never read Viv as a villain in this season and I thought it was very realistic too because we know that authoritarian figures do draw in vulnerable/insecure people, that doesn't mean those people are bad, they are victims of manipulation and they make some bad choices too it's true but it doesn't make them bad people. Let's remember Viv is supposed to be 17 and impressionable when faced with a confident, charismatic adult in a position of power.

It was also awful how he shamed Adam for not being ready to have sex or come out to his mom.

    Although I don’t condone Eric’s behavior (the kiss in Nigeria), I think as a young out person, he wanted to kiss the Nigerian guy knowing that Adam was his bf but knowing he wouldn’t have an opportunity like this again. He found community and people he could be himself with, not hiding, being proud. And I think it was one of those times of “I want to do it because I want this for myself” not necessarily thinking about whether he was hurting Adam or not. He did it because he wanted to experience that and he would have regretted it if he hadn’t. Essentially he got rid of his inhibitions and decided to live in the moment, and I think it’s a great decision he made for himself. Not a great decision he made for his relationship with Adam. Though, in my opinion they needed to break up anyway. Adam needs to figure himself out.

    I feel like the problem with Eric rn is that they made him have a necessary part of his development during a bad time. Him coming to to his hometown and having to closet but also seeing the beauty of the underground gay scene is something that should've happened BEFORE Adam. That way when he dates Adam and adam goes through his closet almost internally homophobic moments, Eric is brought back to the feeling he has to hide again and then brings up those toxic expectations on a closeted dude. He is a teenager after all and teenagers do be weaponizing those emotions casually for some reason. (Keep the break up even because Adam's shitty poem was so beautiful and heartbreaking.)
    In this way, we experience the same beats and drama, WITHOUT making Eric entirely unrecognizable as a character because holy damn did he do a TON of out of character things this season.
    As for the NB character, I would've liked to see them outside of just being NB as a character, but besides that they were a great inclusion that should've been around earlier in the story.

    Great rundown! My thoughts:
    1. Ruby needed the character growth. It was great to watch her rejection, because she was used to social acceptance (despite her financial status somehow). I just realised she didn't pop up again after the France episode, but I was fairly satisfied with where they led her.
    2. I agree that Adam was done dirty, but like Ruby, he also needed that character growth, although admittedly Adam's journey is tough AF. Love & romance isn't all there is to life, and Adam needs to understand who he is as a person. I didn't like that they broke his heart, but I don't hate it for his character either.
    3. I never realised it about Eric, but you hit the nail on the head about him. He was obviously very impatient and pushy with Adam throughout their relationship, and I was amazed that Adam didn't regress and retreat.
    4. I thought Maeve had the weakest character growth this season. She basically spent 8 episodes ding-donging between two guys and chasing her mom around. We didn't discover anything new about her character. But I'm excited to see what the US stint does for her, and where that will take her thing with Otis. Now that they're all in the final year, it looks like Netflix is priming for only 1-2 seasons left of the story. Maybe Season 4 with Maeve in the US in parallel with everyone else back home, and Season 5 as graduation nears (or maybe Season 4 as final even)?
    5. Otis' mom's arc was about older pregnancies, though they didn't really go deeper into her anxieties. I quite liked that as a change of pace from the major theme of the series. BUT I hated that they failed Joy's paternity test. Like wtf? It completely undid all the progress the blended family made together. I thought that was just some shit-stirring. I would have liked for them to explore the older parenting theme deeper once they bring Joy home. I don't think they've done very much for Otis' mom in general. They could have explored the complicated mother-son relationship deeper, and made it a constant theme throughout (like Leonard's hang-up in TBBT). I know that featuring Jean's other relationships give her more agency as an individual, but I'm really not that interested in the sex life of a 48yo woman - I want to see a sex therapist mending her relationship with son (which they've done in staccatos over the 3 seasons but it feels disjointed overall).
    6. Viv's character in general was odd because they've just created her in service to the plot. A mini-antagonist? Here's Viv. Comic relief? Here's Viv. Ex machina to overthrow season's main antagonist? Here's Viv!
    Overall, I completely concur that Season 3 was satisfying because they fleshed out a lot of the supporting characters. Unfortunately, I think that's been at the expense of the main characters (come to think of it - wtf has Otis done?? Like Maeve, he'd just been flip-flopping). Am excited to see how they bring everyone's arcs to satisfying conclusions.
    Personally, I would LOVE to live in a place like Moordale - cosy, quiet, and calming with lush greens. I would love to have grown up in a house like Otis', and like him be on the threshhold of adulthood, ready to take on the world while knowing there's always a safe haven waiting for me back home.

    I just, I didn't get Eric this season. He felt like a different character from season 1&2. I also just didn't get why I'm was so pissy with Adam and being out. Adam already came out in front of literally the entire school and his father just for Eric. So what if he's nervous about coming out to his mom? Why was he so impatient? Adam was really trying.
    And what the fuck was with Maeve this season? Why was it so easy for Isaac to manipulate her? I do not buy that he was a great guy.
    Also, Maeve and Otis had so few scenes together, I feel like a lot of the season one chemistry has been lost, and I just don't give a shit about them getting together anymore. They felt really forced this season.

    What really annoyed me about Eric was that Adam tried so, SO hard to communicate better and try to be more open (like going to ms sands for help after school and genuinely caring about his education and relationships) and Eric did NOTHING. he got defensive over the smallest of things and didn’t try to reach out and see that Adam was struggling. What really stood out was the scene before Adam and Eric actually had sex bc Adam reached out, took measures to thoughtfully communicate to Eric (by turning around), and got his point across. If Eric had just waited a little in the woods and not just ran away, the entire problem could be solved. It’s all miscommunication which is the worse way to create drama in romantic scenes

    not a fan of how 99% of cal's plot points and scenes were simply about the fact that they're nonbinary. they could've talked about so much more than just that. it was great representation, but that's the problem. cal wasn't a character, just a representation.

    • @Ray03595
      @Ray03595 2 года назад

      and i still feel like i dont understand nonbinary. For example, the principal said Cal doesn't have to wear a skirt, just dont wear loose fitting pants. This is still a problem for Cal and she still protests against the principal over this??? I think that was a very reasonable solution. How is it that glamour queen Ruby can abide by the school rules, but Cal is so special and has to be a rebel, and Hope is in the wrong for being flexible?

    bit of a dumptruck of a thought but- i think the whole point of the show is to see how in life, we all make mistakes or we're all capable of doing crappy things, and how not everyone is painted as a ''hero'' or a 'villain'' solely because of the things they've done in their life so far. and so we get so many moments that throw us off (like ruby and otis's "i love you"-"that's nice" situation, or the, in my view, unexpected fertility problem that hope has, or in s2, jean's pregnancy) and that's because that's what happens when you live, nobody can be perfect or live a life that they were expecting, and in everyone's case, no matter how long they've lived, people still learn.
    so the show has all of those unsatisfying relationship dynamics, like how eric, who's out, grows so impatient with adam, who's closeted. it's because they're young, and they sho'nuff not gonna be perfect.
    in my opinion that's what makes the realism for me, because life as a teenager (or just as a human in general) sometimes you make the stupidest decisions. and yeah to be fair, hope's headmaster biz at moordale was veeeeery dramatised and got me thinking at the humiliation scene "that's literally a crime???" but because i defend sex education with my LIFE and SOUL i think it just made it way more fun to watch, the realism in that department didn't phase me much, it's just nice to use ur fav tv series as escapism,
    and that's exactly what the world in sex education is, because it's like all the best and the worst and the over-dramatic parts of school melted together

  • @zwierzification
    @zwierzification 2 года назад +25

    Unpopular opinion but I don't think Adam and Ruby got done dirty. They had a lot of issues and had a lot of growth but that doesn't mean they were owed relationships. The fact that Otis wants deep connections is not toxic, it is not his fault Ruby has never had one and so falls hard when she experiences something like this. And he does his best to be honest with her when he realises he doesn't feel the same way. With Eric it's shit that he cheats but it's also understandable that he doesn't want to wait for Adam to fix his anger issues and fully step out of the closet (cause let's face it, there is no indication these things are SOLVED). Romantic relationships shouldn't be prizes for personal growth and the fact that Ruby and Adam grew is something that will benefit them in the end, despite the break-ups.

    Overall this series seemed disjointed in parts and not as good as the other 2. There were too many plot lines started and not comprehensively developed. Lilly's alien weirdness getting time priority over Ola's life upheaval and trauma. Both story lines weren't completed fully and a bit rushed at the end - bit insensitive when you're talking about major teenage issues. Otis being Lily's friend at the end and her saviour?! It seemed as if they had too many writers working on separate story lines with poor coordination between them. Less in this case would have definitely felt more.

    I disagree that Eric and Otis were wrong, or that they're just mean and heartless. I understand how much Ruby and Adam evolved this season and thus everyone wants them to be happy, they deserve it, but Otis and Eric also deserve to be able to be themselves. Otis didn't love Ruby, but being caught up in the friends with benefits situation, decided to try and see if a relationshio can work. She got attached real quick, whereas he was still not over Maeve. That's just how it was, it isn't his fault, he tried. In that situation, it would have been wrong for Otis to say I love you back. He did the right thing, following what he felt. The same with Eric, although not that straightforward. He finally felt that 2 huge parts of his identity can actually worj together, while all his life he considered them incompatible. He was able to finally feel free to be himself, while with Adam he still has to walk with baby steps. Although yeah, if he actually loves Adam he could support him in that journey. So I hope Adam and Eric can work things out, while Otis should be with Maeve, because they both are really really in love with each other

    Your Eric rant was on point. One thing I will say is I don't believe Adam was in the closet. Everyone knew they were together except his mum. That's why the holding hands gesture in s2 was symbolic that he is not ashamed.People in the closet don't hold hands with his bf in public and declare his feelings on stage infront of his father and the entire school. Adam is just an introvert and maybe he doesn't like to go to clubs and makeup ain't his thing. Eric putting makeup on him was a fun dare I say being silly together. I hate that story aspect, that he is ashamed because he doesn't wanna do stereotypical gay stuff. They literally didn't show me as an viewer Adam being ashamed and toxic to Eric for me to make sense of Eric's dumb excuse for cheating and breaking up with Adam.
