🚨🚨🚨for non Australians: here's the explanation for Malakai
There are some complexities that only Australians will pick up on, the fact that Malakai was an Indigenous Aboriginal Australian, there's a lot more depth to the experience. Aboriginal people are treated terribly by police in Australia (hence the brutality scene), but it was so nice seeing him connect with other indigenous people in his life. The whole going off into the woods but is like going "out bush". Indigenous people are very connected to the Australian land in many aspects of spirituality and it was an experience for him to reconnect with the land, that's why he comes back healed and grounded. We're probably never going to see what happened there/why because it's a very personal experience and Aussies just know that and respect the fact that he was just reconnecting with the land, it would be interesting to have an insight tho if they did film it.
Idk if that was a good explanation but hopefully it'll help people who don't know much abt Australian culture.

I think Sasha really accurately represents a real type of person. A person that desperately wants to look like they're accepting, open, and socially progressive. It becomes apart of how they identify themselves but it can also be quite shallow/superficial. She wants to be the type of person that would be in a relationship with someone on the spectrum, but doesn't actually want the reality of dating someone on the spectrum.

yeah they honestly made Harper so unlikeable. She also treated Amerie horribly, I found it so weird how everything was forgotten at the end??? Harper treated Dusty like shit when he genuinely just regretted the threesome and felt bad about it, dunked him in front of the whole school, talked about how Malakai gave her an orgasm in front of the hole school (and Amerie), saying it was consensual (yeah idk about that either lol), and basically didn't take any responsibility for her actions what so ever and only said "I didn't do those things to punish you" as if she didn't purposely turned the whole school against Amerie over a map that both she and her did together.... what happened to Harper was horrible, but nooooo way can you discard the things she did to others. I was genuinely ANGRY when I saw the show and how it seemed to just brush over these things??? and all of this because she didn't let you in ONE night when she was having a boy over, and had no way knowing what had happened to you and actually earlier on tried to ring you and find you

    • @Thatgenderconfused3mo

Harper was just a massive asshole that only cared about what was going on in her life (completely understandable I get it). She had little to no remorse about everything that had happened. I was also like “absolutely not how do you just forgive someone like that once they explain what had been happening to them? They literally ISOLATED YOU??” I genuinely have been through something similar and I have yet to forgive that person for isolating me especially bc they KNEW about my mental health. I truly do not give a shit about your situation it’s purely shitty to isolate someone in such a shit way. I hate Harper. I feel for her but I can not stand her

Honestly, I hate both Harper and Amery.
Harper isolated Amery because Amery left her alone twice. She left her at the concert for a dude she didn't even like, so alone Harper almost got assaulted by a gang.
Secondly, Amery said Harper should sleep at her place, but when she came, she hid. So alone, Harper got attacked by her father.
Unrealistic, and Harper should have said to Amery about her father. But Amery should also call her and try to find her. She kicked out the dude anyway. She was self- presented as a great bf "always there for her," but she wasn't.

YUP honestly for me this kinda falls into the realm of sexual assault cuz no matter the intentions there was a blatant power dynamic between Harper (and Dusty) being pretty much fully aware of the situation and Malakai being emotionally and physically (being high) in a bad place and not present. you can’t consent drunk so in my mind this is pretty much the same thing. I really hope they’re able to explore how people don’t take this stuff seriously when it happens to a guy and that he gets some form of justice for everything that happened to him that day and that it’s not swept under the rug. some people might think I’m being dramatic but it really doesn’t sit right with me. if they give Harper an easy redemption cuz of her trauma I’m gonna be pissed. hope they explore Malakai’s healing and some form of justice while also getting into trauma cycles and how harpers past experiences play a part in her warped judgement

    • @maggiedk
      @maggiedk Год назад +677

I def agree with you, BUT I am confused as to why people in these comments seem to be focusing more on Harper's wrongdoing when Dusty is the one that initiated it 🤔 don't get me wrong, what she did was absolutely wrong, but I think Dusty deserves more criticism overall personally.
Also, Harper's trauma absolutely isn't an excuse, but it is an important factor in the warped way she viewed the situation (trying to "help" Malakai by hooking up with him). She's clearly been using sex as an unhealthy coping mechanism for her trauma (not at all uncommon for SA survivors, sadly) and that's why she thought that it could help Malakai. She was wrong, and it's not okay that she did that, but I think her twisted logic is at least more deserving of empathy than Dusty, who seemed to only have his own interests in mind every step of the way.

The Malakai body slam scene seems to be at least inspired by a real event last year where a cop body slammed an Indigenous teen for ‘talking back’ and when the video circulated the media got mad at the teen’s ‘attitude’ whereas the cop got literally no punishment because his boss said “he was having a bad day”

to explain Malakai’s storyline when he went to the bush as an Aussie (tho i am white), it’s part of aboriginal culture in Australia to return to bush. Malakai is himself an aboriginal person and thats why the police brutality scene is so heartbreaking as its such a common thing for POC and especially aboriginal people to be targetted by police officers. The returning to country is common tradition to reconnect with the country and nature. I’m so glad that the show represented our country’s original owners experience as it truly isnt shown enough in media, especially worldwide!

I didn't know how much non-Aussies would get Malakai's storyline and the way Missy and her brother fit into it- this is a good description. White person as well but quick summary of relevant history: Aboriginal people are only 3% of the Australian population today and were subject to genocide through the government policy of taking children from parents ( no not-gross way to put this, but darker kids were trained as indentured servants, lighter kids taught to 'pass for white', all had their cultural ties destroyed and were made to act a certain way and subject to horrific abuse similar to what happened in North America with First Nations people) and putting them in orphanages in an attempt to 'breed them out' (this was the aim as written in government documents and the law), so literally a genocide, in addition to the Frontier War murders which are only just being discussed more.
The victims of this policy are known as the Stolen Generations, and the policy only stopped in 1970. For context I'm 24, my parents were 10 when this stopped officially, and many would argue it continues due to higher rates of kids being taken into foster care, intergenerational trauma, etc. Aboriginal people are the most incarcerated demographic on earth and are most of the kids in gaol underage in this country. There are consistent patterns of death in custody and police brutality, plus trauma around government authorities and police as they were/are those taking kids. Active discrimination and mistreatment of Aboriginal people is still everywhere. Re. Malakai being referred to as 'brother'- Many Aboriginal people will refer to each other by family names- elders are often referred to as Aunty or Uncle, as with Uncle Jack Charles, an actor and notable public figure who just passed.

While Harpers trauma does explain a lot of the things she did, it doesn’t excuse it, so I hope that he faces consequences and realizes that what she did was fucked up instead of just placing all the blame on Amerie. And then with Dusty and Spider, they just have to go. Like, those three boys get zero punishment for trying to frame an innocent woman as a sex offender while Amerie, who just so happens to be a brown girl, gets socially outcasted for a sex map that she didn’t even make on her own. I really hope the four of them face consequences and learn to grow and show character development from their actions because what they did cannot just be waved off.

People do you stuff like that and it’s not really understandable, but it definitely happens all the time. I think she's lashing out at her because she blames her, but also because she's envious of how she's living a normal life like everyone else, whereas Harper is traumatized and I'm certain she feels different, reality feels different... everything feels darker and more twisted and confusing and scary. And her friend who could have just let her in is... just fine. That's how I saw it. What she did wasn't okay... but she shouldn't be demonized for it. She needs therapy, not punishment.

I know that Harper had no ill intentions and wanted him to feel secure and loved after what happened but I consider sleeping with a person who is in in an emotionally vulnerable state, high and drunk (and also still sort of involved with someone else?) very, very questionable behavior and ought to be more than just called out by a side character. Imo, it could've been properly addressed and she should've apologized.
The writers made Sasha comment how shitty that was but then Harper had her big moment and claimed it was consensual? I can't tell if they wanted to show how men getting taken advantage of gets swept under the rug by people or if they actually sided with Harper on that one.

I really hope they explore Malakai not being seen as any sort of victim cuz he’s male and how he deserves a form of justice he was not given. Sometimes things aren't made for you in mind and thats okay :) when they're not, you just have to do the work. Malakai's arc is written by and for Aboriginal people and while I really appreciate so many people explaining Aboriginal culture to the world in the comments, we also have a responsibility (as the outsiders) to "pay the rent" and do the work ourselves. Google is free. I think it was fleshed out appropriately for what happened. Australians know exactly what is happening in those scenes. Honestly I think Harper was just incredibly traumatized and needed to blame someone. And amerie was … there. She didn’t really blame her dad in the beginning, which is kind of understandable because it’s her dad. In one scene amerie said she is always there for Harper and Harper is really mad at her because in her eyes she wasn’t there for her when she needed her the most. It’s not really logical but again she has been through a lot. Like I was wondering what happened and almost everything I could think of happened (or almost happened). Of course that doesn’t excuse any of Harper‘s actions. Even if she didn’t want to hurt amerie and just wanted to sleep with the boys it was fucked up. Especially the threesome. A Malakai explanation!
Malakai is Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal) and we have a very deep connection to the land. Going and spending time in the forest (out bush) can be incredibly healing and it's always very personal. It's why Missy (another Aboriginal character) was so worried, it's why they have certain jewellery and use certain words like "budoo" (dick). In one of the first scenes you can spot an "always was always will be" sticker on Missys car and that's why the boys say "nice car centrelink". It's a discriminatory thing because of stereotypes in Australia. That's why the police brutality scene is important. Australia was and still is dealing with a lot of police brutality issues, our incarceration rate is the highest in the world, we've had over 400 deaths in custody in the past 30 years and unfortunately racism is incredibly subtle here, it's mostly microaggressions more than blatant racism.
Malakai deserved better, but through culture and connections he'll heal in time, even if he never forgets it🖤💛❤️

Okay I've watched through the vid and gosh it was good! It's so nice seeing an Australian show be covered by someone else, and your commentary has had me LIVING on Tiktok. It's so great.
In regards to Harper and Amerie, a part of me wonders if Harper's 'hatred' of Amerie actually has more to do with her hatred of herself, especially after her assault. After having grown up together, I can see Harper and Amerie viewing each other as extensions of themselves- that's why Harper goes after the men that Amerie is interested in and is why their 'break up' hurts so much, but it's also why Harper did it to begin with. Hurting Amerie was a projection of the pain she already felt in the face of her trauma.
Just some thoughts! I've been thinking a lot about the show since I watched it.

It’s prob because of all the Aussie references that fly over non-Australians heads that didn’t make it as popular in the US, like, this show is heavy in Australian references, the eshays, the slang, the small details in how the classroom is set up, the teachers behaviour towards the students, the subtle details about Indigenous Aussies and walkabout country (i think that’s what it’s called?). It’s all very Australian and would be nostalgic to older Australians, and would be relatable to teen Australians. (The stuff about Aboriginal culture would be understood by Australians and I saw many people from outside of Australia not understanding what a lot of it was)
Example, the rich boys calling Amerie and her friends Centrelink, and them calling the boys rapist back. Its a funny scene, but it makes it twice as funnier when you know what Centrelink is and you understand why she called them rapists, especially since they’re private school kids
It’s a good show and that too is what made it popular, but it’s just not AS popular in the US as some ppl thought it would be, in part due to the references

@@yasmineguerin2852 difference is that the more k-dramas you watch the more Korean references you start to pick up as it starts to become common across almost all k-dramas. Kinda like tropes, the more you watch of it you start to notice similarities. There aren’t rlly that many Australian targeted shows like heartbreak high that are filled with Australian “tropes”. “Home and away” even as Australia’s most iconic tv show isn’t steeped in references and is mostly targeted towards an older audience because of how long running it is.
That’s why heartbreak high got so popular in the first place, there rlly aren’t many shows like heartbreak high, which contributed to its sudden rise in popularity, especially in Australia which then spread overseas. There’s “little lunch” and “the inbestigators” that may trigger nostalgia due to them taking place in primary school but none focusing on teens specifically. They’re both funny, and have many Aussie references, but still only about little kids.
Main point is, there are pretty much no other Australian shows like heartbreak high so subtle references go straight over non-Aussies heads. No other Australian show would mention Centrelink, or tuckshop, or eshays.
I could say “h2o: just add water” is the closest teen Australian show to become sort of popular overseas but that is because it hardly has any Australian references, it’s pretty much like any other American show but with an Australian accent

While I don’t think it excuses her actions, I think it’s important to understand hyper sexuality as a reaction/response to trauma, specifically sexual trauma. harper says multiple times that things “just happened” which is a common thing among victims of SA. it’s a coping mechanism in which victims attempt to regain control of their sexuality and their body by acting overly sexual and engaging in risky sexual behaviors. this is why harper hooks up with both of amerie’s crushes, not necessarily just to get at Amerie but because she is traumatized and is reacting in a very normal way for victims.

She was mad at Amerie for not being there for her when she needed her most and also I feel like she blaimed it all at her just so she could be angry at someone. Because her trauma wasn't caused by one person, it was hard to be angry at world for being unfair so she blaimed the one person that was there. It wasn't fair but a realistic trauma respond. She was broken, lonely, terrified and didn't know how to deal with it (after all she is just 17) and lashed out.

It's something I thought about while watching the show for the first time bc it made me wonder if non-Australians would get what was going on at all given the show is 100% targeted to an aussie audience. I'm getting the impression that in S2 more Indigenous culture will be explored through Malakai and Missy. I hope so anyway, swear to fucking god I've seen soo little Aboriginal youth representation in mainstream media where they actually talk about their connection to country lmfao.
Would absolutely recommend researching Aboriginal history too, it's annoying seeing non-Australians not acknowledging Malakai and Missy as blak because of their lighter skin. There's a whole history there that's important to know and respect when discussing their characters.

I thought of Australian aboriginals as like Native Americans and Native Americans aren't black. Because Australian natives are well...Native to Australia and not necessarily Africa since humans migrated, I get confused when people put them in my racial group. Are they not a different racial group? Or are Blak and black different things? Like they aren't referring to like Black Africans, they are referring to a different group? Is it a similar spelling but different meaning? Like i'm confused

@@yourfavoritepessimisticexi8041 These are some good questions! It does kind of highlight why I was saying it's important to research though. I don't think I can appropriately explain the gravity of Aboriginal history but I'll give it a go.
With absolutely no disrespect, Aboriginal Australians and Native Americans are not comparable. Aboriginal culture is one of the oldest cultures in the world dating back at least 50,000 years. In comparison Native Americans date back approx. 15,000 years.
Of course having a culture that spans such an incredible amount of time as 50,000 years does mean it's harder get a clear understanding of genetic heritage but the real problems are caused (of course) by British colonialism.
In the 1700's when the British invaded Australia they attempted to completely erase Aboriginal identity resulting in what we now call the Stolen Generations (too much too explain here.. would recommend reading about it though). This is why a large section of Australia's Aboriginal people are fairly light-skinned even though of course before British invasion that was not at all the case.
Aboriginal Australians do have strong genetic ties to the Africa of 75,000 years ago, which may be why the term Black applies. But to be honest I'm not 100% if that's why or if it's just simply because Aboriginal people pre-Stolen Generation have very dark skin.
Blak is a fairly modern term used just for First Nations people. Possibly to separate the identities of Aboriginal descendants and African descendants but again.. I'm not too sure. There is a real struggle in the search for identity amongst First Nations people, the generational trauma is deeply ingrained.
Sorry I have no idea if that even helps explain.. but I hope it at least helps you understand a bit more of the history and why connection to country was so impactful on Malakai lmaoo
TLDR: Aboriginal Australians are one of the oldest cultures in the world. Partly descended from Africa but definitely a separate identity to African-Australians or African-Americans.

Each character made mistakes that any teenager would make, and they all coped with it in their own ways whether that be shutting off their emotions, blaming someone unnecessarily and channeling their anger out on them (*cough* Harper *cough*). It was so relatable to watch them all make those decisions, and being frustrated by seeing them making the wrong decisions on how to handle their problems made it even more relatable

many First Nations people like to connect with the country and land so they can spiritually heal. i personally have been to camps where we just camp outdoors and it really eases me and it just honestly feels like all my problems just float away. malakai probably just talked about what was going on with Missy's brother and connected with the land by camping out and just walking through the country to be put as ease.
im also trans, gay and asexual, and possibly autistic (my family isn't currently financially able to even consider a diagnosis) and all the representation just makes me so happy !! i really relate with ca$h because i really wouldn't want to do anything sexual because i just dont enjoy it and it makes me feel kind of sick and anxious. darren being under the trans umbrella is just great, i don't think i've ever seen any major trans representation, though they should have gotten the hint with ca$h, he was obviously really uncomfortable.

I really do hope this show gets a second season because it was just so good. I went through so many emotions especially anger.
AMERIE is the best main character ever, she isn't problematic, very nice and actually a very good friend.
SASHA and MISSY for me were just off. I know the incest wall was messed up, but they just dropped her like she killed their mother or something. They got over what she wrote on the incest wall so why didn't they forgive her?? It was just rubbed me off the wrong way and felt very fake.
HARPER made me angry from episode 1 - 7. Even after she gave her reason, her behaviour still wasn't justifiable. She could have communicated what she went through. The whole boyfriend thing is a pattern. She literally took any man that AMERIE thought of liking. Also there is no way that the threesome was consensual. MALAKAI was traumatized, DUSTY was high and possibly drunk, and she was high but quite away because only her seemed to enjoy it. Anyways I am still trying to find a place in my heart for the drama queen herself.
I really wanted to like DUSTY😭😭😭😭. Why did he have to be terrible. Waiting for his redemption arc 😁.
SPIDER is hands down the worst character next to HARPER and DUSTY but a part of me felt sorry for him. I thought he likes MALAKAI tho 🤭🤭, I was wrong. I hope he finds love and becomes better .
Personally I loved ANT, he just felt like a child to me. He just needs a better group of friends because DUSTY and SPIDER are not it. Maybe he should hang out with MALAKAI??
DARREN is a CHARACTER. Their sexuality wasn't their personality and I loved that. I did not like the way they were putting pressure on CASH, loved everything else about them though.
CASH just needed more time to figure himself out. Life for him is hard. He finally did !!!!! Love CASH.
QUINNI is a DARLING!!!!! That is all that needs to be said.
