    It also doesn't take itself too seriously! Each character has moments when they're completely right about things, and moments when they're completely wrong (when Jean guesses Jakob's dating life, for example). It humanizes every single character in practically every possible way. I think this is part of why it's so relatable; in Ginny and Georgia, Ginny her voiceovers never had to face the possibility that maybe she and all her angst were in the wrong. Sex Education never does this, it gives the characters the opportunity to learn and grow and be human while also confronting the fact that they're growing up and inevitably will say and do stupid things. It strikes the perfect balance that I think a lot of shows miss out on.

    Another reason why I love this show is that the characters look like actual teenagers. In most (american) teen shows, the characters all look like models in their 20s. And I think this can be quite harmful for teens because it is another unrealistic beauty standard. The characters in sex education are not ugly by any means, but they look like actual people and that makes them interesting.
    Also, I think the show actually targets multiple demographic groups. It seems like a show about high school and for high schoolers at first, but it also shows the stories of the older generations with the teachers and parents. And it shows beautifully and hilariously that sex doesn't end when you get older, there is still that awkwardness and a lot to learn, and that's perfectly fine and realistic.
    I'm 20 and I found it quite fun to reflect on my teeange years that just passed, to realize that all of us are sometimes insecure about these things through this show :)

      I feel like most in European shows teenagers look more like teenagers
      Like in Derry Girls (Irish show, would highly recommend) despite the actors being in their late twenties to mid thirties they all look like actual teenagers, and behave like actual teenagers, wearing ill fitted uniforms and comfy clothes, being awkward and insecure around their crushes or popular kids, making mistakes as teens do
      Compare that to Riverdale, with (slightly) younger actors, but they all look older than teenagers and act like they’re in their twenties at least, they dress to perfection (with the girls often showing a lot of skin, which is fine, teenagers can dress like that, but it’s kinda sexualising “minors”), and speak so strange and formally, and aren’t awkward in the least, never insecure or anxious (as far as I’ve seen)

    I feel like the beauty of sex education is that it uses a lot of tropes with its characterization, but still each character has their own level of uniqueness that surpasses the trope. For example Maeve, she originally encompasses the im not like other girls trope, when digging deeper we can see that she's not exactly that way. Although she is alternative and "different" and all together just tries to appear scary mean and tough, she never tears down people just for being different from her or conforming to social norms. Like when otis was describing her alternative taste in music he said "but shes not a snob, she'll listen to pop". I know im over thinking this but i just love all the characters, and i feel like in each one of them the viewer is able to see a bit of themselves. Like otis is the stereotypical shy awkard kid, but he's fine with that, he likes being "a guy in the corner", he has a suprising amount of confidence and self assurance for being so quote on quote awkward. Also I just live for when asked what maeve likes she says "complex female characters" and her style is so cool. also eric is my favorite character its so refreshing to have a character that excels the gay bestfriend token used for a sprinkle of representation. they made him a real human being rather than a friend whos screentime consists of sassy one liners that do nothing to push forward the plot. his personality is amazing and his humor is spot on. not to mention the scene of his arrival at the dance was one of my favorite scenes ever, like he looks so amazing and god i just loved it so much like it was perfect. and the shows portrayal of male friendship that was really nice. despite all their differences otis and eric were best friends and to me it was like they were platonic soulmates. love to see it. its a great show lol

    i don't like the adam and eric dynamic. i feel like it brings out the "he's homophobic cuz he's gay" "he bullies you cuz he's in love w you" thing and that's just... not it. and on the end of season 2 i guess eric was torn between adam and rahim and i feel like he shouldn't pick any of them. he said he doesn't feel like he can be himself around rahim but if they make adam and eric be together in the next season it's gonna be like "oh okay he doesn't feel like himself w rahim but he feels very comfy around the boy that abused and bullied him for 2 years"

      i really love the enemies to lovers trope but yes, this one's toxic. the thing is i REALLY _really_ like both adam and eric. they are my favs in the show. i love the idea of them dating and it sucks to know that my ship is a toxic one. something that consoles me is the fact that eric told adam how shit he felt when he was being bullied and adam also acknowledged what he had done. the only thing this ship needs to attain perfection is add a lil “friends” part between enemies and lovers. it's so weird and unrealistic that eric let his bully give him a bj and kissed him.
      also, am i the only one that didn't really think that adam was homophobic? he just said stupid shit because he had NO reason to bully eric. also, i'm not defending him. there is never a situation where you can call someone the f-word and condemn them for being “feminine”. i'm just saying i could always look past his “homophobe” façade and knew he was saying those things to eric because he had nothing else to bully him for.

    i’d like to add to what you said abt the cliches: they don’t feel inauthentic in this because it makes sense for their character, normally shows make the “edgy teen girl with dyed hair” just a random girl who just like that cause she _like that_ but for maeve, it really makes sense because growing up she couldn’t really trust her mother and had to really fend for herself which explains why she’s closed off, the whole dyed hair and edgyness is a mask that protects her as it makes people think of her what She wants them to think, it makes her feel like she has control over their perception of her. being vulnerable is something really scary to her, due to how she had to grow up; you can see her mask slowly deteriorate as her character develops and as she opens up to the protagonist (Otis). We initially see her as the generic edgy teen but after understanding her character we realise she’s much more than that. TV shows usually give no depth to the “edgy character” (since they’re usually just a character foil for another character) which is why they’re often ridiculed and seen as “cliche”

  • @yellowcrocs9000
    @yellowcrocs9000 3 года назад +8

    imo the reason the tropes work so well is because they get backed up by the characters family history and current situations. like ofc Maeve doesn't feel anyone gets her, she's been abandoned by her family who is meant to uplift and support her, it makes sense that Adam acts how he does he lives in a toxic household where emotions are repressed. half the time shows create these tropes without thinking about the characters surroundings which is why they feel so obnoxious and unnecessary.

    I was so excited to see another creator talk about this show! I agree with all your points, I’ve watched this show many times and adore it. On the topic of depicting underage sex, while I understand the touchy and questionable nature of it being so explicit, I appreciate that the show goes out of its way to show how awkward it is and one or both partners usually ends up having a bad time. I think it’s something many teens can relate to and I feel it emphasizes the importance of consent and proper communication between partners for a positive experience. In an industry where shows like riverdale and the like exist to target the same demographic, I think it’s important for teens and young adults to understand that sex is often very different than the pedestal we’re conditioned to put it on. I really wish I had a show like this when I was going through high school. I appreciate the inclusion of an asexual character as well. Anyways, amazing video!

In a lot of teen shows, at least to me, friendships aren't treated with the same importance as romantic relationships, so it was wonderful to see a show put so much time and care into developing the platonic relationships. Friendships in high school are really important, and I think a lot of the audience could find reliability in Otis and Eric, or Jackson and Viv. Even in a show about navigating sex and romance, there are still things people can relate to if their high school experience didn't involve either of those things.

    what i love about sex education is that it appeals to the teenage / YA audience by being quirky, but it's not trying too hard. too many teen shows on netflix nowadays can never really nail on the head the right vibe when it comes to creating an iconic show, but sex education has the perfect balance.

    i think sex education introduces the characters as a cliché trope but throughout time shows how that’s not their only personality trait, which makes them realistic. clichés exist cuz they happen but once you break them there’s so much more, something rare to see in coming of age shows.

    what I think makes the level of representation especially amazing was how much they didn't make a big deal of representing these types of people. Rather than these characters being defined by their colour or sexuality or even both, instead those things are simply one small part of their characters meaning they felt more fleshed out and genuine instead of being there simply for the sake of affirmative action.

    I think the two things I most like about the show is the diversity, racially and sexually and the way they break the stereotypes by showing they are people, like with Erick he is the sassy gay black best friend but this is not his entire personality, it’s like he is real person not just the basic estereotipe that is funny mean for no reason, he has a history, has conflicts

    I think it's great that the show refers to teenagers bc in fact is in this ages that ppl start approaching to sex, with ppl over 20 is already too late, they have already done their experiences (at least in Europe bc thanks to tiktok I'm starting to discover that in the USA girls actually wait till marriage)

  • @JulianSteve

    First off, I like your shirt Rumi. Second, thank you so much for bringing up the explicit nature of the show. This is one of the issues I have with 'Sex Education.' Besides most of the actors/actresses are 22+ years of age portraying teenagers, but the overly dramatic sex scenes are not needed, especially if this is for a "teenage demographic." Then, the numerous love triangles does not sit well with me... Really, the writers are encouraging the normalization of infidelity amongst teenagers in a friend group? I get it, this is SOME teenagers lives, but not ALL! Not all teenagers are worrying about some (or most) of the material 'Sex Education' has to offer on relatability. I wish the show creator was more cautious on their approach with this show. I know, it's not their job to be worrying about other peoples' children, but still.
    Sorry for the long comment, I wanted to say some of my thoughts on 'Sex Education'😭💯

    • @redroses3893
      @redroses3893 3 года назад +8

      I think it’s really relatable even if you’re not actually having sex as a teenager. A lot of what they talk about isn’t actually about *sex* but just slightly involves it. It can be an issue you have with or without sex, but that’s definitely just my opinion. I do think the show is unnecessarily ranchy tho lol.

    I think the show is excellent but I don't think it has staying power,I watch it then forget about what I watched a week later.There isn't a lot of discourse to have with this show and it centers adults at times which I find unnecessary

    tbh I love the show but find it sad how people think they aren't sexualised? there was a lesbian couple at the start of the show who were shown in an explicit sex scene and they were only in it for one episode, yet the gay male characters are in it for seasons upon seasons and nothing is shown of them.

  • @alananimus9145
    @alananimus9145 3 года назад

    With sex education I think it is a commentary both on what it's like actually being a pubescent individual and with the damage that adult uncomfortably does to someone going through puberty. The awkward dynamic of adults with puberty is the damaging factor. What makes sex education different I think is that it doesn't sexualize puberty the way a lot of other teen dramas do. Instead it acknowledges that teens are sexual individuals. It's a nuanced but important difference.

    Really agree, Sex Education is a very intelligent and thoughtful show. I agree that the characters are very relatable and that there is good representation. Perhaps this is because it is a British show and Britain is now a very diverse community with significant cross community interaction - especially for Gen Z. We are also free from some of the pressure groups, especially faith groups that in the US appear to exert much more influence on what can be discussed in the public square (kind of ironic in 'the land of the free')

    I don’t think that the explicit parts are an issue because of the way they are portrayed, the show doesn’t over sexualise the characters and it doesn’t pretend the characters are adults it shows what some real high school relationships are like and also the show is an 18.

    To me it sits in a neat place. It's not TV teenagers, and it's not movie/'prestige' TV teenagers, and it's closer to but isn't exactly Internet teenagers. It's a fantasy world but isn't in an annoying post-racial way - the American school system with British characters and an ambiguous location for example.
