Full Review Here: www.coolersonsa...
Testing the New Model by Pelican Coolers which is up to 30% lighter than previous models. It felt significantly lighter compared to out ProGear Elite 45Q Cooler. Considering this cooler was so much lighter we were concerned that maybe some of the outstanding ice retention time may have been sacrificed. This was not the case at all, in fact this cooler lasted longer than the ProGear Elite 45.
We have tested the ProGear Elite many times prior with the most popular test being the Five Day Ice Challenge Seen here: • Five Day Ice Challenge...
We also tested the 45 Quart Pelican in April (90+ Degrees daily) and it went 6 Full Days See Test Results Here: www.coolersonsa...
How long would these two go in November with cooler temps? Can Pelican really last 10 days??

I've recently seen a bunch of people crying about a slow leak from where the drain plug is attached to the cooler. can you shed any light on this? have you seen this issue with your coolers?
Actually yes we just noticed this issue when pre-chilling the Pelican before our Best Of The Best Challenge here: ruclips.net/video/Q9zdkfOkPiE/видео.html This is why we pulled the cooler from the challenge.
I've tried to contact Pelican, but have not yet heard back.
Very fair test using cooler of the same size and more importantly, same exterior color.
Thanks Ranger!
Yeah colour matters because black absorbs heat white reflects it so white is the best colour or maybe a reflective foil
I have a pelican 65 at for about 2yrs now and I love it. I have not tested it for 10 days but I once left ice it outside for about two days in this Texas heat 3 days inside with a total of 7 days the ice melted after 7 days but the water and beverages were still cold.
The idea of a cooler is to keep food cold. In this test the coolers are full of ice, not food. With that much ice and no food of course they will last 10+ days. But it defeats the purpose of a cooler if you won't carry any food. I suggest stuffing each cooler with food + ice, then test.
It’s like guys who failed science doing science experiments.🤦🏻♂️ I like when he points the thermometer directly at the ice to measure the temp…as if the surface temp of ice varies from cooler to cooler.😂
As long as the testing method is consistent, it's a good representation of which cooler retains temperature the best.
Great videos. That music toward the end was simply groovin' also lol.
Great review guys ! the therno gun really gives you perspective on the heat of the cooler! the darker the cooler, the hotter they get! +50 degrees
Ambient air temp seems to be a huge factor ... 90F vs 75F cuts the ice life in half. Also, I can always put my cooler in the shade of my vehicle, so being in sun isn't all that normal for most car campers. But the three times a day opening seems fairly normal
Where did all the water go in the pelican 50?
Hello, what do you think of the new otterbox coolers. The people that make phone cases. They claim ice for 2 weeks.
7:06 - 26f??? Should be a solid - Did you salt the ice?
Perfect! I was looking for this exact challenge. Thanks for delivering!
I was at Academy a couple of days ago when I first got to handle the new pelican cooler. I have to tell you, at first look I was very disappointed because I'm such a fan of the first generation. I thought they were just saving money by doing cheaper manufacturing in making it lighter. Although I will definitely miss the handles on the side, I can see the performance is still there. Having said that though, I really do like the robust bill of the first generation. Will these remain available or will they be phased out completely?
Can you guys do a review on the new Otterbox Venture? Since it claims to hold ice for 14 days. Thanks again, you guys do a hell of a job!
The new otterbox venture is the new king on the block. 10 straight days in Florida, and its water tight, something few coolers can claim. Water tightness is big.
Definitely earned the top spot!
How come the ice/water temperatures are so low... Shouldn't they be closer to 32 degrees?
Rod1Malkin 25 degree water confused me too lol.
Water freezes at 32 deg, it doesn't have to stay there. 'Wet" ice will be around 30-32. Harder ice will be lower.
B. Simon he means when the ice was completely melted and the water was 26 degrees...
It's because he was actually measuring the containers surface not the water temp. It looks confusing.
so what do I buy? Should I buy the Pelican Elite? I like the Pelican because of the latches and it is cheaper then a yeti. Please, someone tell me what to get!!!
Also, how do you decide what size cooler to get?
Only you can answer what size you need. We tend to shy on the theory of bigger is better. When we go camping/fishing it is usually a 50Q cooler like this pelican: amzn.to/2qNeFR1 We also use the Engel 50Qt cooler most often (because it fits the best in the back of the truck with the tonneau cover closed). It is more compact than the Pelican. Check the Engel here: amzn.to/2pLtOEK. Engel also has unique latches compared to many other rotomolded coolers. However, at the end of the day, both Pelican and Engel are rock solid.
cupofjoe2988... Just look inside and see if after your beer, other drinks, food is in there.
Like to see one of these new pelican vs a Cabela's polar cap.
It's on our list! Thanks for the suggestion.
On 11 days your temp was in the 20ies.....how can that be? The water would be frozen. Ice can not make any cooler go below 32 degrees.
Piece of junk infrared thermometer. We don't use them anymore.
That's insane! 10 full days of Ice Retention...
Where is all the water in the new Pelican on Day 11? Looking at the water level compared to the Engel, it seems like the water level is significantly lower, which I wouldn't expect given both coolers are 50QT.
Really great question, and we wondered the same. At first I thought maybe the drain plug was leaking, but as you can see from the dock, there was definitely no water leaking from the drain plug. I am going to run another test as the temperatures are heating up again and investigate.
Reviews from others say the Pelican drain plug leaks. I just got the Elite 50 in the mail last week and it's HUGE. I don't know what I was thinking but those handles on the sides are too big. The flange is too big. Just can't think of getting it to fit in my wifes car and it's going to eat up SO MUCH space packing for camping. Wish I'd gone with an Engel or Orca, but I couldn't get them on cheap enough sale.

I'm just about to decide between a pelican 50 and an orca 58 and your comment is making me go the orca way. This was my fear. The pelican looks soo bulky!
@@emmasalgado7877 Hey Emma as outlined by Butch Greene above, we have since testing experienced the drain plug leaking. The Orca 58: amzn.to/2DGb6Xh is still one of our go-to favorites.
63 F Ambient and the "water" at 26.5 F...lol. The only thing that is good for is letting you know the delta in the temperature unless you added clear antifreeze to the water. At 26 F it would be a solid block of ice! Might check the calibration of your IR temp gun and make sure the emissivity settings are correctly set. Quantitatively, emissivity is the ratio of the thermal radiation from a surface to the radiation from an ideal black surface at the same temperature as given by the Stefan-Boltzmann law. In other words, shooting the white cooler then water won't give you absolute temperature readings.
great review are these coolers available in larger sizes yet
How many pounds of ice for each cooler did you use for the test?
They were all different, based on how much ice it took to fill the cooler to capacity. We have those number present in this video: ruclips.net/video/wbFSwQYn-mY/видео.html
I want the new pelican 50 cooler but... Man it's leaking there is no way all the ice melting didn't cause a leak.. From many others it's still a known issue.
We finally found the issue.... The water actually does leak out behind the drain plug. I've tried tightening it up, but the only solution is to seal it with silicone or something similar.
CRABST3R ! Get something else. I have the 30 and it doesn't hold ice for 3 days. Prechilled and unopened. I fill when I leave work on Friday and Monday morning barely any ice left. I have a Coleman xtreme 28 and honestly can't tell the difference. Well about 200 dollars difference. I have 3 yetis and wanted to try a different brand. My mistake.
I just bought a brand new Orca 10 day cooler & can only get 2 days or ice retention inside my climate controlled house in the low 70's F. What's the secret to getting close to 10 days? Do you guys use special ice or what?
How much ice are you using?
Like so many others, I have to question your thermometer....
The magic number between solid and liquid is 32°f for water... And ice, like it's fluffy counterpart snow, can really only be 32°... Unless you use dry ice....
Maybe a little liquid nitrogen would be a good test??? Pretty sure the coolers wouldn't hold up to it for very long though.... But it would definitely be well below freezing inside!!!
As for the test, very good!!! Just can't understand the temperatures.....lol
Ed Gosselin it's probably a 40 dollar ir thermometer from the homeless despot aka home depot. Notice how the laser dot is shining on the bottom of the cooler through the water. Which means it's not being reflected back completely by the water. Meaning the cheap IR sensor in the thermometer is probably confused by what it's looking at, given that water is transparent, reflective, refractive etc. Donate the guy a couple grand and he can buy a nice FLIR camera. Be great for these tests, you'd be able to see in real time all the hot and cold spots. Possible sources of leaks, or areas where the insulation is a little thinner.
just wondering how water could be 25 degrees and not be frozen? Did you guys just disprove the scientific fact that water freezes at 32? Impressive.
Those infrared thermometers are fairly useless. We have since switched over to new thermometers.
Just bought the pelican 20qt. We shall see if it’s any better than my roadie 20
Was it ?
It would be great if you're able to do a comparison with the Ice Hole cooler.
Who fills up an ice chest with ice and only 3 drinks... 10 days if you only need to get something out of your ice chest 3 times a day, with only 3 drinks this ice chest would have only ice after 1 day... I don't buy any ice chest that has cup holders on the lid... Thank you for taking the time for the review...
RedWhite&Blue 78 yup, they should do a real life cooler set-up, drinks and food, filled with 1/2 ice.
JFC! I do welding on top of my cooler and my ice only lasts 2 minutes!! What gives cooler guy?!
RedWhite&Blue 78
no cupholders? what if your fishing and use your hands and your boat is too unstable to put your can of beer down so ya need a holder.
but ya, always seems lamish to me
Vin Ramirez the ratio is 2:1 ice to item ratio. That’s how they test the coolers. Pelican anyway.
And what does a cup holder matter? Looks?
One major flaw in this test is you don't simulate use because moving the ice and beverages around doesn't do anything. First you need to have more beverages, 2nd remove one or more beverages from the cooler as people would do when using it. This is very important because removing a can creates a now open space of air which causes the ice to melt faster.
I own a Pelican and I love it but my ice doesn't last as long even when doing everything suggested and it must be due to removing something from it. I still love my cooler but perhaps you could do a better simulation to give us a more accurate ice retention on these coolers.
Where are these coolers made?
How do these compare to the otterbox 45
Otterbox and Kong hold ice longer assuming similar sized.
I don't see no yeti lasting this long 😂
They’re all about the same.
does the color of the cooler make a difference?
We've tested that several times. You can read about it in this post: www.coolersonsale.com/10-days-ice-retention-is-it-really-possible/
someone was draining the Pelican50Elite
Looks like you've been draining the water out of the coolers and not equally. The Pelican 50 has very little water in all the video shots. Where has the water been going? FWIW, draining water is supposed to make the cooler warm up faster.
Turns out, the drain plug leaks on this cooler, we actually found the same problem with other pelican coolers as well as other have echoed the same.
I just need a cooler for a day. $50 is my max, the rest goes to pay off my house.
Awesome video thanks guys
I just need 3-4 days
G- Gar I’d be happy with that timeframe. I just don’t want to have to get more ice every damn day.
A cheap igloo or Coleman is right for you
can you do a review on the Dometic Avalanche coolers
I think I'm going to leave it unlocked so I'll have a reason to get something else. It's that bad.
Ha ha, something tells me, you're not the only one
10days!Wow!
Kysek and RTIC tests?
Siberian vs this Pelican
Yea ima buy an expensive cooler just to have 3 beers and a shit load of ice.
Omg! holy cow! I wasted my money buying a Ozark trail for 130 dollars. That thing don't hold I've for more than 24hours :(
Great vid Man Smile More God Bless Stay Safe man 👍👍
Surprised you didn't include the Kysek! They slam all of them!
"normal" and you use 3 12oz cans in a cooler? Try it not pre cooling and add more items.
We did that here ruclips.net/video/M7XQA91o4Sw/видео.html (not with more items) but without pre-chilling and keeping amount of ice consistent.
Test some RTIC coolers!!
I like Pelican products buts the coolers are a joke. I'm doubting the authenticity of this video. I have a elite 30 and don't open it for three days. Barely any ice . I leave it in the back of my work truck for the weekend and I cover it with a sun visor.
How much ice are you putting in? Also, what are the temps in the back of your truck. This has a huge factor in retention times.
Coolers On Sale filling it up. I leave stuff in it at work over the weekend. It's in the back of a white truck with a sun visor over it. I don't care if it sits on a blacktop road. It should last longer than 3 days with zero openings.
Coolers On Sale yeti comes with a with a wire basket. Spent a extra 30 for this one. Stupid design you can't access items in the cooler without removing the basket. So almost 260 for a cooler that holds ice for a few days. It didn't last 5 days in the spring like Temps.
That definitely sounds off. I mean you saw the temps that we conducted the test in, it should hold ice for longer. However, this is a 30qt, which is way smaller than the 50 we tested, but without opening, Id still hope you got longer. Have you checked to make sure the drain plug isn't leaking. We found this to be an issue with pelican coolers. It actually leaks out super slow behind/underneath the actual drain plug.
I realize your comment is old but there is probably expedited melting occurring due to your truck exterior heating up and conducting that heat through the cooler causing much more rapid melting.
People with complexes buy Yeti
HOW DOES THE SAME GUYS DO SAME TEST IN 2016 AND NOW IN 2017 ON SAME TWO COOLERS AND GO FROM 6 DAYS TO 10 DAYS I SMELL ALOT OF BS HERE.
Difference of external temperatures..... All explained in the video (at 6:02) , in the description AND in this detailed post here: www.coolersonsale.com/10-days-ice-retention-is-it-really-possible/
