    ▶Quick Notes:
    -All Coolers Pre-Chilled 24 Hours
    -All Ice Came From Same Source On Same Day
    -Coolers Were Rotated Throughout Test To Give Fair Sunlight Exposure
    -Coolers Were Opened 3 Times A Day To Simulate Actual Use
    Ice Capacity Listed In Video
    After the success of our Five Day Ice Challenge, we set to level the field by narrowing the size range of coolers. In this test we match up coolers between 40 and 60 Quart. All coolers were pre-chilled 24 hours, topped back up with ice and 5 bottles of water. All ice was purchased at the same time from the same ice house. We weighed the coolers before and after to give an idea of just how much ice each cooler was holding.

      I really like your videos however I know of some cooks which use yeti coolers to keep the food hot. The idea is the food goes from the pit straight to the cooler. I’m talking about big cuts like shoulder roast or ribs or brisket. I would love to see a video about how well they take heat. Fill them with really hot water for example and see if they can hold the high temp, and how if any they are affected by the high temp.

      Is there a specific one you feel is a best performance for the money? Say one that's close in ice retention performance but significantly cheaper than the others?

  • @jamesbarron1202
    @jamesbarron1202 5 лет назад +8

    The coolers on the left were in the shade in the evening. Also the 2 coolers on each end get more sunlight because they're not shaded by the other coolers. More capacity coolers also have an advantage vs. small coolers

  • @starwfanatic
    @starwfanatic 8 лет назад +14

    I noticed a couples problems.
    1) there was partial shade from trees cast unevenly across the cooler lineup and the coolers cast shade on neighboring coolers
    2) you had mentioned that Yeti set the benchmark for coolers, but only used the Yeti 37 quart, smaller than all the other coolers. The "winning" cooler, the orca, was the largest of the coolers starting with 50 lbs. of ice vs. the Yeti's 33 lbs.of ice.
    i am interested to see the next video with 20 lbs. of ice across all the coolers.
    Thanks for running the tests

    Nice test! It's worth pointing out that the "duration" of ice last appears to correlate to total amount of ice in cooler with a few exceptions. I would love to see the Yeti 75, Orca 75, and Grizzly 75 head to head to make things fair. In your previous videos you demonstrated that one brand didn't matter based on the size but perhaps the others do. I understand the Grizzly 400 to last up to 19 days in actual tests. Also to point out, the 20's performed far worse then these 40-58's and probably did so in cooler weather.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  8 лет назад

      Hey Mstang, good points, we are actually conducting a test now that addresses much of what you've said. We have a 20lb ice challenge running now, and the smaller coolers definitely have the advantage. In fact, that Grizzly 20Q is leading the pack. We will have that video coming out within a week or so.

    i love watching these challenges. my in-laws have a couple of yetis and love them. they can get a good 10-14 days out of them is chilled before a river trip and packed correctly with dry ice and regular ice. i have used them myself when camping with my kids for a couple of days and using them in 114 degree heat during the summer. the orca looks like a good comparable for the yeti and i might have to buy one myself to see if i like it.

    so it looks like lid temperature is not having much of an effect on the ice retention, the video is fast forwarding when the Temps are taken its hard to keep up lol. is that safe to say? looked like the orion had high lid Temps but it seemed to be stable inside.

  • @jeremymann3476

    Good review. Only thing I would have liked to have saw was the exact same size and color coolers from each brand. Not sure how much difference the size makes. But I know it does make some difference. For instance, I have a 75 qt ORCA and a 26 qt ORCA. The 75 filled to capacity with ice will hold the ice about 2-3 days longer.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  7 лет назад +3

      Hey Jeremy, thanks for watching! Yes, that was the goal with this challenge. Not all manufacturers have the exact same size so we tried to get as close as possible. The difference between 40-58Q is rather minor, but you're right going from 20 to 80 quart makes a huge difference when filling coolers to capacity. We will be testing a 40Q Orca in about a week and Ill throw the 58Q in as well to see the difference. Maybe this will help.

    • @guymajor712
      @guymajor712 8 лет назад

      Why? When the Yeti, Igloo, and Orion out performed them? Did you look how much more ice the Orca and Engel started with? That means they lost far faster than the 3 I mentioned. If you used the Yeti 50 it would have gone 7 at its loss rate. Can;t argue science. Unless you just like Orca. Then I guess go for it.

  • @robbinconner5776
    @robbinconner5776 5 лет назад +3

    It seemed that (perhaps unsurprisingly) those with the most ice in general (excluding a few such as the Pelican tailgate etc.) lasted longest. Quantity of ice matters, but the Yeti did quite well for its relatively small amount of ice.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  5 лет назад

      That's not always the case. The manufacturer is the most important factor, then size, then color. We wrote about it and have an updated video of that here: www.coolersonsale.com/ultimate-ice-challenge-results/#1

    • @emilyd7426
      @emilyd7426 3 года назад

      @@CoolersOnSale the rate at which ice melts (given the same exposure) is a constant. If you’re trying to truly compare coolers, they should all be of approximately the same size and have the exact same amount of ice in them. I agree that manufacturer is very important, but saying that size of cooler does not always matter is definitely incorrect.

  • @treystills
    @treystills 8 лет назад +2

    Orca was shown to be in the shade for the video that was shown. I believe what this test demonstrates is that most of them perform relatively the same. Standardization of the external environment, starting with the same weight of ice, measuring the weight of the ice after the test, and not opening the lids would provide elimination of contributing variables. However, I do like how you have introduced a real world variable such as opening the cooler and moving objects through the ice. Great work, thank you!

  • @Poppageno
    @Poppageno 5 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the test! I'd like to see the inside the lid and outside the lid temps and lets say on day 3, drain off the water weigh the cooler w/ice, put back the water. See what percentage of ice has melted. It's no use to see the ice/water temps. It's no wonder the cooler with the larger amount of ice won your test. What was your thoughts on the cooler color question? Thanks again!

  • @mhard126
    @mhard126 8 лет назад +4

    I go back and forth on the usefulness of this metric, but you get some interesting results if you find an average ice lost per day by dividing ice weight by retention. The more ice they lose per day, the worse the performance. In theory this would account for the size differences and the varying amounts of ice. By doing this, the Yeti actually wins at 5.5 pounds a day and the Orca is middle of the pack at 7.14. Taking the inverse and multiplying by 20lbs gives an estimate for the 20lb test-the yeti should win at about 3.6 days. This is an over simplified model(ice melt most likely isn't linear) so the estimates probably aren't accurate, but may prove to be a good indicator of who wins the next test.

    I've never posted a video on RUclips but I'm tempted to post one reviewing the Tree Line Cooler from Tractor Supply. I drive a truck over the road and (try) keep a cooler on the floor of my truck. The floor is usually pretty warm during the summer because of the transmission, exhaust and fuel tanks. The constant sloshing because of the drivin doesn't let an ice bag last too long.

      Definitely keep the water in the cooler. The water and ice will both remain at 32 degrees as long as there is some ice in the cooler. So the water behaves just like the ice as long as there is some ice in the cooler to maintain the overall 32 degrees.

      haha, boycott a cooler company because they are making a more affordable version of a product, and not making a way over priced product that is just sold on the popularity of the brand name.
      Yeti did not invent the cooler...
      The portable ice chest was invented by Richard C. Laramy of Joliet, Illinois. On February 24, 1951. and The Coleman Company popularized the cooler with its initial offering of a galvanized cooler in 1954. Three years later, Coleman developed a process to make a plastic liner for coolers and jugs

    In order to be fair and test only the coolers insulating capability, each cooler in the experiment should be filled with the same quantity (mass) of ice. Based on the data presented here, the Yeti actually outperformed the Orca. Assuming that each started with 28°F ice (estimate based one what I could read on the infrared thermometer) and considering water's & ice's specific heat and heat of fusion, the Yeti, starting with 33 lbs of ice and lasting 6 days, let in ~844 kJ of energy per day, while the Orca, starting with 50 lbs of ice and lasting 7 days, let in ~1,096 kJ of energy per day. In other words, the Orca let in more ice-melting heat energy per day than the Yeti. However, the Orca started with a lot more ice and therefore required more heat energy to melt all that ice. Of course, there are many other considerations... such as the fact that the Orca 58 has more surface area than the Yeti 45, so is expected to let more heat in. In fact, if you divide the "heat let in per day" figure by the total surface area of each cooler, they have nearly identical performance of ~610 kJ/day/m^2! Either way, they are both GREAT coolers.

    dumb comments..."How about the _____ cooler?" Really? Does an extra 4 hours of melted ice really cause you to buy THAT cooler? All of these performed about the same...if you want that extra day of ice, Orca is the best...but think in terms of real time. That song is VERY annoying--

      Not a great showing by Grizzly. I was hoping the white cooler would hold up better than the tan one last time. Grizzly's performance is consistently underwhelming for the $$$ they are charging. I really wanted to get a Grizzly, now definitely reconsidering... thanks for the video!

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  8 лет назад +1

      Seems that way. I definitely expected the color to have a bigger influence. The tan Grizzly lid was consistently 20-30 degrees hotter in the afternoon too. But the Small Grizzly (white 20Q) was the best in our small cooler ice challenge.

    • @GrizzlyCoolers
      @GrizzlyCoolers 8 лет назад +1

      Our testing has consistently shown that white coolers perform better, sometimes the difference is hours other times it can be up to a day.

    • @GrizzlyCoolers
      @GrizzlyCoolers 8 лет назад +2

      Dirty Lawyer, the Grizzly 40 was designed to be a great "all around" cooler not just to win an ice retention test. We strive to achieve the best balance by factoring in performance, pack out, weight, dimensions, and features that all equate to optimal usability. We are always looking to improve all aspects or our coolers including our recent improvement to our drain plug. Our internal testing showed that we had room to improve a vital component and we did it. The new solid core plug combined with internal and external sealing surfaces dramatically reduces condensation and will improve ice retention.

      I'm guessing the 2 inches of insulation for Grizzly vs 3 inches for everyone else is the difference. I'm really torn about them, like everything else about them.

      Of course KONG IS KING no competition here only competition Kong may have is Otterbox or Techni Ice, even Siberian 65QT which is almost identical in internal dimensions with a 50QT KONG would be a good competitor, which CoolersOnSale has NOT TESTED the 65QT Siberian (previous CHAMPION) only 45qt against KONG.

    Great test, but the coolers get different shading making the results questionable. At the start of the video you can see the 2 coolers on the far right are shaded while the others aren't. At the 15:00 mark, the coolers on the left are shaded. Dude, go find an open field without trees to do your tests.
