  • This video shows the progress of the fabulous "Teddy", a Sir Donnerhall filly, who is in for starting under saddle. From the beginning of Week 3, being ridden in the arena for the first time, to the beginning of Week 6, as she prepares to go home, you can see how much these young horses improve under saddle.
My starting program follows this general pattern; you can follow it too with my online horse training program, www.yourhorsemanship.com!
Week 1; Groundwork (lunging, long reining), finishing with first ride in round pen
    Week 2; Farm hacking
Week 3; Riding in arena and hacking round lanes
Week 4; Negotiating obstacles and advanced desensitising
Break in the paddock for 2 weeks (or longer if the horse needs more time to mature)
Week 5&6; Consolidating all ridden work and checking advanced groundwork e.g. loading

i always look forward to watching your vlogs and starting the young ones and seeing how they come along, they all seem so relaxed , do you have any that come through that sometimes take a bit longer or can be a bit of a handful? i would love to know what you do with those when starting.
