I was raised on a farm in eastern North Carolina, USA. Father and both grandfathers were “tabacca” (hahaha) farmers. It’s sad to see the demonization of today’s farms. I’m 51. Started smoking a pipe last year. My father smoked a pipe when he was in the navy, through college, then while on the farm. He told me stories of being in port in England seeing the people drinking and smoking pipes in the pubs. That’s how he got started. I just wanted to share a story with you since you share stories with us on RUclips. I enjoy your channel and your Tolkien vibe. Your room looks very cozy. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours from a loving cousin across the pond.
I can hear pitchforks being assembled! Sky new are on the warpath regarding wood stoves, so careful who you open the door to! 😂 anything to distract from Geoengineering! Just started pipe smoking myself & have spent hours, if not days, watching videos like this, so thanks for another one. 🙏
Harold Wilson used his pipe as a prop while being interviewed. Whenever he was stuck for an answer he used to to fiddle with his pipe to gain time to come up with a suitable answer.
I learnt a lot from Muttonchop Piper when I first started with a pipe - he is legendary 😊 amazing chap - that Kilner jar is spot on for loose tobacco - enjoying Samuel Gawith blends a lot at the moment as a UK piper supporting a small UK manufacturer 😊 yes big news about STG taking over Macbaren and Sutliff.
Richard I believe that if we can afford to, we should each build up a substantial cellar as the control freaks will or may ban tobacco in the not too distant future. I also learned to smoke a pipe from Mutton Chop Piper. I'm very glad to see more and more of us keeping the pipe smoking 'hobby' alive.
Lovely, a bowlful in front of the fire with Mo behind you, my favourite. I'm enjoying my own blend of peach and cavendish. So many layers of aroma 💚💙💜😻
Same here. Many really are works of art too. I keep at least 1 tin of everything I smoke, and hopefully I can figure out something nice to do with them some day. It blows my mind what people in other countries pay for it too. Disgusting really
Flakes are my favorite. Irish Flake, Sterling, G&H Dark Flake (scented or unscented), 1792... Sometimes Bobs Chocolate Flake or Samual Gawith Navy Flake.
Sorry to stick my oar in again ! I use those Kilner type jars , they hold 8oz `s or half a pound of tobacco , well pressed in and do keep it from drying out.
I really hope that you & Julia, will in the near future,be able to grow your own tobacco & it is not just a pipe dream (Had to get that in ☺) seriously though, I wish you every success with it, I will certainly be one of the customers if you start selling it!
I do enjoy your pipe monologues Richard, when I see a new one I fill my bowl and, if later in the day, pour a single or small batch malt, light up and listen,,,then ponder and,,,,,,,relax.
Watching this pipe video is pure tranquility. The only comparison is Richard & Julia sitting outside their van having a cuppa at the side of a road somewhere. Was the pipe calling in the wind?
I have, over the last 6 months, tried quite a few different tobaccos, and the one that I have enjoyed the most and repurchased is St Bruno. It's a easy mellow smoke with a pleasant after taste, nice with a cream coffee. Excellent choice. Thanks for another entertaining video.
There used to be a company in the uk called the Tilty Tobacco Company. They would cure tobacco from growers who had allotment gardens. The growers would harvest and dry their tobacco, label it with their address and send it in to the Tilty Tobacco Company. When they had enough weight of tobacco they would make huge square stacks of it and allow it to cure naturaly. The tobacco would build up heat and ferment out all the chorophill similar to a compost heap. The aromas would begin to develop and the stacks would be turned to allow air flow and an even curing. All done naturaly. I started smoking a pipe 35yrs ago and i tried growing my own tobacco. Sadly that same year The Tilty Tobacoo Company had to close due to a lack of tobacco being sent to them so as to not have enough to create a large enough stack to produce the natural curing effect.
Great video again richard. As mentioned above you should try some uk blends from gawith hoggarth, i recomend ennerdale flake, i think julia would like also and perhaps bobs chocolate flake- beautiful blends. Us south coast pipers should meet up next summer at a suitable hostelry for a chat a smoke and a pint👍.
Richard, it’s great to see you enjoying and publicising the joys of pipe smoking. Mutton Chops is great; watch his videos on “the breath method” if you really want to get the best out of your baccy. I only discovered it this year and wow, what a difference it makes! One can taste all the subtle flavours within the tobacco and believe me, once you get to grips with it, it’s like a revelation. Also, you seem to like traditional, quirky things so, do yourself a favour and try some Gawith Hogarth “Brown No.4 Lakeland Twist”. You’ll need a very sharp knife (I use a cigar cutter) to cut thin coins. Rub them out and smoke in a SMALL pipe until you know your Vitamin N tolerance. Sip slowly and enjoy pure untopped or cased tobacco, but treat with respect or it can floor you. Revor Plug is another great baccy too, originally a Co-Op own label blend. Like with flakes, part of the pleasure of pipe smoking is the ritual tobacco preparation and plugs and twists elevate this to a different level and I seriously think it would be something you’d love so give it a try.
If you have a parker you essentially have a dunhill as parker invented the system and dunhlll owned it when he bought the company and changed the name but save on the high cost of a dunhill. Dont keep your flake in a tin without the greaseproof paper or it dries too quickly
In 1971 they stopped people growing tobacco in the UK. My friends dad was going to get a £100 pound fine if he did not pull the tobacco leaf out the ground. The same friend was growing tobacco leaf in his garden but the slugs got to it first.
Regarding the small opening on jars. If you're storing ready rubbed then why not use a spoon. Just as you would with loose leaf tea for example. Just a suggestion. All the best. 👍
I have a book about the process of producing tobacco for amateurs. The title is "Tobacco Culture - A DIY Guide" written by Guy N. Smith and published by Spur Publications. My first edition is dated 1977. I doubt if many copies were printed but it's well worth investing in a copy if you can find it.
Rub the flake evenly fine put a pipe full in the center of your palm and rotate the pipe gently on top clockwise and it will magically worm itself into the bowl then tamp it so you can draw easily with no air noise and it is a nice even burn because its all connected
Tobacco hasn't been grown in Australia since 2006. You can grow your own but not without the appropriate excise licence(red tape). So it goes to the to hard basket. It also costs $1600 a 1kg to import. So the pinch is on to stop smoking here In Australia and has been for years and its very hard to get any descent tobacco.
Thankyou for sharing Richard..👍 great idea growing your own ..🙂🐕🧙♂️
I remember as a child in the 70's going in to a local tobacconist, the smell was amazing, if i close my eyes i can still smell it.
I think we are really in Lord of the Rings 😊

One of the reasons pipe smokers weigh there words , is the little puffs they take between them , it gives one time to think what one is saying.
I hope Vobes appreciate both my positive and other scrutiny ❤ I did smoke for about 5 years so appreciate the programme 😊

He is the pipe smoking OG.
I watch, while I explore a cigar outside listening to the ocean in 40 degree cool night. Such a great hobby we all share 😊

They’ve quoted 2030 for a complete tobacco ban. There’ll be some demand in 2029!
You summed it up perfectly, Richard. Glimpses of real life are the main reason I watch...

I also agree… we should all start growing more things… there are infinite recipes when it comes to curing, processing, blending and such…
Great video! My first pipe was a Parker. I still have it and it's a great smoker. My first ever tobacco was also St Bruno!
Delightful video and conversation, as sit in my shed, this cold Sunday morning, enjoying a pipe. In it, Day Break. Wonderful. Thank you sir.
Fortunately where I live in the U.S.We don't have those hideous labels.

I've recently started smoking a pipe, I'm in the learning it and getting to slowly enjoy it 😊

I'm enjoying a lot your videos.
We need more small blenders!
Thank you for the video
It's the anti-smoking lobby in Westminster that keep tobacco prices so high, this has killed so much of British tobacco, basically.
Sorry to stick my oar in again ! I use those Kilner type jars , they hold 8oz `s or half a pound of tobacco , well pressed in and do keep it from drying out.

You can get predrilled briar blocks from mysmoking shop. And stems that you can shape as well. Would be cool to see you make your own 👍🏼

I procured a wonderful book called "Home Tobacco-Craft" by the members of that co-op - years of their wisdom condensed into a slim volume.
You can get a starter pipe where the holes are drilled and it comes with the stem fitted you're job is to shape it how you like

Smoking St.Bruno right now in a corn cob.

Current favourite flake is Solani Aged Burley. A lovely relaxing smoke. Partial to Erinmore flake as an every day, anytime smoke.
Great video, Sir! Thanks you!
Hello thanks for the video, very nice pipe 🔥☁️☁️👋🇦🇹

I probably have 10K seeds. Here in the US I grow a couple plants every year and let them flower for the hummingbirds.
All the more reason to grow it. I loath any clearly corrupt Gmnt laws and go out of my way to flout them. They're civil SERVANTS, not our masters.
my grand dad smoked a pipe and used to put a piece of apple in with his tobacco to keep it from drying out.
Orange peele works too
@@call_in_sick
the orange peele would probably be better than the apple as the baccy wouldn't stick to it.
a thin slice of raw potato will also keep tobacco in a pouch from drying out

Great videos!!! Greetings from Croatia!
This could easily replace the Kings Speech 😅and Christmas 🎄 message
They are having Halifax minster Christmas morning near us on TV 😅
St Bruno was Alf Garnett's favourite tobacco.

I’m nice and chilled out now .
I used to have tobacco plants I have all the photos I also grew rustica and I had quite a fair few outside 😊🌱🌼
Must be the best kitchen on TV. Shame about mainstream studios 😢😢😢😢😢😢
👍👍👍
Maybe a budding cottage industry like the CAMRA push and other old traditions.
You should try some rich dark flake.
What’s tobacco worth in the UK, 77$ in BC 🇨🇦
Did your cat fail art school?... I'll show myself out.
