I have been using the matebook for a week now after buying the r5 4600h 8gb ram version with the 1440p non touch display. A few of my observations: 1) The display is absolutely gorgeous, and although games don't really support a 3:2 aspect ratio I don't really use the letterbox settings; I set the games to "fill" the screen cause I'm a casual gamer and don't really care about the slight cropping. 2) Build quality is good 3) Keyboard is really nice, trackpad is decent 4) Webcam is pretty awful, terrible angle and quality. 5) Port selection is good, and 65W USB charging is fast as well 6) The laptop runs pretty hot and loud when playing minecraft with unlocked framerate, but locking the framerate to 60 (on fancy settings) keeps the noise and heat down a bit. Playing with render distance 21 is perfectly fine, which surprised me cause it only has 8gb ram (albeit in dual channel). Overall a smooth experience, and the display doesn't feel too much slower than my 144hz monitor. 7) Switching the laptop to performance mode from balanced mode causes some vibrations as the fan spins up inaudibly 8) Cinebench R20 performed really well, I saw thermal throttling almost instantly as all 6 cores hit 4.0 ghz at 99C but frequencies stabilised at around 3.4-3.5 GHZ all core at full fan speed. Temps were still high though at 99C. It scored a healthy score of 2900, which if memory serves beats my desktop r5 1600 by 500 points Single core score was 440, again beating the desktop r5 1600 by 40 pnts or so. 9) The fingerprint sensor works well, but is on the small size so you have to align your finger just right to get a good read. 10) The 265gb ssd is partitioned into two drives, C: and D: for whatever reason. This was a bit of an annoyance because, assuming there was just one C: Drive, I copied my data over to this laptop, only to learn that the C: drive was completely filled by it. I was confused at first but saw that there was a D: drive so I copied my data over to that one to keep the C: drive empty.
Hey, W2B, I finally chose my next laptop and I think it might be a model you would be interested in. It's the maxed-out 2021 refresh of the Lenovo Ideapad 5i. It packs the newest i7-1165G7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and an Nvidia MX450 GDDR6 into a 14" device. It seems a great choice to me, so I would love to hear your opinion (maybe even a review? jk jk.... unless). The exact model is Ideapad 5 14ITL05!
@@w2best Sounds almost too good doesn't it? But I'm certain it's an actual model. Though it's availability is on the lower side you can definitely find it. I'm waiting for it to be released in netherlands, but I know for sure you can get it in Germany and Belgium (Switzerland too I think).
@@w2best Hey, so I checked and the only difference between the model I suggested and the PRO model is the refresh rate (90Hz for PRO), brightness (400 for PRO vs 300), and the storage (1TB for PRO, and 512GB for maxed-out 2021 Ideapad 5). The aspect ratio is probably different too, since new models have 16:10 instead of 16:9. Other than that, all spec are the same. Is the Matebook 14 able to edit and export "very light" 4k footage? - Just 20 minutes of 4k nature films --> color grading and exporting, no effects or what so ever added ...
Great video buddy. I have one question, for watching content, Netflix, RUclips, etc, does the 3:2 ratio become annoying? Like, do you get a lot of black bar at the top and bottom of the Matebook?
TBH I think it's a bit disturbing. Mainly because it's black borders + there is a bit of backlight bleed. So you notice the backlight bleed more when you watch movies. If you do a lot of that I would recommend 16:10 that is a solid in between. You get as big video but a bit more space for productivity. :)
@@adalat7019 it's good, it lasts about 7 hours if you just watch movies, RUclips and surfing the web, social media etc. In case you're using Photoshop or you're doing some editing or stuff like that it will last about 4 hours

I REALLY agree with you. I just have to decide if I can allow the budget to buy another laptop for reviewing now right after I got the Yoga Slim 7 pro. But comparing the matebook to the macbook air, the yoga slim 7 pro to the macbook air would be amazing content to produce! :)

I would love to own an M1. I'm not sure if I can afford it but it would be super fun to have one to do comparison with both yoga slim 7 pro and matebook 14! I'm sure you will be pretty happy regardless, but 13 and 14 are different. And Windows and Mac of course. I just got more into using Windows the last 3 years. :)
@@w2best I currently have the 2015 Macbook air and I love it. However I find that when I need to do real work it is much easier on a windows machine. But for most of the time and for casual browsing, replying emails watching videos the ease of use of the macbook is great. Not to mention the 16:10 aspect ratio whichnibfinf to be the best for both work and video watching. Keep up the good work.

@@w2best it's nice and compact, nice to have it when on the sofa to finish some work. its screen is waaay brighter than my lenovo legion's. at 100% scale you have to be a putty sniper. keyboard leds are good in the evening. not too happy about 3D performance though, but hey, I got some other hardware for gaming. and my wife loves it!

The battery part wasn't added by mistake. It's a decent battery but the yoga slim 7 with amd is WAY better in battery life. If it's important for you you should def. go that one.
I had shot an addition about battery life but missed to add it. Much better in the yoga but still good in the Matebook. 8h or 12h which both are pretty fine for me! :)

My choice is clearly the Slim 7, because that's the one I bought last year... heheh... The Matebook is also an excellent choice, though... so the real winners here are the consumers, who got two vendors trying to outdo one another resulting in laptops with excellent specs and performance at a (relatively) affordable price. I had yoga slim 7 4700u, 16 gb ram and it had terrible ghosting display and thermal issues. It was super loud under load. I switched it for cheaper thinkpad e14 4500u and i am happy. Its best laptop in its class for me. E14 has even better screen than my elitebook 445 g7.

Hi , can you help me ? I'm contemplating buying the philips 272E1GAEZ monitor.. now it also has a 24 inch variant.. on a best-monitor list site the 24 incher took 35th place and the 27incher took 40th place.. probably due to the higher price too. But the ppi is 83 on the 27incher while 92 on the 24incher. Will the picture quality be worse on the 27incher? I mean it's the same monitor..just larger. Either way on the best-monitor list the 24 incher got the grade b- for picture quality while the 27 incher got the grad c.. I don't get why. Its the exact same monitor just bigger. I guess 27 inch should mean better resolution (1440p) but it's clearly stated that the resolution on both variants is 1080p.
This is a question that is beyond my knowledge! I would go for a 27 inch in general except for gaming BUT not with FHD. I don't think FHD is enough except if gaming is your only reason for buying it.
@@w2best yeah gaming would be the only thing I would do on it. I have an 4k hdr TV on which I play visually stunning single player games. But I cant play fps with it. I have a benq rl2455 but I don't really like the tn panel. I have settled for the aoc 24g2 now since it really seems to be the best for its money. And it has an input lag of 3-4ms .. which is pretty crazy considering the benq rl2455 which was explicitly made for competitive gaming on the ps4 has an input lag of 10 ms.
If i got to re choose i would get the 4800h touch version. I wasn't aware the 4600h doesn't have it and there are times when I have wished i had it. But you can't know how long the wait will be so it's hard to say what's right...

Ah I would love to be able to just pick one of these but I want a dedicated GPU. Not a very powerful one but a MX450 at least... So I'm waiting for either the Yoga Slim 7 Pro, Ideapad 5 Pro or the Gen 2 Thinkbooks... I hope you can review any of these when they come out. It seems like people don't really care for the MX450 laptops but I have a weird preference hahah

I think that's an almost impossible choice to make. They are pretty much exactly equal in my eyes and it comes down to what os and port setup you need.

That is a really hard question because amd 5000 series is being release but god knows when there will be actual availability there. If you need a laptop within 1-2 months I think you can buy now. If you're not that stressed I would hold off for the amd 5000 u and h series. :)

@@w2best between february and march there were campains at Huawei in Europa. Here in Germany the 4600h/16/512 where at 810€ + really cheap gifts(6800h@1000€). In Spain the same at 750€ + port extender and I wont mine with ñ. Obiously at this prices all disapears really fast.

How about battery life? I remember when I had Matebook 14 that it was much worse than Zenbook which I currently use. And MB14 had no 4k60 via HDMI.

It is only the slim 7i that has the speaker grills on the front, the slim 7 has them on the bottom like the matebook 14

The screen isn't bad at all on the Yoga Slim 7 but compared to the Matebook 14, there's a clear winner QHD beats FHD.
It's a great screen! It's just hard to beat 3:2 qhd...

My choice is clearly the Slim 7, because that's the one I bought last year... heheh... The Matebook is also an excellent choice, though... so the real winners here are the consumers, who got two vendors trying to outdo one another resulting in laptops with excellent specs and performance at a (relatively) affordable price. I had yoga slim 7 4700u, 16 gb ram and it had terrible ghosting display and thermal issues. It was super loud under load. I switched it for cheaper thinkpad e14 4500u and i am happy. Its best laptop in its class for me. E14 has even better screen than my elitebook 445 g7.
E14 seems great for the price! A machine i would love to take a closer look at!

I'm contemplating buying the philips 272E1GAEZ monitor.. now it also has a 24 inch variant.. on a best-monitor list site the 24 incher took 35th place and the 27incher took 40th place.. probably due to the higher price too. But the ppi is 83 on the 27incher while 92 on the 24incher. Will the picture quality be worse on the 27incher? I mean it's the same monitor..just larger. Either way on the best-monitor list the 24 incher got the grade b- for picture quality while the 27 incher got the grad c.. I don't get why. Its the exact same monitor just bigger. I guess 27 inch should mean better resolution (1440p) but it's clearly stated that the resolution on both variants is 1080p.
This is a question that is beyond my knowledge! I would go for a 27 inch in general except for gaming BUT not with FHD. I don't think FHD is enough except if gaming is your only reason for buying it.
@@w2best yeah gaming would be the only thing I would do on it. I have an 4k hdr TV on which I play visually stunning single player games. But I cant play fps with it. I have a benq rl2455 but I don't really like the tn panel. I have settled for the aoc 24g2 now since it really seems to be the best for its money. And it has an input lag of 3-4ms .. which is pretty crazy considering the benq rl2455 which was explicitly made for competitive gaming on the ps4 has an input lag of 10 ms.

If i got to re choose i would get the 4800h touch version. I wasn't aware the 4600h doesn't have it and there are times when I have wished i had it. But you can't know how long the wait will be so it's hard to say what's right...

Ah I would love to be able to just pick one of these but I want a dedicated GPU. Not a very powerful one but a MX450 at least... So I'm waiting for either the Yoga Slim 7 Pro, Ideapad 5 Pro or the Gen 2 Thinkbooks... I hope you can review any of these when they come out. It seems like people don't really care for the MX450 laptops but I have a weird preference hahah

I think that's an almost impossible choice to make. They are pretty much exactly equal in my eyes and it comes down to what os and port setup you need.

That is a really hard question because amd 5000 series is being release but god knows when there will be actual availability there. If you need a laptop within 1-2 months I think you can buy now. If you're not that stressed I would hold off for the amd 5000 u and h series. :)

@@w2best between february and march there were campains at Huawei in Europa. Here in Germany the 4600h/16/512 where at 810€ + really cheap gifts(6800h@1000€). In Spain the same at 750€ + port extender and I wont mine with ñ. Obiously at this prices all disapears really fast.
