- In 2018, friends Guylee Simmonds and David Schnabel bought a 100-person survival lifeboat and spent just over a year transforming the utilitarian vessel with a mission to take it on an epic 5,000km, four-month cruise from the Sussex coast to the Arctic Circle. This is their story...

Couple of questions
1) how much fuel do you carry?
2) what is the top speed?
3) do you have a water maker on board?
4) what kind of range do you have?
#2 is 6kts.
1. Specs on those types of boats have about a 47 gallon capacity giving them about a 180 mile or so range with the stock diesel engines.
2. 6 kts
3. The ocean is made of water, you don't need to make it. A desalinatior on the other hand...
4. See number 1.
That's probably a yanmar 40hp and it consumpts about 6l per hour

Get a life you muppet.
Yes, the editing and voiceover does need a bit of work.
For those who like tales of adventure, Erskine Childers's 1903 The Riddle of the Sands features a sailboat made from a lifeboat of that era. It is a great sailing tale.

Michael W. Perry one of my FAVS! Not only was it a great sailing/spy adventure but you learned so much about the geography of the Netherlands! So much so that I’ve read it several times. Being a pan avid nautical history/fiction fan, I was absolutely enthralled. Even printed out maps of area to familiarize myself w the East and West Frisian Islands. Followed the real life, fascinating story of the author Childers as well. Did u know Churchill enacted new Defense Laws due to this book?! Defense against an invasion from the North Sea. Incredible history. 👍 BTW the 1979 film w Michael York was just OK but whenever it’s on TCM I make sure to catch it! 😁
I never even considered a lifeboat as an option. Never even knew they were available for purchase. Very ingenious.
Neither did I until I was doing some work on a friend's canal boat and I kept seeing these big plastic orange things throughout the London canal system. Its a fantastic idea and they have a charm all of their own, I REALLY want one, lol.
A guy on georges small spaces butchered one, its not as easy as it looks 12inches of boyancy foam on the inside, to just name one problem
I looked at them a few years ago to convert like this. Boats that I found were surprisingly expensive

Hello my friend, can you help me get a job in Deutschland please? :)
I just discovered your channel. OMG I'm in love with this entire concept. It wasn't until a few years ago that I saw the inside of one of those lifeboats and wondered how they were configured for their original use. Just for a second, I imagined one redesigned for the use you have converted it to. Just amazing. So it's all-electric and completely self-sustained. How wonderful is that?
What an ingenious way to enjoy life traveling with your partner, and puppy makes three.
Would love to hear more about your adventures and your personal history.
Both students.
What's not to love about all of this.
We are huge fans already. I'm really looking forward to reviewing your channel's history.
What an incredible journey and well done at the conversion, it’s absolutely stunning. Definitely want to see more!
Wow,wow and wow!!! this is absolutely amazing!!! What an experience that you will carry with you forever! You guys had the adventure that most of us dream of and unfortunately so few of us will ever live. Most important you were able to think outside of the box and achieve your dream. Never stop dreaming !
Absolutely brilliant and quite a departure from the traditional sailboat "fixer-upper" routine.
Excellent vessel for such purposes, if the doors are shut it’s can ride out pretty much any storm and they’re self righting!
I think your choice of converting a lifeboat for this adventure is brilliant! I am looking forward to more information on your adventures!
I lived for thirty years in buses, and house trucks. My house truck is stored in america with 800 watts of solar, on the roof, while i sit out the virus on the island of Leyte in the Philippines.

Interesting re-purpose of a lifeboat. If this is the case there's bound to be a number of them available for conversion for a variety of uses. However exploration like this is a wonderful use for it.
Wow! of all the boat people chanels this is definetly a winner. Keen to see what you guy get up to.
What an awesome build. I do kinda wish you guys would show more of the build but that's ok. your dog however is such a peaceful pet.

Well done guys and thank you for showing me something of what can be done with an old lifeboat as I had wondered.
Having money opens many doors to many adventures... only for a few.
austin1839 yep, they say self sufficient, if you have the money to travel without working. And if you see videos about adventurers, vast majority are white.
i've seen what lifeboats like this cost, if you're fortunate enough to live in a country where people name their kids Austin, you can afford it with a bit of work/saving
I bought an old fucked prototype from 1974 very cheaply, mostly because I couldnt afford rent, fixed it up and lived on it for four years, the last year with my baby. It was a way to save money and live an adventure, and I certainly miss the lifestyle.
The community we lived with were all thinking outside the box, none of us had money:}
of course i do want one like that also. i could be more capable and can do better. but without money, what can i do? lucky for them, they are rich. after their adventure, they can simply scrap it.
@@alfonsosoriano171 Ok maybe, but for example in a financial crash the first thing people get rid of is their boat. In 2009 you could quite literally pick one up for free. And the conversion can happen in tiny increments. It costs less than rent if it happens while you live on it, a bit every day. And the product you have in the end is worth a lot more, so your expenses are covered.
I would say though that the change in lifestyle that is required to achieve this might be more intimidating than anything else, but it suited me perfectly.
There is a whole boat gypsy community out there, very free people for the most part who do not live by societal norms, and usually only see money as a means to an end.
Fantastic use of a rock solid canvas. Fair winds to these lads.
What an amazing journey... and one of the best stories I’ve ever watched on RUclips.. can’t wait to watch more journey vlogs

Very well done!! Congratulations, and you will remember this trip you whole life.
Good on you both, follow your passions and dreams. I love your boat (and dog)!!
Nice vid and very interesting conversion.. The lifeboat to go for though if ever one came up for sale is an RNLI Severn class which will handle ANY stormy weather! A fully fitted Severn class in service costs around £2.5 million so i expect an ex-RNLI one stripped would still be pretty expensive! Lovely dog...he's gorgeous!
Some dogs are luckier than others 😂 what a great life
cozy warm inside, fully protected, ideal for arctic summers!
We met in Tromso last summer in Skattora. We were on Arktika, the aluminum motorsailer on the hard currently. Hope to get back soon. Love to see Norway again from your eyes.

The greatest thing about it is that you don't need to buy a lifeboat. You are already in one!
I would had love an around tour of the boat in full detail, It a good project.
What an original and clever idea. Awesome editing for the video.
Amazing work. Great idea. The places this thing can go that other boats can't.. albeit much slower, but that's the point isn't it? Great stuff. Right up my alley.
After doing a few cruises I have always thought that they would be ideal for something like this
Lifeboats are crazy durable and near impossible to sink!
Amazing. It's like a floating shipping container.
Awesome idea. Never thought them as a boat to go exploring. Now I want one.
I think it is the only boat that doesn't require to have a liferaft onboard...
Putera Usman would still want one. You always pack a spare parachute when skydiving.
They do, though.
Been on the ferry it came off, MV CLANSMAN, many times. They swapped the lifeboats for an inflatable marine evac system.
This maybe one of only a few people to have escaped the covid 19 lockdown.

absolutely beautiful boat and design, thank you for sharing,
Very good..exelent designed, now that's a boat I'd sail any day..

Although I’m a sailing man I see this boat and it shouts ‘northwest passage’ at me. What a great boat and wonderful conversion. I hope the engine doesn’t vibrate too much and keep the off-watch man awake.
Respect to you both - fantastic project and experience!
Awesome, ingenious, epic idea! I am a sailor myself, netherless I love that your lifeboat as an adventurer! Keep going!
Do you have some way of stormproofing those enormous perspex windows where the passenger access hatches used to be?
Not to be a party pooper but the seas up in the Arctic and the Barents can be immense.
But now that the doom and gloom stuff is out of the way can I just say what an utterly fantastic job you've made of this conversion.
I'd still be a bit hesitant to sail her on the open ocean but for the purpose you've put her to I can't see it being beaten.
ANTON RUDENHAM
You are quite right. Unless they have addressed the stability issue with a professional naval architect, then the Windows (providing they were designed to withstand the sea and constructed of approved materials) would provide amazing underwater viewing once they're knocked over by waves....
They roll like a pig
If they used polycarbonate it shouldn't be a problem it's more how it's fixed in, but that looks ok.
Thanks for the comment - the windows are 12mm Perspex sandwiched between two layers of aluminium then bolted to the hull. Incredibly strong. We visited the original manufacturer on our way through Norway and they seemed confident it could still roll safely!
It's like a big fat narrowboat! What fun... I'm jealous ;-)
Dig it, great use of speed rail and finally someone that gets the walk on top panels, Solara makes a great product !!
A 110 watt panel is over $1300, I can buy a 350 watt residential panel for $200. Those are crazy expensive.
@@chapter4travels You can see some of the Sunflare solar panels at one of our distributors here: www.ok4wd.com
You lads stole my dream - Looks amazing - thanks for posting
What beautiful water to be exploring by a beautiful boat.
If you can do it why not! awesome stuff...
A 33 foot boat will need 10-15 hp to go 6 knots. 1 hp = 750 watts with no losses. That means you need at least 8000 watts electric to navigate. Your panels produce 1200? watts under direct sunlight. You must have a very large battery system. You do or do not also use an internal combustion engine?
They must be using the original engine....numbers given just don't add up.....plus there was no reference given to converting it to electric drive, which is really odd if they did convert it
He mentioned that the solar charges the starter battery so there is an engine in there somewhere.
Of course they are using the diesel engine that it came with, they never said or eluded to anything else.
According to the specs for the type it includes a 27 hp engine, gearbox, and a shrouded 18" brass propeller with 195 Liters of fuel.
That's presuming I have correctly Identified it as a Viking Norsafe JYN-100 MKI Davit Launching Lifeboat.
Awesome, brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing and showing images of the fjords and the seven sisters. I drive a camper, but this is so much better.
Greetzzzz from Holland

Beautiful couple living the dream life!
Cost for the solar panels and the cost of the life raft
Wow that is the nicest live aboard I’ve ever seen. Definitely living the dream.
Self suficient? How about diesel for that engine? Food? Water? Being able to charge a laptop is not being self suficient...
so what do you want from them? I hope you compost!
Well if you want to be relatively self suficient at sea a mast and sails is probably a good start.
G. Vanputte you know more than me so I agree with you I guess
Chill out mate lol
You've inspired me, I am going to build a boat that harvests everything I need from the ocean. I figure it would be setup to harpoon whales maybe seals if you are in a pinch and then process them for oil for fuel and meat to live on.
I might even use a thermoelectric generator just so I can burn whales for electricity.
Interesting idea of re-using a lifeboat into a regular motor boat/pleasure craft.
By putting in the windows like they did really seals up the boat against really extreme weather.
All electric motors is an interesting choice. It s quite uses no fuel and can go anywhere to be parked anywhere.
Yes I would have like to see more of the boat and the inner workings of the mechanical's
There are probably hundreds of these types of boats out there that can be re-used like this.
Great effort these two did for this build.

Great video. I want a life boat now. Stay safe and keep sailing. Maybe see you back in Cardiff.
How does it hold up in rough weather? What about water for toilets, showers and kitchen sink? What is you tank capacity and what do you do with sewage?

Sounds so fun I wish I was able to do something like that
A bit miss leading title, thought it was powered by electrical motor. Don't find out until right at the end of video that is has a diesel, so the alternator does most of the charging.
You could have guess that tbh by the fact that no boat in existence has enough deck area, even fully covered, to power it for any significant length of time with solar panels.
Honestly, titles like this make me angry. It's patronising.
That diesel engine is rated at dozens of kilowatts, you don't need to be a mathematician to realise that you can't even fit a fraction of that on the deck in solar panels, and even if you could, you would only be getting full power at midday.
@
Quinn Thorburn, not misleading at all. They get all their electrical power from solar panels, allowing them to power lights, laptops, kettles etc.
@@Visionery1 Don't believe that at all. There's simply not enough panels. It would only take ONE overcast day, and the battery bank would be depleted. Add another overcast day or two, I'd say the alternator on the engine would then be working over time. L.O.L.
@@Visionery1 And the flexible solar panels they used are much less effective than ridged ones.
