The multi player aspect was a super cool experience and addition in Ascension as well, which was very unique since it's only on this game specifically. Not to mention, the way the main storyline unfolded begged the player to tackle it once more with that newfound understanding of how the timeline and events were unfolding. That coupled with the fact that it wasn't this super long dragged out adventure meant that achieving platinum status for this game was inadvertently a lot more incentivized due to how easy and obtainable it actually was. Don't get me wrong, it was still a challenge, but it didn't feel too time consuming and tedious. All that meant that you could hop right back in to multi player with your friends in a day or two, or hell, keep on the solo grind with your *Personally Customized Character!*

It's crazy to me that people shit on this prequel game when it's clear that it had to have it's limitations and drawbacks due to it needing to take place earlier in the storyline. Coming in as an installment in the franchise right after the powerhouse of a god slayer that Kratos was in the previous game, right off the rip, you should understand you're not gonna feel as powerful and there's a lot of slack you gotta cut this prequel game you're about to play😂 Knowing that, when it was all said and done, I felt like got wayyyyy more than I had expected.

2:18 "While the core concept of the story had potential, the execution simply didn't live up to it's promise!" - That's it right there! Exactly my thoughts. Long before Ascencion was announced I actually always wondered, how Kratos just walked away from the god he literally made a pact with as you don't just go "screw you, I'm going home" on the devil after making a deal with him. I was actually really looking forward on this more from a story perspective than from a gameplay perspective. And it just disappointed completely.

There were many reasons why Ascension failed. Even if the story had been written and executed in the best possible way, it wouldn't have made much difference. Kratos' journey was over. In fact, Ascension should have come before God of War 3, not after!

@@RustyGamerrr You're absolutely right on the timing playing a big role that cannot be denied. But even in this situation I think that the game could have done better than it actually did and the execution of the story plays an integral part I think.
Personally however, after Ghost of Sparta I would have preferred a spin-off with Deimos. The concept of him has been with us ever the first GoW (even though that concept went through some changes unfortunately) and we even left him burried with the Arms of Sparta on his grave (best secondary weapons in the entire Greek games IMO) which could have opened the way for him to be revived. I mean Kratos dies in every mainline GoW game yet other guys besides the Barbarian king never come back, feels kinda like plot armor.
Basically what I'm aiming at here is that it could have been a smaller, lower budged, experimental spin-off. A little bit of different mechanics with the new weapons to freshen up the gameplay and a new character as Kratos' story was rounded up. I know that Deimos doesn't come with the brand recognition of Kratos but but spin-offs with new characters have shown to work in the past.
Anyways, I'm just spitballing here. No need to take my ramblings to serious. Just something that I always think about when this topic comes up.

@@Ivotas Your ideas are not meaningless at all. The older games in this series really do need more love these days, now that the Norse games have the spotlight. I wish at least one of the PSP games had followed Deimos' story! What great opportunities were missed!

@@RustyGamerrr Thanks for the feedback mate. Yeah, I really feel like the original GoW games deserve more love. And I say this as someone who enjoys the new direction. Sometimes it feels as if people think only the 2018 game put the series on the map, while this has been one of the big names in the Sony catalog long before. Totally unjustified.
As far as Deimos is concerned, I feel that was the perfect opportunity to create a GOW game for the Vita. Have a spin-off with a new character in which you can introduce a couple of new mechanics that take advantage of the devices unique features. Again, I'm not saying that it woud have been a guaranteed hit. Bit with how little support the handheld received this would have been the ideal opportunity to try out a more experimental approach. If the game would have failed at least you already have excuses at the ready with 'it's the new protagonist', 'it's the new gameplay mechanics' or 'it's the new Vita features'. Well, at least I can play GoW3 with the Deimos skin.^^

@@Ivotas If a studio other than Santa Monica were to make a God of War game with Deimos as the protagonist, Ready at Dawn would be the natural choice, given their experience developing two God of War games for the PSP. However, after the conclusion of God of War 3, the hype for the series had largely died down. It would have been difficult to guarantee sales for a game centered on Deimos. And considering the events of Ghost of Sparta, it would have been impossible to make a game focused on Deimos after 2010.
If there is to be a remake of the old God of War games, perhaps Santa Monica should also consider Deimos.

29:10 - THE REASON why newer games feel boring
In Ascension we have the fire closing in on us creating REAL tension and fear of death
In GOW 2018 we have a lifeless TIMER, creating a feeling of "well if time runs out I lose because time ?" meh
Old games were just more innovative
