I'm a woman too... and this tutorial has given me the confidence to try this repair MYSELF! I'm tired of waiting for someone to do it for me. And a plumber has already diagnosed the problem --- need to change the flapper. I just didn't know what a flapper was. Thanks to Google and RUclips... and the creator of this videoclip!
I'm a woman who knows nothing about plumbing. Your instructions to fix my leaky toilet and clean the FLAPPER WORKED! Thank you so much, saved $70.00 from needing to call a plumber.
Very good tutorial. I am a woman who has to put this tutorial to use because my husband never gets around to it. It's been 2 months already. Kudos to husband's who actually get things fixed around their house(;
Thanks so much. You explained and showed everything extremely well in your video. I moved nine years after my husband died from my home in the country, which was too big for me into a sweet little Mini Home that I bought from a single lady and her six year old daughter. Lately, I have to hold the toilet handle down until everything empties out of the toilet, or flush it twice. Your video was the best...I did not know how to empty a toilet tank and fill it back up as well as clean the toilet flapper valve which I think is the problem.. The more I learn on my own the better I feel about myself and I want to have the knowledge about so many things I never had to worry about before but now do. It cost a lot for a plumber and repairmen and I do not want myself paying plumbers, and different repairmen if it is not necessary. Thanks again. lol
Very informative and easy to understand. This will save me a call to the plumber and quiet an incessantly hissing toilet. Yahoo and bless you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank You sooooo much for this video. I was going nuts with the constant leaking sound having no idea how a toilet operates. My toilet is really old with a red rubber conical stopper...still I followed your cleaning advice and omg it worked!! I am just so grateful because I could not afford to call a plumber.
I changed the flapper last night. Still slow leak, refilling every 10 minutes or so. This morning I watched the video. I immediately went and used the scotch pad on surface around opening below flap. And the leak has stopped! Amazing! Thanks for posting.
This is exactly what was happening with my toilet. I followed your steps and now my toilet is working 100% perfectly. With a little bit of scrubbing with polishing pads on the flapper valve the toilet no longer "mysteriously" turns on and off. Great tip about putting the lid flat on a surface as well. Thank you for this video. Cheers!
Really helped me. My husband was ready to call a plumber. Even though cleaning it didn't fix the problem, at least I understood what was going on, and was able to go to Lowe's and get a $3 replacemment flapper valve, which totally stopped the leak when installed. That's a lot cheaper than a plumber would have been. Really good video. Thanks.
thank you so much! my toilet had been loud and hissing with the water constantly running for months. i am so glad i found your video. it was so straightforward and easy and best of all i saved myself a call to an expensive plumber!
My Kohler 84252 installed in 2008 is great; but for at least the past 6 months I'd get a whooshing sound of water about every 45 to 60 seconds! Great fun at night. Everything seemed ok inside. Even though I have well water, what a waste. I did a gentle scrub w/a Chore Boy underneath and below the flapper. Voila, total silence for the past hour! A detailed fix-it video -- the advice re: gentle care of the toilet bowl cover is so true -- thanks!
Well this helped me so much! Turns out that the rubber seal had gotten off center, and the flapper could not sit on top of that rubber ring properly. Mine did not come out like yours did, but I was still able to turn off water, empty tank, disassemble the ball float, and the handle...uh-stem? Whatever. That gave me access to the bottom of that flapper thingy, so I could tinker with it. I am very proud of myself! :) For anyone who can't make a part screw back onto it's original piece, check to see if you are screwing in the correct direction. Ask me how I know that. ;)) Thank you so much!
This works, also you can use a wash cloth and white vinegar to clean the surfaces. It will also work on a leaking washer-less faucet by clean the seating surfaces. Most times there is no need to replace toilet flapper or any new parts on a washer- less faucet. Just clean it!
I've fix toliets in the past by simply replaceing the flapper. However this time even with a new flapper it was slightly leaking at the flapper seal. Saw this video and used the scotchbrite suggestion to the seal (toilet side) and damn to my surprise it worked! I could not see an debri on the seal so I was not expecting any change. Thanks for the video!
An excellent very clear demonstration. Our water produces considerable brown sediment over time and my flapper valve is starting to leak. I will try your remedy for sure. We cleaned the tank but this obviously will not cure the leaking since it is probably at he flapper valve.
I can see how cleaning the flapper could stop a leak. I didn't use "food coloring" because I already knew it was leaking. I tried cleaning the flapper, and I was surprised that the leaking was a lot less. But I still could hear a drip. I replaced the flapper with a Korky Flapper and the drip is gone. Thanks for this video.
My Kohler toilet was leaking by the flapper (same innards as in the video) so I replaced the flapper and it got worse. It was refilling at least every 5 minutes. After I saw the video I used the scotchbrite I had in the closet around the new flapper and down where the flapper rests against. It appears to be fixed now. Thanks for the great video and advice.
thank you very much, this was so helpful and clear! God bless you guys for making clear and helpful videos that absolutely anyone can follow and use. i was almost in tears, thinking we were going to have to call a plumber. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for the video! I have the exact same toilet as the one used for your demonstration. I replaced the flapper a month ago but the leak continued. Fortunately I held on to the old flapper. I scrubbed everything down with a brillo pad, reinstalled the original flapper and so far, so good, no leaks! Thanks again.
You all probably dont care at all but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Kalel Jon Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Your video was so helpful...thank you! I was about to replace everything inside the tank. That wouldn't have been much fun because these things don't ever go easily at all. Something always goes wrong or something is irreparably rusted shut or whatever. All I had to do is what you showed in the video which was so easy to understand and do. A simple fix to say the least and I had everything I needed right here and didn't cost me a penny to fix the problem. Now I'm enjoying sitting here in thequiet because I don't have to listen to my well pump kick on at least once or twice an hour.
I'm glad you emphasize LAYING THE LID ON THE FLOOR. I tried fixing my toilet before seeing your video and I leaned my lid against the wall. As you might have guessed, it fell over and broke. Thanks for the helpful information!
Thank you for this video. I had to change the flapper but that was only a dollar fifty. Cleaning the flap and flap seat just wasn't enough. Hey, I didn't have to call a plumber and pay $40 for something that simple. Thanks again!
the picture compilation and video worked good together and was real informative. The only thing I would have added was to show an example of what a leaky Flapper causes. Should have shown water running into the bowl before you fixed it and how it looks after. Other than that 4 of 5. Thank You
This is the first time I tried repairing my cistern and it worked!! I am so proud of myself. Of course I couldn't do it without your excellent and clear instruction - no more plumbing fears or spending $ for me. Thank you so much!!
I agree, but the 1.6 actually was3.2 or 4.8 gallons because the toilet required several flushes. Also we were experiencing clogging with 1.6 which has completely cleared with the larger flush.
I just did nearly this same process on an old Elger. I did use a Scotchbrite kitchen sponge dipped in vinegar to help dissolve the lime buildup. Not clear how to remove that flapper, so I cleaned it very gently as assembled, and used a small brush as well. The seat also. This stopped a rather audible tank trickle. It may be 99 or 100% fixed (the rubber is pliant and may still settle) but I can always do another pass of cleaning rather than over-clean too much & ruin a part. Thanks!
I called the city because my bill had slowly increased over the last year. $40.00 to 67.00. A year ago, I steadily used around 4000 gallons per mo., with a cost of $6.28. My last bill said I used 10,000 gallons, with a charge of $22.03, and I live alone. I was stubborn that there was something wrong with my meter and they need to re-calibrate it. CS man came an detected a very, very slow leak that I could notice looking at the meter. Bottom line: I was "leaking" about 400 gallons per day!!!! If I changed out the flapper last year, I would have saved around $125. bucks! P.S. and don't let you hoses leak either! Learned my lessons!!
Thanks for the video. We have a Kohler, and I replaced the flapper. You can still hear it leaking. Must be the seal or is it called seat? Will search for a video on that.
very good and very through video. Nice job! a quick question - can you have problems with the o-ring between the flapper and the tank? I've tried a new flapper and the the wool, and there's a trickle of water still (sounds like a tiny stream). Maybe I just was a bit to gentle on my scrubbing. thanks, and again great video
I tried this but it didn't work for me so I decided to replace the flapper valve but my valve is slanted so I purchased the flapper valve kit by korky it comes with a flapper and a ring for the flapper valve seat and silicone I dried the seat with alcohol added silicone to seat and placed it on the seat of flapper valve seat waited about 90 minutes but instructions state 15 and then added new flapper adjusted flapper chain and no leaks. I hope this lasts a long time. #handyWOman
A very informative video. I followed it and changed my flapper, but the toilet is still leaking with a new flapper. What could be wrong? What to do next??
The gasket on my flapper ( identical to yours) was shot. Kohler doesn't sell the gasket anymore but sells a whole new rubber flapper for $8.50. I believe replacement gaskets are available on the aftermarket.
The "snap on" is the flapper itself. You can use Korky universal Flappers which will fit into the same toilet, as well as other brands, but they don't snap on, but they very easily attach by moving the rubber loops over each poll as oppsed to snapping it down with the Kohlet Flapper. And the Kohler flapper can be used on Crane and other toilets. And he's right about clogging when it's set to a 1.6 gallon flush, It's better to set it to flush longer by adjusting the float.
Thank you so much! I think you just found my clogging for 10 years, problem!!! NO PLUMBER HAS EVER TOLD ME THIS!!!!! THEY JUST KEEP COMING OUT AND CHARGING ME $270.00 TO TELL ME I NEED NEW GUTS PUT IN (of the toilet flapper unit) and they need another $315.00 to do this!!!!! Right there, right then! As I was crying and writing them a check for the $270.00...I told them No Thank you! They were stunned!!! And reason so ex[pensive because two men came out!!! WHY would a simple clogging (plus needed flapper fixed or replaced) take 2 strong men to do the job??? Only hire one man plumber, or one man and his son , singularly coming out to fix! I lost my great old plumbers son! he barely charged me anything! Don't ever hire a big plumbing company, with a secretary, a manager, and lots of plumbers!!! OVERHEAD and keeping all fo them working and an office to rent!!! Boy, did I learn an expensive lesson. Plus my handyman charged me a high bill, too! So find a honest handyman!!!! Hard to find! Bjut keep interviewing! Finally you will find some good men out there.
Hey, I think I have the same Kohler low flush toilet. Recently I've been experiencing an INTERMITTENT slow leak and it's has not been easy to diagnose. I have heard the fill valve come on to fill the tank once. I have seen water trickling down the sides of the bowel once. But, they happened on separate times and I was lucky to be in the bathroom when it did. So, I know I have a leak and the re-cycling of filling, leak, filling the tank. As a matter of fact, since I saw the trickling of water down the sides of the bowl I took off the lid to the tank. I've seen the water level drop several inches at night, but next morning it's full again. Therefore, I've clean the flapper and the flush valve seat. Btw, both were pretty clean already. It still had a slow leak. However, back when I was cleaning the flush valve seat and looking down the hole leading to the bowl I did notice that the bottom rim of the flush valve (the neck, below the flapper) was broken. A 1 inch lip of the rim (but had not broken off) was bent up toward the center of the hole. This will no doubt restrict the flush of water to the bowel a bit, but I don't see how it would affect the water level which is above the flapper. I don't know maybe it's just the flapper. Oh, I didn't notice any cracks on the overflow tube either.
Hmmm.. My flapper valve does not have a rubber gasket like the one in your video. I cleaned the bottom of the flapper off and reinstalled it. Still leaks....Guess I will remove it again and take it to the hardware store....Thanks a million for this video! Single mom with a kid in college....Do not have the luxury of calling a plumber these days so really appreciate this video and giving it a like for sure :-)
Mine is the same way! I kept telling him it needed to be fixed, I guess he realized when the water bill was doubled! I will be cleaning both of mine today. Hopefully that is the problem, I have a feeling though that mine dried out when we had a pipe bust and didn't have water for nearly a week.
I had to stop watching the video early on so I could move the tank lid from sitting across the corner of the bathroom counter to someplace flat (I put it on some newspapers in the tub)... thanks for saving me from a bonehead mistake...
Thanks for the video! Our water bill has been almost as much as out electric bill....which has been ouch :/ 2 out of our 3 toilets have been running non stop. We had someone come in to fix it. He cleaned it, but it made it worse. I think the seal/stopper needs to be replaced and now I know how to do it! Thanks....hoping this works :)
I have the exact same toilet. I cleaned the flapper as shown and still have a leak. I have the flapper on order and if that doesn’t work I will try replacing the rubber seal next, if those two things don’t work what should I replace next? Anyone have any knowledge?
@ClassicManuals These additives are actually harmful for the rubber? Is there any that can withstand them? I really like how the chlorine balls keep the bowls clean.
Hey ClassicManuals, Just Moved In To A New House And The Main Line Coming Up From The Floor Wont Stop! I Turned The Valve Off But Its Still Coming From The Water line In The Tank. Its Plastic Tubing Not Metal( Dont Know If It Makes A Differences?) But The Flapper Looks Fine, Cleaned It Off And Still Leaking! The Floater Thing Seems To Be Good, Whats Going On??!! Thanks For The Upload:)
If you get a Kohler toiler get a good plunger too they are the worst flushing 1.6 gpf toilets made. Being a plumber I can't tell you how many of these I rip out.
My current flapper is hard plastic and where it connects I haven't found away to remove it. I just don't want to break the stem that it's attached to. Any recommendations. Thank you

Well that worked. I was about to give up and call a plumber! Thank you for taking the time.
This was exactly what I needed !! Thank you !! Saved me a trip to the local hardware store, or an expensive plumbing bill !! Very Helpful !
Thank you! Ran down to Walmart and picked up the korky flapper for $3.47 - saved me the $69.00 an hour for the plumber!
This is a great video with great simple detailed explanation along with good pictures. Thanks a lot.
Excellent video. As a single female I feel confident enough now to attempt this. Thank you!

@Kyrie Nicholas instablaster =)
@Kalel Jon Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Kalel Jon it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
@Kyrie Nicholas Happy to help :)
Your video was so helpful...thank you! I was about to replace everything inside the tank. That wouldn't have been much fun because these things don't ever go easily at all. Man, this really worked. Thanks! It didn't even seem that dirty but cleaning it and it instantly worked as it should.
I'm glad you emphasize LAYING THE LID ON THE FLOOR. I tried fixing my toilet before seeing your video and I leaned my lid against the wall. As you might have guessed, it fell over and broke. Thanks for the helpful information!
I did the same thing.
You are a wonderful, thorough instructor.
I wasn't aware that it was possible to make a ten minute video on just a flapper alone. Impressive.
EPICNESS!
It's all in the details...
It's a fascinating topic.
Very funny! Thanks! 😃
Just a note to say thanks for your help. Followed instructions worked perfectly..
How to replace an American Standard flapper valve
How to replace fill valve in toilet
This worked! Thanks! I used a tooth brush to brush of the grime and it worked. Thank you so much! Had this problem for weeks now.
yep, I just did too, didn't have the scotch pad, seems to be working
I appreciate this zero cost fix!!! Thank you so much for your advice & guidance. 👏
That was really good. I enjoyed the presentation. The instructions are clear. Thank you. David
Thank you for this video. I had to change the flapper but that was only a dollar fifty. Cleaning the flap and flap seat just wasn't enough. Hey, I didn't have to call a plumber and pay $40 for something that simple. Thanks again!

Great video.
How did you outflush the entire tank in this 1.6 gal toilet as you mentioned you did?
I agree, but the 1.6 actually was3.2 or 4.8 gallons because the toilet required several flushes. Also we were experiencing clogging with 1.6 which has completely cleared with the larger flush.
This video helped me fix my toilet at no cost, thanks for making it.
very good, very simple, very thoughful of you to tell us what to do next.

thanks for the lesson, it solved my problem at just the right price.
Very clearly filmed and explained -- well done!
i will give it a shot. look like Robert has it done pat! Thanks for all the info Robert!
Thanks a bunch. You just saved me a couple bucks and a trip to the hardware store.

Nice. Clear, even to a “ not a handyman” guy. Thanks.
Worked like a charm! A clean rag worked, thanks a lot!
I had some sort of white strand of what looked and felt like tofu causing my leak. So glad I got it solved. Thank you.
Thank you, I had forgotten about doing this procedure! WORKED!
You didn't "forget"... you didn't know about this until you watched the video. Be honest for once.
Thanks for the video. We have a Kohler, and I replaced the flapper. You can still hear it leaking. Must be the seal or is it called seat? Will search for a video on that.
Awesome video. Fixed my issue in 5 minutes. Nice post.
Moiz Tayabji oops
very good and very through video. Nice job! a quick question - can you have problems with the o-ring between the flapper and the tank? I fixed mine after watching your video. Thanks a lot.
Fixed! Thanks for saving my sanity!
A very informative video.
I followed it and changed my flapper, but the toilet is still leaking with a new flapper. What could be wrong? What to do next??

Thanks for the walk through, helped me fix a problem at no cost! A+ Cheers.
Mine is the same way! I kept telling him it needed to be fixed, I guess he realized when the water bill was doubled! I will be cleaning both of mine today. Hopefully that is the problem, I have a feeling though that mine dried out when we had a pipe bust and didn't have water for nearly a week.
Thank you so much, this totally fixed the problem my wife kept complaining about.
Thanks for this video! Quite some calcic was the issue here, so the scourer trick worked for me, thank & greetings from NL/Europe.
I had to stop watching the video early on so I could move the tank lid from sitting across the corner of the bathroom counter to someplace flat (I put it on some newspapers in the tub)... thanks for saving me from a bonehead mistake...
Wow..I think you just saved me a service call, and repair cost. Thanks so much :-)
Thanks for the video!
How’s it working now…?
Well I'll be - this fixed it. I'd bought two different flappers for the wretched thing as well. Thanks!
Good video for those of us who don't know anything about toilets other than pooping in them.
Great tutorial, i think my seat is the culprit. flapper only a year or two old??
Tks a million-- good ole common sense works every time..appreciate the video
This video was very helpful and solved my problem. Thank you!!!
@ClassicManuals These additives are actually harmful for the rubber? Is there any that can withstand them? I really like how the chlorine balls keep the bowls clean.
Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to post this video.
what if the scotch pad doesnt work and the seat is worn out? is it easy to replace the seat? or can i scrub it enough to smooth it out?
I put a whole new replacement kit in the tank overflow and flapper, the damn thing still leaks past to the bowl....grrrr
For the Algorithm.
Genius. I think that you solved my situation.
Thank you very much.
If you get a Kohler toiler get a good plunger too they are the worst flushing 1.6 gpf toilets made. Being a plumber I can't tell you how many of these I rip out.
You can always replace the valve/float part that is adjustable to use more water. Much cheaper for the consumer than replacing the whole toilet. 😉
Are you using any chlorine or blue bowl additives? These additives destroy these rubber seals.
Worked like a charm.
How do you increase the amount of water that fills the tank?
THANKS! This worked great. Fixed it.
Thanks, great video...although the pads didnt work for me and I used a SOS brillo pad and that did the job...
My current flapper is hard plastic and where it connects I haven't found away to remove it. I just don't want to break the stem that it's attached to. Any recommendations. Thank you
Thank you. I think this was the trick to fix my toilet.
great video, i love the tip about the tank lid. thats the kind of thing i want to learn, thats what you taught me. thank you sir!
Best teaching video! Thank you, this worked!
Clear and easy to follow. Thank you very much .
How do you change the flush to get more water? My toilet is a l.6 gallon flush and it clogs all the time.
Thank you. I am going to try this as soon as I get some food coloring.
god bless you i am a female and this was exactly the problem
Your video is very helpful. Thank you!
Great video this solved my problem! Thanks so much!
