My toilet was leaking, so I called three plumbers asking how much it would cost for them to fix it. Assuming it was the wax ring that needed replacing, the lowest price I was quoted was $175. Then I searched for and found this video instead. And so with about fifteen dollars worth of supplies from Home Depot and forty five minutes of effort following your instructions one step at a time, I now have a working toilet and a dry floor. THANK YOU VERY MUCH and enjoy your cup of coffee!

I’m not a plumber and I try to be a do-it-yourselfer whenever possible, but it’s frustrating to hear people complain about being ripped off by prices that professionals charge for simple repairs. We all know that time is money. You’re paying for their time as well as saving your time, so theirs a price for that. Do you really think someone is going to go into business, come over to your house not knowing exactly what all is involved, scheduling their day accordingly, and replace a wax ring on your toilet charging you only $40 or so? I think it’s great that this information is out there for those of us who wish to do it ourselves to save some money but don’t beat up the businessman who’s trying to make a living. I know people who would gladly pay the price to have someone else do it , just so they don’t have to mess with it or to free up their own time. Thanks for the video, very informative & appreciated.

My mans, i appreciate your comment. But what about the guys who come out and lie to get more money? For example, my elderly mother called plumber to fix a toilet leak. They told it it be $700 job because the toilet was cracked and thats why it was leaking, so they had to replace her whole toilet. 🚽. I went over to her house, i looked and i seen it was just the normal leak from the rubber gaskets being to old. So it was leaking from one bolt because of the rubber gasket was old, all the rubber gaskets leak from old age eventually. So all i had to do was buy the bolt kit and i replaced all the bolts plus i knew , might as well replace all the inside parts to, because from experience i know those will probably be failing any time soon as well. So i bought the whole inside parts replacement kit for $28. So the plumber who comes out was trying to take advantage of a widowed elderly woman and charge her $700 to replace the whole toilet 🚽. When a $27 repair kit is all it needed. So this shows you how heartless and evil some plumbers are, to BOLDLY lie so easily and say the toilet was cracked and thats why it was leaking when anyone could see it was one bolt leaking because of the rubber gasket was to old. From my experience those rubber gaskets last like 10 to 15 years, then you have to replace them, its just life and they all last about that long. But chill bro, your comment your acting like plumbers all knights in shining armor who just charge a fair price. And you totally ignore the majority of the time plumbers trying to take advantage of elderly people. So be more fair next time with your comment and dont forget to mention the many evil plumbers. ✌️

Another tip for aligning the toilet with the flange bolts is to cut some plastic straws about 6" long and place them over the bolts. As you lower the toilet bowl onto the straws, they will slide right in place and onto the bolts. Great job as always, Leah! 👍

Great instruction! I discovered a leak by noticing a wet spot on my basement ceiling and sure enough it was coming from the base of the toilet. I never replaced a wax ring before but your instruction showed me that the process wasn't so bad. The liquid solidifier was an awesome tip than I would have never known about if I didn't see it on your video. The good news is that replacing the wax ring was the problem and now everything is working great! Please keep posting great DIY content! Informative and calming instruction. Might add that before lifting the toilet, remove the tank's lid. Anything to make it lighter is helpful! And it might also avoid it flipping off and breaking when lifting and moving the toilet. Enjoy your thoroughness and subscribers that respect your good work.

A small tip from my experience: Sometimes you unable to see a small leakage from water supply line, because it leaks about 1 drop in a minute. To test this kind of leakage you can use a regular toilet paper sheets. Just put it on a possible problem area (put on the floor below connection or wrap around the tube) for a couple of hours. It shows you whether leaks or not even if waterdrops will dry.

As I am freaking out to get my home in shipshape condition to put on market by next weekend, I noticed at 2:00 AM that the cleaning crew must have knocked the toilet loose from the base. One of the flange bolts (I had no idea what this was until seeing this video) came loose and some water was leaking out of the base. My stress level went from 10/10 up to 20/10. After watching this video, my stress level dropped down to the usual 10/10 (it will get back to a healthy 1 or 2 /10 once I sell the house), and I can sleep easy knowing what to do tomorrow morning. Thank you so much for dropping some knowledge on us! Love your videos . I installed a brand new toilet, but a couple months later dark blotches formed on the right side/front of the toilet. For some more context, I laid down sheet vinyl flooring. It’s on a slab of mostly leveled concrete. I caulked all around the toilet so not sure how it could be that, but that’s what I’m thinking it is. I used the wax ring that came with the toilet. It felt small and EXTREMELY SOFT. Like abnormally mushy. What’s the texture supposed feel like, good amount of resistance, right?
Also, I learned there’s two sizes of wax ring? My flange had a break in it from the previous owner, so I had to buy an adapter/extension. Maybe I need a bigger ring?
Going to cut out a portion of the affected flooring and lay some newspapers down to see where the possible origin is. Thx again for your contributions to society. Your influence touches so many. My neighbor and I were talking abt my problem, and she said I should check you channel on RUclips. I said I knew abt her a while ago! 😎 thanks again!

Also not included when you move in a flat, previous people has the toilet not screwed to floor at all. Ridiculous right?

    Hi Leah
    Love your channel
Wish you would have shown us the actual install of the toilet and how tight do you screw down the nuts ( looks like you only tightened them with your hands). For beginner DIYers the install of the toilet it’s self gives the most of us anxiety.
I’ve leaned a lot from watching you and felt I can share my 2cents.
    Thanks

I had to take a minute to thank you for sharing your videos and knowledge! What stood out to me the most is the way you explain each step clearly and to the point. I've seen other videos that ramble so much without getting to the point that I lose interest and learn nothing lol I hope you continue making videos! Have a blessed day!! thank you!!

Wow thank you for this video. We moved into a “new” home a few weeks ago and it’s been nothing but problems. Previous owner did a really cheap/crappy remod. The toilet started leaking around the bowl tonight but thanks to you I was able to fix it quickly and on my own. Of course, the flange was below the flooring the previous owner installed recently and it was evident he just stacked two wax rings together. I used a Danco perfect seal and it worked great...hopeful it holds . Thanks again. Looking forward to more videos

I'm going to add some advice. If the flange is 3/8" above the finished floor(where it should be) use a regular bowl wax. The bowl wax is not designed to be a "waterproof" seal. It's designed to prevent odor and airborne moisture. There's a horn integral with the toilet. That horn will sit down inside the flange. If you use a bowl wax with the added plastic horn, the water will splash against that plastic horn. Sometimes, the flange is only 3" and using the extra plastic horn type bowl wax will distort the plastic and cause leaks. That's bad. Why the extra horn? If the flange is flush with the finished floor, the integral horn will be just above the flange, not down inside the flange. That's bad. So, they've made this double wax or an added horn to the wax to somehow mitigate that problem. Homeowners will often have a new floor added on top of an existing floor without raising the flange. That has caused more destroyed bathroom floors than anything else. A properly installed flange sits 3/8" above the floor. A master plumber with 44 years in the trade.. Believe what I'm telling y'all

You are 100% correct. The wax rings with the built in horn were originally designed for the old "lead bends" that were flat on the floor with no closet shoe!!!

Good one Leah. Personally I ccan do a lot of things as DYIr, but plumging is not high on my list. One thing I have noticed, a lot of the valves and fixes you buy from the hardware store are good things for the DYIer and are user friendly. With that said, I am doing better in the plumbing area. Thanks for the video. Be safe. Tim

My husband and I know about the wax ring. We found out about the wax ring because we had a plumber come to our house to unclog our toilet. He used something called a “snake”. In using it he broke the wax ring. Following the steps in your video, you are right. Anybody can fix a leaky toilet. But I'd rather call a plumber. LOL. Your video lets me know if I'm being cheated or getting poor quality handyman work!

Thanks Leah, what an informative and helpful video! You inspired me to do this myself. Any reason why you go for wax over the (blue) rubber toilet seal? Will the rubber one be as reliable as wax?
Update! I fixed it. So easy thanks to your instructions. Went with 2x wax ring. Really appreciate the videos and a little proud to boot that I did it myself.

You are a great teacher. I had a plumber replace the wax ring, $125, but he set the toilet on old dry caulking that he didn’t even remove, and left a wobbly toilet, didn’t caulk around it, and the flange bolts are wobbly. Time for me to fix it and do it myself from now on.
