If you actually want to know the answer to the question in the title, the Marathon course at the 1908 British Olympic Games was planned to be from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium, a distance of 26 miles. However, the King asked for the finish line to be in front of the Royal Box, adding 385 yards. This new distance was accepted as the international standard in 1921.
I ran the Brighton marathon in 2021 as my first ever marathon. Funny story was the course was measured wrong and it was later confirmed as being 570 meters too long!! I now use this to my advantage and tell people that I’ve ran an ultra! 😂
I did the Goring Gap 50km ultra a couple of years ago and turns out I’d not read it right. It was 52km. “Where’s the finish” I uttered at the 50k marker. That last 2km was the hardest 2km I’ve ever done.
I'm running my first ultra on Thursday. Inspired by Mary Johnson's TRC video from three years back, I will try for an FKT. Please, let her know that she continues to inspire through time.
I was at an immigration desk and was wearing my Manchester marathon T-shirt. The officer asked me if I really ran it as 26 miles is a really long distance…and I was like, how dare you? IT’S 26.2 MILES!! Thankfully she didn’t have me deported 😂!
I did the Brighton marathon last week and agree with Sarah's comments; the support was absolutely incredible. My race didn't go very well, but I still had a great day. I only did one 20 mile run in training and a few around 15 miles, and have come to believe that I should have done far more. I will be aiming to do multiple 20+ mile in my next marathon training block.
Same here! And also same regarding only doing one 32km run. Will do more for my second marathon. Also puked at 31km ish (and again after the finish), which has never happened to me before. Couldn't stomach any more water or gels after that unfortunately. Quite an eventful day!
Currently in week 10 of training for my first marathon using the running channel plan! Slightly panicking after I read on Reddit yesterday that the mileage I have been doing is not enough to feel comfortable on race day 😬
You'll do fine. I missed two weeks of marathon training due to appendectomy. I did very well. In fact I did a PB. No one ever does all of the training. Make sure you do your long runs and hills. You'll be fine
Nothing is enough to make you feel comfortable on race day. It's a marathon. If you followed the plan, it's hard but doable; you'll be fine. And feel great having accomplished it.
2:50 I’ve only ran one marathon so might not be the best experiment, but in my training my longest runs were 26km (16 miles), and I was very pleased with my time. It’s normal in the Hanson plan
I want to say the marathon before that varied, but it was around 25 miles. The route that the messenger ran is run annually and is called the Spartathalon. It is one of the hardest ultramarathons in the world
I ran the Brighton Marathon last weekend and had the joy of finishing with my son who was running his first marathon. I thought the wind was not too bad more cooling rather than slowing us down. Yes Brighton Marathon is hilly but try looking at the Clarendon which is a trail marathon with 840m of elevation and can be very muddy.
Hi Sarah, Amazing video. Incredible mindset! I think you’ve got a 3:33:47 marathon on the cards. Myself and my friend will be running the T50 50 mile trail next summer and in preparation we will be doing Chester marathon in October. We’ve seen Runna before and the marathon plan will be great for October but their ultra marathon training plan will be perfect for the 50 mile run next summer! Running has had a huge impact on our lives recently having completed our first half marathon and achieved things we could have never believed. We’ve both raised our confidence levels and if all else fails we’ll have that. Honestly would love to win the giveaway but, if not, having seen your perspective on forcing yourself to try the scary things whilst reaching for a goal, that’s a good enough takeaway for us. Good luck and I hope you smash the London marathon!
Interesting video. Just to add a little more confusion to your argument was that firstly, the Brighton Marathon last weekend was actually 26.4 miles, not 26.2. Secondly, we have a local event in Surrey named the Elstead Marathon. This measures around 8 miles. It would appear that any event before sometime in the 1950's could be called a "marathon".
@runningchannel .....Andy as you love the New Forest so much, you should come and run our 10mile race in October. The NF10 starts from New Park in Brockenhurst, and is hosted by my running club The New Forest Runners. Fab event on a great course.
Actually guys I have checked and walking up the steps to Pall Mall from the finish and going that way to Bateman Street appears to be 0.8 miles. I hope to check this properly this weekend.
Injuries are interesting because matter fact I’ve gotten adductor messed up my hip flexor and messed up my ab something other doctor said and it wasn’t fully running. I fell through a porch and then I had a 50 K following weekend and I was still a little sore, but I went and did it and when I did that I ripped some stuff but my, therapist told me a lot of these injuries. He said they’re not gonna get better by you just laying on the couch he said you gotta get out and work him. He told me it’s like an old rusty bikes so you put it in the in the garage, it stays an old rusty bicycle until he gets some oil out there so they’re giving me exercises andtoday I just did two whole miles on the treadmill. It felt like I did two marathons but we’re getting there at a whole took me 28 minutes to do 2 miles but I’m moving again great video enjoying it.
Hello TRC, love your videos and podcasts. I have question that some other runners could relate. I am training for WFL2024 which is in 2weeks. But unfortunately i was ill for last week and i am wondering how should i restart training block. I dont want to restart where i left, as i still can feel that my lungs are not as fresh and strong as before illness. And i know its hard to train anything in two weeks. I suppose i should skip hard seesions and focus on low intensity tranings, long runs to gain aeorgic base and give lungs time to recover. happy to hear your advice.thanks
Ran a trail marathon today, they play pretty fast & lose with the distance, ended up at 27.7 miles! Not knowing quite how long it would be made the end even harder, I may have asked like a kid, "are we nearly there yet"😂 But I guess I'm now an ultra marathoner😮
I swear to the lord I never know what to tell people about the marathin distance, its so convoluted 😆 from now on I'll send them this video. Also I'm so excited because I decided to try a super shoe/xarbon playe for my next matahon (Athens 😇😇).
Re running off the niggle, I’d say yes it’s possible in the right circumstances (eg tight glutes causing knee pain) but jeez beginner runners be careful it’s not always wise.
In the middle of training for my 2nd ever marathon, had great fitness 6 weeks ago before getting an achilles injury, slowly getting back into it, but havent done any intervals in 5 weeks. Wondering if I can get up to speed or not with 6 weeks left😅
Is it ok to use the whole road during a race as long as you’re within the boundaries, and not stay in one lane? Maybe it’s just a back of the pack thing, but even when a 2-lane road is completely reserved for runners, most runners stay in the same lane, as if they’re driving, instead of taking the shortest route using both lanes. Running the Surfer’s Path Half Marathon tomorrow, from Santa Cruz to Capitola and back (California). Goal is simply not to be last!😀
The course should be measured such that you can take the shortest path that stays within the boundaries. So yes, it is ok, and actually the distance the other runners take will be slightly longer than the official race distance.
Speaking of running off a niggle, what about running off a cold/flu? Have had to take a break from c25k to rest an ankle injury and got sick in the meantime so I’ve had about 7 days off. Went for a short run to get myself back into running today, despite still feeling ill. And since coming back I’ve felt quite a bit better! (Hopefully it’s not just runners high and I won’t feel awful again later 😅).
13:11 look up the Battle of Marathon 😊. The City of Athens repulsed a Persian amphibious landing. A messenger then went from Marathon to Athens to inform Athens of the victory, and like you said according to legend, he died after yelling out the message. At least that's a very high level summation of Marathon.
@s98715 modern Athens marathon replicates his run. Starts from marathon, ends in athens and it is 26,2 miles. We really don't know the exact starting point and finish of the original run. Could have been a bit more or less.
@@panosprogdeath8077 You can look up the reason why the Marathon is 26.2 miles and it is not because that was the distance that Phidippides originally ran. The distance of the marathon has changed many times throughout its history, the last change being because King Edward VII of England asked to extend the distance.
The same guy who, according to legend, ran from Athens to Sparta, also did run from Marathon to Athens to deliver word of the Athenian victory over Persia in the Persian Wars. Again, according to legend, as all this was so long ago! I have a question for the podcast team: which day of the week do you think is best for the long run? Sunday seems to be the most popular choice but I find it best to have a Saturday long run and rest on Sunday. Monday doesn’t work as well as a rest day for me. Also races in Finland are almost always on Saturdays, so a Saturday long run is a good simulation. Gotta say I don’t do Parkrun because it’s too early. 😂 If you decide to answer my question, I’m Matilda from Helsinki, Finland. :)
Great fact Matilda! We tend to find that most people do their long runs on a Saturday because it is their least busy day of the week - which ever day works for you though is perfect!
The question about covid etc knocking out a couple of weeks from the running plan was a good issue to raise. Would it help to add a couple of weeks at the beginning of the plan to further build up the base just in case? I'm planning to do my first marathon next year. Any marathoners out there think this extended plan is somehow feasible?
I think a bit of extra base building is a great idea. lots of people do it. No hard rules about how long a marathon program should be (just not too short:-) Make sure there's an easy/easier week every few weeks, so maybe 2 or 3 weeks extra base building, then an easier week then start some good plan
Every time i run i Marathon i ask myself: What if the Persians landed on the shores of Athens instead of Marathon ? 🤔 We probably would have a much shorter run 😁😁😁
My friends bailed running the marathon with me in two weeks, I’m so scared now! I go from wanting to bail to I can do it! 😂 (there is a virtual option too!) I’m just worried because this marathon has a strict 15 min/mile cut off time. And I’m a slow runner. I’m having doubts!
