i REALLY ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO, and I've seen about 1,000 re: tiny living. Handled a broken axle on the fly, wow! You covered the points masterfully. Best wishes to you both.
From City To Gritty : In 1991 my wife and I traveled from Australia to the USA, bought a 1974 Chevy van (ex-ambo with fiberglass high roof) and crossed the country from West Coast to East Coast. Good times! I just turned 50 and it's time to do it all again. Appreciate your video and views on a different and more modern ambo. See you guys on the road. ;-)
One of the best platforms to build off of. Storage and more storage! Plus the weight factor. They are hard to beat. I just wish they would add six inches to the interior height. Great job sofar. And after the container is done the final build will be a great video. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Love it guys!!!!! Bet you have some cool times in there! I really love that instead of buying some boring vehicle you chose one that is multi purpose and super functional! Love!
The insulation power storage and suspension with alarm system would have cost a lot of money. The work truck is great instead of hotel and restraint meals. The federal per diem $55 per day for meals can pay for RV camp parking and meals. I have a 97 Chevy express cutaway with industrial steel storage boxes on the outside. The interior is 11' x 6' as well. The only issue is it needs insulation. I am going to use walk in cooler panels. By doing that I can haul seafood totes inside using a refer or dry ice to chill insulated 1/2 totes that hold 500# each. The wiring system is great on your ambulance. You can mount a platform on the back with storage or instal a tailgate lift . they make a portable shower tent you can use while boon docking next to your hot water. You can install a window between cab and box they make a rubber gasket you can buy.
Frazier makes nice generator ambulances. I worked for a service that used them exclusively. They do have some quirks though, especially with the air ride system. Also, the shackles holding the axle to the truck or supposed to be retorqued every 10000 miles I believe.
Chris Sokol lmao, very funny you say that. It is the only problem I have ever had are with those blasted shackles on the air ride in the back. They slipped and popped one of the air bags in the middle of the badlands in New Mexico. I have been fighting to get the rear end lined up straight ever since.
I have been researching converting an ambulance as well. There are so many good reasons to do it, cost-effectiveness, electrical wiring done, well insulated. Are the outside compartments waterproof?
Cheryl Maloney yes all of the outside compartments are waterproof. They have gaskets around them so they seal when they're closed. I have a similar Style it's a year 2000 but they're pretty well-built the same.
Very nice! It's usually the drivetrain that wears out. Find another F350 crew cab and get the frame extended and transplant the box onto the newer drivetrain. Pull the bench out of the back of the crew cab and replace with two bucket seats. At this point you can probably cut in a pass through, it will be short but still a pass through.
Very nice setup, thanks for sharing. If only the ceiling was couple inches taller. Maybe it is possible to strip some equipment/insulation off the the ceiling (or the floor), to make more head room for Taylor?
Very nice I love what you did with the conversion! Utilize what you have and keep it simple. I purchased an ambulance a few weeks ago it's a 2000 Ford F-450 with a 7.3 liter Turbo diesel and it works pretty well for what it is. I bought it to use as our beach vehicle cuz we live a couple hours from the beach and on the weekends it's nice to be able to go and stay the night. I also got it to take on fishing trips and camping trips but I'm up in arms as to whether I'm going to keep it or not and do a conversion. I like it but I also use it as a daily driver and of course it's not the greatest in fuel economy so using it as a daily driver doesn't seem so practical I need to get an additional vehicle to use as my economic vehicle but then I've got insurance to pay for if I do that. I've got it up for sale right now but I'm not going to sell it unless I get what I'm asking for it it's worth it for me to just keep if I don't and if I do all end up doing a conversion. You guys have some excellent ideas thanks for sharing!
We have a 1993 ambo conversion, spent five months on the road this past winter. We love it! Check out a RUclips tour our friends did on their channel, Destination Openroad:)
Great build! This has given me so many ideas- I was thinking about a mini school bus or a box truck, but now I'm looking for an ambulance like this! Seems like the best of the both worlds. I wonder how it handles in ice/snow? Also, I'm used to seeing ambos with a pass through from cab to the box?
Very nice Conversion. After seeing a kot of ways to convert vehicles into Campers your build solidified my decision to get an Ambulance. What did you use to hinge your murphy Bed?
Just fyi what you called a "captains chair" is acutely the CPR chair. The captain chair is taken out, but it would've sat in front of the oxygen compartment, now your water tank.
Great, this is house and work garage in on. Perfect. Wish you lots of joy with that Ford, that is my best car make. I drive just Ford and i im very hapy driver.
Great idea and a great video - apart from the appalling wind noise! :-) I'd LOVE to know how many miles to the gallon you get; I'll bet it isn't many! Good Luck to you both, anyway.
It's not impossible to back up with it the camera. You just need to learn to use your mirrors. Also the captains seat would have been where your water tanks are. And that single seat is known as the cpr seat.
just want to say thank you. I had already decided to go nomad but was on the fence about what kind of vehicle but your detailed descritption was what I was looking for. Hope to see you out there! Also where did you get that stove?
@@fromcitytogritty9122 Thanks for the quick response. Was looking for a 7.3 but considering what you paid and the mileage it give me hope of finding a '11 or later model.

Hey Taylor! I just bought an 89' Ambo as well!! Gonna convert it into a Tiny Home for full-time live-in while I go back to school. Hey I was wondering how you went about finding insurance for your rig? I'm having a difficult time finding someone who will insure mine as a custom conversion. Any help would be SUPER appreciated. Many thanks man. Drive safe!
Tobiah Rex I had difficulty myself with insurance. I went with State Farm and my agent made me remove all the emergency lights and striping from the sides. You have to prove to them that it is not a commercial vehicle. They made me send pictures and everything.
Taylor!!! You're info totally got me in the door with GoodSam insurance. They did exactly what you said, asked me to submit photos and they'll cover me. Man, what a relief. Was getting super nervous there for a second. Thanks again!!
Yeah!! I gotta finish the conversion. Not a big RUclipsr, but i'll post some videos when she's finished. Goal is finished by March 1st. :) Thanks again!
Hi Guys! Nice video. I'm thinking of buying an ambulance as my everyday vehicle, but I'm concerned about gas mileage....especially with the high price of diesel. How many mpg does your rig get. Also, do you work on your vehicle or do you have to find a diesel mechanic? Thanks for sharing part of your story with us!!!😁
Halli Adams I use mine as a daily driver, 12mpg is the best I have gotten. I am in the process of getting a performance programmer that may improve upon that. I do the work myself but have had no major engine trouble yet. The only problems I have ever had are with the air suspension in the back end which are all specialized parts that are very expensive. Thank you for watching.
My 2000 Ford F450 with a 7.3 L diesel gets about 11 miles per gallon. I have everything stock, I haven't put any performance chips in it to increase the fuel mileage and Power. I have the ambulance up for sale currently but if I do end up keeping it I'll be putting the chip in and report back with what it did as far as power boost and fuel economy. I do know for sure that adding in a propane conversion kit or more like a propane assistance kit that feeds propane into the engine that will definitely give you better fuel mileage because it allows the diesel to burn more completely.

Is the water heater vented to the outside? Is the AC vented to the outside? I did not see these, when you showed the exterior. The wife should be tested for porphyria. I had the same problem, she has, with needing to eat, or else. It is adult onset, so the full force symptoms will not show until you are about 50 years, or so. It is a genetic condition that is passed on, to all your children, but only 50% of them will have the active gene. If you find out you have porphyria write back to me, in the comments, and I can give you an anti-oxidant/supplement protocol, that will diminish most of the symptoms. I am not a doctor, I have porphyria, and have done lots of research. If anyone finds out your doctor has labeled you either a drug seeker, or hypochondriac, because they cannot diagnose your symptoms, it is time to demand he/she test you for Porphyria, or find a new doctor, who will test you.
