Oh my gosh, $15K is crazy good for the price of it. Wow. I am a paramedic and our trucks aren't even that nice and our trucks are over $200k brand new. You got a great deal. Also your campulance has great neat drawers and space. Sweet truck. Have fun!
Major score on your "CAMP"-ulance - love it. I'm seriously looking forward to this redesign as I think your tiny house design was da bomb. Thank you so much and wishing you both well on your continued adventures. Looking forward to much more.
Used ambulances are quite common on the used market. I have no idea why they're not more popular for conversions... they have all storage built-in, space for a bed, and a crew to work around it. The prices are right tho, since whole fleets need to be replaced every couple of years, and no one want used ambulances. You might wanna choose one without the original ambulance paint and symbols tho xD
@@livingbig Keep the blue color on it and get rid of any ambulance markings such as the snake. Also, remove the big ass horn on the hood and remove some of the warning lights. Maybe you could add a roof scoop on top to make it more aerodynamic due to the back half being so square. I mean, the camp-ulance has the aerodynamics of a barn door. Lol
I’m guessing the ‘rona put a spanner in the works... they mentioned they were heading back to nz shortly and now they’re probably stuck in nz until borders eventually open up.
That ambulance as it is is great! The storage a fridge that's original, oh my....the storage and cabinets are built to extra ordinary standards and to finish it off the walk through from the front cab is awesome!
This is hilarious, my husband thinks I'm nuts because I too have been looking at ambulances for conversion into a camper. For the bed I've been picturing a piece of padded wood maybe that drops down and latches from the wall behind the "sofa". I look forward to seeing yours come to fruition, mine is just a dream I think.
9:11 i notice a bit of a gap between the long seat cushions and the wall. If you remove the backrest and maybe the big grey thing on top at 10:18 you could easily install a fold-down bed that could either rest on the seat cushions with a bit of additional support, or just go over the cushions without touching them. There's definitely enough horizontal floorspace for a walkway and bed.
I know you probably already have the conversion done but I just saw this video. My suggestion is that you go in so the wall cavity over the bench area that you said you wanted to keep and do a Murphy bed. They are so convenient during the time you are not sleeping you can still entertain and use the bench like you want and then at night you pull your bed down and it can be a very nice bedroom for the 2 of you.sorry I'm too late with my idea but I just found this video. Good luck in your travels and may god bless an protect you. 😊❤👍
I sometimes wish I could do the tiny house. I enjoy watching you and your wife. But you bring so much joy watching others in their country and life style I love it.
Definitely. A hammock will have to be involved somewhere, because I just love them! Would be cool to do a set-up with a hammock between the campulance and the tiny house too.
Love your content. I am working on bringing tiny monolithic domes to many people. I work in automotive. Keep about $5k set aside for repairs. Your tires will now cost 300 to 500 each and you will need to go to a dealership or big rig tire shop. Brakes and engine work are much more expensive. Similar to a class A motor coach. The engine and trans are same as a 1 ton so more than regular vehicle but not in outer space like the Caterpillar engines in the coaches. Great buy!!!! I love it. I really enjoy your content. I want you to love this vehicle. I don’t want you to loose that joy due to an unexpected repair.
GREAT bargain Bryce and it's going to make a fabulous campulance! I'm totally in love with the thought of this beautiful vehicle being converted into your very own 'tiny house on wheels'. You never cease to amaze Bryce - best of luck to you two and be safe on America's highways my friend. Take care. ;-)
I used to be an EMT, and have operated out of these Modular Style Ambulances, and the Stainless Steel Overhead Grab Bars are in place to assist you with getting into your turnout gear when enroute to an Accident Scene, they also come in handy when moving around to work on a patient during transport to the Hospital. The Bed can be made in a way that it could be folded up along the wall when not in use, and then dropped down when the 2 of you are ready to go to sleep.
@@Luckie382 Please, can you use a modern date system? ddmmyyyy. Why would anyone think putting the smallest search term in the middle of two larger ones. Become a coder and you will see how ridiculous the american date system is. Your date everywhere else in the modern world looks like you have the 11th day of the 30th month. Rant over :o)
Looks identical to the Kodiak my old volunteer dept still has in service, except ours was purple where yours is blue. And no, (to Mary Ellen's comment) not all had a sink. Ours was a full-time emergency response rig. Those hand rails came in really useful when you were going from one end of the rig to the other for supplies while in motion. FYI: The lock on the fridge was there so that only paramedic and a-level EMT's had access to medications and certain supplies that b-level EMT's were not trained or allowed to administer. (which makes no sense, because if you only had a paramedic and a b-EMT on board, and the paramedic needed the b-EMT to get a controlled med for them, then the code lock becomes useless. Our med safe used a key...)
Oh, and since it was a recurring issue on our department's Kodiak, check to see if yours has the airbag suspension in the back. It was really useful to raise/lower the height of the rig, but ours always seemed to have reliability issues. If you don't have the air ride, don't worry about it. But if you do, its probably something you wont need in a camper, and you might want to look at converting it to a traditional setup before it flakes out on you. Also, keep in mind, mileage on fire service apparatus is pretty irrelevant. Our ambulance would idle for hours on end at a fire scene or on standby at events. Its not the odometer that counts, the important figure is engine hours.
I'm retired from EMS 28 years of service, I too oftened thought about converting an ambulance into a camper although I haven't been able to yet.But man...this does bring back memories! Would love to see her in civilian life :)
That's a genious idea. Honestly. Its sturdy, rugged, capable and frankly. Who the hell messes with an ambulance. And you can get away with parking many places.
Extra secure too. But I would still add some cameras and an internet connection to them, internal as well as external. Some people make a career out of challenging break-ins. And there is always the driver who gets out to pay for gas leaving his door open and girlfriend in the back.
It's been such a pleasure to follow you and see how woderful life can be even if we are in a small space. I've been telling myself that we do not need too much to be happy and I've been trying to take this as a rule to live by. Life is so much more than possession. Thank you, Bryce for hosting such an amazing series that shows us that living is fun and we must seize it by the nature and with the ones we love. 😊🙏❤🇧🇷
put a skylight in the rear cabin. Ambulances make amazing reuse vehicles for all sorts of things. Big fleet units are always well maintained and a diesel is hardly even broken in at 75K miles :) I had one that I got for $500 and we gutted and put all wood paneling in along with a Maple hardwood floor. We built a drop down bed platform so that we could have a large bed, but one that would stow away when we wanted to move around and use the kitchenette or just hang out when the weather wasn't cooperating outside. Another nice addition would be a side awning so that you can cook and relax outdoors even in fowl conditions.
Love the shorts. As far as the Campulance goes, lift the roof. Put your switches by the side entrance, maybe on a small pony wall. Diehard fan of the tiny house movement. Keep filming guys. Darren Chipman.
That was a nice find! Ideas: gut the rear driver's side corner and make that a wet head. Replace the bench cushions with a jack knife bed. Make the desk your kitchen but have inserts that can make it a smooth top work surface so it does double duty. Hope this helps.
Love this idea! Never thought about an ambulance as a camper but it has so much potential! If you want to keep as much as possible from the Original interior I would install a bed that you can pull down from the backdoor. It would mean you cannot use it as an entrance anymore, but if the bed is down, you can still open it and when the bed is up against the door, you have the side door which you allready use as mean entrance and the entrance from front. Blankets and Pillows go in the sofa storage. Your kitchen counter idea is perfect I think and I would put a sink right where that drawer is. For cooking and heating use solar as much as possible. Get an Instant Pot, you have a enough space to store it! Good luck and lots of fun making this the camper of your dreams! ^_^
I actually feel a little guilty cause i prefer this over the tiny house on wheels😬 the camp-ulance seems way more convenient to travel with! Imagine how it’ll turn out after the remodelling?! Can’t wait
I've never been in an ambulance before so that was entertaining. You do what you want to do with it. Keep most of it the way it is but, warm it up and cozier. Give it more of a home and less medical.
So much potential! 👍 I would actually wrap the exterior if for nothing people will think your are an EMT and expect you to help them in time of crisis. However, that ambulance is strong enough to fit a vertical axis wind turbine in the rear and produce near 500w alone. This is a game changer m8!
Brilliant buy, replace the bench seat with a mattress on pull out slats, half can be the back support, half the seat. That way you'll still be able to use the seatbelts. It will take a bit more of the central space but you'll have a proper bed to sleep on, you can even make it longer on Bryce's side by adding a side flap of timber as a side table with a cushion on top for night time.
Greay score! A nice bedding option that, I think should take over the tiny house scene, is the Japanese bedroom system. Just a nice comfy tatame mat, perhaps raised a little bit. And sleep on roll-up futons. Tatame is such a nice natural material and also really nice to walk and sit on.
Wow that is great. I had no idea what you were going to say about the price. But it is really a good deal. I can understand your not wanting to get of the safety seating. I sure you will work it out. I like traveling by road more than flying. I think it is a great project. looking forward to you revamping the vehicle. Have a good trip back home.
Enjoyed your vid. Was a FF/ PMD for 30 years., just a note that most ambulances have a way to put another cot (stretcher) over the bench seat. Look for two round metal bowls and on the other end it will be a two rectangles if so they would be a good place to fold a mattress down to saving your bench seat. And giving you ansafe secure bed even while moving. Good luck. Hope to meet you when you come to sunny south florida., FTL here
I've been watching a lot of videos about converting vans for camping and saw an ambulance conversion and new it was for me. I think you made a good investment and it looks like you and your wife are enjoying the ambli! I was in medical field and a medic in the Army National Guard, so it was natural for me. BLESSINGS to you both in Jesus name! HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW TOY!
It will! I think we will probably keep much of it in tact, as the fit-out and storage compartments are really good. We will definitely be building in some new additions, but I like the idea of keeping lots of the original character.
@@livingbig I've built 2 shuttle bus campers, and used all the built in fiberglass walls and engineered flooring and built from that platform, make it like a modern yacht. I'm looking at a low mileage 95 Ford diesel 4x4 ambulance about the same size to convert. I'm going to use as much of the interior as possible since it so durable and easy to clean, just add accents to make it cool, modern and useful. The idea to use the tall compartment for a shower is excellent, I saw one ambulance camper that used the side stairwell for the shower area using a removable shower curtain and a drain in the corner of the aluminum step. Good luck on the build,it's a beautiful truck, makes me miss my 2011 Chevy shuttle camper I just sold .
It looks like it has a lot of potential. Ideas: You seem comfortable with a smaller bed, why not turn the double seater into a couch with interlocked slats that you can pull out (with it's own legs always resting on the ground) to make double the width of the current bench? Keep as much of the current furniture intact as possible (except for the seats). It's been made to be extremely sturdy and withstand the travelling, so it's unlikely you will get something as strong. Start with the seats and tabletops, because they make it look clinical. The rest is minimal, and will probably look awesome with some well-made wooden worktops. You can stick any artwork on the wall to make it look nice without having to replace wall material. See how you like it then and consider doing more. The weird outdoor closet could be an onboard shower if it .. oh I just rewatched and you already said so :)
The rails that run along the ceiling of the cabin of the ambulance are to hang equipment, Intravenous infusions, and also to hang on to. Enjoy your campulance! Great purchase.
What I see you need is a wet shower with composting toilet, in the side entrance, rear entrance, or single seat across from couch. Induction cook top, instant pot, Berkey water filter on desk. Cooler size freezer. Microwave + convention or toaster oven in a cabinet area. A built folding platform to extend the couch into a full / queen size bed. You already have lots of battery for the lights, just need at 110V inverter.
Finally!!!!! I've been a sub for a few years and I've finally got to see what Rasa looks like. Well worth the wait because she is freaking gorgeous! You 2 are a good looking couple but even better you are wonderful people. The way you treat and talk to people shows us what type of person you are, Bryce. Good luck with your new campulance. I know it broke down on you once so hopefully that will be the only time. Thank you both for the hard work of bringing these vids to us. Take care
Wonderful opportunity!!! My recommendation is..... to figure out a way to make a pop up roof, so that you don't have to hunch down... How? I have not a clue,,,, but it is a ' needs must ' for your beautiful height, Brice! I'm looking forward to seeing what you create! Love you, Love the Show!!!
You could use the metal pull-up bars to hold your mattress when it's not in use. When you need the mattress you can add a pulley system to make it descend. So cool!!!
I. CANNOT. BELIEVE. THE. PRICE!! Kind of hoping you retain the sleek interior & go with a modern or retro design, adding warmth with accessories. A thought about the bed... would it be possible to suspend a retractable one from the ceiling, maybe scissor-lift style? Just throwing it out there- I’d want to retain as much of the existing seating/storage/surfaces as possible if it were mine
I can not wait to see the changes y'all make to convert it more into a livable area! I like the idea you mentioned of keeping the legal seating, it makes sense. Good luck in the process and am anxiously waiting to see the final reveal of this project! !
We will be following this build. We have a very similar sized ambulance box on our truck we used as a mobile office and work shop. We will be rebuilding it as a camper to stay in when we travel soon.
One idea for sleeping area: get a removable platform you can store or repurpose that you can park atop the bench, stretching out into the middle of the cab. Then you can have a larger airbed while still being able to utilize the space when you're awake.
Bryce! Not trying to bug you, but I'm patiently (impatiently) waiting for your Campulance reveal. 😆😄 About how much longer until the renovation is complete??? 😊 Love your channel btw 😍
I used to have an ambulance as a tiny house back in 2012, it's the best type of vehicle in my opinion for a conversion. I may just get another one and great job on scoring yours for such a great price!
For your bed, just add a drop down table something like regular RVs have. Just a thought. You're able to keep all existing storage under the bench along with the seatbelts.
Bryce, I adore you and your channel; thanks to Rasa for her editing, filming, and smudging skills. 😉 You’re so funny...had to disconnect siren and such which is too bad bc it would’ve been “so cool.” Lol. You are by far the most compassionate, empathetic interviewer, and I can’t wait to see what you do with your campulance! Have a blast!! Happy, happy holidays. Big hugs! 🤗
How!? How did I not see this until now? O_O but the real comment is how much I love, love the Bryce and Rasa feel to everything they give us. So warm, interesting, informative, and.. I feel I could kick it by the fire with them. In other words.. they have a way of bringing you in and along so comfortably and I love that. Thanks you two. =]
Being a Paramedic and I spend a tremendous amount of time in a rescue like this, I have often thought about converting one into a camper... I can't wait to see what you do with it!
@@StrokerStevens damn, paramedics are really some special breed. I could never. I get weak and feel like fainting just from hearing about blood. I am very very strong about myself tho. I cut my finger with a butterfly knife, had a cracked TH-7 (might still have, idk) and I fell over more times than I can count. Have a fucked up labyrinth and my hobby was skating for a few years, now it's drifting. I'm a masochist I swear LOL
The fact that the “Campulance” has been so well fitted with electronics means it could offer a whole new element to your design! Do you have an inventory of the embedded existing systems? With every personal space you design, you take it to the next logical level. This Camulance is a special challenge because it is unclear as to what you should remove. Ultimately you will probably have to remove elements that you don’t really want to remove. I’d start by pretending the space is empty and design an ultimate solution. Then after it is on paper, try to reincorporate the existing elements into your design by “switching things around.” I’m so intrigued with your perspectives on both design and life, and with the whole approach that you take in filming your show. Well done. Thank you, especially, for your inspiration!
Nice! For your safety don't hang on or work out on the top rails lol. They are there for you to grab onto and walk around when the ambulance is moving. The captains chair is the safest seat in the back while the vehicle is moving, for your information.
Patrick Ozment it is called a captains chair. Chairs that sit on their own with armrests or individual adjustability that are not connected to a bench seat are called captains chairs. It doesn’t literally mean a chair for a captain. Any chair that’s not connected to a bench in a vehicle is called a captains chair.
Patrick shut up. A Captians chair is the style its made of .boat captain chairs look the same.the drivers seat is same as captain chair .hence the name or model captain chair ..Captian chair is one that stands alone with arm rests so your not thrown out of it on turns. ?never heard them called that before ?get out more then go on a boat or ship ..have you heard of navigational chair .its a Captians chair for mapping out course or directions on or in a cabin of boat or in this case Camoulace .its a editing (Captians)chair now lol! ..Keep it blue don't paint that's the catacture of it .make a shower out of closet.can you make a Murphy bed some how on passenger side? Or split Murphy bed half on one side &half on other, draw bridge bed lol. Can't wait to see it on new year .hum if you sell it or want to donate to a disabled me and my teen son to see country.
Patrick Ozment I could mention anything and you would be like.. “OMG I DID THIS FOR 10 YEARS AND IM AN EXPERT” I could mention about like elephant poop and you’ll be like “IM AN EXPERT REEEEEEEE”
What's amazing about Ambulance conversions, is the electric is already run and they are built like a tank to a very high spec both engine and body and are maintained appropriately. A little peel and stick on the walls can change the entire feel but honestly you don't need to do that much to one to use it as is! And they are cheap!~
NONE....... ZERO.... EEVVEERRY person transported in an "ambo" is kept alive. Mandatory action across USA. Heart is kept beating whole time no matter what. Ceasing keeping the body alive is only allowed in the Hospital by doctor's order. That's the rules... If someone is already dead they ARE NOT transported in an Ambo. Coroner has their own vehicle for that.... thus ambulances remain available for another life saving call and not tied up transporting the deceased.
coachgeo your stupid as shit, people die in ambulances all the time, often times patients are pronounced dead. Just because they are receiving cpr doesn’t mean that they are alive. Just because ambulances don’t go around picking up the deceased doesn’t mean that people don’t die in a vehicle that is meant for transporting and caring for people with serious injuries.
coachgeo Where are you getting your information? I’ve worked at my fire department for several years now and have seen many people die in transit, “ceasing to resuscitate” isn’t only allowed at a hospital, There are a tremendous amount of different scenarios that a patient can go through and unfortunately sometimes they’re complications mean they don’t make it to a hospital and you can’t just decide that they have to live until arrival. Don’t put information out there that comes out of your ass, thank you.
I own a 1991 Ford E350 MedTech Ambo. I have people give me "that look" when the conversation turns to how many souls have passed on in my rig. I say plenty I'm sure, but how many lives were also saved? How many babies first cries were heard in there? I look at the positive side of things and have never felt the slightest bit of evil while in my rig. BTW, this is my daily driver and it gets 18 mpg... Pretty good for something that weighs almost 10k pounds empty.
For The shower, in the first compartment, use a revolving door. You turn it, you have the toilets, you turn it again, the shower... 🤗😎this way, during winter you can use it from the inside. Show us the result. 😊😌☺️
Yes, Raise the roof on hinges like we saw on one of the tiny houses so you won’t get stoop shouldered over time! I can’t wait to see the ‘after’ of your conversion!

That with some silver accents would be super badass.

Today is 08/15/2019... Would love to see the finished campulance! Because she is seriously " badas*" love it! 👍👍👍
Yeah! It's almost a year, what's going on with the campulance?!
It’s April 23rd 2020... still nothing
tillallareoneluv yeah same lol 😭
Today is Aug 11th 2020...still nothing

Maybe use a hammock for a second sleeper over the twin mattress? That would allow extra sleeping without losing any of the seat storage
Definitely. A hammock will have to be involved somewhere, because I just love them! Would be cool to do a set-up with a hammock between the campulance and the tiny house too.
@@livingbig It's a pity that there isn't more height to play with, it would give some more options. Lift the roof!!!
Take care. ;-)
Thanks so much Charles! We are so excited for this project and can't wait to get stuck into it, and our future travels! Take care! :)
@@livingbig Bryce cant wait for the changes in the future..
Adorable and is better than sleeping in a tent. I love the natural building of the ambulance.
Have you thought of a Murphy style bed system, that way you can retrain floor space?
Campulance, lmao I'm dying at how casual you talk about it.

Living Big In A Tiny House
11/30/19, update on conversion or did i miss it?
Driving is the absolute best way to see America! So many places to go and so many things to see!
Some great ideas there, and it sounds like you've done a fantastic conversion yourself! What a cool project. It's hard to beat a maple hardwood floor!
Can’t wait
Well hey once it's converted it will still be a tiny home, right?
Just toss the other and live in this lol
LOVE IT!! I'd do almost the opposite of your plans, I love the "clinical" look😂. I'd just make that bench seat into a bed! GREAT FIND!!
That is the cleanness retired truck I have ever seen. Def nice rig
I've never been in an ambulance before so that was entertaining. You do what you want to do with it. Keep most of it the way it is but, warm it up and cozier. Give it more of a home and less medical.
My favorite RUclipsr and channel. Thank you for such wonderful and genuine content.
So much potential! 👍
I would actually wrap the exterior if for nothing people will think your are an EMT and expect you to help them in time of crisis.
However, that ambulance is strong enough to fit a vertical axis wind turbine in the rear and produce near 500w alone. This is a game changer m8!
You've got a great channel. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for making an excellent show.
I love you idea of that outside back closet space. Making it a shower! Excellent idea!
That's a nice idea, and I do really like Japanese design.
I was thinking the same. Japanese beds are very comfy and easy to store.
Oh yeah. I actually don't like flying very much - and driving you get to see all the amazing stuff in between places.
this might just be the first time I ever get a tour inside a campulance! .....wicked!! ;)
The rebuild on this would be a blast though almost sad to dismantle all of that engineered goodness.
Ideas:
You seem comfortable with a smaller bed, why not turn the double seater into a couch with interlocked slats that you can pull out (with it's own legs always resting on the ground) to make double the width of the current bench?
Keep as much of the current furniture intact as possible (except for the seats). It's been made to be extremely sturdy and withstand the travelling, so it's unlikely you will get something as strong. Start with the seats and tabletops, because they make it look clinical. The rest is minimal, and will probably look awesome with some well-made wooden worktops. You can stick any artwork on the wall to make it look nice without having to replace wall material. See how you like it then and consider doing more.
The weird outdoor closet could be an onboard shower if it .. oh I just rewatched and you already said so :)
Hey Eva! Thanks for the ideas. There sure is so much potential in this vehicle.
Love you guys! Can’t see how this turns out.....also love seeing Rasa on screen as well, she’s very talented at editing ❤️
Take care
I was thinking the exat same. 😂
She's been in a couple of videos now 😊
30 June 2019, I hope to see what you did with this campbulance by the end of the year. I'll be on the lookout for the video.
I'm 6'2" and dont hunch in the boxes we have at work..
You could use the metal pull-up bars to hold your mattress when it's not in use. When you need the mattress you can add a pulley system to make it descend. So cool!!!
Just a thought for the bed, some form of suspended bed using those ceiling rails. Assuming they can support the weight.
I. CANNOT. BELIEVE. THE. PRICE!!
Kind of hoping you retain the sleek interior & go with a modern or retro design, adding warmth with accessories. A thought about the bed... would it be possible to suspend a retractable one from the ceiling, maybe scissor-lift style? Just throwing it out there- I’d want to retain as much of the existing seating/storage/surfaces as possible if it were mine
you could use the bars on the ceiling for a hammock.
or sex swing
WOW only 15K!!!! you are going to have a absolute GEM when this is all done my friends!!
We totally lucked out on this one, that's for sure! :)
I never skip the ads on your videos, Bryce! Love you, take care, bye! 🍄
Thanks John! You're awesome. :)

So shiny! First time I detected the glimmer of an American accent creeping in Bryce.
Hahaha. It's okay, I'm back in New Zealand recharging my kiwi accent at the moment.

As an EMT I am very happy to see an ambulance being used to make someone a home. I am going to check back and see what you do with it.
Then after it is on paper, try to reincorporate the existing elements into your design by “switching things around.”
I’m so intrigued with your perspectives on both design and life, and with the whole approach that you take in filming your show.
@@patoz7205 I've heard people refer to it as the airway seat but mostly the captain's chair.

What's amazing about Ambulance conversions, is the electric is already run and they are built like a tank to a very high spec both engine and body and are maintained appropriately. A little peel and stick on the walls can change the entire feel but honestly you don't need to do that much to one to use it as is! And they are cheap!~
To keep the legal seating; use a murphy bed system on the bulkhead. I love the truck!
'She would definitely kill us both' 😂😂
If you believe in haunted houses, an ambulance would be a nightmare.😂
I wonder how many people died in there?😂
Just delete that one, Bryce.
NONE.......
