Green Health vs. A Root Cause Approach

  • A true functional medicine approach means that you always strive to get to the root cause of why someone presents the way they do.
When first meeting with new clients, we do a review of all the things they have tried in the past. When we review lab work, there is a pattern that looks like this, 'oh look, your b12 is low - so you need to go on b12'.
But there is a big problem with this because this approach doesn't ask why does this person have low b12! It just assumes that low b12 is the problem. However, this is a mistake.
A root cause approach would ask why this is happening for this individual. Could it be their diet? What if they are taking b12 and still low? Then what?
So, instead of giving something to bring up the b12 levels, we want to correct the dysfunction that is leading to the problem. To absorb b12, you need to make enough intrinsic factor in the gut. If you don't, you won't be able to absorb the b12 and will present as having low levels.
Two reasons for low intrinsic factor can be chronic gut inflammation and an infection with a bacteria called h.pylori.
Now, when you address these possible root causes, the individual will start to reverse that low b12. This strategy can be life changing because it can affect many other systems because poor gut health is tied to many chronic illnesses.
Or... you can take another b12 and see how that goes.
There is a smart way to get healthy, I'm here to provide that for you!
